St. Ignace, Michigan is an Upper Peninsula city located along the northern end of the Straits of Mackinac, home to a population of more than 2,400 residents. The historic community dates back more than three centuries, connected to the Lower Peninsula via the Mackinac Bridge, which links it to Mackinaw City. Then look no further, this list is full of my favorite fun weekend getaways in Michigan. I was born and raised in the Midwest, and Michigan is one of my favorite Midwestern states to visit.

Michigan has more shoreline than any other state except Alaska which means a lot of beaches. Add to that incredible scenery, amazing architecture, small towns and big cities, there is so much to do, see and visit in this Great Lakes State.

With that in mind, I came up with this list of the 15 best weekend getaways in Michigan!

Sleeping Bear Dunes For Outdoor Adventure

If you are looking for a weekend full of outdoor adventures, then consider heading out to Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a national Lakeshore in Michigan, and one of the best beaches in Michigan .

The beach is miles of white sandy dunes and beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

While exploring, you’ll find miles of hiking trails, a historic Lighthouse and Life Saving Station, and an adorable coastal village.

There is also a Visitors Center that you should check out if you want to learn a little more history about the area.

Depending on what time of year you go, along with hiking, you can also enjoy plenty of watersports.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a great weekend getaway in Michigan if you want to reconnect with the great outdoors.

New Buffalo The Popular Resort Town

New Buffalo is a popular resort town in Michigan that is part of the vacation district known as ‘Harbor Country’.

This charming beach town is nestled on the shores of the majestic Lake Michigan.

If you are looking for a small coastal town to explore, you’ll find there are tons of things to do in New Buffalo .

The town has a casino, a beach park, plenty of unique shops, and more.

If you are interested in sailing, New Buffalo offers sailing tours as well as sailing lessons.

For those who love wine and spirits, New Buffalo has several wineries, distilleries, and breweries.

No matter what you are interested in, New Buffalo is a great place to spend a weekend in Michigan.

Holland For A Charming Coastal Village

Holland Michigan is a quaint Bavarian style coastal village.

The first European immigrants named their town after their home country, and since then it has been a stand out Bavarian city in small town Michigan.

Holland is mostly known for its ‘Big Red Lighthouse’, which is easily one of the coolest Lighthouses in Michigan .

The ‘Big Red Lighthouse’ was built and rebuilt several times and has architectural nods to the country of Holland.

In 1956 the US Coast Guard painted it bright red and catapulted it into becoming one of the most iconic lighthouses in Michigan.

Visitors love spending the weekend in Holland exploring the Bavarian-style village shops and center, and of course, seeing ‘Big Red’.

Holland also hosts a yearly Tulip Festival, which makes for a really fun weekend getaway in Michigan.

The town goes all out in Bavarian style with food stalls, plenty of Bavarian activities, and tours of the large tulip fields.

It is a can’t miss event!

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is one of the best National Parks in Michigan , and for good reason.

Off the coast of mainland Michigan in Lake Superior you’ll find this unique Island.

The island itself is completely secluded and only hosts visitors to the National Park.

While there you can do a number of things.

If you are staying the whole weekend, you can plan a backpacking trip around the island and have some fun camping.

For those who want to explore for a few days, but not necessarily camp, you can find plenty of hotels in Houghton or Copper Harbor.

However, I suggest staying on Isle Royale the whole weekend as the ferry ride from Michigan can take 3 1/2 – 6 hours.

It is definitely worth it to spend the weekend camping.

Visitors to the National Park can also enjoy watersports, guided hikes, and there is a Visitor’s Center.

If you are looking for a rugged adventure weekend, you can’t go wrong exploring Isle Royale National Park.

Mackinac Island Is A Perfect Romantic Getaway

If you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway in Michigan, then look no further.

Mackinac Island is the perfect place for you and your partner to enjoy a weekend together.

The small island is located in Lake Huron and is one of Michigan’s most popular vacation spots.

Mackinac Island is a charming coastal town that is incredibly unique, for several reasons.

The entire island is a National Historic Area and you’ll find plenty of places to tour if you love history.

From beautiful old homes, lighthouses, and military forts, the island has it all.

