Pulp is an English alternative rock band from Sheffield consisting of Jarvis Cocker, Candida Doyle, Nick Banks, Steve Mackey and Mark Webber.

In 1978 when Jarvis Cocker and Peter Dalton were only teenagers, they formed the band Arabicus Pulp while at The City School in Sheffield. In 1981 the group gave their demo to BBR 1 Radio DJ John Peel, who gave them a Peel Session, thus increasing their local popularity. Despite their exposure on national radio, success was not forthcoming and, apart from Cocker, most of the core line-up left for university; Simon and David Hinkler, Wayne Furniss, Peter Boam, Gary Wilson and Saskia Cocker then joined Cocker.

Together as a new lineup, they managed to get enough local backing to record a mini-album in late 1982, entitled “It.” However, the album failed commercially, and after continued failed success the Cocker was set to disband then group; that is, until a new incarnation of Pulp was formed. The result was their signing with Fire Records, and releasing “Freaks” in 1987. “Freaks” which had been pushed back from its original release date was not well received. Due to the continued turmoil of getting the band on a momentum, Cocker returned to his studies, effectively disbanding the group; that is, until Cocker met with Steve Mackey, who joined the group as a bass player.

In mid-1989, they began recording another album called “Separations” which they released in 1992, but not before leaving their label to sign with Warp Records. The release of singles as well as the album garnered much attention from both fans and critics alike, earning them Mercury Prize nominations, as well as chart topping singles. This sudden increase in popularity was helped by the massive media interest in Britpop, helping them gain more success overseas. Released in October 1995, their next album, “Different Class” also garnered significant critical praise and debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart.

During the period of high attention from music critics as well as tabloids, Russell Senior decided to leave the band. Additionally, Cocker was having difficulty with the celebrity lifestyle, battling cocaine addiction and a break-up of a long-term relationship. They did release “This Is Hardcore” in 1998, but essentially fell from the public eye until 2001 with the release of “We Love Life.” The group set out on tour, hitting the United Kingdom where they would play their last show before taking an extended hiatus.

While on hiatus, Cocker worked on multiple side projects including a solo project, and in 2010 the announcement of their reuniting was made, as well as an announcement of 22 concerts between May and September 2011, taking place in Europe and Australia. On 25 December 2012, Pulp made a previously unreleased track, "After You," a song that had only previously existed as a demo.

Live reviews

Pulp live are an experience worth having. I saw them at the Brixton Academy in 2011. Jarvis Cocker is a modern miracle. He danced across the stage, strutting, high kicking and leaping, like a herky-jerky marionette animated by the audience, by the music and by his immeasurable ego.

The band brought out many favourites from their huge catalogue, energising the crowd and persuading them to sing and dance along with passion. This was one of those occasions where the music genuinely rejuvenated - we were, audience and band alike, flung back into the 90s of our youth. We danced, we sang, we screamed at the sky. Jarvis, for that moment, was our tinpot god and we worshipped him like false idols were going out of fashion.

Pulp's music live is a little faster, a little more energetic than on record. The crowd lifts the band and urges on the tempo. They bite into tunes like Disco 2000 - a personal favourite - Wickerman, Lipgloss and Common People and elevate them to something hardcore, passionate and occasionally terrifying. These are the great heroes of Britpop, you deserve to feel them live.

Pulp Announce First North American Tour Since 2012

By Jazz Monroe

Pulp band with Jarvis Cocker

Pulp will tour North America for the first time in more than a decade this September. Cocker and his band, having played a streak of European shows last year, will perform in Chicago, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York as part of their This Is What We Do for an Encore Tour. More European shows are also in the schedule.

In a press release, Jarvis Cocker said, “So, the encore continues. The songs came back to life and they want to be heard. They need to be heard. Come out and have some fun with us. You deserve it. Yes. You do.” Support will come from Escape-ism, a band Cocker describes as “the Found-Sound-Dream-Drama featuring Ian Svenonius & Sandi Denton.” The tour is dedicated the late Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, who died in March last year.

