Daryl Hall Announces Spring 2022 U.S. Tour With Todd Rundgren

Daryl Hall has announced a U.S. tour in support of an upcoming two-disc solo retrospective, which comes out April 1. He'll be joined by Todd Rundgren .

BeforeAfter spans all five of Hall’s solo albums, from 1980’s Sacred Songs to 2011’s Laughing Down Crying , along with previously unreleased recordings from his Live From Daryl’s House web and TV series. Those live updates include performances with Rundgren and  Eurythmics ’ Dave Stewart .

Hall and Rundgren hit the road on April 1 in Chicago and play through April 16 in National Harbor, Md. You can see the full list of tour dates and the  BeforeAfter  track listing below. Tickets go on sale beginning Friday at 10 a.m. local time via LiveNation.com.

Hall also released live duet update of Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends," which you can listen to below. BeforeAfter is available for pre-order now .

Rundgren and Hall’s professional relationship dates back nearly 50 years. Rundgren produced Daryl Hall and John Oates ’ third album, 1974’s War Babies , and he and several members of his band Utopia performed on the LP. War Babies  abandoned the blue-eyed soul of Hall & Oates’ first two albums in lieu of a more keyboard-heavy hard rock sound, though the duo would return to their roots on their 1975 self-titled album, which spawned the Top 10 hit “Sara Smile.”

Hall & Oates recently wrapped a hefty U.S. tour. Despite confirming to UCR in April 2020 that a new Hall & Oates LP was "moving along," Hall is now uncertain whether the duo will release a new album anytime soon.

"Things have changed," he told  Billboard last June. "I'm really not sure what's going to happen. I don't know if I'm gonna do a solo record next, or do a [Hall & Oates] record. I don't actually know.”

Daryl Hall Announces First Solo Tour in a Decade Supporting Retrospective Album

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

For the first time in a decade, Daryl Hall is plotting a tour all on his own. The brief, eight-date trek will kick off on April 1 in support of his first solo career retrospective album BeforeAfter , set for release on the same day.

Alongside special guest Todd Rundgren , Hall will make stops at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the MET Philadelphia, and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, in addition to shows in Georgia, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio, and Maryland. Tickets for the tour will be available starting Friday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. local time. Sales for Carnegie Hall will be delayed an hour to begin at 11 a.m. ET.

The tour setlist will be stacked with cuts from Hall’s five solo records, which make up the entirety of BeforeAfter . The 30-track collection was selected and arranged by the pop singer and songwriter himself. The two-disc tracklist spans three decades with releases from 1980, when he made his solo debut with the Robert Fripp-produced Sacred Songs , to 2011 when Laughing Down Crying arrived following the death of its co-producer T-Bone Wolk.

BeforeAfter will also feature six newly released live performances from the 2007 series Live From Daryl’s House with guest appearances from Rundgren, Stewart, and Monte Montgomery.

In a statement, Hall shared: “I picked this collection of songs from my solo albums because I feel they encapsulate certain periods of my career. It also shows the diversity of working with collaborators like Robert Fripp or Dave Stewart. And, having some tracks from LFDH on it, really makes the compilation complete.”

SECOND LEG LAUNCHES MAY 12; TICKETS ON SALE STARTING MARCH 18 AT 10AM LOCAL TIME AT LIVENATION.COM

First-ever daryl hall solo retrospective beforeafter out april 1 via legacy recordings.

Today, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall, has announced the expansion of his first solo tour in a decade. The second leg of the tour will follow previously announced dates playing historic venues such as NYC’s Carnegie Hall and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, plus the April 1 release of BeforeAfter (Legacy Recordings), Hall’s first-ever solo retrospective. As with the tour’s first leg, Todd Rundgren will be a special guest on all newly announced dates. Tickets for the second leg of the tour go on sale starting Friday, March 18 at 10AM local time at livenation.com .

Compiled and sequenced by Hall, BeforeAfter features thirty tracks spanning all five of his solo albums, from 1980’s Robert Fripp-produced Sacred Songs through 2011’s Laughing Down Crying , co-produced with longtime Hall compatriot T-Bone Wolk, who sadly passed before the album was released. Additionally, the collection features six never-released performances from the pathbreaking web and television series Live From Daryl’s House , which Hall launched in 2007 with the then-novel idea of “playing with my friends and putting it up on the internet.” One of those performances includes the recently shared recording of the Eurythmics classic “Here Comes The Rain Again,” performed with that song’s co-writer Dave Stewart. Other guests on the Live From Daryl’s House tracks include Rundgren, Monte Montgomery and more.  Taken as a whole, BeforeAfter draws unexpected and satisfying connections between the esoteric and accessible sides of Daryl Hall’s creativity.