Another cool thing is that the entire island has zero cars.

To get to the island, you take a ferry.

To get around the island, your options are bicycle, walking, or horse-drawn carriage.

You and your partner can tour the island before heading to a romantic dinner in a horse-drawn carriage.

It doesn’t get more romantic than that, which is why Mackinac Island is the perfect romantic weekend getaway in Michigan.

Ann Arbor Is The Perfect Michigan Getaway

Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and is full of really great ways to spend a weekend.

Art lovers will enjoy spending hours walking through the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

There you can find art pieces from all over the world as well as form different time periods.

If you enjoy science, Ann Arbor has a fantastic Museum of Natural History, as well as a stunning botanical garden, and a Museum of Archeology.

You’ll also find a great selection of breweries, distilleries, and restaurants to sample.

If you are bringing your whole family on your weekend getaway, then the kids will love spending the morning at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.

After a morning spent there, grab a picnic lunch, and then hang out at Gallup Park or the Hudson Mills Metropark.

No matter what interests you, Ann Arbor is sure to have activities you’ll enjoy all weekend long.

Grand Rapids For City Exploration

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan and that means it is bursting with fun activities.

One of visitor’s favorite things to do is explore the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculptural Park .

There are five indoor gardens, several outdoor gardens, and plenty of nature trails.

You’ll also find a sculptural gallery as well as a permanent sculptural exhibit and more.

The Meijer Gardens have become world renowned and are worth a visit.

If you enjoy history, you can spend time touring the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

There you can learn about the United States 38th President.

Grand Rapids is also full of unique shops, restaurants, art galleries, and other museums.

It is a great place to discover more about Michigan and a great weekend getaway in Michigan.

Frankenmuth For Bavarian Adventures

Holland is a fairly well-known Bavarian town in Michigan, but Frankenmuth is the ‘Little Bavaria’ of Michigan.

That’s what makes it one of the best small towns in Michigan to visit if you are looking to step into a Bavarian village.

Now, just because it’s a small town, doesn’t mean there isn’t much to do.

On the contrary, Frankenmuth is a popular destination in Michigan and is full of unique activities.

You can sample German beers, participate in German festivals, and try some classic German dishes.

During Christmas the town turns into a Bavarian Christmas Wonderland.

It is a beautiful time of year to experience one of the best weekend getaways in Michigan.

But, no matter what time of year you decide to go, Frankenmuth is bursting with fun activities, amazing food, and great shops.

Traverse City

Traverse City is perfect for outdoor adventurers looking for a fun weekend getaway in Michigan.

It is the largest city in northern Michigan and has a great combination of outdoor activities and city charm.

If you are looking to go there for a weekend of outdoor fun, you won’t be dissapointed.

You can enjoy winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, and in the warmer months explore hiking and biking trails or go swimming.

Traverse City is also right by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, so if you have the time, make sure you explore there too.

If you want to explore more city offerings, Traverse City has a great downtown area.

You’ll find great restaurants, unique shops, and plenty of distilleries and breweries to sample.

Traverse City really has it all for when you’re planning your next Michigan getaway weekend.

Detroit And MotorCities If You Love Automotives

Detroit is known for being the Motor City.

It is home to the MotorCities National Heritage Area, a massive historic district full of museums, beautiful architecture, and more.

This makes it a perfect cheap weekend getaway in Michigan for automotive enthusiasts.

Many of the stops in the National Heritage Area are free to admire and walk through.

You can also create your own road trip and select the destinations that interest you most.

A few of the more popular museums do have an entrance fee, but they typically are reasonably priced.

Detroit is also home to some amazing restaurants.

While on your road trip through the Motor City you can sample the best food of Detroit and learn about the city’s automotive history.

It is a really unique way to explore one of Michigan’s most important cities.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is another great cheap weekend getaway that is perfect for those looking to explore the great outdoors.

The National Lakeshore is a unique National Park in Michigan that is home to plenty of history.

The Au Sable Lighthouse was built to prevent shipwrecks by logging and mining ships that would come to the Lakeshore.

Now, visitors can tour the lighthouse and learn more about the area’s logging and mining history.

