There are plenty of cultural spots, including seven churches and several historical monuments-turned-museums. 

While most of the Netherlands is surrounded by canals and dikes, water and boats make a unique part of Dordrecht’s cityscape.

While the name suggests a beautiful rural town in France, Bourtange is actually in the Netherlands! Although, it might be the longest day trip from Amsterdam yet.

With a population of 430 people, there isn’t much room for proper shopping — but you can check out smaller quirky shops with Delfs Blaauw pottery, candles, other gifts, and trinkets.

There are a couple of ways to get around for day trips in the Netherlands depending on what you’re comfortable with; taking public transport, hiring a car, and cycling. 

Using the Dutch public transport system for day trips

Public transport in the Netherlands is reliable and easy to use — most big cities have trains, trams, and buses, and some, like Rotterdam and Amsterdam, even have metros and ferries. 

If you’re travelling between cities and towns, you can buy many types of (cheap) train tickets . The day ticket is the most common and accessible ticket to travel on any train during off-peak hours.

You can buy tickets on most trams and buses within cities. Metro and train stations have machines to buy tickets. The Netherlands also has an extensive night public transport system that you can use.

An OV-chipkaart (public transport card) can be the easiest option if you plan to make a lot of day trips from Amsterdam using public transport.

With this, you can load a balance on so you can check in and out of the turnstiles with ease.

You can usually buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart in the major train stations. Just go to the NS service desk and ask to buy one!

Hiring a car to visit Dutch towns and cities

There are five major car rental companies where you can hire a car: Avis Budget, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt.

If you’re flying into Schiphol Airport, you can rent a car from one of these companies directly at the airport. You can pre-book a car or just go with the flow and see what’s there on the day!

If you’re arriving in Amsterdam another way, these car rental companies have rental locations in the city itself. 

Biking on a day trip from Amsterdam

Biking around your desired day trip city is a great way to get a feel for Dutch cycling culture! 

If you have a personal OV chipkaart (only available to residents of the Netherlands), you can go full circle and rent an OV-fiets .

The NS has set up bicycle rental locations at most train stations, bus and metro stops, and P+R facilities which you can rent for a few hours at a time. 

If you only have an anonymous OV-chipkaart or none at all, you can rent a bicycle from companies in Amsterdam.

Different types of bicycles are available for hourly/daily rates. We promise you don’t have to bike like a seasoned Dutchie — but do be careful on the bike paths. 

What are the best day trips from Amsterdam?

Depending on how much time you have during your trip to Amsterdam, there are different trips you can take

Some beautiful locations are within 30 minutes by car or train, such as Haarlem or Volendam, while others can take two to three hours to reach, like Bourtange and Tilburg. 

You can choose to visit smaller towns and villages or a big city like Rotterdam — depending on whether you want to visit another urban space or get a break in the quieter, more rural areas, there are plenty of locations to pick from.

Where can I see windmills near Amsterdam?

The closest windmill town to Amsterdam is Zaanse Schans, less than 30 minutes by either car or public transport. If you’re looking for other windmill locations, you can check out Kinderdijk and Schiedam, close to Rotterdam.

Where can I see tulips near Amsterdam?

Tulip season runs throughout spring, so the best time to see the Dutch tulips is from March to May. The most popular tulip attraction in the Netherlands is De Keukenhof in Lisse, a large flower garden that features tulips. 

Lisse is about 1 hour and 22 minutes away from Amsterdam Centraal Station by public transport and 44 minutes by car. You can only enter the park with a ticket, so make sure to book them in advance if you’re interested in visiting. 

There are other tulip fields by independent farmers in Lisse while walking or cycling around — usually, you can visit these parks for free, but there’s no guarantee the farmers will let tourists near their tulips.

Can you do a day trip from Amsterdam to Bruges?

Yes! You can take a train from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Bruges.

Travel time and prices vary depending on the type of journey, which train you take, and whether you have transfers. The average travel time from Amsterdam to Bruges is between one to two hours.

Where is it easy to travel to from Amsterdam?

We recommend a location within 30 minutes from Amsterdam by car or train for extra easy travel. You can check out Haarlem if you want a change of scenery but want to stick to a city. 