Daryl Hall is a modern-day renaissance man, an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the star of his very own award-winning web series, Live from Daryl’s House, as well as a successful venue owner with “Daryl’s House,” a restored venue and live music space in Pawling, N.Y.

The Philadelphia soul man is still achieving career milestones more than four decades later, continuing to perform with his band to sold out venues everywhere.

It’s been quite a decade for Hall, including the opening of “Daryl’s House,” a combination world-class restaurant and performance venue, which he kicked off on October 31, 2014. The popular venue also serves as home base for his multi award-winning Live from Daryl’s House. The show, which began as a “light bulb” moment for Hall when he launched it in 2007 as a free webcast, has set the standard for artist-initiated projects. The groundbreaking series provides a mix of legends and the next generation of superstars. “Live From Daryl’s House” streams on Daryl Hall’s YouTube channel.

Previous episodes of Live From Daryl’s House have featured a diverse mix of veteran and new performers from rock, soul, country and R&B including rock legends Sammy Hagar, Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick, Tommy Shaw, Kenny Loggins, Todd Rundgren, Nick Lowe, Dave Stewart and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top; soul and R&B artists The O’Jays, Aaron Neville, Aloe Blacc, Kandace Springs, Elle King, Wyclef Jean, Smokey Robinson, Cee Lo Green, Booker T & The MGs, and Sharon Jones; big-league singer/songwriters such as Ben Folds, Rob Thomas, Jason Mraz, Gavin DeGraw, Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump; country artists such as Shelby Lynne; and has helped break new acts like Fitz & The Tantrums, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Neon Trees, Johnnyswim, Parachute and Anderson East. The latest episodes of the show feature Squeeze’s Glenn Tilbrook, Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Andy Grammer, Lisa Loeb, Robert Fripp, and Howard Jones.

Daryl Hall has come a long way, and he’s still got plenty of mileage left in a career that’s taken him from the streets of Philadelphia to the halls of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The best is yet to come.

One half of the widely successful folk-rock duo, Hall & Oates, Daryl Hall has forged a successful career in his own right and has recently found huge popularity with his monthly Web Television series, "Live From Daryl's House."

Hall first met Oates whilst studying at Temple University in their native Philadelphia, US. After a brief period of separation, during which Hall played with rock band Gulliver, Oates reunited with Hall in 1972, after which they quickly established themselves in the world of music.Through their manager Tommy Mottola, the pair signed with Atlantic Records to release their first recordings, "Whole Oates" and "War Babies."

It was after moving to New York, US in 1976, changing to RCA Records, that the pair were to create a breakthrough hit, the Top Ten single, "Sara Smile." "Rich Girl" followed, helping to bolster the popularity of their album, "Bigger Than the Both of Us." Streamlining their sound to more straight-up rock, they continued to release quality records into the 80s, finding double-Platinum success with "H2O." The 1984 album, "Big Bam Boom" sold over two million copies and featured four hit singles, proving Hall & Oates had the songwriting credentials for the band's longevity. They became one of the most successful artists of their era, topping the charts more times than the Everly Brothers, yet it was not to last, as the pair disbanded to pursue solo careers.

Hall released a string of albums, "3 Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" (1986), "Soul Alone" (1993) and "Can't Stop Dreaming" (1999), although they failed to live up to the heights of success that the duo had mustered previously. The pair reunited at periods during the 90s and 2000s, recording a number of albums, with 1997's "Marigold Sky" proving to be their most successful. In 2004, his songwriting process was recognized, after being inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Hall began a monthly web show, "Live From Daryl's House," that featured Hall and his band collaborating with a host of eclectic performers, such as Smokey Robinson, Todd Rundgren, Plain White T's and Chromeo. The success of the series reinvigorated Hall, who recorded "Laughing Down Crying," his first solo venture in 14 years, released in 2011. The euphoria of regaining success was short-lived, however, after the death of his longtime producer, T-Bone Wolk, before the album's completion.

Live reviews

With crazily catchy hits like ‘Maneater’, ‘Private Eyes’ and ‘Rich Girl’ all a part of Daryl Hall’s repertoire, it’s kind of a no-brainer that a Hall & Oates concert would be out-of-this world awesome. Despite being in their sixties, the duo absolutely bring it when they perform live. Their energy is infectious and it’s no wonder that every time I’ve seen them perform, I’ve woken up totally exhausted the next day. A Hall & Oates gig is an all-singing, all-dancing affair just as you might expect. It’s amazing how cool Daryl Hall still looks up on stage with his flowing blonde locks and wraparound shades; if I manage even a fraction of his coolness in my sixties I’ll be happy. Standing in the crowd and looking up at Daryl as he opens a gig, you just know that when the lights go down and his band starts to play, that this man is one hundred percent at home up on stage. Whether he’s touring his solo work, or performing his power-pop-rock hits alongside John Oates, you’re guaranteed to have a night you won’t forget. I’m a firm believe that there is a Hall & Oates song appropriate for every life event, and, as cliché as this might be, the song that most accurately reflects how it feels to catch a Daryl Hall concert is obviously ‘You Make My Dreams’. Go see him live. Seriously.