It eventually became a National Lakeshore, which meant it was no longer used for logging and mining purposes.

Since then, a number of hiking and biking trails have been created for visitors to enjoy.

The Lakeshore also offers Park Ranger guided hikes, where you’ll learn about both the history and the natural flora and fauna.

The Park Rangers also offer guided kayaking trips, which is a fun activity in the warmer months.

It is located on the shores of Lake Huron, near Saginaw Bay.

If you want to enjoy water activities, Bay City has plenty to offer.

You can walk along the shoreline, go swimming in the bay, or even experience sailing on a schooner.

I’d highly suggest taking the time to enjoy a dinner or stargazer cruise and enjoy beautiful views of the bay.

The town also has some really unique activities as well.

There you can explore Michigan’s largest antique center, stroll through the stalls at the City Market, or watch a show at the State Theater.

The Uptown District is also full of gourmet restaurants and charming boutiques to explore.

You’ll never run out of fun activities while enjoying a Michigan weekend getaway in Bay City.

Lansing To Explore Michigan’s Capital City

Lansing is the capital city of Michigan and full of amazing places just waiting to be explored.

If you love history, then Lansing is the perfect place for your next cheap weekend getaway in Michigan.

In just a five block radius, you can see some of Lansing’s most popular sites.

From the Capitol Building, several different museums, a National Historic Landmark, and more.

Many of them are free or fairly inexpensive to view or explore.

The city is also full of one of a kind breweries, distilleries, and restaurants.

In the summer, it’s a foodie’s paradise with food and beer festivals happening almost every weekend somewhere in the city.

Lansing also has a thriving art district, with four neighborhoods full artists and art galleries.

If you want a break from exploring the city, you can take a walk on the River Trail and find yourself surrounded by nature.

Lansing is full of activities with something for everyone.

Coastal Living Magazine named Saugatuck one of the  “10 All-Star American Beach Towns” and it’s easy to see why.

Saugatuck is a charming small town known for being as “All American” as apple pie or baseball.

But don’t let that fool you, it’s still a bustling town with plenty of fun things to do.

Being one of the best beach towns, it naturally has a beautiful length of beach where you can swim and relax.

The small town also has a thriving culinary scene so you can easily find a delicious and unique meal after spending all day on the beach.

Saugatuck is also known for it’s large art scene and many artists and art lovers flock to the city yearly.

You’ll find beautiful art galleries, art shops, and even street art.

For those who want to escape for a slowed down and relaxed weekend on the beach Saugatuck is one of the best weekend getaways in Michigan.

Packing List For Your Michigan Weekend Getaways

A  concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when on your weekend getaways in Michigan. It is always important to protect your personal information.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone like I have. And wow is it fast!

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use. It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for group shots or that perfect selfie! 

I was not a fan of packing cubes until I started to use them! This is the  exact set  of packing organizers I use  whenever I travel.

I cannot believe how much they really do help with the organization. If you have not considered packing cubes, I would recommend giving them a try.

Hydration is so important. You want to remain hydrated to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels. 

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you. 

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for travel and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack or your purse.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble. You can find  filter replacements here. 

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this  set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all. 

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

One more point, there’s really nothing in Lansing except the uninspiring capital and MSU. Ann Arbor has much more to offer. It is a melting pot of cultures offering art, food, sightseeing and adventure.

My husband grew up in Michigan and all of my in-laws still live there. The first few times my husband took me there after we started dating I was blown away by the beauty and the sheer number of things to do in Michigan!

Now, I love it there, too, and so am excited to share with you my top eight recommendations for where to spend a weekend getaway in Michigan.

Known for its great fishing spots, snowy winters, Great Lakes (adjacent to four of them), and impact on the auto industry, Michigan is an ideal destination for those interested in winter sports and summer festivals or lazy lake days. No matter when you choose to visit, a weekend in Michigan is bound to be memorable.

While most people think of Detroit when they think of Michigan, there are so many other places worth visiting here. Take a weekend trip to one of these destinations. Even if you only have a weekend to spend in Michigan, you’ll get to see plenty of what this state has to offer.

