Poor support by Trip Peru travel agent

Daniella Lizana was our travel agent for Trip Peru for our 5 star 3 night excursion to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. All the hotel and local arrangements and the Condor Travel local guides were excellent. Unfortunately she scheduled us to fly Air Peru for in country flights between Lima and Cusco. This airline has a reputation for delays and cancellations. When our flight from Cusco to Lima was cancelled 20 minutes before boarding we contacted Daniella for help. We had to get back to Lima in time to catch our cruise ship. Basically Daniella was no help and finally told us we were on our own. Fortunately the Condor Travel person in the airport stayed with us for 4 hours until he successfully got us on a different airline flight that allowed us to barely make the ship. We even had to buy new airline tickets and were not reimbursed for the Air Peru tickets we couldn't use. I would not recommend Daniella Lizana as your travel agent in Peru.

We were delighted with the thoroughness and excellent attention to detail that we received from Trip-Peru on our recent visit to Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu. Everything went very smoothly, all our connections went perfectly and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Thank you Lady Sanchez. Brian Beeston - San Diego

Peru 10 days trip

I booked my trip with Lady and she did a great job booking everything. The only minor problem was in Cuzco where the hotel they booked didn't have a queen size bed but rather had to put 2 twin beds together for our 2 days stay. Everything else was smooth including the doctor's trip which was totally unexpected. I would also recommend to check for condor mating season if you want to go Colca Valley and you are interested in seeing Condors. I wish I knew that they were in mating season so I would've booked something else.

Very accommodating with excellent options and quick service

I was very happy to work with Trip Peru in arranging our trip. The options were very wide, and as we went through 10 (!) iterations, our vacation became tailored specifically to us. The prices were at least competitive with other tour guides we investigated, but the response time was much faster. We have not yet experienced the actual vacation, but are greatly looking forward to enjoying our trip.

A truly wonderful experience with Trip Peru.

This trip exceeded our expectations in every respect. Trip Peru coordinated every aspect of the custum-designed trip we had planned perfectly. Local guides and drivers met us at every location upon our arrival. They were knowledgeable, pleasant and efficient in every respect. We not only enjoyed everything we saw, the Peruvian guides enhanced our experience with their extensive knowledge of each location. The vans that we traveled in were modern and comfortable, and the hotels were very nice (especially the San Agustin in Urubamba). And, of course, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley were spectacular! We highly recommend Trip Peru for anyone planning a trip to Peru.

An Increadiable Trip and will book with Trip-Peru Again

I did not have to worry about a thing Trip-Peru booked my international flight from Miami and all domestic flights in Peru. The tour guides where very knowledgeable and courteous. The transportion to sites where all on time. I highly recommend Trip-Peru and would use them again on my next trip to Peru.

I was screwed out of $900.00 by this company. I informed that I was traveling standby and was assured that if I had changes it would be okay. When I couldn't get a flight I was told that all my money was used to hold hotel reservations and other expenses.

Highly recommended.....

Everyone we incountered was friendly and helpful ... I am definitely planning another trip with this agency..

Trip-Peru Travel Agency - an excellent choice

Last summer, I was searching for info about a travel company called Trip-Peru. They were recommended by another travel agency who does not operate in South America. I found very little information about the company but after obtaining trip cost quotes from several companies, our group of 8 decided to book with Trip-Peru. We have just returned from a two week trip to Ecuador and Peru and Trip-Peru did a great job taking care of us and all of the details. More specifically, our travel specialist at Trip-Peru was Claudia Gil Arroyo and she did an excellent job of making sure everything was perfect. We had a great trip and I highly recommend Trip-Peru. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them. Here are a few examples of the excellent service we received: 1- We were scheduled for the June 16th Celebrity Xpedition sailing in the Galapagos and the cruise was canceled on Monday, June 10th. Since we had worked with Trip-Peru to book a second week in Cusco and Machu Picchu to follow our Galapagos cruise, I called Claudia on Tuesday morning and explained the situation. We still really wanted to visit the Galapagos but knew that it was terribly short notice to find 4 rooms or a cruise in the Galapagos by 5:00pm that day. After 6:00pm, if necessary, no adjustments could be made to our flights without significant costs. In a couple of hours, Claudia called back to confirm that she had found 4 rooms at the Finch Bay Hotel in Santa Cruz, hotel rooms in Quito, Ecuador for the pre and post Galapagos portion of the trip, and round trip flights from Quito to Santa Cruz. We were left with plenty of time to make changes to our flight from Atlanta to Quito. 2- Our group flew from Quito to Lima and on to Cusco where we stayed two nights before traveling to Machu Picchu. When we arrived in Machu-Picchu, one of the guys in our group realized that he had left his wallet in the hotel safe in Cusco. He called Claudia who promptly contacted the hotel and confirmed that the wallet was there and would be held at the office until we returned to Cusco to spend one more night before flying to Lima. 3- Our tour guides in Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Lima were excellent. 4- In every city we visited, Claudia had arranged for us to be met by representatives who escorted us to and from the airports and hotels. They took care of all of the details of checking us into hotels and flights. In summary, Claudia and Trip-Peru were great to work with and I highly recommend them. They were absolutely wonderful!