Pulp Announces Rare International Tour in 2024

by Em Casalena March 18, 2024, 1:10 pm

English indie-rock band Pulp rarely comes stateside, but it looks like they’re going to make a few stops in the US and Canada this year on a short international tour . The band will hit stops in California, New York, Illinois, and Ontario on the North American leg of the tour after finishing their international stops in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This will be the first time in over a decade that Pulp will visit North American fans! And it doesn’t look like any supporting acts have been announced.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Pulp 2024 Tour will start on May 24 in Amsterdam at AFAS Live. The tour will close on September 18 in Los Angeles, California at the Hollywood Palladium.

If you want to get tickets to the This Is What We Do For An Encore Tour, you have a few options. For international tour dates, we recommend checking out what’s available on Viagogo . If you want to get your hands on presale tickets, check out Ticketmaster . It looks like presale events for most of the North American tour dates will launch on March 19 at 10:00 am CDT.

General on-sale starts on March 22 at 10:00 am CDT, after which we recommend seeing what you can get on Stubhub . Stubhub is a great spot to score general sale tickets, and you might get lucky and find seats that are less expensive than face value.

“So, the encore continues,” said Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker in a press release for the tour. “The songs came back to life and they want to be heard. They need to be heard. Come out and have some fun with us. You deserve it.”

Tickets won’t last for this ultra-rare tour, so reserve your spot before they sell out!

“Steve should have been here for this festival, and it would be nice if you all think of him”: Pulp and PJ Harvey pay tribute to Steve Albini at Primavera Sound

The Spanish festival also named a stage after the late producer and noise rock provocateur

Pulp and PJ Harvey performing live in 2024

Britpop icons Pulp and alt-rock singer/songwriter PJ Harvey paid tribute to Steve Albini at the Primavera Sound festival in Spain over the weekend.

The four-day event, held this year from May 29 to June 2 in Barcelona, also named a stage after the late alternative producer and musician.

His band, Shellac, were scheduled to perform at the weekender before his passing.

On May 30, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker dedicated the 1995 Different Class track Something Changed to Albini.

“This tour [Pulp’s 2023 to 2024 reunion run] has been a strange one,” Jarvis told the crowd (per Brooklyn Vegan ).

“We started in the UK… and it’s the first that we’ve done without Steve Mackey, our bassist. He passed away, and I’d like to dedicate this song to him. There’s another Steve that passed away recently, Steve Albini. I know that there’s a stage now named after him at the festival.

Cocker continued more lightheartedly: “If you’re named Steve, don’t worry. This is a song about life, really. When you meet a certain person, they change your life and it goes in a direction you could never ever think of.”

Harvey, who worked with Albini on her 1993 album Rid Of Me , dedicated her performance of 2004 song The Desperate Kingdom Of Love to Albini when she played on June 1.

“I would like to sing this next song in memory of Steve Albini,” the musician told her audience (per Stereogum ).

“Steve should have been here for this festival, and it would be nice if you all think of him.”

Albini died of a heart attack in his Chicago home on May 7 at the age of 61.

As well as fronting Shellac and noise rock idols Big Black, Albini produced seminal alternative albums including Pixies ’ Surfer Rosa (1988) and Nirvana ’s In Utero (1993).

Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024: 7 Best Things We Saw

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Primavera Sound Barcelona has long been renowned for brilliant lineups in an idyllic setting, the setting flanked by the Mediterranean Sea with the Spanish city as its backdrop. This year’s iteration was no exception, drawing an estimated 193,000 people from around the world to witness an eclectic mix of artists that included Lana Del Rey , SZA, Pulp , Troye Sivan , and PJ Harvey .

But Primavera’s appeal goes beyond the music. It serves as a reminder of what drew fans to festivals for decades prior: bonding over music, feeling a sense of community, and enjoying cultural experiences in an unhurried, relaxed setting. From crowd flow to food offerings to later start times, it was all these little things that — as a Primavera first-timer — added up and took the experience of seeing great music in a great venue from fun to fantastic.

There’s no consensus amid those in the industry on the precipitous lack of ticket sales as we head into summer 2024 summer fest season, but some cite a dearth of headliner talent. Others cite the cost of tickets, which doesn’t even factor in the cost of travel and accommodation for non-locals. There is also the growing push of multiple VIP levels, which even smaller fests like Pitchfork are capitalizing on for the first time, and at some fests the VIP areas take space away from the general ticket holder to get closer to the stage to see their favorite acts.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

You Don’t Even Need a Ticket to Catch Some Primavera Offerings Seriously. Charli XCX , who performed at the fest, also played a free surprise show in the middle of the day on Saturday for anyone who turned up.