Traverse City

A weekend in Traverse City should include stops at its many museums. From a collection of Inuit art at the Dennos Museum Center to the hands-on Great Lakes Children’s Museum, you’re bound to find something that intrigues you and your travel buddies here.

This Michigan trip destination is also known for its cherries, so stop by the Cherry Republic of Traverse City for a wide array of locally-sourced products.

While in Traverse City, you’re also a relatively short drive (about 40 minutes) from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakefront, which borders Lake Superior and has incredible views and hiking trails. Plus, it provides lots of fun for playing and sliding on the dunes.

The best time to visit Traverse City is during the summer, which coincides with the cherry-picking season. If you’ll be in town around the Fourth of July, plan your getaway around the National Cherry Festival . After all, who can say no to a weekend filled with fireworks and delicious food?!

Grand Rapids

Like Traverse City, Grand Rapids is a great place to visit with kids. It has a children’s museum (Grand Rapids Children’s Museum) and a zoo (John Ball Zoo).

For adult fun, you can go brewery hopping in “Beer City USA,” a title Grand Rapids has earned for its large number of taprooms.

Grand Rapids has its own international airport, making it easy to coordinate travel for your weekend trip. Fly into Gerald R. Ford International Airport or take an Amtrak train downtown.

This popular Michigan getaway is known for its cultural attractions. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and has a distinct college-town vibe while also incorporating its own flair separate from the university thanks to good eats and historic architecture.

You can catch musical events and art exhibitions year-round through A2SF , and if you visit Ann Arbor in June, you’ll be in town for their annual festival. For food, you can’t miss trying one of Zingermann’s famous subs (expect to wait in line!).

Ann Arbor is close to Detroit Wayne County Airport, so you won’t need to drive far after landing. While this is a fun place to visit any time of year, you’ll likely find the most to do during the summer.

Ann Arbor is also just a half hour away from Hell, another fun tourist destination. Playing off of its attention-grabbing name, this small town is home to the aptly named Hell Hole Diner and a gift shop called Screams (which also serves up some delicious ice cream). Whether your trip to Ann Arbor is during the spooky season or when Hell freezes over in the winter months, be sure to add room on your trip itinerary for this day trip destination.

Mackinac Island

Once a port used during the fur trade, Mackinac Island is now a car-free destination filled with nature and history. Much of this weekend getaway destination is considered a Michigan state park, so have your camera ready to capture the beauty of your surroundings.

A top thing to do during your trip to Mackinac Island is to visit Colonial Michilimackinac and the nearby fort to see living history interpreters and check out historical exhibits.

Since you can’t drive to Mackinac Island, you’ll need to take a ferry to get there. The ferry runs from April through October, and you can bring a pet or bicycle with you. While you can still visit Mackinac Island when the ferry isn’t running, the alternative is a 7-minute flight. Therefore, your best bet is to visit when the ferry is running to save money.

Harbor Springs

There’s always something fun happening in Harbor Springs, MI. If you’re visiting over the weekend, check out the local galleries and boutiques. From jewelry to glasswork, you’ll find all sorts of trinkets to bring home with you. Try to align your trip with an interesting event or festival – every month has something different to offer!

In winter, ski buffs will enjoy a weekend getaway to Harbor Springs since it has some of the best skiing in Michigan at Boyne Highlands Resort. (Not to be confused with Boyne Mountain Resort 40 minutes to the south in Boyne Falls – though that’s also a great place for skiing in Michigan!)

Harbor Springs is roughly a half hour away from Mackinac Island, so consider visiting both if you’re taking an extended weekend for your trip. Since the town hosts celebrations during each season, this is an ideal place to visit year-round.

If you’re looking for wineries in Michigan, look no further than Baroda, Michigan. Here, you’ll find Gravity Vineyards and Winery’s tasting room overlooking the lake, and Red Top Winery’s selection of wines and ciders. You can visit even more wineries in nearby Berrien Springs.

The best time to visit Baroda is during the summer when there isn’t much rain and the temperature is tolerable. You can get here by flying into South Bend International Airport in Indiana, about a half hour away. Alternatively, there are a couple of Amtrak stations nearby that you can take a train into.