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in the Andes of Peru

You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

Peru - Top Destinations to Visit

  • Summit Machu Picchu : The pièce de resistance of Peru has to be the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the 15th-century archaeological site is a sight to behold and should not be missed. One of the most popular ways to get there is a multi-day trek along the Inca Trail from the city of Cusco. Another exciting way to head to the citadel is on a two-hour train ride from the Sacred Valley town of Ollantaytambo. The best time to visit the magical city is in April and May when the rainy season has passed, and the surrounding mountains are vivid.
  • Discover the Sacred Valley :  Once the beating heart of the Incan Empire, the Sacred Valley is still a magical place to explore. The valley is home to quaint villages, and ancient archaeological sites, and is, of course, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Visit the bohemian town of Pisac to see its beautiful hilltop citadel and shop in one of the best handicraft markets in the region. Discover the secrets of the Ollantaytambo Inca fortress in the town of the same name and enjoy some outdoor adventures like trekking, rock climbing, and mountain biking in Urubamba. Head to the pristine glacial-fed Humantay Lake for a lake-side hike or trek up the slopes of Rainbow Mountain. This high-altitude hike is very popular, but it can be cold and windy, so be prepared and know your limits. Another lovely off-the-beaten-track hike is to the three lakes of Kinsa Cocha and you can do this alone or with a guide. There are also plenty of different hiking trails in and around Machu Picchu, from long, multi-day treks to short two-day hikes to the magnificent citadel.
  • Explore the ancient Inca Trail:  Follow in the footsteps of an ancient civilization as you make your way along the Inca Trail to the 15th-century citadel of Machu Picchu. Hailed as one of the greatest multi-day treks in the world, this is an experience of a lifetime that you should not miss. Constructed over 500 years ago by the Incas, the full trail winds its way from Chile to Peru for 40,000 kilometers, passing through forested valleys, historic Inca ruins, and ancient archaeological sites. Begin your trek in the old capital of Cusco and make your way through the Sacred Valley to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Finally, head up to the Sun Gate overlooking the magnificent Machu Picchu. The best time to hike the Inca Trail and visit Machu Picchu is between July and August in the dry season.
  • Travel to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon:  Exotic, wild, and mysterious, the Amazon jungle has lured intrepid travelers into its untamed world for centuries. Take a short trip into the jungle from Puerto Maldonado and cruise down the Amazon in a canoe, searching for rare giant otters and caimans. If you are not sure whether you should be looking for a budget tour, a luxury tour, or perhaps a completely customized tour, check all our Peru tours at the top of this page. Peru is an amazing country to visit, and there may be other key factors that you wish to consider before traveling. So please check our “ Peru travel guide ” that offers a lot of relevant information about traveling to the country.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

Each year before Lent, cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Learn more about festivals in Peru.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Feast of St Peter and St Paul

National Independence Days

Feast of Santa Rosa de Lima

Battle of Angamos Day

All Saints Day

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Please note that the dates of  Peru's public holidays  may vary.

Highlights of Peru

However you get to Machu Picchu – whether it’s through spectacular scenery on the classic Inca Trail, through small Andes villages on the Inca Quarry Trail, or over mega mountain passes on the Choquequirao Trail – the feeling of reaching this otherworldly archaeological site will stay with you for a lifetime. This ancient 15th-century citadel is a spectacular reminder of the ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

Climb to the viewing platform, or perhaps take a flight over the lines for an epic view.