Committing to Equity In 2018, several festivals pledged to achieve a 50/50 gender balance in its lineups with the goal to achieve it by 2022. Primavera Sound was the first major festival to accomplish it, and they did so beginning in 2019. Its focus on an inclusive lineup — a 42.36 percent equal split of women and male artist ratio, and a 15.28 percent representing non-binary and mixed project musicians — was palpable just strolling between sets at any given moment. And though unfortunately, two major acts pulled out prior to the festival — Kim Petras, who dropped out of her summer fest dates citing “health reasons”; and FKA Twigs , who was also scheduled to perform last year’s installment but did not perform then, either — the intentionality of the festival showcasing diversity was still felt throughout the weekend. Saturday was a standout in this regard, with the topline comprising SZA, PJ Harvey, Mitski, Charli XCX, Bikini Kill, and Romy. Lana Del Rey’s set the night before was also among the most crowded come headliner time. Also shout-out to Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko!, whose spirited, sassy set showcased quirky, acrobatic choreography and songs that spanned J-pop and J-rock styles with their own playful twists — it was a total delight.

Amaarae was originally slated to perform on Saturday but her time slot and performance day was changed. That meant people could catch her packed set on the first day of the fest. The way her stage was situated, you could see her and hear her perfectly perched to the side of the stage’s location. The same kind of vantage came when heading over to see the Last Dinner Party, whose set included the excellent “My Lady of Mercy” and the whirling dervish deliciousness of “Nothing Matters.” Theirs was an early set for the fest, commencing at 6:50 p.m., yet their stage area was crowded. However, sitting way back from the crowd at the stage we could see and hear everything without obstruction.

All Fests Should Start Later During the official festival days, the first artists do not go on before 4:30 p.m. and that is genius for both artists and attendees. Relatively newer artists, such as the Last Dinner Party, played to a full house. This does also mean that Primavera Sound goes late and hard with the last set ending at 6 a.m., which works well for the jet-lagged set, but it also works well in other ways. Generally, the full-on dance party portions of the lineup begins after 1 a.m. (Justice, Disclosure, Charli XCX all being perfectly scheduled for the late-night post-recharge times) and some fans don’t even arrive until then, or even later (everyone with a fest pass can leave and come back at any time before 3 a.m.). It also means if one is on a budget, one is not stuck inside the venue with no other options but to spend more on food and drink. Speaking of eating, the fest also allows attendees to bring in their own food and an empty water bottle with no cap to refill at water stations. Honestly, this should be the way everywhere.

PJ Harvey performed in a downpour befitting the solemn and sweet goodbye she bid to her friend . Typically not one to banter much between songs, Harvey took a touching moment to reflect on the loss of Albini, who served as the engineer for Harvey’s trailblazing 1993 album, Rid of Me . “I would like to sing this next song in memory of Steve Albini,” she said before performing a goosebump rendering “The Desperate Kingdom of Love,” a heart-wrenching track from 2004’s Uh Huh Her . “Steve should have been here for this festival. And it would be nice if we all think of him for this song.” As well, she performed songs from the album they worked together on, including “50ft Queenie” and “Man-Size.”

Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker paid tribute to two Steves during their set on Thursday. “So, this tour has been a strange one,” he said. “It started in the U.K. last year… and it’s the first tour we’ve done without Steve Mackey our bass player [who died in March 2023 ], he passed away. We intend to dedicate this song to him.

“There’s another Steve that passed away recently, Steve Albini. I know that there’s a stage now named after him here at the festival.” Lightening up the mood a little, he added, “If you’re called Steve, don’t get worried,” he said, cracking a small smile. “This is a song about life, really, about when you meet a certain person, they change your life and your life goes in a direction you could never ever think of.”

They performed “Something Changed” from 1995’s Different Class in honor of Mackey and Albini, who Jarvis worked with on his solo album, 2009’s Further Complications .

‘i’ll admit i blew it’: michael richards talks kramer, vietnam, and that racist outburst, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence, trump allies sue to allow election officials to refuse to certify results.