Although Daryl Hall is consistently committed to the duo Hall & Oates, he does occasionally take to the road solo to air some of his own releases as well as covers from his infamous band. Considered to be one of the most gifted songwriters of the 20th century, it seemed pretty natural for Daryl to have a side project throughout the career and he collaborated often with esteemed producer Robert Fripp.

Although Hall & Oates have a larger pull for the fanbase, the venue is still packed out tonight for Daryl's solo headline show and as he steps onto the stage the whole audience cheer largely. He hand selects his own personal favourite work from the discography including the sincere 'Eyes for You (Ain't No Doubt About It)' along with the recognisable Hall & Oates tracks such as 'Private Eyes' and 'Man-eater'. The audience watches on in quiet anticipation as Hall keeps the show pacy before culminating in 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)' which has the whole room singing. He has saved two gems for the encore of 'Rich Girl' and 'You Make My Dreams' before he exits to even larger applause than when he appears.

Daryl Hall is what dreams are made of for Music. Whomever he sings with is the icing on the cake. He just makes music better, performers better, musicians better. I followed his career and most concerts where I could attend. My family became instant big fans. Was also there the night of the Grand Opening Of Daryls House in New York with John Oates. Also saw him many times in New York and Pa.

Daryl when you come to Orlando this summer have Rumer and Todd Rundgren with you also. Let me know. and Thank you for the Music and lyrics. Teresa Asaro

Daryl Hall’s 2022 Solo Tour Setlist

' src=

Hall & Oates fans – don’t you worry. Just because John Oates won’t be on stage at The Mahaffey in St. Pete, you’ll still get to sing along with lots of the group’s classics. Todd Rundgren opens the show August 3. Here are the songs Daryl has been doing on his solo tour so far. He might switch things up for the St. Petersburg show, but most likely you’ll hear these songs in this order.

One of those forgotten 80s gems. This Daryl Hall solo hit will bring the energy to start the show.

It's Uncanny

Going back to the 70s for this underrated and often forgotten Hall & Oates gem.

Problem With You

This one’s from Daryl’s “ Laughing Down Crying” album he put out in 2011.

I'm in a Philly Mood

Daryl says he wrote this as a love song to the city of Brotherly Love.

From Daryl’s 1996 album Can’t Stop Dreaming.

Sacred Songs

The title track to Daryl’s first solo album. It was recorded in 1977 but it didn’t get released until three years later. The record label was said to not think the songs on the album had any chance of being commercial hits. They might have been right. None of the songs from the album hit the charts.

Babs and Babs

Another one from Sacred Songs, you might have seen Daryl do this one with with Guster or Ben Folds on Live From Daryl’s House.

Here Comes The Rain Again

Not too many covers on this setlist.  But everyone knows this Eurythmics 80s classic.  It’ll be fun to hear Daryl’s take on it.

The group’s first big Top 40 hit – it got up to #4 in 1975.  The song is about Daryl’s girlfriend at the time who was a flight attendant.

I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)

This one was a #1 for 10 weeks until it was finally knocked out of the top spot by Olivia Newton-John’s hit “Physical.”  Don’t leave your seat … there are still 4 more songs to come in the encore.

Wait For Me

Hope you did wait for him. The encore begins with a Hall & Oates song from 1979 from “No Brain No Pain.”

Can We Still Be Friends

Todd Rundgren joins Daryl on stage during the encore and they do this song Todd released in 1978 about trying to make a relationship work.

Expressway to Your Heart

A cover of the hit by The Soul Survivors from 1967. There have been lots of covers of this one over the years by everyone from Jerry Garcia to Bruce Springsteen.

You Make My Dreams

The big finale.  This one’s been in commercials for everything from Dick’s Sporting Goods to KFC. The Toronto Maple Leafs even play it when they score a goal at home games.

Daryl Hall digs into his bag of tricks on first tour without John Oates

Daryl Hall, lead songwriter and vocalist of the legendary soul rock group Hall & Oates, brings his House Band to Cincinnati Sunday, Aug. 7, supporting the new compilation “BeforeAfter” – a retrospective of songs from his five solo studio albums interspersed with cuts from the acclaimed online performance series, “Live From Daryl’s House."

Find a show: Cincinnati's FULL 2022 concert calendar 🎸

I recently spoke with the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer about his writing process, his love-hate relationship with the entertainment industry and about how to avoid burnout while juggling touring, television production and a house-restoration hobby.

