LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE

The hike itself is relatively challenging, with steep inclines and rocky terrain, but the stunning vistas at the top make it all worth it. At the summit, you will be able to see the iconic “Sleeping Indian” formation, a mountain that looks like a woman laying on her back. Along the way, you’ll also encounter a diverse array of flora and fauna, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a new adventure, the La India Dormida hike is a must-do activity that should not be missed!

HOW TO GET TO LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE

La India Dormida hike is a loop trail although I guess you can do an out and back to the top of you prefer. That means there are two entrances. However, as you hike up in the dark, it really doesn’t matter how each route looks as you won’t see anything. Therefore it might be best to take the easiest route to the summit. By starting the route at Piedra Pintada, which is on Google Maps below when you zoom in, you hike quickly up to the best viewpoint. This is the head of the Indian.

The beauty of starting at this point is that you get to the summit early and first and then once you wait for the sun to rise while this viewpoint the trail will slowly be illuminated. Now you can enjoy the whole trail along the edge of the crater in sunlight to take full advantage of the epic views.

To reach Piedra Pintada, which is the trailhead entrance, from the town takes about 10-15 minutes from the central point. There is a little archway and depending on whether someone is manning the station or not you may have to pay an entrance fee of $3. We didn’t and I haven’t paid an entrance fee yet in Anton Valley, although it is low season.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE

At 4:30 am, we grabbed a coffee and made our way out of Bodhi Hostel in a group of five. It took us about fifteen minutes to reach the Piedra Pintada trailhead. Leaving behind the streetlights and steady ground, we flicked on our torches and phone lights as we began the trek up to the summit.

This early part of the trail is actually quite beautiful. There are lots of little waterfalls, wooden bridges, and river crossings. You won’t see any of them in the dark. What you will get is incredibly sweaty as the humidity under the canopy and the intense incline will have you sweating bullets.

india dormida hike anton valley

It took us the best part of 45 minutes or so at a steady pace to reach the top or the head of the Indian, which is the key viewpoint. Make sure to check the night before for the official sunrise time. I would then leave myself a minimum of 1 hour from when you leave your accommodation but if you want to guarantee you witness the sunrise for all your effort 1.5 hours is perfect.

india dormida hike anton valley

We arrived at the summit at the end of the blue hour, which is the hour before the sun rises when the sky is a rich blue. The summit was windy but not cold. One big tip is to take a spare t-shirt for the top or as I did, keep a jacket in your bag and then remove the shirt and replace it with the jacket. This allowed me to take off my wet shirt that was dripping in sweat and getting cold in the wind. Minor creature comforts but not hard to plan ahead!

india dormida hike anton valley

Unfortunately for us, the clouds seemed to want to ruin the show although above the clouds the sky was clear. We hung out at the top of the mountain, which was slowly coming to light. Slowly the sun managed to break its way above the top of the clouds and then she burst through. In what is the rainy season, we were counting our blessings to have a dry, clear morning and now the sun was coming through with beautiful light for us!

india dormida hike anton valley

Now that the mountains were fully lit, we continued our journey along the cliff-edge path. The views of the crater were amazing and we couldn’t believe how good the weather was or our hike. The glass glowed in the sunshine and we found a few great vantage points to take in the Anton Valley Crater.

india dormida hike anton valley

Slowly the path leads you down and down until you emerge back into the streets of Anton Valley and it once again only takes 15-20 minutes to return from the exit of the trail. You could do it in reverse, but as I mentioned you would be along the cliffs in the dark although you would enjoy the waterfalls in daylight. My suggestion is to do it in the order I did and if you are so interested in the Piedra Pintada waterfalls to revisit them during the day from the Piedra Pintada entrance, which will take you just 10 minutes.

THE LEGEND OF THE SLEEPING INDIAN

Legend has it that Luba, known as ‘Airflower’, was the youngest daughter of heralded Chief Urraca. Urraca was the leader of one of the many Guaymi Tribes in Anton Crater.

Luba was a rebellious girl and despite her tribes fighting with the Spanish for years she fell in love with a Spanish official who lived in the town. Yaravi was a brave warrior from the tribe who loved Luba but she didn’t love him back. Yaravi couldn’t handle this and took his own life, throwing himself off of a mountain while Luba stared in a perplexed fashion.