Chateau Chantal

Another winery that is a destination all unto itself and makes for a great weekend getaway in Michigan is Chateau Chantal in Traverse City near the Old Mission Peninsula. This is a great spot for a romantic rendezvous or a girls’ trip. My sister-in-law and her friends often go here for their annual mom’s weekend away. And my husband proposed here…so yeah, we like this place. 😉

Chateau Chantal has sprawling grounds lined with vineyards that are adjacent to the impressive tasting room, a large space with plenty of room at the tasting room bar. But you might want to take your glass of Reisling or another varietal to the patio, which has an expansive view over the gorgeous vineyards.

Best of all for an easy, no-stress wine weekend away is that there is a B&B right on site where you can stay.

Frankenmuth

Also known as Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth is a cultural hotspot for all things German, located about 90 minutes north of Detroit. Festivals like Oktoberfest and Zehnder’s Snowfest are great reasons to visit Frankenmuth on their own. If you won’t be in town during the festival season, you can still get a taste of Germany on a tour of Frankenmuth Brewery.

If you’re traveling with kids, head to one of the two indoor water parks in town (Zehnder’s Splash Village and Bavarian Inn Lodge Waterpark and Family Fun Center, the latter of which is only open to overnight guests). So even if it’s cold outside, don’t forget to pack a bathing suit!

Frankenmuth is relatively close to Bishop International Airport, and there’s also an Amtrak station in nearby Saginaw. There’s quite a bit of activity here in the fall and winter, making these the perfect times to visit.

Think Detroit isn’t family-friendly? Think again. Many of the Motor City’s neighborhoods—including Corktown, Greektown and Mexicantown —are riding to a rebound, with foodie-approved restaurants featuring urban farm-to-table fare. In fact, the restaurant boom is partly responsible for the city’s renaissance.

Detroit has long been a fantastic and educational destination for families, though, considering it’s the birthplace of the automobile. You can tour the Ford Piquette Plant where Henry Ford invented the Model T, even stopping for a photo in an old car. For more history, head to The Detroit Historical Society, where you can walk what looks like the old streets of Detroit. Be sure to have coneys (hot dogs) while you’re in town, too—they’re a big deal in Detroit!

2. Mackinac Island

Traveling to Mackinac Island (pronounced MAK-uh-naw) is like traveling to the past. The remote island, located in Northern Michigan, is only accessible by ferry or boat, and once there, guests enjoy purely old-fashioned fun during their family weekend trip in Michigan—particularly at the island’s grand resorts. One of them, appropriately named the Grand Hotel, features horse-drawn carriage tours, afternoon teas, ice cream socials and lawn games. Plus, it’s all-inclusive!

You can also stop by the historic Glen Haven General Store, or visit during the Port Oneida Fair in August; the fair lets visitors experience what Midwest life was like in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. 4. Traverse City

Located near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, Traverse City has several beaches, along with many opportunities to hike and bike along Lake Michigan. 5. Grand Rapids

Did you know Grand Rapids is known as Furniture City? It’s home to several office furniture companies, and the city prides itself on this with furniture exhibits just about everywhere—even in hotels! There’s more to Grand Rapids than fancy furniture, though.

The up-and-coming city has been compared to cities in Europe for its world-class museums, festivals and restaurants. Skip the hustle and bustle of sports arenas and gambling hotels for a more intimate peek at Michigan’s largest city when you stay at The Siren Hotel , housed within a 1926 Art Deco landmark. These ten exciting weekend trips from Detroit will get you out of the city in about 4.5 hours or less.

1. Cleveland, Ohio

No doubt best known for its famous Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and lively sports scene, Cleveland, Ohio , is a bustling city getaway. If cheering for the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, or Indians is a no-go, other top attractions include visiting the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, strolling through the Botanical Gardens, and shopping at the West Side Market.

Highlights : The ferry ride is a highlight but there is also plenty to look forward to once it is over. Milwaukee offers culture, nightlife, sporting events and more.

Highlights : The views are amazing and getting to the top of the hill is half the fun. If you head to Pittsburgh, you have to take a ride up Mount Washington on the Duquesne Incline or the Monongahela Incline. Once at the top, grab a drink or a bite from an eatery overlooking the city.