Question: You started getting serious about tunes at Temple University as part of the Temptones vocal group and became connected to artists like the Delfonics and the Temptations. What about Philadelphia led you toward soul and R&B?

Answer: I grew up just outside of Philadelphia and I've been singing in front of people since I was about 4 or 5 years old. That whole area is steeped in a certain kind of music. It's what people know as the sound of Philadelphia . It's very vocal and harmony-heavy and uses certain kinds of chords. I was drawn to it because that's what I was hearing around me.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Q: You're known primarily for your vocals, but you're also a multi-instrumentalist. What comes first when you're writing a tune? Do you have a melody in your head or is it plunking around on a keyboard or a guitar that moves you toward a song?

A: It can come in a lot of different ways. More than not, it comes with either a drum groove from a drum machine or in my head, or some kind of a chordal pattern either on a guitar or a keyboard. That's sort of evident in the music. I usually start my songs with the dominant riff in the song, and then it goes from there. I can be inspired many different ways. A lyrical phrase can set it off. Then I just let it develop naturally.

Q: This is your first tour without John Oates, and it's on the heels of the release of "BeforeAfter," which focuses solely on your work without him. You’ve spoken a lot about taking a break from the duo to establish your legacy as a solo artist. But you've always worked with other musicians, whether it's Robert Fripp or your House Band or Todd Rundgren, etc. What do you see as the role of collaboration in your music?

A: It's essential because my style is very collaborative. I write a lot alone, of course, but I like to put myself against and with other people. Somehow it feels like it's more than the sum of its parts. And you're right, I have done this over the years. That's part of what this compilation is all about – to show all the different collaborations I've done outside of what everybody knows about with John Oates. They're all slightly different because of that. What holds it together are my sensibilities and my vocals. That's why I do “Live From Daryl's House.” It's an extension of the same thing – working with other people to see what's going to happen.

Q: Speaking of “Live From Daryl's House,” you get tons of artists to join you on there. How do you pick who to invite over to jam?

A: A lot of times, it comes to scheduling. I don't have any problem getting people to say yes to the show. I never did, even from the very beginning. When I first had the idea of it, one of my first guests was Smokey Robinson . I called him up and I said, “Hey, Smokey, do you want to come to my house in the middle of nowhere?” And he said yes. I’ve had no problem with people saying yes, but then they say, “Yes, but I'm on tour. This whole year is booked up and blah, blah, blah.” So that's the biggest challenge.

Q: You've had a lot to say about your dissatisfaction with the music industry in general and your hesitance, for instance, to get “Live From Daryl's” onto network TV. Did your experience with “Daryl’s Restoration Over-Hall” or with cameos in TV shows inform the decision to maintain tighter control over “Live From Daryl's”?

A: My relationship with people who sell the art is always very tenuous. I go in a lot of different directions, and I'm hard to categorize and pin down. For the entertainment business, it's hard to understand exactly where I'm coming from. I've banged heads with record companies from the beginning. Sometimes it all works, but a lot of times it doesn't. My restoration show, that was a real experience in the TV world – with all the restrictions that accompanied it, although I had a great time doing the show. I tend to operate better autonomously without having a whole lot of people looking over my shoulder.

Q: Do you think the internet has changed how you approach the business aspect of the creative industry?

A: The internet allowed the whole thing. “Daryl's House” would not have existed if the internet hadn't been available to do it. I was the first one to do this. The internet, back when I started that show, wasn't really an entertainment vehicle at all. It was for information and association and things like that. There were no podcasts, there was no nothing. So what I did was revolutionary and it could only have happened without any restrictions or discipline. Nobody was saying anything, so we just went for it. That's the strength of the show. It was unfettered.

Q: You've had an extremely busy life and clearly have a strong work ethic. What keeps you going? And what do you do with your free time when you're not making music or touring or restoring houses?

A: I don't have a lot of free time. I'm restoring the house that I live in right now, and that's taken my time up between tours. Then I'm out on the road again. Then we're going to start filming the new episodes from “Live At Daryl's House” in September. And it just goes on and on, so I don't have a lot of downtime.

Q: What keeps you from getting burnt out?

A: I try and change things up. I don't do any one thing to death, and I'm always changing things. I'm always trying new things and creating challenges for myself, and that keeps it interesting and keeps my energy flowing. I just have an active mind and I like to make things happen.

Daryl Hall; Todd Rundgren| Concert Review

Tim G Fenner

It’s not too frequent one can catch not just one, but TWO Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees in quaint Northfield, Ohio, but last night (April 7, 2022), was one of those nights. Headliner Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates fame, inducted 2014) brought along class of 2022 inductee, Todd Rundgren , for a show to remember! The show was the fourth tour stop for the two living legends.