Smaller traditional towns like Marken and Volendam will give you a great impression of the scenic Dutch countryside.

What’s close to Amsterdam by train?

Generally, the bigger the city/town, the easier it is to reach by train and public transport. So if you’re looking for a laidback day trip with public transport, going to a city like Den Haag, Leiden, and Gouda is the most convenient. 

Intercity trains connect most of the Randstad cities, so these trains run consistently — every 15 minutes in both directions from 5 AM to 12 AM.

This is my second tour with Europamundo. The first was not all that great, but I was partially to blame so I decided to give them another shot. This tour includes stops at locations that are in line with what one would expect to see in the cities included. The transportation is decent and comfortable. Another family and I were asked if we would mind going on a different tour bus because of seating space. Once on the bus it was conducted entirely in Spanish and we had to remind the guide that there were English speakers on board. The city tours provide a lot of information and scenic memories. Make a note that it says on the last day the end of services is after breakfast. Actually, after the city tour in Paris the day before the end of the tour you will get dropped off by the L'ouvre under the premise of a "free day" and you are on your own to get back to your hotel. The accommodations are about a 7.5/10. In Amsterdam I was at the Radisson Blu. It was a nice full service hotel. Daily breakfast was good. Room was comfortable and clean. However, it is not located by anything but warehouse/industrial buildings. However, in Paris We stayed at the Residhome Aparthome in Nanterre. The location is great!!! Lots of restaurants and buzzing college town. However the accommodations were horrid. Specifically my room #209 had old peeling furniture and mildew on the roof and doorways. I took pics and will upload. The staff were French speaking only. Overall, the tour is good. Saw lots of sights and made lifetime memories. Europamundo needs to do a little more fine tuning to be sure the tours run a little more smoothly. I will say I would consider doing another tour with them. Considering the price the value matches what was paid.

The tour was good. The hotels were great and the breakfasts were plentiful. The bus driver was very safe and helpful with bags. The guides were of varying satisfaction. I was disappointed that the itinerary stated key sights we would visit but we didn’t actually go inside and free time didn’t allow for all the visits I wanted to do and we didn’t see everything on the itinerary. It was a good taster trip. I see much more on my own.

We had a fantastic experience with our Glimpse of Europe tour. Thanks to our tour director Steve and our driver who made our trip fun and recharge our memory with history. For a short tour, we were able to explore a good amount of places and fulfilled some of our dreams. We had a wonderful group as well who we were really nice even though we came from different countries and backgrounds and gaining friendships is a blessing. Overall we had a fantastic experience.

8 EASY Weekend Trips from Amsterdam to Other Countries

Why would you want to take a weekend trip from Amsterdam? So many reasons! You could live in Amsterdam as we do. Perhaps you are a local or an expat that lives in the Netherlands and it’s easy to get to Amsterdam as a starting point. Maybe you are in the city for work for an extended period of time and you want to make the most of the experience. Or maybe you are making Amsterdam your base for a longer European adventure!

Whatever your personal reason for wanting to use Amsterdam as your jumping off point, there are an amazing amount of quick weekend trips to be had that are short flights or train journeys from Amsterdam. It’s super easy to get around Europe thanks to a well-connected central train station and an easy (and cheap to get to) international airport.

Weekend trip #1 // Amsterdam to London

How to get there: Quick flights ( Check flight prices ) are about 50 minutes or the international train, the Eurostar takes just over 4.5 hours. Though a new and faster line is coming. Exciting times!

Somehow, I actually don’t write much about London even though I go often as it’s one of my favorite places to go from Amsterdam. Last year I went four times! It is such an interesting and large place with so much going on. I’ve taken a couple of food tours: one in SoHo and one by the London Bridge so that I could get introduced to proper British food. Every time I go, I try to make a reservation for an afternoon tea. I like Scoff & Banter Tea Rooms because of the variety and fancy-pants factor, but we did try the Alice in Wonderland one too. Sadly, I enjoyed the show part of it over the actual eating part. At least it was fun!

There are so many neighborhoods that I keep exploring and finding new ones. I’ll walk around and think “I could live here.” Then I go to another part of the city and think, “Nope, this is the perfect spot.”. 