Treasured for its climate and fertile land, Sacred Valley has long been the main food source in the high Andes. Is tipping customary in Peru?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service was good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Peru?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good idea for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Expect to pay cash when dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when traveling away from the larger cities.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Peru?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:

1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

Camping along the Inca Trail is one of the world's most sought-after travel experiences. Bond with new friends over delicious local food and rest up before another day of trekking.

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are much more fun.

Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.

Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.

Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is, in fact, the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves, and generally, Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Traveling alone is one of those things many do when given the chance. The only downside experienced at times is the feeling of loneliness during their travel. Luckily, one one of our mottos is that no one ever travels alone.

We welcome many solo travelers since the safety that we provide is second to none. We offer GPS tracking of buses, direct hostel/hotel pickup, and onboard English-speaking guides to help answer any questions or concerns that you might have.

Our buses are also a great place to meet other like-minded travelers. On numerous occasions, people have met long-life friends, and sometimes even partners! And not to mention that YOU decide where to go, how long to stay and what to do at each destination.

Here are a few reviews left behind by solo travelers:

I had so much fun with Ricardo, Nicole, and Debora. They really know how to make travelers feel heard, important, and a part of the group. From the first stop they knew my name. They did an amazing job with our group and really took the time to individualize the experience for each traveler.

The busses for Peru Hop were luxurious with comfortable and spacious seating and great AC.

5 stars to Peru Hop because Ricardo, Nicole, and Debora are awesome!

"Great Way to Travel Peru"

My partner and I only had two weeks to travel in Peru, but Peru Hop made it possible and our experience exceptional.

256leong Pennsylvania

My partner and I only had two weeks to travel in Peru, but Peru Hop made it possible and our experience exceptional. The buses were organized, on time, efficient, and safe, and the trip guides never let us down.

We had the pleasure of having guides Gabi (Gabriel) and Sandra, both who were very informative, positive, full of good humor, and seemingly truly focused on making Peruhop and one's travels full of great and worthwhile experiences. I enjoyed picking their brains, eating with them, joking with them, and developing a rapport throughout our journey. Muchas gracias, to the both of you.

The little excursions are very interesting, mostly falling into the interesting category for many reasons. Though the Nazca lines were hard to see, the ambience of the place (the wind, ethereal lighting, and brilliant clouds) made this place magical. The desert park excursions near Paracas were surprisingly and refreshingly barren (meant in a good way). The poor man's Galapagos were full of cool animals with a refreshing and relaxing boat ride manned by EXTREMELY skilled boaters. Some of the restaurant stops were subpar or expensive... But this is to be expected and it is hard to get around it. Despite their lackluster taste or price, they are usually in cool areas and the stops make for great excuses to stretch one's legs and go to the bathroom.

Overall Peru Hop suited our needs and was enjoyable, allowing us to explore many areas of Peru we wouldn't have been able to if we arranged the trip ourselves. It was pretty cost effective and the guides were great and organized. We highly recommend Peru Hop.

kaleidescapings Southafrica

We were 3 couples travelling from Lima to Cusco. It was our first time in Peru and Peru Hop was a lovely way to see a lot of the country in a short time.

They were well organised and on time, and we saw a lot more than we would have if we had booked each trip on our own. We discovered little towns like Paracas and Huacachina, and big cities as well. They facilitated the extra tours well, and the pick up and drop off procedures were seemless! Being a third world country, we felt very safe travelling with Peruhop and didn't worry about our luggage getting stolen or about crashing into mountain passes.

We left Lima with FERNANDO AND CARTA, and honestly they were a big part of why we enjoyed the trip so much! They were full of energy and information, and they went above and beyond the call of duty. In Paracas, Fernando came with us to explain our dietary requirements at a restaurant to make sure there were no misunderstandings with the language barrier. They gave us recommendations for things to do and eat at every stop and we loved our time with them. Carta gave us a balm to use when we were suffering with altitude sickness and waited with us in Cusco until a taxi came to take us to our hotel. He wouldn't leave until every passenger had transport to the accommodation! Their attention to detail and genuine passion made our trip so much better than we expected.

Overall we had a great time and would definitely do it again!

My girlfriend and I took Peruhop’s “Get to Cusco Quick” route from Lima. Lisa Marie took us from our Lima hostel and did a great job of explaining our itinerary and making us feel comfortable on the bus.