It should be noted that neither NEEDS to play the casino circuit other than out of preference for more intimate venues. Both are capable of selling out larger rooms than the 2200 capacity Center Stage at MGM Northfield Park on their own merits. Needless to say, the combined bill sold out well in advance!

Both hailing from the Philadelphia region, Hall and Rundgren had a different take on their nods to the Rock Hall. Hall accepted his honor with great pride, while Rundgren controversially refused to show at his own induction and told CleveRock in a 2021 interview that his honor meant “nothing” to him, noting, “it’s like a scam trying to keep people interested in the whole thing, by making fans think their vote means something.”

The show was split into separate acts separated by a 20-minute intermission. Rundgren, who is every bit ‘A Wizard, A True Star,’ as suggested by the title of his 1973 solo record, went first, followed by Mr. Hall, whose track record of being one-half of the most commercially successful duo in the history of music speaks for itself. Both stars were backed by Daryl Hall’s amazing band from his show, “Live at Daryl’s House”.  This band, led by the musical director and guitarist Shane Theriot sounded amazing.

Act I, Todd Rundgren

Rundgren opened a non-stop 14-song set, that included some of his greatest music from the first 30 years of his career.  From the 1975 release ‘ Initiation,’ Rundgren started the night with “Real Man.”   He then moved on to hits from ‘ Faithful,’ ‘Something/Anything?’ and, of course, the great hit “ We Gotta Get You a Woman ” from his first solo album, ‘Runt.’

Many more hits from the 1972 double album ‘Something/Anything?’ including one of my favorite all-time songs, “Hello It’s Me,” which was originally played by Nazz , the first band Rundgren played with.  (This song, which is near to Todd’s heart, was re-arranged for the ‘ Something/Anything?’ release.)

daryl hall concert tour 2022

Rundgren went on to play his very popular Motown medley including “ I’m So Proud” and “Ooo Baby Baby”, both covers from the bands The Impressions and The Miracles , respectively. Rundgren pranced about the stage, singing with just a microphone for some of the show, then strapped his “Pearl” guitar (I did not see his green aka “Foamy”) and showed off the awesome guitar work he has become so well known for.  He ended his set with “ The Want of the Nail” from his 1989 ‘Nearly Human’ release.

And, don’t worry, this show was not void of “I Saw the Light,” (although “Bang on the Drum” just wasn’t a fit for this setlist).

Todd Rundgren Setlist MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage, Northfield, OH, USA 2022

Act II, Daryl Hall

Hall kicked off his set with “ Dreamtime” from his second solo album, ‘Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine’ (1986).  He immediately went into a Hall and Oates song from the 1977 album ‘ No Goodbyes’ with “It’s Uncanny.”

Daryl mixed up his setlist, 6 out of 14 tunes being from his work with John Oates; the remainder split between covers and his solo efforts. An early set highlight was “Problem With You” from his 2011 album, ‘Laughing Down Crying .’

The aforementioned shared Philly area ties were discussed by Rundgren and Hall, noting that aided in both artists having some blues roots. This led to Hall playing “ I’m in a Philly Mood” from his 1993 solo effort titled ‘Soul Alone .’

Mixing it up a bit, Hall played a 1977 tune (actually released in 1980 on the first solo album, ‘ Sacred Songs’ ) “ Babs and Babs” that was originally written and performed by both Daryl Hall and Robert Fripp (King Crimson).  This song was a collaboration of Fripp’s Prog sound mixing with Hall’s more pop influence to create something entirely new.  The term “babs and babs, ” as explained by Daryl, means “both sides of the brain.”

daryl hall concert tour 2022

Daryl continued with a few more Hall and Oates songs and an excellent cover of Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again.

Rundgren Joined his friend for an encore, co-singing Hall’s “Wait for Me” and Rundgren’s “ Can We Still be Friends ,” followed by The Soul Survivors’ “Expressway to Your Heart,” and Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams.”

The venue was definitely filled with a crowd of true Rundgren and Hall fans, with several songs being co-sung by the crowd.  All in all, it was a night of great memories and an outstanding musical show that was powered by an amazing band.  The show length was nearly three and a half hours (although it seemed much shorter; time flies when you’re having fun!) It’s been a long long wait to see these two giants perform together, but well worth it!

Survey data: do consumers want gen ai in entertainment content, 'touch' review: a search for a lost love makes for a heartrending romantic affair to remember, popular on variety.

In Costello’s case, his turn at the piano was a short one, unlike Hall’s extended foray at the keys. Normally, EC has Steve Nieve to meet all his keyboard needs. But, eight songs in, he took to the ebony-and-ivories himself to sing and play “A Face in the Crowd,” the title song of a long-in-the-works stage musical, based on the same Budd Schulberg novel that was the basis for the classic 1957 Elia Kazan movie. Costello has often played this number in concert in recent years, but with a mounting of the musical finally set to take place in London this fall, maybe there’s a reason to sing it with some extra urgency. It felt like his voice had been somewhat in warmup mode before then, but Costello belted this one with a clarion quality that made it sound as if he passionately believed the false promises in the lyrics.