Then, I laugh at myself because I’ll never be able to live in the center of London! Besides, I’m perfectly happy with the house we bought in Amsterdam . To be fair, I never thought that could happen either. Isn’t life a funny thing?

Anyway, back to London. If you like history there are plenty of museums and even non-museum places to enjoy. But sometimes it’s nice to just look at the city. Look at Buckingham Palace. Look at the Parliament Building. Look at Tower Bridge. Other times it’s nice to dive into the culture on Carnaby Street, or in SoHo. Walking in the area of Little Venice is so nice and relaxing and climbing up Primrose Hill is perfect for an awesome view.

With so many options, you might want to think about what kind of accommodation you want before you even start looking. But check out a full listing of hotels to see what fits you best. This is such an easy trip from Amsterdam when you fly from Schiphol airport to London City Airport because you are already in the city!

Hint: Stay near a subway or train station and stay farther out to pay a little less but not be too inconvenienced.

Weekend Getaway #2 // Amsterdam to Paris, France

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 1 hour and 15 minutes or the Thalys train that takes 3 hours and 18 minutes.

I try to do this every year so I’m definitely partial to this one. Even though I’m not in love with Paris like many people are, I still love visiting as a weekend getaway from Amsterdam. 

Yeah, I don’t understand myself either. Then again, I love to eat real French food every once in a while and my favorite tea brand is there! There’s just something about walking around Paris. The best thing is when you discover your spots…the places you like the most for whatever reason.

One of my favorite things that I’ve done in Paris was to grab an eclair, go to the big grassy area called Esplanade des Invalides with Edna  and hang out. So simple, yet so nice.

It’s always nice to get a good view of the iconic landmarks in Paris. Though I haven’t put together a post on this, Edna did! She also has a lot of article on Paris in general, so definitely check those out. Stay an extra day and make a long weekend out of the trip!

Weekend Excursion #3 // Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

For a quick weekend trip, hopefully, you’d be able to just take a carry-on. In that case, there are always super cheap flights to get there. It’s also very quick and easy to get to the city from the airport by bus so you don’t waste time.

If you like old town centers and bridges that give you the most incredible views, Basel will not disappoint. Even in the winter when most people don’t think to come to Europe it is such a beautiful place no matter when you are able to visit. Being able to walk around and see so many beautiful places and buildings makes it a great escape. The pace is calm and there is plenty of places to eat and drink once you are ready for a break.

If you stay in a Basel hotel, you get the Basel pass which gives you free public transit and discounts around town. Now, that’s a nice bonus and adds a bit of value to your trip.

Weekend Getaway #4 // Amsterdam to Lisbon, Portugal

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 3 hours which isn’t bad for a long weekend.

There are so many flights from Amsterdam to Lisbon, but also, it’s a quick ride from the airport to the center of town.

I don’t know about you, but everyone I know has been talking about Lisbon for the past year. It’s for a good reason! With the pretty great weather, amazing food, and the treat of Vinho Verde, it’s a great place to be.

Take a food tour to discover the flavors of Portugal , make a reservation at a delicious restaurant that is known for their seafood, and grab a drink and sit waterside to enjoy the sunshine. It’s one of those places that you can easily find touristy things to do , or just sit back and relax. 

Weekend Trip #5 // Amsterdam to Berlin, Germany

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about an hour and 25 minutes.

Oh, Berlin! Berlin is such a popular destination for so many reasons. It has a great vibe, clubbing, its own unique culture, and the food scene is definitely growing. Summer is the best time to go since festivals in parks being very popular. Food trucks, music, and green grass all come together to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Hardly seems fair to think about if you are currently experiencing not-so-friendly weather.

For a weekend away, there are a ton of possibilities of what to get into , but I’ll leave that part up to you. What’s awesome about Berlin is that the variety makes it so that there is something for all us travelers. Indoor museums, outdoor events, historical significance, and so on. It’s easy to go back for multiple trips and always have something new to discover. Discover the best place to stay that fits you best!

Weekend Trip #6 // Amsterdam to Warsaw, Poland

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 2 hours

Warsaw isn’t always the first place that comes to mind for a weekend trip, or even as a short break from Amsterdam. But with a direct flight, a stunning old town, a castle and lots to see, why wouldn’t you go? Since a weekend isn’t super long and you want to have your money stretch farther, it’s a good thing it’s cheap to get from the airport to the old town center (less than €1) by bus and takes less than one house. If you’re more concerned about time than money, a taxi or Uber is always an option as well.