Luba didn’t want to betray her town and in a desperate panic of crying and mourning, she loses herself in the bushes and dies.

This is the legend of the Sleeping Indian.

ADVENTURE BAG FROM LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE

This is an adventure bag. It is full of trash. Every time I go on an adventure I collect one adventure bag full of trash. It’s my small way of saying thanks to mother nature for allowing me to enjoy her beautiful creations. If we have time to go on an adventure we have time to collect an adventure bag on the way back out of the trail once we have enjoyed the waterfall, the hike or the beach. Adventure hard!

Just to add some extra information. There was a pay booth when we were there and they closed the trail after 16.00. But you can just hike the cerro the other way, beginning at the salida and ending at the pay booth. Nobody will be there anymore and you can then hike for free. Thanks, Jackson for the awesome blog, keep up the good work ✌🏻.

LA INDIA DORMIDA

The most popular hike in Valle de Anton, Panama

La India Dormida is the most popular hike in Valle de Anton, a small town located a 2,5 hours drive from Panama City.

The literal translation of la india dormida is the sleeping indian girl. the mountain has a ridge shaped like the silhouette of a sleeping woman’s body which explains the name., the hike itself is short but relatively challenging due to substantial elevation and a rocky plus -depending on the weather- muddy trail. many decide to hike the trail for sunrise meaning you will have to walk for a good hour in the complete dark which adds up to an extra challenge. the views are going to be worth it though, la india dormida has been one of my favorite hikes i’ve ever done and an absolute must-do during your time in valle de anton in this post you’ll find everything you need to know about the la india dormida hike..

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING LA INDIA DORMIDA I visited Panama in January 2022 and stayed for 5 days in Valle de Anton. Unfortunately for me it had been raining a lot and the weather conditions were not ideal for hiking. Once I met someone in the hostel I was staying at who wanted to join me on the La India Dormida hike for sunrise I decided to take risk. Unsure if we would be able to see the sunrise due to the cloudy weather we got ready for the hike. We left the Bodhi hostel, located in the city center at 4.45 and navigated to the starting point of the trial. Tip: download the free app Maps.me and use the offline map.

It took us around 30 minutes to get to the start of the trail. It was pitch black and we used the torches on our phones to find our way. As mentioned it had been raining the previous days which made the paths quite muddy and slippery at times. We made sure to take our time and be careful! Fifteen minutes into the hike I really started to feel the elevation and I made sure to take it easy. The trail is easy to follow and leads through lush nature. You will also pass by a couple of waterfalls!

It took us about 1 hour to reach the summit. Unfortunately, it was a super cloudy day and we were unable to enjoy the sunrise. It also started raining and the wind was pretty strong. Not the best conditions for a hike but do not worry the views were still absolutely amazing and I absolutely loved the experience!

Once you reach the summit you can either continue the trail south and find your way back to Valle de Anton or alternatively head back the same way you came from. We decided the latter due to the bad weather, the other trail seemed too dangerous with these conditions. An advantage of heading back the same way is being able to enjoy the waterfalls you pass by and stop for a little swim!

Even though the weather conditions were not the best I absolutely loved the experience of hiking through the dark. I do think that watching the sunrise from there must be absolutely magical, hopefully I will return in the future to experience this!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

I went on the La India Dormida hike for sunrise and did not have to pay entrance. During the day you might be charged with a 3 dollars entrance fee.

You can easily reach the trailhead of the La India Dormida by navigating to Piedra Pintada which is a 15-30 minutes walk from Valle de Anton.

La India Dormida is a do-able but challenging hike. Before heading out consider the weather conditions and wear proper shoes.

For those of you considering going to on the hike for sunrise: hiking in the dark ≠ hiking during the day. Bring a source of light and calculate extra time to reach the summit. It would be a shame to actually miss the sunrise!

The total distance of the hike is 4km. It took us 1 hour to reach the summit. During the day I am sure this could have been done in 45 minutes. If you decide on the loop trail the total distance is around 10km.

Bring sufficient water with you and some snacks. I wore a t-shirt and a light jacket to protect myself from the rain. I also recommend taking an extra shirt which you can change into once you reach the summit.