Having established that Hall and Costello both have a way with a mid-set wail, what kind of tour partners do they make?

Good ones, from a booking perspective. A Venn diagram would probably show that there aren’t that many music fans that feel equally passionate about both performers, vastly different as the appeal of each is. But most devotees of each artist probably have some kind of affection for, and not much aversion to, the catalogs of the singer that is second fiddle in their minds… so this is effectively nearly doubling up the size of the potential audience without risking very many noticeable late arrivals or early walkouts. So, compliments to the chef, whoever that might be, who thought there’d be a certain complementarity that would work here.

This is not like the previous co-headlining tour Hall did with Todd Rundgren last year, where the latter performer joined him for a significant part of the show after doing the opening set. Nor is it like the Costello/Nick Lowe joint tour of last year, where no duets were guaranteed but you stood about a one-in-five chance of having Lowe stick around long enough to join Elvis for “Peace, Love and Understanding” or “Alison.” The one obvious overlap these two have had in the past was Hall singing the harmony vocal on Costello’s 1984 hit “The Only Flame in Town,” a chemistry one or both of them apparently have zero interest in recreating on the road.

Costello has been adding “The Only Flame in Town” to his set more and more in these shows, though, as a soloist, and it was fortunate for the Greek audience that Tuesday was one of those nights where he saw fit to include it. The original recording from the ‘80s sounds dated and cloying now (truth be told, it was a little dated and cloying the day it came out). But at the heart of it is a brilliant composition that Costello has revived from time to time in concert as a slow, breathy ballad, getting more clearly in touch with the idea that, yep, true to its ironic title, it is a torch song. It’s just as well that he didn’t ask Hall to come out and find his way between those lyrical flares; for this purpose, it’s fine that Costello is the only fireman in town.

For longtime fans who are used to certain hits coming at certain places, Costello is messing with heads a little by putting “Pump It Up” and “Watching the Detectives” right at the top of the show (a lot of folks were probably hearing Davey Faragher’s opening bass riff out in the parking lot). And by moving up “Peace, Love and Understanding” from its traditional finale spot, the shows now end on a balladic note — albeit still a give-the-people-what-they-want note — with “Allison.” Whether or not Costello always maintained the same affection for that last song that everybody else does, he seems to love it a lot more now that he has Charlie Sexton as an auxillary member of the Imposters, since Sexton is able to play the guitar part the intricate way it was performed on the original record. “Allison” might hit differently if he were closing out the night with it, instead of just leading into intermission, but it feels just right as a set-closer on this tour… leaving the audience feeling at intermission like the crowd with the most cake.

Costello gets to go to a lot of extremes in his repertoire on any given night, whether he’s doing a two-and-a-half-hour show on his own or playing for a mere hour-and-20 as a leadup artist here. Hall doesn’t have nearly that range in his catalog — no punky “No Actions” or Bacharach soliloquies here — but he does hit on enough variations of tone and style to make the set feel like it has some dynamics, before he satisfyingly settles into pure soul-man mode. At the Greek, he also eschewed hitting all the Hall and Oates greatest hits — leaving out, for instance, “Rich Girl” — in order to hit upon a few deep cuts and solo tracks. His set struck a finely tuned balance between delivering what most of the audience came for and offering a few surprises for his most faithful fans.

I’d like to say that Hall performed like a man unbound, now that he has declared that is done with Daryl Hall & John Oates as a duo once and for all. But if you follow his recent interviews, Hall kind of makes it sound like he always considered himself essentially a solo artist… if one who was duty-bound to make room for a sidekick to keep the branding alive. In any case, officially being solo once and for all doesn’t mean he’s about to get indulgent and start doing stuff off his ancient cult-favorite Robert Fripp collaboration (though some of us would have jumped up and down if he did). Even with his new solo album, “D” (which he helpfully held up a vinyl copy of), Hall is dedicated to making his current sound part of the H&O continuum.

No one on hand was about to argue with the vintage nature of 11 out of 12 tunes. There was no reason to when Hall has assembled a band that locks so neatly into grooves that turn out to have a lot more to them live than you necessarily remember coming from the radio back in the day. There’s a key link to the past here, besides Hall’s own indelible voice — it’s sax player Charles DeChant, still turning up in the same spots for solos that he did on the recordings of “Maneater” and “I Can’t Go for That.” He turned from sax man to flautist for the extended opening to “Sara Smile,” a long instrumental R&B fanfare so warm and inviting that you wished the song would never stop getting started.

daryl hall concert tour 2022

Where is the intersection between Elvis Costello’s fans and those of Daryl Hall and John Oates? Yes, Costello and Hall duetted once on a song back in 1984 (“The Only Flame in Town”) that gained some traction on MTV but it also featured on a Costello record that the artist himself loathes . Do people who love Costello’s caustic songwriting show up for Hall’s super smooth, blue-eyed soul hits or vice versa? Judging by the attendance at the Troutdale, Oregon tour opener, the crossroads where the musicians’ fans meet is somewhat limited.

