Produce Farm Tours

Agriculture is the second largest industry on Maui , so dive into the local flavors with tropical fruit, freshly grown vegetables, or Maui coffee.

1. O’o Farm Coffee Tour

Head upcountry for an immersive farm tour and farm-to-table experience with O’o Farm. Start your morning with a cup of their French press coffee and head out on your tour. You’ll then walk through the farm on their “seed to cup” tour, learning how a coffee seed is grown, harvested, and roasted into a cup of perfection.

Once the tour is finished, you’ll head to outdoor dining tables for a healthy breakfast and coffee tasting. Water and coffee are included but you’re welcome to kick up the experience even more by bringing your beverages (mimosas, anyone?).

There’s so much more to do in Upcountry. Check out our list of 15 amazing things to do in upcountry Maui.

2. O’o Farm Lunch Tour

O’o Farm offers a second, longer tour that focuses on the produce grown on the farm. You’ll start the tour with a walk through the property, learning about the different produce grown on-site. You’ll then sit down for a multi-course gourmet lunch prepared by a chef.

The leisurely lunch is truly special. Between each course, the chef comes out to discuss what produce is being used to prepare each dish. And just like the coffee tour, you’re welcome to bring your beverages, like a bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal.

3. Ono Organic Farms

A family-run tropical fruit and coffee farm, Ono Organic Farms in Hana offers daily tours. And this isn’t just a farm — this 50-acre farm is one of the largest tropical fruit farms in Hawaii. All of their produce is hand-picked and you’ll see it sold at various places around Maui.

On the tour, you’ll spend 90 minutes driving through the property stopping to learn about and sample the different fruits being grown. These are tropical and some exotic fruits, so there’s a good chance you’ll be sampling at least a few types of fruit you’ve never tried before.

4. Maui Pineapple Tours

There are two pineapple plantations in the state of Hawaii and Maui is lucky enough to be home to one of them. On the tour, you’re guided through the entire operation, from growing pineapples through various stages to harvesting, and finally sorting and shipping.

On the 1.5-hour tour, you’ll learn all the secrets: how to pick the best pineapple at the store, how to cut a perfect pineapple, and even how to use a pineapple top to grow your pineapples at home.

There are plenty of pineapple samples and you’ll even head home with a boxed, airport-ready pineapple.

Check out our review of this tour and the video below with our experience!

This tour makes an appearance as a stop on our Maui itinerary .

5. Maui Dragon Fruit Farm

Take a walking tour of this dragon fruit farm located in the hills above Lahaina. You’ll eat plenty of fruit (yes, a lot of dragon fruit — they have 16 different varieties) as well as other fruits, depending on the season.

The tour lasts 1 hour and at the end you’ll enjoy a box of fruit to take with you and you can also purchase a dragon fruit smoothie (YUM) or add on another activity, like ziplining or aquaball.

6. Punakea Palms (Coconut Farm Tour)

This tour has closed due to the Lahaina fire, but we’re keeping it on the list because we’re hopeful they’ll be back to offering tours! Use the button below to see if the tours are back up and running.

Ever wondered how a coconut tree produces coconuts that we then use the water, milk, and meat from? The Punakea Palms tour walks you through the entire process of this culturally important fruit.

From a coconut tree growing out of a coconut (they don’t need to be planted in the ground right away…crazy!), to finally making coconut milk. Also located just above Lahaina, this is an easy tour to add onto a day of sightseeing. You’ll sample coconut water through various stages and head home with some freshly made coconut milk.

7. Ku’ia Estate Chocolate

From farm to bar, take a tour that teaches you how chocolate is grown, farmed, and made into a delicious piece of food. The experience at Ku’ia is unique. You can start with a tour of their 20 acre farm, sampling cacao seeds directly from the tree. And you can visit their factory to do a full chocolate tasting, sampling different flavors and chocolate produced on Maui.

Ku’ia Estate Chocolate offers two guided tours from their farm and factory in Lahaina. One tour includes a farm tour and a tasting and the other is a tasting tour (9 varieties!). Learn more and book the tours below.