What to Know About the India Dormida Hike in Panama’s Valle de Antón

Share this Post:

In an area known for its variety of hiking options , the climb to the top of La India Dormida formation seems to be the most popular choice. It’s easy to see why: it’s a short and relatively easy hike, but rewards you with awesome views of the entire Valle de Antón .

The drawback of the hike’s popularity is that it can get quite crowded, so I suggest you follow our example and choose an alternative ascent . That way, it’s possible to enjoy the majority of the hike in solitude. Read on for everything you need to know about the India Dormida Hike.

Guided Hiking Tours of La India Dormida

If you prefer to have a knowledgeable local guide with you while exploring La India Dormida, there are several options of guided hiking tours available.

What’s the Story Behind the India Dormida?

If you speak some Spanish, you might wonder about the hike’s name, which translates to the ‘Sleeping Indian Girl’. This goes back to a local legend , after which Flor del Aire, the daughter of a famous indigenous chief, fell in love with a Spanish conquistador.

Yaraví, a young warrior from her tribe who in turn was in love with the princess, threw himself to his death after his advances were rejected. His suicide affected the young woman so deeply that she passed away from grief and guilt and formed into the series of hills , which La India Dormida consists of.

trip la india dormida

With a little bit of imagination, you can actually see the shape of a supine woman while looking at the section of the crater wall in question. Nothing like a tragic aetiological myth to get you in the mood for a hike, right?

How to Get to the Trailhead

The main trailhead to the hike is at the end of Calle La Pintada, at the northeastern edge of town. However, I highly recommend choosing a less popular way up the mountain, to avoid the crowds and make it a round-hike. We started our ascent farther south, near the town’s baseball pitch.

trip la india dormida

We took a taxi there (tell them to drop you at ‘cuadro la reforma’), but if you’re not in a rush, you can also walk to the trailhead. Once at the baseball diamond, simply follow the road west and turn right at the end, where a trail starts climbing up the mountain slope.

How Long Does the Hike Take?

The entire hike took us about 2 hours, with a few stops on top of the ridge, as well as at the petroglyphs and waterfalls on the way down.

trip la india dormida

How Much Does the Hike Cost?

The entrance fee to the hike is said to be 3$, but we didn’t see anyone collecting the fee, neither at the trailhead nor at the end of the hike.

A Description of the India Dormida Hike

This short description of the hike follows the alternative route we took to avoid the crowds and make it a round-trip . Starting from the baseball pitch at the western end of town, you’ll have to follow the road west until the end and then turn right (north) to start climbing the crater wall .

trip la india dormida

After passing a few houses, the trail enters a small patch of forest and steadily climbs up the slope in serpentines. Once you’ve left the trees behind you, the first impressive views of the valley open up. Once you’ve reached the highest point of the trail, you’ll have to turn right to follow the crater rim north .

trip la india dormida

The views opening up of the entire volcanic caldera with the spread-out houses and tree-lined roads of the village are absolutely stunning , but be sure to also watch your step, as the trail is narrow and the drop steep. When we were up there, it was also super windy, so make sure not to step too close to the edge.

Continuing north, you’ll have to climb up and down several steep slopes, before reaching the actual India Dormida ‘summit’ , which is marked by a heavily-contested bench. Take a minute to enjoy the views before continuing north along the trail, which soon starts leading downwards.

trip la india dormida

After climbing down some rocks, you’ll pass through a grove of impressively large strangler figs, before continuing downwards. Keep your eyes peeled for the Piedra del Sapo , a large rock slap marked with prehistoric petroglyphs to the left of the trail.

The rock has been marked with a series of carvings depicting various geometric forms as well as local plants and animals (have a look for the frog!). Dating petroglyphs is notoriously difficult, so it’s hard to tell how long ago they were created, but we found them impressive in any case.

trip la india dormida

Continuing down the trail, you’ll pass various small waterfalls worth a short detour, before finally reaching a much bigger (and more popular) rock with petroglyphs of more geometric forms. This is locally known as the ‘Piedra Pintada’ (translating to painted rocks, although the colours have clearly been added recently to make the carvings more visible).