Or maybe the poor attendance is the fault of the atmospheric river that settled over the Portland area that evening. This corridor of water vapor, which was reported to be stronger and later in the year than usual, dumped rain down the entire night, putting a literal damper on a concert that kicked off the venue’s summer season. Most of the fans who braved the show dressed in slickers, ponchos and rain jackets. The general admission lawn seemed to be less than a quarter full.

Every venue has its pros and cons, and for people who attend shows at McMenamins Edgefield Concerts on the Lawn, they know that getting out of the parking lot at the end of the night is an ordeal that can take up to an hour. However, after Hall finished the evening with “You Make My Dreams” it took only moments to drive out.

Both musicians, who each played a little over an hour, made comments on the weather but didn’t allow it to ruin their performances. Costello played a set steeped with his older hits but augmented by some newer songs while Hall mainly concentrated on the smash singles that he put out with former partner Oates. For the Hall fan, Costello played enough of his big songs (“Radio Radio,” “Everyday I Write the Book”) while Hall brought out radio mainstays like “Out of Touch” and “Sara Smile” to appeal to the Costello enthusiasts who stuck out the weather and remained for the second set.

Augmented by guitarist Charlie Sexton, Costello and the Imposters played a mainly upbeat set of songs. Most of Costello’s fans stood along the periphery of the general admission section while the folks in the more expensive seated section remained in their chairs during this first portion. Still, old favorites like “Watching the Detectives,” “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” and “Alison” are always fun to hear but the true highlights for fans came with excellent versions of newer songs like “Magnificent Hurt” and “Unwanted Number.” Costello also did an acoustic version of “Only Flame,” which is a rarity in his live show. Though it would have been nice, Hall did not come out and join him.

After a long break, Hall took the stage and played a more relaxed set than Costello’s more frenetic music. Kicking off with “Maneater,” Hall played a few solo selections (“Dreamtime,” “Foolish Pride”) on guitar before switching over to piano for “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” and to reclaim “Everytime You Go Away,” a song he wrote that Paul Young turned into an international hit in 1985. Backed by six musicians, Hall’s set felt slicker than the lean rock ‘n’ roll of Costello, but also presented a more chilled-out vibe for the later portion of the evening. Hall is still slender and spry with his signature well-coiffed hair. And although he can no longer hit the high notes like he once could, the strength of hits kept enthusiastic fans up and dancing even as the rain soaked them. Sadly though, the child who repeatedly shouted for “Private Eyes” throughout the night found his request go unrecognized.

Hopefully Hall and Costello will see a better turnout for later shows on this tour. Perhaps fans don’t want to spring for a full concert ticket and see only an hour or so of their preferred musician. With more pleasant weather, this double bill could be a fun summer evening out. It’s all about finding those fans who loves both “Watching the Detectives” and “Say It Isn’t So.” At the very least, Hall should join Costello on “The Only Flame in Town.” Despite its forgotten status, it was likely the reason this tour exists in the first place.

Went to their show last night. Elvis had more people standing but the 8 minute version of “I can’t go for that” was awesome. Could have gone on for 15 minutes.

Never, ever, go to a concert at Remlinger Farms – parking is free but you pay for it as it takes an hour to get out of the parking area. One road in, one road out. Sucks. I guess it’s best to just stay behind and watch the roadies take down equipment then casually leave.

I’m a big Daryl Hall fan but it pains me to admit that this was perhaps the worst concert I’ve ever been to. The Daryl Hall I saw was a shell of his former self. He didn’t engage with the audience and his voice is completely gone. He talked the lyrics of half his songs and didn’t seem to realize that his voice completely dropped when he turned his head. Notwithstanding the weather, Elvis Costello was decent but Daryl Hall was terrible. Huge disappointment.

I attended the show at The Greek Tuesday. I anticipated a great night with these two icons. Sadly, Both there voices are gone. Elvis was out of time and out of key and sounded like armature karaoke. Hall was a little better but not much. had to let the band finish words and generally not good. Again, Love these guys but i think it’s time to hang it up.

Daryl Hall Talks Solo Project ‘D,’ Dave Stewart & John Oates Split

Hall began work on 'D' some 18 months ago on Harbor Island with co-producer and longtime friend Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.