We enjoyed a sneak peek of the farm tour as well as a full chocolate tasting, which you can watch in the video below:

8. Maui Nui Thai

We found this farm stand and tour by happy accident. We had heard whispers of the best Thai food truck in upcountry and we were so thrilled when we found ourselves there for lunch.

But what we didn’t know before visiting was that it’s not just a food truck — it’s a farm. Behind the food truck is a 40 acre farm, where the ingredients used in the truck are sourced from. They also offer farmers market days and farm tours.

9. Kumu Farms and Maui Tropical Plantation

You don’t have to head up to Upcountry to enjoy a farm tour. Located in central Maui, Maui Tropical Plantation offers farm tours via a tram. This 45-minute tour takes you around the property where you can get a glimpse of different tropical plants and why they are culturally significant. They also make a stop to teach you about coconuts.

Once the farm tram tour is over, you can head into the marketplace to purchase produce grown by Kumu Farms. They also offer coffee drinks from the local Oma Coffee Roasters and produce from local makers around the island.

We enjoyed the farm tour but my favorite part was exploring the Kumu Farm shop and stocking up on the local goods.

10. Kula Country Farms

Visit pretty much any grocery store on Maui and you’ll find strawberries from Kula Country Farms. This upcountry farm and store are famous for their strawberry picking (February – June) as well as their fall pumpkin patch. They are located on the way up to Haleakala and make a perfect stop to stretch your legs before continuing your journey.

11. Maui Tea Farm

Located on the beautiful slopes of Haleakala (near Kula in Upcountry Maui), enjoy a scenic tour of Hawaii’s premier loose leaf tea farm. Their tea plants grow alongside native Hawaiian koa, ’ōhi’a, and māmane trees, as well as among coffee, citrus, olive and other fruit tress, flowers, and exotic botanicals.

They also specialize in the growing and processing of the unique, native Hawaiian herbal tisane known as māmaki (a plant in the nettle family with healing properties).

Travel up to 4,100 feet to enjoy this Maui farm tour. They offer two tours a day (10:00 am and 1:00 pm).

12. La Kahea Community Farm’s Farm-to-Taco Cooking Class

This community-led Maui farm offers two tours and they are conveniently located in Maui’s Central Valley. The regenerative farmer on Maui has a mission to care for the land, promote food security, and feed people healthy food. We can all get behind that!

LaKahea Maui Farm Tours

They offer two tours:

  • Taste of Hawaii: A Maui Farm Tour – indulge in fresh fruit, sip ice-cold sugar cane juice, eat delicious rare treats, and take home a gift you can’t get anywhere else!
  • Farm-to-Taco: A Farm Table Cooking Class – learn how to craft tortillas from scratch, harvest farm-fresh taco ingredients, and whip up banana “ice cream”.

Did you know we have a full Maui travel guide dedicated to helping you plan your entire vacation ? Get the best recommendations on where to stay, where to eat, what to do, and when to visit.

13. Maui Macadamia Tours

We brag to all our friends about this tour because we were the first people to go on it! The owner, John, took us on an exclusive tour of his macadamia nut plantation a few years ago. See the video to learn more as this tour is so much more than picking mac nuts and processing them. John runs a lot on the farm that supports the Maui community.

They offer a macadamia nut walking tour and a farm-to-table lunch tour.

They also have Ulu Ulu Cafe (farm-to-table food truck) which we highlight as part of our North Maui day in our Maui Wayfinder Itinerary .

14. Maui Tea Farm

If you’re craving a change of pace and something different from anything else you’ve done during your Maui trip, this tea tour deserves your attention. Whether you’re a natural born tea lover or you’re curious about the process, they’re sure to capture your interest.

Head out with a small group of up to 10 guests for a 1 hour walking tour of the farm followed by a tasting of a couple of their teas. Children of all ages are welcome and kids under 5 join for free!

I hope you get to visit Maui during the humpback whale migration (December to March). It’s my favorite time to be in Hawaii and Maui is the best island for whale watching ! Check out our full guide to whale watching on Maui and book one of the best whale watching tours .

