Tourism in France: The 2022 trends and outlook for 2023

Camping, theme parks, fewer nights away: we summarise how last year shaped up and look ahead as paris is named the ‘most powerful’ tourist city in the world.

france tourism statistics 2022

Local breaks, open-air camping, rising hotel prices and the return of (some) international visitors were among the major tourism trends in France last year, new figures show, as 2023 begins with some uncertainty.

Last year was hailed as the ‘return to normal’ for the hospitality sector after two years of chaos due to the pandemic.

Visitor numbers, hotel room occupancy and airport passenger numbers, however, were under 2019 levels. However, the sector still brought in nearly €50billion, the latest report on the tourism economy published by France’s tourist agency Atout France shows.

The major trends included:

Campsites recorded a 7.5% rise in visits compared to 2019.

This was attributed to several factors including people’s desire for nearby, open spaces after lockdown, and lower holiday budgets. The sector is also attracting visitors with higher budgets as campsites and ‘glamping’ venues become more high-end.

Open-air attractions and theme parks

Open-air attractions and theme parks also did well. For example, in Ile-de-France, the Aventure Floréval and Winnoland parks saw visitor numbers rise by 27% and 29% respectively, compared to 2019, figures from the comité régional du tourisme (CRT) show.

In Loir-et-Cher, the Beauval zoo welcomed a record two million visitors in 2022, a rise of 25% compared to 2019.

Theme parks belonging to the Compagnie des Alpes (such as Parc Astérix, and Futuroscope) also saw 10 million visitors; a rise of 6% compared to 2019.

And despite the rising price of tickets, la Compagnie des Alpes said that people were still spending more than normal in the parks’ hotels, shops and restaurants.

Tourists in France were less likely to leave their home region to go on holiday and were also spending fewer nights away, Atout France said. In addition, it found that 44% of people in France did not go on holiday in summer 2022.

It blamed this on the global economic downturn.

Typical Paris sites less popular

Some typical tourist sites in Paris also proved less popular than in previous years, largely due to fewer visitors from Asia. The Louvre saw 20% fewer ticket sales, and Versailles Palace sold 17% fewer.

Elsewhere, Lourdes saw a third fewer pilgrims visit last year than its typical number.

Hotel occupation rates and revenue were also down. Nationwide, revenue was down 4.4% compared to 2019. This may be due to rising hotel bedroom prices, which have risen 14% on average (higher than inflation) due to extra costs of raw materials and energy.

International clients, American and European clients have largely returned to hotels, however, the figures suggest. Yet, business travel has not yet reached 2019 levels, even though it has restarted. In Ile-de-France, professional shows recorded 1.3 million fewer visitors compared to 2019.

Tourism accommodation has recorded high competition from alternatives such as campsites and Airbnbs.

2023 uncertainty

So far, 2023 is looking to be an uncertain year for the sector. Rising costs of energy, raw materials, and even salaries could threaten the survival of smaller, independent hotels.

Recruitment within the hospitality industry is also still proving tough, especially for seasonal jobs.

Paris ranked ‘most powerful tourist city’

It comes as Paris was named the ‘most powerful’ tourism city in the world in a study by British non-profit organisation the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The city welcomed 34.5 million tourists in total in 2022. Its ‘powerful’ ranking also came partly due to the investments made in the capital due to the forthcoming 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These included investments in infrastructure and the resources needed to secure the event.

Read also: Paris Olympics 2024: How can I become a volunteer?

The WTTC also considered the amount of money spent by tourists, whether on hotel rooms, or on tourist activities such as museum visits. In 2022, visitors to the city spent a record €35billion.

Beijing, China, came in second place behind Paris. Two other Chinese cities also came in the top 10: Shanghai in 4th, and Guangzhou in 10th. The WTTC predicts that in the next 10 years, all of the top 10 will be in China.

In a press statement, Julia Simpson, president and general director of the WTTC, said: “Major cities like London, Paris, and New York will remain world powers, but over the course of the next few years, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macao will climb in the list of major urban destinations.”

The US also has three entries in the top 10; Orlando, Las Vegas, and New York. These receive significant income due to theme parks, nightlife and gambling, and food and culture respectively.

The amount of money spent by tourists is not the only factor in the list, however. Tokyo, Mexico, and London also figure on the ranking, partly due to their historical significance and recent appearance in the global media.

Dubai and Doha were also included due to this, partly because of the recent football World Cup.

In contrast, the list does not include cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona, or Singapore, despite their high tourist spending.

Foreign tourists brought in a record of 58 billion euros to France in 2022, according to figures released by the French Tourism Development Agency, Atout France. International tourism receipts in France were up by 1.2 billion euros at the end of December 2022 compared to their 2019 level, the agency reported. “This result is explained by the return of European and American customers but also by inflation, which increases the revenue in value.”

In terms of revenue from international tourism, France remains ahead of Spain, though Madrid accumulated 64.8 billion euros at the end of November, 2022. Among the foreign customers who spent the most in France in 2022 are nationals of three border countries: Belgium with 7.3 billion euros, Germany with 6.5 billion and the United Kingdom with 6.2 billion. The United States is in fifth place with 5.6 billion in cumulative spending in 2022, according to data from Atout France.

In 2022, air traffic was still down 31% compared to 2019, mainly due to the weakness of flows from Asia. China has since reopened the borders for its nationals, and other distant markets such as India, South Korea or Australia are showing signs of growth in the coming months.

The flow of travelers from Asia is still very low, although it increased slightly at the end of the year. Atout France
France set to be most visited country in the world by 2025

Another aspect worth noting is that local tourism has gradually returned to positive numbers throughout the year. The rate of departure of the French for trips in metropolitan France is 23%, over the whole year, a rate close to the reference situation in 2019 with overnight stays down only 5%.