Weekend Trip #7 // Amsterdam to Groningen, Netherlands

How to get there: By train( Check train prices ) about 2 hours

We all love Amsterdam, it’s just one of those places you have to experience. But when you want to see stunning Dutch architecture in a small city with lots of energy, but without all the tourists, Groningen is a perfect weekend getaway from Amsterdam. It’s a university town, so it’s incredibly lively without being overwhelming. See the full post we wrote up about planning a weekend in Groningen .

You easily get that local feeling by simply strolling down the street. When you start getting peckish, pop into one of the many restaurants available. Because it’s a city with a younger population, the offerings range from traditional to eccentric. There’s something for everyone here. I found it to be a super relaxing place to be with plenty to do if you want, but nothing that gives you FOMO. It’s a nice balance.

Weekend Trip #8 // Amsterdam to Hamburg, Germany

How to get there:  Super-quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about an hour long.

You may notice that this is the second time I’ve mentioned Germany, but Hamburg is quite different (and pretty far) from Berlin. It’s one of those places that truly surprised me with how cool it really is. You’ll find some great activities to do and areas to visit. My favorite is down by the water, but the old town with its stunning buildings is pretty spectacular as well.

This probably isn’t a shock to anyone, but one of my favorite parts was the variety of food. We ate at so many amazing spots all over the city, from pulled pork bbq to fine dining, to a breakfast worthy of getting up early, this city has it all. Wh ile there are many great options all over Europe, I really think these are perfect for quick trips to be able to get a nice taste of that city. Visitors to Amsterdam can use the city as a hub and still get a really great European experience while exploring more cultures, food, and iconic sights. And those who are local have easy access to great travel opportunities just by living in or around a city like Amsterdam.

Compact in size and offering superb transport links (especially by train),  the Netherlands  is a treat to explore – and much of the country is easily accessible as a day trip from its capital,  Amsterdam .

Den Haag’s standout museums, Zandvoort’s sandy beaches and Zaanse Schans’ working windmills are just a few of the wonderful attractions within an hour’s journey of the city – all some of the best day trips from Amsterdam.

1. Take in the royal vibes of Den Haag (The Hague)

Travel time: 45 minutes

While Amsterdam is the Dutch capital, ’s-Gravenhage (the Count’s Hedge) – better known as Den Haag (The Hague) – is the seat of government and of the royal family. On the shimmering Hofvijver lake, the Binnenhof complex is the world’s oldest parliament building still in continuous use. Its 13th-century Ridderzaal is home to the throne from which the Dutch monarch addresses the upper and lower houses each year.

For more royalty-tinged thrills, head to the extraordinary  Mauritshuis , where works by Dutch masters form the basis of the 800-strong Royal Picture Collection. You can also drop into former royal palace Lange Voorhout, now home to the  Escher in Het Paleis , which showcases the improbable creations (such as those never-ending staircases) of Dutch graphic artist MC Escher. Alternatively, spend a sunny afternoon simply holding court at one of the city's numerous canal-side cafes, where staff will inevitably treat you like – you guessed it – royalty.

How to get to Den Haag from Amsterdam:  Den Haag is located southwest of Amsterdam and takes around an hour to reach by car. Trains travel to Den Haag Centraal from Amsterdam Sloterdijk (journey time: 45 minutes) and Amsterdam Zuid (journey time: 38 minutes). Den Haag is also well connected to Delft and Rotterdam.

2. Get a culture fix in Leiden, birthplace of Rembrandt

Travel time: 30 minutes to 1 hour

Laced by canals lined with gabled 17th-century buildings and crisscrossed by bridges, the lively city of Leiden is a great place to get your culture fix. The city is home to the Netherlands’ oldest university, which dates from 1575, and is notable as birthplace of Rembrandt. The Museum De Lakenhal , which reopened in 2019 after a stunning renovation and expansion, displays many of the painter’s famous works, such as  The Spectacles Pedlar , alongside works by numerous other Dutch masters.