In Paracas, Johnny and Richardo were wonderful and showed us around the nature reserve. In Huacachina, we switched over to Johnny and Richardo’s bus until Nazca. Both of them were great travel companions and guides. Richardo told us all about the Nazca lines before we arrived.

In Nazca, we learned there was an adjustment made which required a small group of us (6 passengers) to board a non-Peruhop night bus to Cusco. Johnny hung out with us and made sure we got on the bus okay — he was great! It worked out well: we arrived in Cusco 7 hours earlier than our original itinerary.

Would highly recommend. We made friends on the way and we’re able to have a no stress travel experience across Peru!

Peruhop made my trip from Lima to Cusco so enjoyable and I loved every minute of it! I have to give a very special mention to Jorge and Luis, and also Christian. The guides were always so very helpful, friendly and so much fun. The highlight was partying together in Huacachina!

The busses were comfortable and blankets were provided. The free tours were awesome. Sometimes I had forgot to arrange additional tours and the guides helped me with ease on the bus.

Me and my friends had an amazing time from Arequipa to Lima with Peru Hop. Peru Hop replies quickly to your emails when you would like to change any dates around last minute and work with your schedule pretty well. Our tour guide was Charly and he we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. He was super knowledgeable, friendly and funny, making everyone on the bus laugh. He became good friends with me and my friends! If you wanna have a seamless and thorough trip of Peru, book Peru Hop and see if you can’t get on Charly’s bus! Salud!

We decided to book with them as they offer transport to Cusco via Arequipa, which is supposed to be the safest route. We also liked that they make a quick stop in Nazca, you just have to get out of the bus to the viewing tower and can hop back on. In this way you can see the Nazca lines without having to spend an overnight. We really liked our guide Gorge, he was super enthusiastic and always answered all our questions.

We especially appreciated Peru Hop and the way they communicate and how honest they are when we booked tours with other companies in Cusco. Other tour companies keep dropping you off at places for shopping and that is how they keep the costs low. We never encountered a guide as enthusiastic and accommodating as Jorge. We found the other travelers with Peru Hop very nice, they had all sorts of ages and most of them are real travel enthusiasts.

Solo Female Travelers

trip peru reviews

Solo female travelers are highly frequent on Peru Hop! Going back to the first point, they meet many people on the bus, traveling just like them or doing the same things as them. We provide a safe and fun way to get around Peru, and always there to help and provide tips on safety, where to go and more! Here are some reviews written by some our previous female solo travellers:

I had an absolutely amazing experience traveling from Lima to Cusco with stops along the way in Paracas, Huacachina, Arequipa and Puno. The trip is very organized. When I first purchased it, I didn’t expect it to be Put together that well. I didn’t book any of the hotels/hostels before my trip and the guides helped me to do it on the bus. My guides were Ricardo and Nicole. They are the ones that made this trip to be the one of my lifetime. They quickly became my friends and made me feel completely comfortable. If you get a chance to choose guides, make sure you are riding with these two (they always work together as a pair) and make sure to say hi from me! Would definitely repeat this trip in a heartbeat. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to see Peru on the cheap and with comfort!.

As a solo female traveller I really liked the safety point, being dropped off and picked up from all my hostels...

Fantastic trip with Peru Hop. I took the „full South Route“ Lima-Paracas-Huacachina-Nasca-Areqiupa-Cusco.

Guids: All guides speak (proper) english, are friendly, funny, helpful and knowledgeable. They support you with information about whatever you want to know or need and will give you an answer to every question. They are always pleased to help you to book or choose an extra tour for you. Very friendly and honest people. All my guids were local, what is really amazing because you can literally feel how much they love their country and their jobs. I had different guides for different destinations: Yoced, Aron and in the end I was lucky to meet Elvio, who has given me the best recommendation about trips around. But any way i need to say "thank you" to Aron! He has taken care of me as I almost lost consciousness due to altitude sickness. All guids were cool and special. I enjoyed my trip with organized guids and also the easy communication with the office (first I upgraded my ticket to Bolivia Hop but due to the political situation in Bolivia I had to cancel it again. It was no problem to upgrade my ticket and got my money back when I had canceled.)

Busses: The busses was comfortable and clean. In general the drivers were nice and professional.

I enjoyed this trip, met amazing people and had a great time.