Vampire Weekend didn’t mention the Trump news, but Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker did during their orchestra-backed set that followed. Ever the legendary, charismatic frontman, who commanded the stage with banter and jokingly asked if the audience minded if he had a little rest on a couch onstage between crowd favorites that included “Disco 2000,” “This Is Hardcore,” and after “Pink Glove” — he wasn’t going to let history slip by without comment. “Maybe things will change. Donald Trump got found guilty on all charges,” he said, raising his arms in the air to loud cheers. “That could be good, see the fucker in prison.”

So, thanks for making history, Vampire Weekend, Pulp, and Primavera Sound, it’s these unforgettable shared musical memories that will long resonate. Hasta la próxima!

‘We paid £24,000 to tour the US but Taylor comes here for free!’: how America is crippling UK acts

L ast month, a stellar line-up took to the stage at the Cruel World Festival in Los Angeles, where American fans had paid between £200 and £2400 to fill their Doc Marten boots with quintessentially British music from bands and artists including Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Gary Numan , The Stranglers and Heaven 17.

“What a line-up! Are you excited?” I asked the Stranglers’ bass guitarist, punk veteran Jean-Jacques Burnel. “No I’m f—ing not! F— the Americans. I’ve toured there since the 70s but we probably won’t bother going again. It’s just getting too difficult. We’ve all had to traipse down to the US embassy in London to grovel in for visas. Again . And they keep putting the prices up. We’ve had to fork out 24 grand before we can even get on a f–––––– plane.”

Sil Willcox, his manager for 40 years, calmly explained: “It now costs twice as much to take a band to the States as it did in 2019. The USA is becoming more protectionist. Something needs to be done.”

Willcox outlined the routine. “Whether you’re a roadie or the lead singer, you have to petition for a work permit/visa in person at the US embassy. And, whereas visas used to last a whole year, artists now have to reapply with every visit. They tell you there’s a four-month backlog, so you pay for the premium accelerated service to be on the safe side. Hence [why it cost] £24,000 for a party of eight – the four band members plus three crew and tour manager. And then our own government slaps 20 per cent VAT on top of that. What’s more, UK artists have to pay US federal and state taxes (as well as tax back in the UK), so a further £8000 is needed to hire a US tax advisor who can ensure they don’t get taxed instantly on gross fees in the US.”

Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 faced his worst experience in March 2020, when it “only cost” £17,000. “The band had all been and got our papers but our tour manager Marc went along one Monday morning and took a ticket for the queue. He was number 44. Then all hell let loose. Alarms were going off, the building was being locked down. So was the whole country! Marc didn’t get his visa and none of us got to the US – or our money back!” The only reason he agreed to Cruel World, adds Gregory, is that “we’ve managed to book us a gig in San Francisco the following night and will break even.”

Gary Numan reveals that back in the day, artists still lost money on touring, but their record sales made up for it. “I was losing £20,000 a night on touring but I was shifting loads of albums and making masses of money on those. The gigs promoted record sales.”

Today, however, streaming has decimated income from record sales. So, says Numan, “If I don’t do live stuff my annual income is down 75 per cent. You’ve got to tour”.

He continues: “I now live in LA. When the three British guys in my band come to join me we pay about £3000 for each of them to enter the US. The visa used to be for a whole year. But now they insist you re-apply each visit, so it doesn’t pay to do one-off shows and when I was asked to play Cruel World again I said ‘No!’ But then they upped their offer so it did cover costs.”

And don’t imagine it would be any easier if we were still in the EU. Bertrand Burgalat is a French musician and producer who tells me it was much easier 20 years ago. “On landing in the US, we’d split up before joining the passport queue. If asked why we were carrying guitars we’d just say “Oh I might jam on a beach.” We never bothered with any paperwork, now every immigration officer has a computer in front of them.”

Getting into France for US musicians, however, is a different story. “Taylor Swift is being welcomed into the EU with open arms. For free!”

But do we really need to shed a tear for rock stars just because they’re having to fork out the cost of, say, yet another flashy motorbike?

Well, yes. In 2022, the music industry contributed £6.7 billion to the UK economy, generated £4 billion in exports and accounted for 210,000 jobs. And it’s been a valuable soft power ever since the Beatles first landed in America in February 1964 . After one appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show they instantly became the best-known band in America, returning later that year for a 25-city US tour to be greeted by 9,000 hysterical girls at San Francisco airport.