Elsewhere, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden harbors ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Etruscan artifacts, while the Museum Volkenkunde is dedicated to ethnology, with cultural treasures from around the globe that tell stories about humanity’s shared existence.

Once you’ve had your culture fix at the museums and galleries, head to the beautiful Hortus Botanicus Leiden , one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, where you can admire (and smell) colorful blooms from across the world.

How to get to Leiden from Amsterdam:  Leiden is southwest of Amsterdam and takes around an hour to reach by car. Trains run from Amsterdam Sloterdijk (journey time: 30 minutes) and Amsterdam Zuid (journey time: 23 minutes) to Leiden Centraal station.

3. Take your kids to see the windmills at Zaanse Schans

Travel time: 15 to 25 minutes

Visitors of all ages will enjoy an afternoon at Zaanse Schans – but since  younger travelers especially will enjoy seeing the creaking sails of its six authentic windmills in action, this is a top day-trip choice for families. This engaging attraction also boasts a recreated 17th-century village made up of traditional buildings from around the Netherlands, including a clog factory, and the workshops of a cheesemaker and pewter smith. The nearby Zaans Museum delves into the history of the Netherlands' earliest mills. After your visit, you can take a shortcut back to the station via a 5-minute riverboat journey.

How to get to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam: Zaanse Schans is located to the north of Amsterdam, roughly 25 minutes away by car. Alternatively, catch the Sprinter train from Amsterdam Sloterdijk station to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans (journey time: 12 minutes) and walk 1.5km (1 mile) to Zaanse Schans. During the summer months, you can also travel between Amsterdam and Zaanse Schans by ferry.

4. Tour the contemporary architecture of Rotterdam

Travel time: 1 hour

In stark contrast to the Netherlands’ historic cities, Rotterdam was flattened during WWII. Over the decades of postwar recovery, the city transformed itself into a veritable gallery of modern and contemporary architecture. Anyone who loves out-there design should visit sites like the Overblaak Development , with its pencil-shaped tower and “forest” of elevated, crazily-angled cube houses, one of which is a museum revealing what life inside is like. The bowl-shaped Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen  has a mirrored exterior and a green rooftop restaurant. The horseshoe-shaped Markthal , meanwhile, is a vast, covered food market with sit-down eateries beneath a curvilinear ceiling covered in outsized fruit-and-vegetable murals, and makes an eye-popping stop for lunch.

A great way to get a feel for the city is to take a water taxi: there are 50 docks around the city. If you’re after dedicated architecture tours, De Rotterdam Tours or Urban Guides are both excellent options.

How to get to Rotterdam from Amsterdam:  Rotterdam is south of Amsterdam and takes just over an hour to reach by car. Fast Intercity Direct trains connect Amsterdam Zuid (journey time: one hour) and Amsterdam Sloterdijk (journey time: one hour and 10 minutes) with Rotterdam's Centraal Station. Rotterdam is also directly connected to Delft and Den Haag.

5. Channel Holland’s Golden Age in Delft

Travel time: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Spreading out from its monumental market square ,  Delft ’s enchanting, canal-woven core has scarcely changed since the painter Johannes Vermeer made a career creating masterpieces like Girl with a Pearl Earring during the Netherlands’ 17th-century Golden Age. Although none of his original works are on display in his hometown, you can see reproductions at  Vermeer Centrum Delft .

You can also see the painter’s final resting place inside the 13th-century  Oude Kerk  church, nicknamed “Scheve Jan” (“Leaning John”) due to its sloping tower. Practically modern by contrast, the Nieuwe Kerk  (or “new church”) was built between 1381 and 1655. Climbing its tower’s 376 steps rewards with spectacular views.

Delft is also famous for its blue-and-white-painted porcelain. Take a tour of a Delftware factory such as the renowned  Royal Delft , which runs workshops where you get to paint your own tiles and other pieces.

How to get to Delft from Amsterdam:  Southwest of Amsterdam in the heart of South Holland , Delft takes around an hour to reach by car. Direct trains run from Amsterdam Zuid (journey time: 45 minutes) and Amsterdam Sloterdijk (journey time: one hour) to Delft.