Family Travel

trip peru reviews

Organizing a trip is never easy, especially when its for more than one person, including young kids. Having to plan food, clothing, transport around cities, tours and more is stressful and can take some of the fun away from the trip. Luckily, we've got you covered and are glad to help! You can get around Peru and see all the best destinations with just one ticket when you travel with Peru Hop.

One of the things that families love most about our service is our strong emphasis on safety, with features like GPS bus tracking and direct hotel pick-up. Every bus also has an onboard English-speaking guide who is there to assist with any questions that you might have, as well as to provide recommendations for restaurants, hotels, and activities in each destination.

Here are some reviews from families about their time on Peru Hop:

My sister and I took Peru hop with our parents to Cusco from Lima. It was convenient and easy, however pretty crowded at some places. It was perfect to do with the family group but would have been out of our budget for backpacking. Overall a good experience.

My sister and I are usually travelers who would do our own thing.. organize own transport and accommodation etc. But after reading about Peru Hop we thought for the Peru bit of our travels let's take it easy a bit. We were so happy we booked the Peru Hop service as it took away all the simple hassles of going back and forth to bus terminals and getting to hostels. I would sum them up as total convenience in that sense. They were on time or close to time with their services. The times of the buses linked very well with tours people were doing. They were very organized in our eyes. We had a total of 3 different guides along the 9 days we travelled with them and each guide was very helpful and professional. Keep up the great work guys!

We did the full down South tour. It is touristy in places like Hucachina and Lake Titikaka but still nice to see. Other than that we spent the number of days we wanted in towns and did our own thing. For those who decide to stay extra days in Arequipa and you don't have many days to see the Colca Canyon I would recommend the Lake Salinas tour. Peru Hop advertises the Colca Canyon in their info book but we thought it was too rushed to do over a day or 2 so we opted for the Lake Salinas day tour with hot springs (which are more secluded than the Colca Hot Springs...less touched). It was beautiful! We thoroughly enjoyed that day out especially as we weren't going to Bolivia to see their salt lake. We booked it through an agency in Arequipa...just shop around and make sure hot spring is included. Overall I think Peru Hop is a GREAT service offered in Peru for those who want to take it a bit easy with getting around and not having to worry about the language barrier.

Older Travelers

Editor’s Take

What to Look for in Peru Tour Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary. Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

The reviews for tours in Peru are overwhelmingly positive. Most reviews are blown away by the professionalism of the tour guides, and the quality of the tours offered.

The hospitality of the tour guides in Peru is unparalleled. They are all driven with passion and genuine care for travelers, and have an infinitesimal amount of knowledge of Peru’s landscape, history, and culture. This hospitality extends to the entire tour staff, as the porters are also known for their cheer and humility.

Tours in Peru also tend to be smaller , allowing you stronger connections with the locals and the guides. Another perk of smaller tours means that you receive individualized attention as a traveler.

Some reviewers underestimated the activity leve l of their tour. Because of the altitude of some trails, travelers may find it challenging. There are several tours available, of varying levels of difficulty. Make sure you shop around to see which itineraries realistically fit your capabilities. Some tour companies also provide a training plan to ensure that you are ready for your trip.

If the activity level and high-altitudes of Peru concerns you, fear not! Tours prioritize your safety   and comfort above all else, and will usually give you sufficient time to properly climatize to the  high altitudes. We also have a guide to adjust to altitude-sickness, check it out here!

How to Plan an Epic Peru Family Vacation

W hether you want to cross exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu off your family’s travel bucket list, or you long to explore the magnificent geological features of Rainbow Mountain near Cusco, Peru represents the perfect spot for a multi-generational family vacation . We’ve been wanting to visit Peru for awhile and have always appreciated Our Whole Village ‘s philosophy and itineraries.

Our Whole Village (OWV) is a family-focused travel agency that designs meaningful and culturally immersive trips for families who want to create lasting memories, travel more consciously, and give back. I asked OWV to put together this Peru guide, including their favorite activities and accommodations.

Peru Family Vacation Guide

Why take a family vacation to peru.

Peru contains stunning natural beauty, from high-elevation lakes to remote deserts and prime Amazon rainforest. Its rich and varied history means there are archaeological treasures from civilizations as diverse as the Norte Chico, Wari, Nazca, and Inca scattered across the land.