15. Maui Bees

When our three-year-old son started asking us detailed questions about how bees make honey, we knew it was time for a visit to Maui Bees. Located on the sunny slope of Haleakala, Maui Bees offers farm tours, a delicious cafe (using produce grown on-site or locally), and a private dinner experience.

You can visit the bee museum to watch bees flying into and out of a hive, walk the farm to understand how regenerative agriculture is improving the land and the food we eat, and see how the honey gets from hive to jar.

We sampled the honey and took jars of both the winter and summer varieties home with us, which our son now eats by the spoonful.

16. Surfing Goat Dairy

Another great stop for adults and kids is Surfing Goat Dairy. Walk the farm to learn about, pet, and feed the friendly goats and then hear about the process of how cheese is made.

It’s an interactive and short tour where you’ll have fun feeding the goats and watching baby goats play. Then treat yourself to a sampling of their cheeses while you sit out on the farm and relax. They have tour options ranging from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.

17. Maui Animal Farm

This is a fun activity for the kids. A visit to Maui Animal Farm will have them walking through and interacting with a number of different fun farm animals on the petting zoo tour.

The tour starts out with a visit with some smaller animals — birds and bunnies. Then it moves onto some of the larger farm animals that you get to feed and learn about: pigs, goats, horses, tortoises, and more.

Alcoholic Beverage Farm Tours

Farm tours aren’t just reserved for animals and produce. These two farm tours offer locally crafted beverages and make for a fun stop or day out.

Maui Farm Tour Ocean Vodka Distillery

18. Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery

Right near Surfing Goat Dairy is an organic farm and vodka distillery. They offer 35 minute distillery tasting tours, which include learning about sugar cane and the process of producing their vodka.

While this isn’t a normal farm tour, you can enjoy some of their produce grown on-site by visiting the farm cafe. Here you’ll have a selection of pizzas and salads to enjoy, with as many of the ingredients as possible sourced from their farm or locally.

And possibly the best part? The view. Enjoy a sweeping view of central Maui and see the ocean on both sides. There is a large lawn for young ones to enjoy and plenty of chairs and picnic tables available to sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful view.

19. Maui Wine

Yes, there is a winery here on Maui. And yes, it is just as beautiful as you would expect. Located in Ulupalakua in upcountry, you’ll stop at a winery after an absolutely beautiful drive to get there.

You’ll visit the winery with large gardens and beautiful views. And you can sample their wines, including their famous pineapple wine, made with Maui Gold Pineapples. The atmosphere is laid back — exactly what you would expect from a winery on Maui. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

Farm-to-Table Restaurants on Maui

If you can’t make it to a farm tour or you want to enjoy locally-grown produce more than once on your vacation, these restaurants offer a farm-to-table menu that highlights locally-grown food and supports local farmers.

1. Merriman’s

This famous Hawaii restaurant was a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement. At least 90% of the ingredients are locally grown or caught using sustainable methods. On Maui the Merriman’s restaurant is located in Kapalua, but there are other locations on Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu.

2. Hali’imaile General Store

The flagship restaurant from Chef Bev Gannon, this restaurant is located across from Maui Pineapple, making it a perfect stop for a farm-to-table meal after your pineapple farm tour. Open for over 30 years, its location in a historic building gives it charm and the fresh menu makes it a repeat destination for locals and visitors alike.

3. Ulupalakua Ranch

This charming general store serves delicious burgers with meat sourced from their ranch. They’re also working to locally source as much of their produce as possible from local farms. It’s a perfect stop across the street from Maui Wine.

4. Fork & Salad

Striving to use as many locally sourced, organic ingredients as possible, this casual salad spot is fast, well-priced, and delicious. With two locations in Kahului and Kihei, you’ll probably pass by a Fork & Salad location during your trip. Our favorite is to place an order online when we land on Maui and pick it up as we leave the airport. A delicious way to come home!