6. Combine city and beach with a trip to Haarlem and Zandvoort

Travel time: 20 to 35 minutes

Only 20km (12 miles) from Amsterdam,  Haarlem retains its medieval charm. Its tangle of cobbled streets center on its lively  Grote Markt , overlooked by the Grote Kerk van St Bavo . Topped by a 50m-high (164ft) steeple, this Gothic church houses one of the world’s finest organs – the ivories of which were once tickled by a 10-year-old Mozart. Concerts usually take place on Tuesday evenings and Thursday afternoons; tickets are just €4 each.

Stretching between Haarlem and coastal sand dunes is  Zuid-Kennemerland National Park , home to red foxes, fallow deer and numerous bird species. Just beyond is the busy seaside resort of Zandvoort (aka “Amsterdam Beach”), a popular spot to soak up the sun on summer days. Public transport runs from Haarlem – though the most enjoyable way to explore both the park and the coastline is by standard or electric bike.

How to get to Haarlem from Amsterdam:  Haarlem is west of Amsterdam, and the journey time by car is 35 minutes. Alternatively, visitors can take the Sprinter train from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem, which takes around 20 minutes.

MTG Nadu and Storm decks dominate Modern Pro Tour decklists in Amsterdam

Big changes to Magic: The Gathering Modern decklists are expected at the final Pro Tour of the season, featuring powerful cards from the Modern Horizons 3 set. 

The new Modern Horizons 3 set had its global launch on June 14, containing many powerful MTG cards for formats like Commander and Modern. MTG players didn’t waste time testing out cards like Nadu, Winged Wisdom and Ral, Monsoon Mage, including them in the two most popular decks getting played at the MH3 Pro Tour Amsterdam from June 28 to 30. Over 20 percent of the field is playing a Bant deck built around Nadu, according to the June 27 Modern Metagame breakdown from WotC .

Here are the most popular Modern decks being played at the final Pro Tour tournament of the 2023-2024 season. 

• Bant Nadu: 49 players and 20.2 percent of the field
• Ruby Storm: 23 players and 9.5 percent of the field
• Jeskai Control: 22 players and 9.1 percent of the field
• Mono-Black Necro: 17 players and seven percent of the field
• Eldrazi Tron: 14 players and 5.8 percent of the field 
• Four-Color Nadu: 13 players and 5.3 percent of the field
• Boros Energy: 13 players and 5.3 percent of the field
• Jeskai Wizards: 12 players and 4.9 percent of the field

Nadu, Winged Wisdom garnered attention from many players when it was first spoiled. The Bird Wizard was my top pick to build a Commander deck around and has become the hottest card to play at MH3 Pro Tour Amsterdam. Nadu has an ability that easily draw cards when a creature becomes the target of a spell or an ability. This ability can trigger twice per creature, which, in the Modern format with cards like Shuko that have an Equip cost of zero, can draw a lot of cards. 

Ral, Monsoon Mage is another powerful MH3 card that has a combo with Ruby Medallion, reducing the cost of cards like Pyretic Ritual, Reckless Impulse, Wrenn’s Resolve, and Desperate Ritual. The One Ring from LTR is still making waves in Modern, played in the MTG color combo Jeskai Control and Eldrazi Tron decks. The Catboat was founded by a woman named Mrs. van Weelde, who loved to take in rescue cats and care for them in her home. People kept bringing her more and more cats, and soon she ran out of space for all of them. She decided to do something no one had ever done before — buy a houseboat and dedicate it to rescue cats.

Since the 1960s, The Catboat has gone through a few different iterations, but its mission remains the same.

“Our goal is simple: to help as many cats in need as possible. This includes cats that have been found or cats that people can’t or will not take care of anymore,” The Catboat states on its website.

They adopt out over 250 cats a year and have some permanent residents as well. Some of the cats who currently live on The Catboat include Orfeas, a “handsome, brave” cat whose family surrendered him because he fell out of a window, and Beyaz, “an elderly gentleman” with no eyes.

The Catboat has long been a favorite tourist destination for cat lovers visiting Amsterdam. Of all the unforgettable things to do in the city, it says a lot that people go out of their way to visit The Catboat. One TikTok user, @fairy.cat.mother, said The Catboat was their “favourite part of [their] trip for sure.”

Even though people from all over the world clamor to visit The Catboat, it has limited visiting hours to make sure the cats never get overwhelmed.