From the colonial charm of Cusco to the ancient splendor of Sacsayhuaman, the iconic llamas and alpacas of the Sacred Valley to the lush rainforests of Puerto Maldonado, there’s something for every age and interest in Peru. What’s more, the “Land of the Incas” boasts some of the best food in the world, founded on agricultural practices left unchanged for more than 2,000 years.

Where Is Peru?

South America is moderately easy to reach from the United States. While Peru has 234 airports, only 24 of those receive regularly scheduled flights from Peru’s leading domestic airlines. Most travelers fly directly into Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) before catching connecting flights to final destinations such as Cusco (CUZ) or Puerto Maldonado (PEM) (for a visit to the Amazon Basin).

What to Know Before You Travel to Peru

Peru currency.

The  official currency of Peru  is the  nuevo sol  (S/) or Peruvian  sol . Since the nation still operates primarily on cash, keep plenty of paper money and coins on hand. Don’t expect to find ATMs or currency exchanges in small villages and towns.

While US dollars may also be accepted, expect change given in the local currency. So, you’ll have to do a little math to make sure you receive the correct change.

Peru safety

In certain parts of Peru, such as the Columbian and Peruvian border area in the Loreto region, criminal activity is more common. The American government also recommends avoiding the area in central Peru known as the Valley of the Rivers Apurimac, Mantaro, and Ene.

Remain aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant as you would with any location that you’re visiting while at home or abroad. Use common sense and don’t venture out after dark. For more information on safety during your vacation, check out the  latest update s .

Vaccinations for Peru

The CDC does recommend travelers to Peru take certain precautions. Hepatitis A is an important one, as well as Typhoid, and Tetanus. Check out these travel vaccines for Peru recommended by Passport Health (which is a great place to go for your shots) to see what you might need to have before a visit.

Transportation in Peru

There is a vast diversity when it comes to forms of transportation in Peru , from antiquated trucks to modern air fleets. As you travel through the countryside, you will need to strike a balance between comfort, practicality, cost, and safety. Better yet, work with a travel company that can organize transportation needs in advance, relying on the most comfortable and modern standards.

Peru Challenges and Concerns

When traveling to Peru, prepare for soaring heights and panoramic vistas. Of course, these views come with the potential for altitude sickness (or  soroche ). Prevention through acclimatization to higher elevation remains the best line of defense.

Recognizing the telltale signs of altitude sickness is important. They include loss of appetite or nausea, headaches, lethargy, and poor sleep. To avoid altitude sickness, make rest a priority, avoid alcohol, and eat in moderation.

Healthcare in Peru

The public healthcare system provides all Peruvians with access to medical care regardless of their income. The private health sector is mainly centered in the capital city of Lima.

Private clinics provide a much higher standard of care than public health facilities, and they have up-to-date medical equipment, supplies, diagnostic equipment, medicine, and well-trained nurses and physicians. Tourists to Peru should purchase an international health insurance policy before arrival to cover any expenses that arise while abroad.

When is the Best Time to Visit Peru?

As with any vacation, you’ll need to choose the right time for you, but here is what you can expect when traveling to Peru.  Dry Season:  May to October.  Rainy Season:  November through April.  High Season:  July and August, mid-December to mid-January.

Optimal Travel Times:  April to June or September to November. It’s a good choice to travel during these times so that you can enjoy lighter crowds, warmer temperatures, and fewer rainy days.

What to Pack for Peru?

When in Peru, prepare to dress for a variety of microclimates found at various elevations. The nation contains 28 of the 32 world climates. What does this mean for multigenerational travelers? Remember to pack for temperature fluctuations. In other words, layering will be your friend.

Choose wrinkle-free materials that pack easily and can be washed on the go and air-dried. Don’t forget a compact raincoat for the occasional drizzle and a light down jacket for evenings when temperatures can drop drastically.

You’ll also want to invest in comfortable walking shoes that can handle brief treks through the mountains or jungle. Plus, make sure to leave some extra room to bring back  souvenirs from Peru .

Things to do in Peru with kids

Paddleboard or kayak on piuray lagoon.

Enjoy a 15-minute yoga session before heading out onto Piuray Lagoon for a paddleboarding or kayaking lesson . The calm, mirror-like waters of the lake are perfect for practicing new skills while enjoying breathtaking vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Enjoy an Immersive Visit to the Huilloc Community

Experience the vibrant indigenous culture of the Sacred Valley of the Incas (or Urubamba Valley) while being symbolically integrated into the Huilloc community. You’ll get dressed in typical clothes and use traditional tools to participate in the lifeways of the Andean people.