Today’s UK artists such as Adele, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Coldplay have had dozens of albums reach Number One on both sides of the pond. Only the US exports more music than us – and their population is over five times bigger. But still, with only seven acts ever having sold more than a quarter of a billion albums each, just three are American. And four are British.

British music is adored all over the world. Across Africa, I’ve found record shops full of posters of our pop stars. And only by the power of the pen was I waved into Zambia as soon as the border guard spied my BBC “Steve Wright in the Afternoon” biro at Victoria Falls. Another time, in a dusty Louisiana backwater bar, I was asked to dance by the local chief of police. When he found out where I was from, his only line of enquiry was “Do you know the Beatles? Man, they turned this town on its head.”

UK Music, the umbrella body for our music industry, told me that “UK music punches above its weight internationally; helps improve our reputation abroad; is a key national asset that brings social and economic benefits to the UK. Consequently over half of people [in a recent survey] feel that the Government should be doing more to support musicians and to ensure they can work abroad. We have been lobbying the government for years to do just that by negotiating with the USA.”

The government hasn’t always been so reluctant to support pop’s potential. During Beatlemania, Harold Wilson, the PM with a pipe, recognised that not only did topping the Billboard Charts bring in big bucks, but it could also improve Britain’s dreary post-war image and boost tourism. So he wasted no time in jumping on the bandwagon, posing for photos with the Fab Four, showering them with awards and even taking to the stage at the Cavern Club to say “Cheers to the Merseybeat and pop in general”.

Then in May 1997, the new Labour prime minister Tony Blair was indeed The People’s Pop Fan, plying the biggest players in BritPop – Oasis, Blur and Pulp – with praise and prosecco at Number 10.

His successor Gordon Brown claimed to admire the Arctic Monkeys. And then along came Smiths superfan David Cameron. At least they backed British music. Nowadays, it’s as if  Number 10 doesn’t know it’s Aerosmith from its Elbow. Only last week, Rishi Sunak revealed some of his favourite artists to be Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson and Chris Stapleton – all American country stars.

He is also a self-confessed Swifty, and will soon be heading to Wembley to watch US pop titan Taylor Swift, whose 15 UK stadium dates this summer will earn her $500 million. Yes but how much will she have to pay to enter the UK?

According to lawyer Gillian McCall of Richmond Chambers Covent Garden, who specialises in assisting artists coming to perform here, so long as “the engagements for which the individual is paid will take place within the first 30 days of their arrival, and their total time in the UK will last less than six months, US nationals need not pay a penny”. Right. So nothing.

Better tell Burnel.

“How much?  F——g hell! “  Spluttered my punk pal.  “Hardly a level f——g playing field is it?!”

“It’s OK for us. We’ve sold millions of albums. But it’s all too much for young emerging bands trying to break into the US nowadays. What’s going to happen to them? To British music? It’s about time our government showed support and did something to help.”

OK. Any message for the incumbent government after Fourth of July?

“US/UK, special relationship? My arse!”

Jharrel Jerome in 'I'm a Virgo'

“13-foot tall Black Man in Oakland.”

That’s how “I’m a Virgo” creator Boots Riley pitched his latest show to actor Jharrel Jerome . “This is the wildest title to an email I’ve seen. I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Jerome tells Variety ‘s  Awards Circuit Podcast . A week later, Riley was in his hotel room, with a briefcase painting a picture of how this show would look like – and he had mini figurines so Jerome could have a visual.

The Amazon Prime Video series follows 19-year-old Cootie (Jerome), a 13 feet tall “giant.” He ends up under attack when the city of Oakland learns about his existence.

Jerome, whose credits include “Moonlight,” “When They See Us” and “Concrete Cowboy,” admits he was both scared and excited by the prospect of the character. Revealing how things worked on set to give the illusion of Cootie as a giant, he says, “I didn’t look at any of my scene partners in the eyes for any of the scenes. I had to either look at an X mark for an eyeline or a miniature doll that they designed.”

The in-camera practicalities meant scenes often took up to two hours to shoot because specificities were involved.