A royal visit to the city that was once called new amsterdam.

Among other stops in New York, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will tour an exhibit focused on 400 years of Dutch history.

Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll get details of a royal visit to New York City. We’ll also find out what Mayor Eric Adams said when asked about pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

They did not arrive in the United States the way many couples do — the husband, who has a pilot’s license, was in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 jet, serving as the co-pilot for at least part of the flight from Europe.

Still, on their outing in New York City today, the pair, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, will do what many tourists do. They will stroll along the High Line and go to a museum.

But they said the trip had a purpose — emphasizing ties between the Netherlands and the United States and strengthening economic connections. The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Netherlands ranked third in direct investment in the United States with $617.1 billion at the end of 2022, after Japan ($712 billion) and the United Kingdom ($663.4 billion).

So the royals’ itinerary includes a midday event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard about business startups and ways to accelerate clean technology .

They will also go on a tour of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they will “discuss urban challenges such as climate action, affordable housing and societal resilience” with community leaders, according to the Dutch government. Their day will end with a reception at Hudson Yards in Manhattan; the king and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to speak there.

The trip is not the royals’ first visit to New York. Willem-Alexander and Máxima visited in 2009, when he was the crown prince (he ascended to the throne in 2013). Máxima had lived in New York from 1996 to 2000 when she was an investment banker.

They arrived in New York City after two days in Georgia and one in Albany. (Willem-Alexander flew the plane there, too, according to a spokeswoman for the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.) Willem-Alexander’s focus was on jobs during a session at a nanotechnology center in Albany that describes itself as the largest nonprofit semiconductor research-and-development facility in the country . Willem-Alexander was all business in his brief remarks there, saying that trade with the Netherlands accounted for 57,000 jobs in New York State.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that “New York became what it is because of the Dutch” and mentioned names like Brooklyn and the New York Knicks that have Dutch roots. She also referred to the Schuyler mansion in Albany, where Elizabeth Schuyler grew up. Of the three daughters in the household — familiar to theatergoers who’ve seen “Hamilton” — she was the one who married the man whose portrait is on the $10 bill.

Later, as the king looked on, Hochul and a Dutch trade official signed a memorandum of understanding that confirmed shared interests in advancing semiconductor research and development.

Today, after their stops in Brooklyn, Willem-Alexander and Máxima will walk through an exhibition commemorating 400 years of Dutch history in New York at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side. The exhibition includes a 1626 letter that describes the “purchase” of Manhattan from Native Americans for 60 guilders, which later was said to have been $24.

The exhibition also includes a letter from three chiefs of contemporary Lenape communities whose ancestors lived in Manhattan when the Dutch arrived with hopes of establishing a Dutch republic in North America. And the exhibition displays a map of New Amsterdam, called the Castello Plan, that was painted around 1660, long before Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British.

So what do you say when a king and queen cross the threshold?

“I’m going to invite them to have a look at Dutch history, beginning at the very beginning,” said Louise Mirrer, the president and chief executive of the historical society .

“What’s eye-opening is to see evidence that the Dutch actually did believe they had purchased Manhattan from the Lenape,” she said. “The letter really says something about how cultures can understand each other incorrectly, or misunderstand one another. Obviously, history bore out how the misunderstanding was disadvantageous to the Lenape.”

Enjoy a sunny day in the mid-80s. The evening should be mostly clear, with temperatures in the low 70s.

Adams praised a reporter’s ‘summer body’

Mayor Eric Adams told a journalist who asked him about pro-Palestinian demonstrations that it looked as if he had been working out and complimented the reporter’s “summer body.”

One of the mayor’s top female advisers, sitting nearby at City Hall, shook her head in disbelief. Another deputy mayor looked down and covered her eyes.

My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons writes that the remark was not unusual for Adams. He often comments on people’s physical appearance or clothing. And while he speaks proudly about the number of top cabinet officials who are women, he has also made the point to note that they lead while wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, with their signature red-soled heels.

This was not the first time that Adams had singled out the reporter he said had a “summer body” — Pete Cuddihy, an intern at Fox News. At a news conference in March, when Cuddihy asked about the city’s housing crisis, the mayor said, “I like that turtleneck — people don’t wear turtlenecks anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Fox News sent a statement from Cuddihy that said: “Speaking only about my interaction on June 11 with Mayor Adams, I felt his comments towards me were friendly, and I did not feel uncomfortable.”