Explore the Peruvian Amazon

From the Tambopata National Reserve to Manú National Park, enjoy spectacular views and many family-friendly activities. These include river cruises, accessible jungle hikes, visits to indigenous villages, and plenty of wildlife observation. A Peruvian Amazon tour is a great way to break up your trip.

Take the Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu

Savor the dramatic scenery of the Andes on a scenic train journey to the station at Agua Calientes. There, board a coach for a 25-minute ride to Machu Picchu , the fabled “Lost City of the Incas” built circa 1450 by the Inca emperor Pachacuti.

What to Eat in Peru?

Peruvian food is enjoying a moment and with good reason. This cuisine reflects the diverse history, culture, and local resources of the nation while offering plenty of mouthwatering recipes. What should you order while in Peru? Some of our favorite dishes include:

  • Aji de Gallina : A chicken dish crafted using Peru’s famous bright yellow Aji Amarillo peppers. The slight spiciness of the meal keeps it from descending into boredom without proving “too hot” for kids.
  • Salchipapas : This mixture of papas (potatoes) and salchidas (sausage) will put a smile on any kid’s (or adult’s) face.  It also represents a hearty treat that’ll stick with you throughout the day.
  • Papas a la Huanca í na : This glorious mixture of  huancaína , a creamy cheese sauce, over boiled Peruvian potatoes and hard-boiled eggs tastes both rich and satisfying.
  • Mazamorra Morada : This popular dessert is made from purple corn and fruit and will please just about any sweet-loving palate.

From  Aji de Gallina to Salchipapas , there’s no end to yummy Peruvian food for kids. What’s more, the Peruvian reliance on local vegetables and fruits translates into nutritious dishes sure to satisfy without causing a sugar rush.

Accommodations in Peru

Multigenerational travels to Peru provide ample opportunity for three generations (or more) of your family to come together for unforgettable memory-making. It’s important to find accommodations that fit the needs of your family.

Where to Stay in Peru with a Family

Here are a few more upscale options for the most luxurious traveler:

  • Belmond Miraflores (Lima)
  • Tambo del Inka (Sacred Valley)
  • Titilaka (Lake Titicaca)
  • Inkaterra (Machu Picchu)
  • Belmond Monasterio (Cusco)

Peru Itinerary ideas

A family vacation to Peru should be a minimum of 10 or 11 days long to allow for travel both ways. A flight from New York to Lima takes approximately eight hours. Peru family travel will also require time to acclimate to the high altitude of places within the Sacred Valley, including Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Peru itinerary: Lima to Cusco

Fly into Lima and spend a couple of days exploring the city. Head to Cusco to start your Sacred Valley experience. At Piuray Lagoon, enjoy a kayaking or paddleboarding lesson before taking a traditional Andean ceramics class.

Continue to Chinchero, Maras, Moray, and Ollantaytambo, to learn more about the vibrant Inca Civilization. In Huilloc, enjoy a community-based experience that provides a behind-the-scenes look into daily life. Then, take a scenic Vistadome train ride to Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll savor the mystique and adventure of the “Lost City.”

While visiting Machu Picchu, you can also stop into the small town of Aguas Calientes, nestled along the banks of the Urubamba River. There, the whole family can enjoy shops and eateries, or soaking in the hot springs. Then, take a short walk to the Machu Picchu Site Museum and Botanical Garen where you can explore a wide variety of local flora.

You can also discover the architectural wonders of Cusco and Sacsayhuaman or enjoy a horseback riding expedition in the Andes Mountains with a tour guide. For a sweet stop, participate in a chocolate-making workshop at a chocolate museum.

This is the  Peru itinerary  we looked at for planning a trip.

Amazon Extension: Puerto Maldonado

Take a short flight from the Lima Airport into Puerto Maldonado Airport and head to the pier just 15 minutes away. From there, spend 45 minutes sailing along the Madres de Dios River to your hotel, experiencing expansive vistas of the forest along the way.

Choose from a variety of excursions that allow you to explore the rainforest at your own pace. Options include a guided walk to learn more about the Amazon Basin, passing by impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco and the strangler fig. Or, explore the river by night, keeping an eye out for the rainforest’s nocturnal creatures — owls, capybaras, nightjars, alligators, and more.