After that, the final part of the trail will lead past some private homes, where you can buy a well-deserved duro (a popsicle made by freezing fruit juice in a plastic bag) from the locals. We tried a tamarind-flavoured one and weren’t disappointed. Finally, the trail will join Calle La Pintada, which you can follow east to get back to the town centre.

Where to Stay in El Valle de Antón

We stayed at a wonderful AirBnB called Armadillo Shelter , which was located in a converted camper van and surrounded by a beautiful little garden. It’s one of the best AirBnBs I’ve ever stayed in, and I can highly recommend it.

Otherwise, if you’re on a tight budget, try Bodhi Hostel & Lounge , which has both dormitories and private rooms available. A well-rated midrange hotel option would be The Golden Frog Inn , while Casa Madre Tierra would be a more luxurious choice. Have a look at the map below for more options.

Know the beauty of this country., beautiful sunrise on la india dormida hill and its legend.

Sunrise on La India Dormida Hill

La India Dormida Hill is one of the best known hills in Panama, for its peculiar shape and for being part of the walls of one of the few inhabited volcanoes in the world. In addition, it is only 2 hours from the capital.

I have seen so many beautiful photos of sunrises on beaches and mountains, now, I want to visit them and be able to contemplate a sunrise or sunset from one of these places, this time La India Dormida Hill.

Hiking La India Dormida Hill

Being in El Valle de Ant ó n (Anton Valley) with some friends, we took the opportunity to climb La India Dormida Hill (the Sleeping Indigenous).

We woke up at 4:00 a.m. to get ready and leave the hostel, heading to the hill.

trip la india dormida

For those who do not know it, this hill is named sleeping indigenous because of its peculiar shape of a lying woman , there is also a legend about it, later I will tell it to you.

We walked through the town and once we no longer had the street light, we began to use our lamps, I recommend headlamps with a good battery, because the one I was using ran out, when we started to climb the hill.

We started to climb the head of La India Dormida Hill , well- known pass, we passed by the Piedra Pintada (painted stone, the petroglyph), there are some signs (white arrows painted on stone and trees) but, they are not very visible and less at night.

Right after the painted stone, we take a trail that is on the left-hand side, it is not seen at all.

If Jerry is not with us, we would have taken another trail because, although he told us, the left-hand, take the left-hand we did not believe him, because nothing was seen.

Jimara Coronado at La India Dormida Hill.

Many years ago, like about 10 , I did this trail, however, there is a part, like a third that has changed, now it is taken the other way.

The trail looks a bit like that of La Cruz Hill in Campana, due to the steepness and the stones and roots of the trail.

trip la india dormida

We left a little late , about 10 minutes, but for a sunrise, every second counts, and well, we were going quite fast, which somehow affected me, because I almost fainted, I got a little dizzy, I had to stop and sit on the ground, until it was pass me.

Fortunately, a friend stayed to accompany me, I was worried, because I did not want that because of my fault, he will miss the sunrise.

Now, that was not the only thing that happened to me , after one of the twins’ muscles tried to mount on my right leg.

I fell to the floor because of pain, I stayed for a while giving myself massages and trying to relax the muscle, I continued and meters later it was the turn of the other leg, here I fell into a bad position, I could fall down the mountain, but I could not move, so my friend, Josias placed me in a safe place.

After we move on and we get there before sunrise.

Sunrise

La India Dormida Hill

I stayed the first stop that I saw, it is like the forehead and Josias met with the others, I think at the nose of La India Dormida Hill.

After taking some photos I went with the others and we stayed for a long time, taking photos, videos and fighting with a lot of flying insects that had probably brought the rain the day before.

From this point my photos begin, since I now had light to take them.

Definitely appreciating the sunrise from a mountain is a spectacle of nature, seeing how everything is illuminated, starting with a yellow color, and that was not a day when the clouds are down and cover the entire town.

Sunrise at La India Dormida.

From there you can see not only the town of El Valle de Antón, but also beaches and even the Penonomé Wind Farm .

Then we advance to go down the other side, they told me that we went down through the navel.

I was in the middle of the group, distanced from each other and as always from taking photos, in some moment I was last, hahaha.

How good there are small hills, so in one of them I could see the rest of the group and meet with them.

Insects

We started the descent and right there the #AventureBag , it is cleaner on this side, but still we picked up some things like beer cans.