5. The Market Maui

A great deli and market, this is a place to stop for sandwiches, salads, and coffee. Their ingredients are locally sourced, and include meats, cheeses, and produce. They also serve food from The Market Maui on one of our favorite snorkeling tours. We love the Market Maui !

A herd of goats standing on a farm gate at Haleakala Creamery in Kula, Maui

Craving something sweet during your Maui vacation? You can find the creamy goodness of Haleakala Creamery’s farm-to-spoon caramel at shops all around the island. Or you can go directly to the source and tour Maui’s hidden gem of a dairy goat farm .

Located in the heart of Maui’s upcountry, this family-owned micro farm and kitchen creamery offers weekly tours that let you see where the magic happens.

Whether you’re a fan of farm life or simply a fan of their tasty treats, we recommend the tour at Haleakala Creamery as a must-do for anyone interested in local agriculture on Maui. It’s also a great chance to support a local, family-owned business on the island. And the goats are pretty adorable, too.

Tour details (2023)

  • Generous samples
  • Small group with a maximum of 12 people

  • We missed a turn while driving there, so give yourself a little extra time to navigate the rural roads

Goats stand on a farm gate, anticipating treats

About Haleakala Creamery

Located on 5 acres in Upcountry’s Kula, Haleakala Creamery maintains a small herd of around 25 dairy goats that are treated to one of the most breathtaking views on the island. The farm sits on the slopes of Haleakala with a stunning view that stretches all the way to the sea.

A metal raven decoration on the farm fencing at Haleakala Creamery in Kula Maui

But what really sets family-owned Haleakala Creamery apart are their specialty products. The farm concocts small batches of goat milk caramel sauces and “goatlato” ice cream made from goat milk instead of cow’s milk. They also make a few other treats such as Chevre and skyr yogurt. These are all crafted onsite in a commercial kitchen that the owners built right on the property.

While on the farm tour, not only do you get to see the goats and the beautiful view, but you also get to taste the fruits of the farm’s labor. You can sample their delicious creations and even bring some home with you as a tasty souvenir.

Our experience at Haleakala Creamery’s Farm to Spoon Tour

A woman holds a goat kid in her arms at Haleakala Creamery

First impressions

The first thing I noticed when I stepped out of the car was the absolutely epic view that the farm had. From the property’s elevation, I was able to see all the way to the ocean.

Our small group of four walked over to a tent and picnic benches next to the creamery building. We were greeted by Haleakala Creamery’s owner, Rebecca Woodburn-Rist. She also introduced us to the farm dog, Fletcher. He sat tethered nearby to avoid unleashing his overexcitable nature on the farm guests. I couldn’t resist walking over to give him some attention. And I wasn’t the only one.

A man pets the farm dog at Haleakala Creamery in Kula, Maui

Rebecca gave us background on the farm itself, how they got started, and how they run operations from their five-acre farm.

A group of five people under a tent at Haleakala Creamery, looking at tour guide Rebecca

One impressive detail: she collaborated with her neighbors to allow her herd to graze on their properties. The neighbors get free goat lawn mowing without the expense or hassle of actually owning goats while the goats get fresh feed. Win win.

The goatlato

Before we made our way around the farm, Rebecca passed out small servings of their famous goatlato with a generous dollop of caramel. It was smooth and creamy in my mouth, with just the right amount of sweetness. And a welcome cold treat under the island sun.

A hand holds a sample of Haleakala Creamery's goatlato with caramel sauce

The dairy goats

After the farm talk, Rebecca led our group a few hundred feet to the other opposite side of the creamery building, past the parking lot and driveway. That’s where the goat herd found us.

Three goats standing on a metal gate, heads reaching toward a woman holding a paper bag of treats

Rebecca passed out brown paper sacks of goat treats (tortilla chips), which the goats greedily nibbled and licked out of our hands. We spent around 15 minutes feeding and mingling with the caprine herd before walking along the fence to tour the rest of the little farm.

I can’t say whether every tour gets a chance to meet with baby goats on this tour, but we were lucky enough to meet with a few goat kids during our June visit to Haleakala Creamery. They were sweet and adorable.