Adams is far from the only notable elected official who has been criticized for making comments that seem inappropriate. President Biden has made remarks about people’s physical appearance; Donald Trump often mocks people’s physical appearance and was found liable in a civil trial for sexually abusing the writer E. Jean Carroll. And the Justice Department found that Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, subjected female employees to a “sexually hostile work environment,” made unwanted comments and gave preferential treatment to some employees based on their physical appearance.

Adams, a Democrat, was himself accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a colleague in 1993 when he was a police officer.

Fabien Levy, a deputy mayor and Adams’s chief spokesman, said the mayor “would never intentionally make someone feel uncomfortable. He’s a warm and engaging person who talks to New Yorkers the way any regular New Yorker speaks to one another.”

Anyone who lived or worked in Midtown Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s knew Gene Palma as the guy who “played” Sixth Avenue. He even had a cameo in “Taxi Driver.”

With shoe-polish blackened hair and heavy makeup, Gene would play his drum on the sidewalk. Sometimes, he would bang his sticks on newspaper vending machines, or sit on the curb and play the street itself.

In the winter, to avoid the frigid north wind that swept down the avenues, he would move onto the side streets. Once, when I saw him on 52nd Street, I asked why he moved onto the side streets every winter.

“The sound’s better,” he said.

Amsterdam says 'Stay Away': City votes to move cruise terminal to another port

AMSTERDAM — Amsterdam wants to move a cruise liner terminal out of the heart of the historic capital city as the latest step in its ongoing battle against pollution and hordes of tourists clogging its narrow, cobbled streets.

The Dutch capital is one of the many picturesque European cities – from Rome to Venice to Paris – grappling with how to manage visitor numbers that are again soaring  in the aftermath of shutdowns during the coronavirus pandemic.

Aldermen at Amsterdam's municipality voted Thursday in favor of a motion calling on the city to move the terminal away from its current location close to the central rail station.

“A clear decision has been made by the council that the cruise (terminal) should leave the city,” Ilana Rooderkerk, leader of the centrist D66 party in Amsterdam, told The Associated Press in an email on Friday. “The municipal executive of Amsterdam is now going to work on how to implement it. In any case, as far as we are concerned, large ships no longer moor in the city center of Amsterdam.”

Dick de Graaff, director of Cruise Port Amsterdam that operates the terminal in the city center, told the AP the company had taken note of the vote and is awaiting the municipality's next move.

“There is no immediate closing of the terminal. The council’s call is to relocate the terminal – and we await a follow up from the alderman on investigations,” he wrote in an email response.

De Graaff said that the Amsterdam terminal expects 114 ships to stop there this year and 130 next year.

The vote is the latest step in the Dutch capital's long-running campaign to reduce the impact of tourism. Other measures include banning people from smoking weed in the narrow streets of its red light district and a proposal to move out of the city center many of the windows where scantily-clad prostitutes stand.

Earlier this year, Amsterdam even launched a campaign titled, “Stay Away,” against what it described as nuisance tourism.

“Visitors will remain welcome, but not if they misbehave and cause nuisance. In that case we as a city will say: rather not, stay away," Deputy Mayor Sofyan Mbarki said in a statement at the time.

For Rooderkerk, banning cruise ships is about more than just reining in tourism.

“The polluting cruise does not match the sustainable ambitions of our city," she tweeted after the vote.

She said that towering cruise ships sailing into Amsterdam also prevent construction of a second bridge over the waterway to link the city with its fast-growing northern suburbs.

Cruise liners are not the only mode of transport facing restrictions in Amsterdam. The national government also has announced plans to cut the number of flights at Schiphol Airport, the busy aviation hub that serves the city.

After the shows in London, Swift will travel to Dublin, Ireland, where she will perform for three nights starting June 28. After her Ireland stop, Swift will play in Amsterdam starting on July 4, with stops in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy afterward.

Swift will return to London’s Wembley Stadium on August 15 to play five more nights. The singer will return stateside on October 18, playing three consecutive nights at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