Adventure Bag.

On the other side I cannot appreciate the trail because we went up in the dark, but it was charming on this side.

Because, the trees form a roof like stories, in addition to some very photogenic mushrooms that I found on the way.

On that side there is no signposting, but it is not very difficult to get to and it may be that it is even safer, because along the trail of the head they tend to steal a lot.

It seemed to me, to climb at night, that trail t is better, because there is less vegetation, so you can take advantage of the moonlight and the air can feel better to breathe, it also feels that it is less than meters from mountain to climb.

Also, going down, I only had to take 2 times to the left-hand, at the points where I did not know which way to go and soon I was in town.

We left just right-hand t to the Temple of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

trip la india dormida

Investigating a little more I found interesting information, first of all, as we know, El Valle de Antón is an extinct volcano that erupted many years ago (300 thousand), and the product of it is the current form.

However, the hair Forest of la India Dormida is because this part is older than the eruption (about 6.5 million years old).

Giving time to degrade it and turn it into soil, where vegetation can grow. Information from my friends of Alma Aventurera.

La India Dormida Legend

Flor del Aire (it is a name), maiden, daughter of the cacique Urraca , fell in love with one of the Spanish colonizers.

Because of that, she despised the Yarav í indigenous man, one of the bravest warriors. Yaraví, sad committed suicide, throwing himself from the top of a mountain, Flor del Aire saw him.

For not betraying her people, she decided not to see Spanish again.

She wandered through the mountains, she lay down and death surprised her, nature decided to perpetuate that love and took the shape of her body.

El Valle de Anton, Panama – What to See & Do on a Short Visit

travel tips for El Valle de Anton, Panama

Why should you visit El Valle de Anton?

Good question! Until recently I had never heard of the small town of El Valle de Anton ( Anton’s Valley in English ).

But, now that I have visited, explored the area and met some very friendly locals, I can tell you that El Valle de Anton is a cute town definitely worth taking the time to visit!

So, let me share with you the highlights of this pretty little town.

Tip: although El Valle de Anton has enough to offer to spend several days, a day trip from Panama City is a good option to see the highlights.

Things to Do in El Valle de Anton, Panama

1. el valle’s market.

Things to do in El Valle de Anton: handicraft market

A main landmark in this small town is El Valle’s public market , which is open seven days a week, although it is sometimes referred to as El Valle’s Sunday Market.

This colorful market offers a nice selection of handicrafts sold directly by the local artisans . You will see most artisans on Sunday and that is also why the market attracts the most visitors on this day.

The indigenous people walk in from the surrounding mountains to sell their wares. These include framed molas (Panama’s most famous native handicraft, part of the traditional dress of Kuna Indians of Panama), colorfully painted trays carved from local hardwoods, figurines carved from soapstone and Panama hats .

Next to the artisans you will find stands selling local fruits, vegetables, and plants.

2. Zip-lining & Chorro El Macho waterfall

What to do in El Valle de Anton: zip-lining in El Valle de Anton, Panama

This is a must-do when in El Valle de Anton!

Located just outside of town you’ll find Canopy Adventure.

After a short, easy hike through the beautiful rainforest, you reach the first zip-line. If you are anything like me, looking down and seeing how fast that zip-line goes will probably get you both excited and nervous, but trust me, the staff are great and the experience is amazing!

Soaring through the treetops, you experience a wealth of natural beauty. The steepest of the zip-lines whisks you right past the amazing Chorro El Macho, the largest waterfall in the region .

A memorable experience for both thrill-seekers and nature lovers!

Even if zip-lining is absolutely not for you, a visit is still more than worthwhile. You can skip the adrenaline rush and instead enjoy a nice hike through the beautiful forest, check out the waterfall and end your walk at the chilly (or let’s say “refreshing”) natural pool.

And, this area is great for bird watching as well.

Visit Canopy Adventure’s website for more information.

3. Butterfly Haven

The Butterfly Haven in El Valle de Anton is great for nature lovers, families, and anyone with an interest in ecology.

This attraction offers a short but lovely insight into the various butterflies found in the region.

The tour takes under an hour so you can easily combine it with other activities. Centrally located, you can walk to Butterfly Haven from El Valle’s main street.