Daryl Hall

As he prepares to release his new album , D, Daryl Hall is well aware of how long of a gap there’s been — 11 years, in fact, since Laughing Down Crying .

“We took breaks from it and all that,” Hall explained. “I’d go down there; I have a house in the Bahamas and so does Dave, around the corner. It was really just the two of us, with an engineer (Jesse Samier). We pretty much worked in one-month increments; we’d do a month, then I went away — I was on the road for a year — then I’d come back and we’d do another month and then it was just kind of tying things together, which we did fairly recently.

“I think in some respects it was better to take breaks, ’cause every time we’d jump back into it it’d be fresh. It was all very spontaneous, very happy, not a lot of thought, really. It was just ‘Don’t think, just do,’ and ( D ) is what came out of it.”

While Hall, Stewart and Samier played nearly all the instruments on D , they would “just bring somebody in” for other parts, including backing vocalists, while Darrell Freeman was tapped to send synthesizer parts from Atlanta and longtime Hall & Oates saxophonist Charlie DeChant contributed to “Why Do You Want to Do That (To My Head).” Hall says the relaxed island environment gave the songs a particular kind of vibe, easy to hear in the soul-flacked “Too Much Information,” “Can’t Say No to You,” “Walking In Between Raindrops,” “Break It Down to the Real Thing” and “Not the Way I Thought it Was,” the D track most likely to be associated with Hall & Oates.

“The album is a complete thought,” said Hall, “and we organized the songs to go through a journey with it. We hit sort of a bottom place with ‘I’d Rather Be a Fool’ — that song is totally autobiographical — and then start coming back up again to the new, better world. We didn’t write the songs with that in mind, but when we realized what we had we put it together into a story, in a progression.”

The D title, meanwhile, pulls from Hall’s nickname. “My friends call me D, so I said, ‘OK, why not? I’ll call it my nickname.”

For Hall, D also represents something of a new era. While he and John Oates toured together through 2022, their schism as a duo became public in recent years — and particularly last fall, when Hall filed suit against Oates over Oates’ attempt to sell his half of the duo’s joint venture Whole Oates Enterprises to Primary Wave Music without Hall’s consent. Both have said they’re unlikely to ever reunite and are going about their businesses as full-time solo artists.

“John and I did not have a creative relationship for decades; the last song I wrote with John was in 2000 and that was with somebody else,” Hall says. “We toured and we toured and we toured, and it was very restrictive to me, and to John. The real truth of it all is John just said one day he didn’t want to do it anymore. I said ‘OK,’ but the problem is (Oates) didn’t make the parting and breakup easy, and that’s where the difficulties lay and still lay, and that’s all it is.

“I always say I’ve been a solo artist my whole life, I was just working with John, mostly.”

He’s ready to continue on that path, too. With D coming out Hall is already making plans for its follow-up, starting on his next trip to Harbor Island in January. In the meantime he’s happy to be on the road with Costello, for whom he provided a guest vocal on the 1984 single “The Only Flame in Town.”

“I think it’s a great combination,” Hall says. “It’s a lot of good music, a lot of good songs. I met Elvis around the same time as (Stewart), actually — early ’80s or something. We have mutual friends and we’ve traveled in and out of the same circles over the years. He’s a complicated guy musically and personally, but in the most interesting of ways.”

Hall is also continuing to renovate homes — he’s working on one now, in fact — and he’s moving forward with his acclaimed performance series Live From Daryl’s House after re-launching it last year as a web series on YouTube. “We’re talking about, instead of doing whole seasons just maybe doing two (episodes) at a time and putting them out,” Hall says. “So every once in awhile we’ll throw a couple out there; that way it doesn’t take too much time out of other things I’m doing, ’cause it really does take time. So that’s the plan; I don’t know who (the next episodes) will be yet, but it’ll probably be just a couple of new things coming out.”

Daryl Hall "D"

"D," Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall's first new solo album in 11 years, comes out Friday, June 21 (Courtesy United Artists Promotions) United Artists Promotions

  • Gary Graff, special to cleveland.com

Daryl Hall returns to the solo ranks after more than a decade, leading a new music releases lineup that includes Taylor Swift-endorsed Gracie Abrams, Peso Pluma, Kygo, Kehlani, Moneybag Yo, a Tom Petty country tribute and an anniversary celebration of Ed Sheeran’s “x” (all subject to change...

Daryl Hall, “D” (United Artists Productions): It’s been 11 years since Daryl Hall’s last solo album, not counting the 2022 compilation “Before After.” Now that he and John Oates have largely dissolved their partnership he’s back with “D,” a nine-track set co-produced with fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dave Stewart and recorded at the latter’s studio in the Bahamas. Longtime Hall & Oates saxophonist Charlie DeChant, meanwhile, appears on one track on what Hall calls a “very personal” but also “very happy” album.