To get inside Cootie’s mindset, Jerome explains he stopped looking at the character as a giant. Instead, he approached the character as someone experiencing childlike wonder.  “I played into his fragility pretty much and his naivete.” He continues, “He’s 19 years old, but he’s been confined in his life and confined in his home his whole life by his parents.”

Jerome also talks about his quiet fanboy moment. In the series, he acts opposite Walton Goggins who plays The Hero, a sinister vigilante who he goes toe-to-toe with. Having admired Goggins’ work in “The Hateful Eight,” was a moment for the young actor. “He’s a legend,” says Jerome.

Later in the episode, Jerome admits to being a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, having watched his films while in school. “I saw ‘Reservoir Dogs’ first. And then I saw ‘Pulp Fiction’ right after. After that, it was set for me in terms of what kind of films I loved. He shaped what kind of films I ended up falling in love with, and that’s character-driven films.”

When he’s not acting, Jerome turns his attention to his other love, music. He made his music debut in 2020 with the single “For Real.” And while he has released a single here and there, that space, for now, is for him. “I do it because of me. No one’s ever told me to do it.”

Writing music is something he considers to be therapeutic and is constantly inspired by. He pulls out his phone and opens his Notes app. It is an endless scroll of notes that he has made at all hours of the day. He has an idea for a song that he wants to write inspired about not being in a person’s life anymore. “It might be a heartbreak song. It’s a song about this house that’s far away,” he teases.

He certainly has the material to drop an album – he has over 400 songs on his phone. “I could listen to my music for 10 days straight,” he laughs. “I’m going to succeed in the music. I feel confident in it,” he promises.

Having filmed “I’m A Virgo” and dabbled in the fantasy world, he admits to watching more fantasy films and having a deeper appreciation for them. No, he hasn’t seen the Harry Potter films or the “Lord of the Rings” films, but they’re on his list.

“I could play a talking dragon,” he jokes.

Meanwhile, also on this episode, “Fargo” season 5, which premiered last november, stars Juno Temple as Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, a Minnesota housewife whose dark secrets are about to be revealed — now that ruthless North Dakota sheriff Roy Tillman (played by Jon Hamm) has found her. Roy is a rancher, preacher and constitutional lawman who believes that only he is above the law.

Hawley also discusses the unique tone and vibe of “Fargo,” despite changes in setting, cast, and time period. “I really wanted to look at this idea of Minnesota Nice, which Joel and Ethan [Coen] kind of defined in the movie Fargo, which is, which is basically people who don’t know how to be anything but polite. And and so, as their stress level goes up, they don’t know how to express themselves. And so they don’t, they can’t bend, they just break.

“But there’s nothing passive about the aggression we see in our country right now,” he says. “Nobody’s pretending to be nice anymore. That basic decency, that social contract, how do we get that back? Which is a big part of Dot’s journey [in Season 5]. She wants to be that decent person: Loving marriage, raising her daughter. The world keeps coming at her to say no, we’re gonna force you to live in in this other world — and she refuses to live in that world.”

Hawley notes that British humor and Jewish humor both impacted his writing style and can be seen in “Fargo.” “‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,’ Douglas Adams was a huge influence on me,” he says. “And my father had spent time over in in England, and brought back a bunch of the Goon Show records, Peter Sellars and Spike Milligan. I grew up listening to those really absurdist radio plays. And then, of course, ‘Monty Python’ came came along. And so all of those elements of that sort of dryness, the absurdity of it, they’re a little bit mean, but but not unkind. But then on the other side, I also have the, the long tradition of Jewish humor. And there’s, there’s some interesting similarities in a way and that’s the Cohens’ tone of voice I feel like marries up well with with the British sensibility, especially when it lands in in the Midwest.”

As for casting Hamm — who has been straddling both comedy and drama in his career in recent years — Hawley says, “Jon Hamm is a Muppet. When you when you hang out with him, he is one of those faces those elastic faces, and he’s his game for anything. He he understands the comedy instinctually but he’s also the straight man at the same time.”

Later, we discuss the season finale, including satisfying conclusion to Jon Hamm’s character’s storyline, as well as the themes of justice and responsibility in a society, with a focus on the character of Roy Tillman and his representation of Trumpism.

Then, Hawley shares his take on reinventing the “Alien” franchise, how it’s separate from the movie franchise and will have its own mythology.