Go to Butterflyhavenpanama.com for more information

4. El Valle’s Public Hot Springs & Mud Bath

Things to do in El Valle de Anton - El Valle de Anton hot springs, Panama

Bathe in hot thermal water pools at the village’s thermal springs and indulge in a therapeutic volcanic mud bath with the volcanic healing clay, said to be extremely good for the skin .

Don’t expect too much, the facilities are basic and it can get crowded at times but it’s worth checking out while visiting El Valle de Anton.

The natural surroundings are, like anywhere else in this area, beautiful.

5. Hiking Around El Valle de Anton: La India Dormida and the Cloud Forests

What to do in El Valle de Anton - hiking in Anton's Valley, Panama

The good hiking trails around Anton Valley are a reason for many to visit this part of Panama.

There are two hikes with mountain scenery around El Valle de Anton .

The first is a hike to the top of La India Dormida (the sleeping Indian woman). You can see this mountain from the town center and if you look closely you can see it: it looks exactly like a sleeping woman.

La India Dormida comes with an interesting legend : Flor del Aire, daughter of Urraca, the most successful Chief in Panama fighting against the Conquistadores, fell in love with one of the Spanish soldiers. Yavari, one of the strongest fighters of her tribe, vied for her affection. When she did not return his love, in despair, he jumped to his death from a mountain top before the Princess’ eyes. In sorrow Princess Flor del Aire left her home.

She crossed mountains and valleys bitterly weeping over her fate. Above the beaches of the Caribbean she fell dead looking back at the beloved mountains where she was born. The mountains were so touched by this sad love story they decided to form the shape of the Princess, and that is how the India Dormida arose.

The hike takes around 3 hours and has spectacular views of the valley . To cool off at the end you can take a swim in a beautiful natural pool.

The second hike is a nature hike in the cloud forests of Gaital National Monument nature preserve.

The Gaital National Park covers 335 hectares (827 acres) on the northern edge of El Valle de Anton. The Spanish name of the park is Monumento Natural Cerro Gaital.

The peak of Cerro Gaital rises more than 1,200m (3,500 feet) above sea level. On a clear day, one can see both oceans: the Pacific and The Caribbean.

The hike up and back takes two to three hours, depending on how much bird-watching you do.

Tip: Planning to go hiking alone? Then read this article with safety tips for solo hiking .

6. El Valle’s Spa at Caracoral Hotel

Things to do in El Valle de Anton Panama - spa treatment

In need of some relaxation? Then visit the Spa at Caracoral Boutique Hotel. Somewhat pricey but they offer a good selection of massages and other treatments.

Professional, friendly staff and a lovely property. The surroundings are peaceful with a beautiful outdoor thermal swimming pool.

Address:   Av los Millonarios, El Valle de Antón, Panama

And if you are looking for where to stay in El Valle de Anton, Caracoral Boutique Hotel is a good option. Another hotel I really enjoyed is The Golden Frog Inn .

Enjoy Visiting El Valle de Anton!

I hope this list gave you an idea of things to do in El Valle de Anton and why this town is worth a visit.

I’ll end this article with some information about El Valle de Anton, it’s unique location and other useful information.

About El Valle de Anton

about El Valle de Anton, Panama

El Valle de Anton, often referred to simply as El Valle or in English, Anton’s Valley, has a geologically unique setting: it is nestled in the second largest volcano crater in the world .

The five by three mile crater was created when a volcano blew up five million years ago. Initially a crater lake, the valley was gradually populated by indigenous tribes from the surrounding mountains.

With a population of 8,000, this small, picturesque town, just two hours from Panama City, is a great getaway from the hustle and heat of the city.

You can book day trips to El Valle de Anton from Panama City online.

Some of the people who own properties in the heart of El Valle de Anton are wealthy people from Panama City who use the area as their vacation or weekend home.

Popular activities in the area include cycling, hiking, horseback riding, and birdwatching (El Valle is home to around 500 species of birds).

The rich volcanic soil makes this area extremely green and filled with wildlife . It is home to the famous near-extinct Golden Frog.

With an almost perfect year-round spring climate, any time of the year is therefore a good time to visit El Valle de Anton!