Two goat kids stand in front of the adult herd at Haleakala Creamery in Kula, Maui

Goat milking demonstration

After our encounter with the goat kids, Rebecca led us to the farm’s milking station. The area lies adjacent to the creamery kitchen. Rebecca wrangled one of the goats away from the herd to give us a milking demonstration and talk more about their process on the farm. Then she gave each of us the opportunity to try our goat milking skills.

A farm dog at Haleakala Creamery sits and watches his owner milking a goat as a small tour group looks on

Kitchen tour

One of the most unique parts of this farm tour was that we were able to walk through the creamery kitchen itself and see the production process in person.

Three women standing in the commercial kitchen at Haleakala Creamery as one woman demonstrates at a mixing bowl

More tasty treats

After we toured the kitchen, we exited and were back where we started — at the picnic tables and tent. Rebecca then offered us more delicious samples from the farm. This time we sampled different cheeses and skyr yogurt.

Before we left Haleakala Creamery, we had the opportunity to buy their caramel sauce and goat milk soap, all made from goats we had just met that day. Farm to spoon, indeed.

How to reserve a farm tour at Haleakala Creamery

Head to the Haleakala Creamery website and book their Farm to Spoon Creamery Tour .

Once booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email, along with instructions on how to reach the farm.

Getting to Haleakala Creamery

Parking sign at Haleakala Creamery with a directional arrow

*Keep in mind that the farm is only open to the public during scheduled tours.*

From Kahului, take Haleakala Highway (HI-37) toward Upcountry Maui. (You’ll be heading toward the center of the island, away from shore.) Make a right turn onto Omaopio Road. Follow the paved road through the rural residential neighborhood until you reach Piliwale Road. Turn onto Hoomaikai Place until you reach the gate to a private road. Before your tour, you’ll receive additional instructions (via email) on how to gain access to the farm.

Tips before you take the Haleakala Creamery tour

A man stands in front of a farm fence at Haleakala Creamery as goats behind the fence reach toward his hand

These are some things you should know before you book your farm tour:

  • Tours run every Friday and must be booked in advance
  • The farm is in a rural neighborhood, so please respect the neighbors by driving within the speed limit
  • Bring a hat — There isn’t much shade while walking the grounds, and it can get sunny and hot on this Upcountry slope
  • We wore sandals on our tour (I live on a small farm at home, so I’m accustomed to uneven ground and goats stepping on my toes), but since they’re a working farm, Haleakala Creamery recommends wearing closed toe shoes

Bottom line

If you’re considering a farm tour on Maui, we highly recommend checking out Haleakala Creamery. Value-wise, it’s more than worth it.

We enjoyed the personal feel of having the farm owner guide us around the property, answering questions and giving her personal take on what it’s like to farm on Maui. Because of the farm’s smaller size, it was a more intimate and personalized experience.

Discover the delicious taste of all-natural goat cheese when you make a trip to Surfing Goat Dairy. Located in Kula, HI, this family-owned goat farm has sold award-winning cheeses, truffles, soaps, and more since 1999. You can even take a tour of their property for an inside look at their cheese-making process and personal interaction with their friendly goats. This family is dedicated to producing food that's wholesome and ethically sourced. Theirs is the only farm in Hawaii that's certified humane, a designation signifying that they provide safe, healthy care for their animals. Over the years, their staff has developed their own cheese recipes made with local ingredients like apple bananas and Haden mangoes. A tour at Surfing Goat Dairy gives you a hands-on experience unlike any other. Their Grand Dairy Tour teaches you how to care for goats and reveals the secrets of their cheese-making process. If you don't have hours to spend at this goat farm, take the Daily Casual Tour, a 30-minute walkthrough that provides a glimpse at their dairy operations and still lets you pet goats and sample cheeses. On the Evening Chore & Milking Tour, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day workings of the farm and even learn how to milk a goat on your own! With over 30 types of cheeses, 50 types of chocolate truffles, and 20 types of soap, this goat farm offers plenty of luxurious items for you to take home... …

We very much enjoyed our Daily Casual Tour of Surfing Goat Dairy, learned a lot and met the Mama and baby goats. Cheese and Truffle tasting were an extra added bonus. One piece of feedback for improvement. Our guide spoke way too fast. It made the experience feel rushed and tightly scripted. Slow down and enunciate...so visitors can appreciate what you are looking to communicate.