The best last-minute Fourth of July weekend getaways near major cities

It's the Fourth of July—what are you doing staying home?

While major cities like Los Angeles , Chicago , New York , Boston and Miami all offer plenty of Fourth of July fun, they can get quite crowded. Instead, escape the throngs of travelers by embarking on a last-minute getaway somewhere nearby. Below, we’ve rounded up five of our favorite Independence Day weekend getaways within easy driving distance of the aforementioned U.S. cities. From an oceanfront SoCal retreat to a quaint Rhode Island town steeped in history, these last-minute July 4th vacation destinations truly offer something for everyone. 

Traverse City, Michigan

Situated along the coast of Lake Michigan just four hours from Detroit and five hours from Chicago, Traverse City goes all out for Independence Day, with free events like an elaborate fireworks show , which, in our opinion, is best enjoyed out on the water via this Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise . The Fourth of July also coincides with the city’s weeklong National Cherry Festival . Taking place from June 29 through July 6, this fun, fruity festival celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage, vibrant culture and natural beauty (fun fact: Traverse City produces nearly half of the tart cherries in the U.S.). As part of the fun, visitors can partake in events such as the National Cherry Festival Airshow ; live musical performances, parades , races and family-friendly programming are available, too. Also, be sure to carve out an afternoon to stroll through the city’s bustling downtown area , which is lined with eclectic shops—including The Cherry Republic and The Cherry Stop , both of which sell all sorts of cherry-forward food and drink—and restaurants—and restaurants like Grand Traverse Pie Company and Park Street Cafe .

Where to stay: Just steps from the town center, the Delamar Hotel Traverse City provides a convenient and stylish home base for exploring. Take in the sweeping water views from the comfort of your guest room, drink and dine al fresco and enjoy amenities like beach access, water sports rentals and complimentary grab-and-go breakfast.

Bristol, Rhode Island

Unbeknownst to many, this tiny Rhode Island Town—about two hours from Boston—is home to America’s oldest continuously running Independence Day celebration. The 2.5-mile Military, Civic and Firemen’s Parade dates back to 1785 (yes, really) and lures in hundreds of out-of-towners from near and far. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg: In the days leading up to the main event, the patriotic town offers a handful of live concerts and a spectacular fireworks display . The fun continues post-parade when travelers can partake in outdoor activities like biking and boating; walking tours are also available. Meanwhile, history buffs need not miss The Bristol Historical and Preservation Society , housed in an 1828-era jail, and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in honor of the Bristol Veterans of the Civil War. 

Where to stay: The beautiful Bristol Harbor Inn offers 52 contemporary guest rooms and suites overlooking Narragansett Bay. The on-site spa is a favorite amongst wellness-seekers, while the Dewolf Tavern is the perfect spot for drinking, dining and mingling with fellow guests; live music is also available.

Coronado, California

Less than 20 minutes from San Diego and 2.5 hours from Los Angeles, this SoCal resort town is the place to be for fun in the sun this July 4th weekend. On Independence Day, the destination offers an array of free activities and events , including a 12K, a parade, an aerial show courtesy of the Navy Leap Frogs, several concerts and, of course, a fireworks show. Additionally, Coronando’s namesake beach spans nearly two miles and offers swimming opps, beach volleyball, fire pits and—get this—a designated Dog Beach . Pick up a beach read at Bay Books , partake in outdoor activities like surfing , biking and kayaking , embark on a food tour or enjoy a self-guided art tour . 

Where to stay: The beachfront Loews Coronado Bay Resort is especially ideal for families thanks to its kid-centric programming , spacious suites, and amenities such as three heated pools plus water sports and beach cruiser rentals. The on-site marina, spa and four drinking and dining venues are just the icing on the cake.

Key West, Florida

Approximately four hours from Miami by car, this lively Florida island city is famous for its pastel-hued homes, beautiful beaches, fascinating history and vibrant coral reefs, making it one of the country’s most beloved vacation destinations. Spend Independence Day exploring historic Old Town before popping into El Meson de Pepe for a refreshing slice of Key Lime Pie; alternatively, treat yourself to a frozen concoction at the Ernest Hemingway-beloved Sloppy Joe's Bar . Other must-see sites and attractions include The Ernest Hemingway House , Mallory Square (a popular spot to watch the sunset), Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and the Truman Little White House . Finally, come nighttime, experience the destination’s breathtaking fireworks show via a catamaran cruise .