My first and foremost advisory is that this location is expensive. Tours run $38 per adult and $30 per child. My family and I arrived too late for the tour, as we were just driving around, so we opted for only the cheese tasting. For $24 you get to sample 6 different types of cheeses-all of which are delicious. Every cheese was unique and flavorful. However, the crackers that accompanied the platter were low quality at best, which definitely compromised the overall experience. As this place is on an actual farm, my family and I also got to pet some goats for free. This was definitely a nice addition to our experience. I do think this farm is worth the visit, but I don't know that it is worth a revisit.

A bit of a drive from Ka'anapali, but so worth it! The tour is informative and quick with a good amount of time with the goats. I liked feeding the goats and learning about the processes. The site is the actual farm which was cool. There is a small covered spot for resting and taking in the scene, along with a small gift shop. Everyone that works there were very kind and seemed excited to answer questions and talk. Im not a big talker but I really enjoyed my conversations. Recommend staying afterwards to try the cheese plates and chocolates. They're all so good! I bought two chocolate boxes to take home. You can curate your own box or choose the pre packed boxes which are frozen chocolates to make traveling easier. This was a highlight to our Maui vacation. So glad we did this. MYB

A real working goat farm! A few different types of tours you can choose from. Tours are 30-45 minutes and are very informative. It was alot of fun feeding the goats. If you go at the right time of year baby goats (kids) will be there too.

Pretty property with a bunch of cute goats! We drove up from wailea for some cheese tasting and were not disappointed. The tastings include 6 cheeses: all fresh, aged or a combo (3 & 3). We opted for the combo tasting and everything was delicious! All of them were mild and refreshing. The fresh cheeses are different flavors of chèvre. One aged cheese was a goat feta & the other two were chèvre balls aged in olive oil and herbs. Seemed like the cheeses were portioned out in advance so service was very quick. We were in and out within 30 mins.

This was our 2nd visit to Surfing Goat Dairy- the first under the new owners. All of the new pen improvements and the new cafe/store -opening in October- are great! We took the new "golden girls" tour, really enjoyed it and appreciated being able to feed, pet and brush these retiring ladies while we learned their story. Our guide Shannon was an excellent and knowledgeable host! All the staff were friendly and helpful, and the truffles were delicious!

Each cheese is bursting with flavor, showcasing the quality and freshness of their dairy products. The Charcuterie plate complements the cheese perfectly, providing a satisfying balance of flavors and textures. The experience was very short. We fed some Goats and yearlings then tasted a cheese and tried a truffle. We also pre-paid for our food but didn't receive it until everyone else that bought theirs got theirs. Seemed strange and like a penalty. Where's the benefit in pre-ordering? The guide was friendly, but didn't leave feeling like it was worth the cost. Their Internet went out so everyone without cash had to leave their credit card information for charges at a later date. Definitely some opportunity to make it a more robust tour and seamless service experience.

You should go here on your visit to Maui! We had every intent on seeing more of Maui on our last visit, especially the locally-owned ones. I guess I should preface my first statement. You should like animals. If you do, you should go here. Reservations are helpful, and some signup for the times where they can watch the goats getting milked. You can also sign up for a cheese tasting. The lilikoi cheesecake wuz da bes. This was a fun trip. If you're looking for a little excursion, I would add this to your list.

We love Surfing Goat Dairy! Came here in 2010 and now with two kids in tow (12 and 6 years) to do the evening chores and goat milking tour. We got to walk around, feed some goats, milk some goats, and learn about the mechanical milking process. We bought the fresh goat milk cheese flight and had some goat cheese truffles as well. It was an awesome experience... highly recommend!