Where to stay: Fresh off a $79 million renovation, Casa Marina Resort is just steps away from buzzy Duval Street. Atlantic City, New Jersey

This Fourth of July, beat the Big Apple crowds and head 2.5 hours south to Atlantic City , known for its over-the-top entertainment and casinos, wide, sandy beaches and miles-long boardwalk that dates back to 1870. This July 4th weekend, the destination will feature a slew of performances from artists like Kesha and Hassan Minhaj . Wake up early on Independence Day to catch the city’s annual parade . Later that day, the festivities will conclude with a fireworks show on the beach. While we wouldn’t blame you if you spent all day soaking up the sun on the beach or trying your luck in one of the (many) casinos, kids-at-heart will especially love Island Waterpark .

Where to stay: The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is among Atlantic City’s most exciting hotels with its 15-plus bars, restaurants and lounges, a buzzy beach area, an expansive casino, a swanky spa and (so much) more. After catching the fireworks show, guests can retreat to one of the hotel’s sleek rooms and suites, some of which overlook the ocean.

Gulf Shores boasts more than 30 miles of white sand beaches , making it one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast . You don't have to visit during the summer to experience the area's best weather, though: Spring and fall bring temperatures that are still comfortable for sunbathing, swimming and strolling on the sand.

Budget-friendly things to do in Gulf Shores include bike riding at Gulf State Park; casting a line at Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier; exploring The Wharf, an entertainment and shopping venue; and visiting the Orange Beach History Museum and the Gulf Shores Museum, both of which are free. Massanutten Resort: Massanutten, Virginia

Situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is known for its mix of history (Biltmore Estate), nature (the Blue Ridge Mountains) and food (from craft breweries to a flourishing dining scene). Travelers can tackle a number of hikes in Asheville for some scenic – and low-cost – fun. You can also stroll along the 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail to learn about the city's unique past, go for a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and explore downtown, where you're bound to come across some of the tiny city's famous street performers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an easy and relatively affordable day trip from Asheville, too.

Bahia Honda Key, Florida

You don't have to visit Key West – or break the bank – to experience the best of the Florida Keys; in fact, the best beaches in the Florida Keys are not even in Key West. At Bahia Honda State Park, for example, you can swim, rent kayaks and snorkeling gear, or even hop on a boat to snorkel in the Looe Key marine sanctuary reef. Entry fees at Bahia Honda State Park are $8 per vehicle with two to eight passengers. Plus, you can camp here for just $36 per night (not including tax and the utility and reservation fees). Renting a cabin costs about $120 per night plus fees from May through October, and slightly more in the cooler months.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

One of the most affordable beach destinations in the U.S., Myrtle Beach is known for its roster of low-cost or free activities that appeal to travelers of all ages. Explore the mile-long Myrtle Beach Boardwalk (home to the iconic Skywheel) as well as Broadway at the Beach (an entertainment complex), both of which offer live entertainment including music performances and fireworks shows. Vereen Memorial Gardens, just north of the city, is also free to visit. Here, you can explore stunning (and free) parks and nature preserves such as Bok Tower Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, as well as Bonnet Springs Park. There are also plenty of places to enjoy fishing, one of the island's most popular activities. A visit to the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site – the last Texas lighthouse open to the public – costs just $5 per adult ($3 for kids). Sandcastle Days, the island's beloved festival that is hosted every October, is also free.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

One of the most beautiful national parks in California , Joshua Tree National Park is also fairly affordable thanks to campgrounds like Jumbo Rocks, where you can enjoy the seclusion of the deserted wilderness. There are more than 100 primitive campsites available here, with reservations required in the busy season from September to May; a maximum of six people can occupy a campsite for just $20 per night (on top of fees to enter the park).

San Luis Obispo, California

Combining small-town charm with beautiful weather, San Luis Obispo is an ideal weekend getaway from Los Angeles (about 190 miles from the city).