After a positive trend during the Christmas vacations and ski resort areas, despite an initial weak or even absent snowfall, Atout France looks forward to the first quarter of 2023 with some optimism, despite a challenging outlook due to inflation and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Early this year, France was set to be the most visited country in the world, according to GlobalData, which estimates that the country will attract 93.7 million international travelers by 2025. The analytics company specified that the forecast would place the country ahead of competitor, Spain, which overtook France in 2021.

According GlobalData’s ‘ Tourism Destination Market Insight: Western Europe (2022) ’, France held the title of most visited country in the world prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, welcoming 88.1 million visitors in 2019. It was, however, overtaken by Spain in 2021.

Having attracted 66.6 million international visitors in 2022, France is now set to re-claim the title, with the number of international arrivals expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.1% between 2022 and 2025.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Travel Tomorrow (@traveltomorrow.eu)

Alongside Italy and Spain, France represents a significant segment of the growth in Western Europe, GlobalData reports. The country is not only popular with travelers from Europe itself—especially the UK, Germany and Belgium—but it is also popular with visitors from further afield, including China and the United States.

“One key transportation project in Western Europe is the Ultra Rapid Train line, which is being planned by the European Commission to improve connectivity between Lisbon in Portugal and Helsinki in Finland,” said Hannah Free, Travel & Tourism Analyst at GlobalData. “The program involves the construction of an 8,000km double track high-speed railway network between Lisbon and Helsinki with a loop around the Baltic Sea. The rail line will pass through, Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, and Finland.”

Informations Rapides · 11 May 2022 · n° 123 In Q1 2022, collective tourist attendance was 11.3% lower than in Q1 2019   Tourism occupancy in hotels, campsites and holiday and other short-stay accommodation in metropolitan France - first quarter 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, occupancy in collective accommodation -except for campsites, measured in overnight stays, was 11.3% lower than its level in the first quarter of 2019. Attendance fell by 16.4% in hotels and 1.2% in holiday and other shortstay accommodation (HOSSA).

Considering the outstanding fall in touristic attendance through 2020 and 2021, quarterly results are compared to the same quarter in 2019, allowing comparisons to pre-crisis levels

Documentation

Hotels did not came back to pre-crisis attendance, major disaffection in united kingdom customers in hotels, the return of resident customers is confirmed in holidays and other shortstay accommodations, for more information.

Hotel occupancy by resident customers in France remains below its pre-crisis level (−7.1%, making −2.0 million overnight stays) but non-resident occupancy remains far below (−36.7%, −5.0 million overnight stays).

Attendance decline in all categories of hotels, yet less significantly in high-end hotels. Occupancy decline by 21.1% in 1 and 2 stars hotels, by 23.6% for unclassified hotels compared to pre-crisis levels: in these categories the sharp fall in non-resident occupancy is combined with a significant decline in overnight stays by resident customers. Overnight stays in 3 stars hotels remain 12.3% lower than in the first quarter of 2019, those in 4 and 5 stars hotels by 14.6%. In these hotels, resident customers’s occupancy retains non-resident customers’s disaffection. Overnight stays even slightly increased in 4 and 5 star hotels (+2.3% compared to 2019).

In the first quarter of 2022, hotel occupancy is lower than in the first quarter of 2019 in all territories. The decrease is mainly located in Île-de-France (−3.9 million overnight stays in a national decrease of 7.0 million), suffering disaffection of non-resident customers and business attendance only partially coming back. More than a quarter of overnight stays are missing compared to Île-de-France first quarter of 2019’s level.

Attendance also remains below its pre-crisis level in mountains areas (−3.1%) and coastlines (−6.4%), but resident customers coming back (respectively +10.1% and +2.6% compared to the first quarter of 2019) restrained the fall in overnight stays by non-residents.

Overnight stays declined by −20.1% in business attendance, losing its importance even though still accounts for almost half of hotel overnight stays. Occupancy declined sharply in Île-de-France (−31.5%).

  • Reference area: France including overseas departements (DOM) for hotels, Metropolitan France for HOSSA

In the first quarter of 2022, in metropolitan France, hotel nights by European customers remained below those of the first quarter of 2019 (−27.1%), yet the decline was much less significant than non-european’s (−53.7%). Occupancy from the United Kingdom was almost twice as low as in the first quarter of 2019 (−44.6%). The fall in German customers’s overnights was also sharp (−30.0%).

On the other hand, Dutch customers are coming back in hotels (+16.0% for Dutch overnight stays compared to the first quarter of 2019).

tableau Overnight stays in french hotels by customer’s country of origin *

  • Reference area: metropolitan France

The decline in occupancy compared to the first quarter of 2019 is much less stronger in holidays and other shortstay accommodations (HOSSA) (−1.2%). The rise (+1.4%) of resident attendance, traditionally the most important one, almost offset the decline in non-residents’s overnight stays (−12.4%).

In tourism residences, attendance even came back to its pre-crisis level (+1.0% compared to the first quarter of 2019). Coastline areas (+16.4%) and, in a lesser extent, mountains areas (+1.4%) mainly benefit this recovery. In the latter, attendance by non-resident customers was 3.2% higher than in the first quarter of 2019. On the other hand, these customers are still missing in urban areas, particularly in Île-de-France (−48, 5% compared to the first quarter of 2019). Therefore, overnight stays in HOSSA fell sharply (−20.1%) in this area.

Revision of series concerning hotels and holidays and other shorstay accommodation: As of January 1, 2019, data from non-responding hotels are imputed using a new method, based on their characteristics. This new method of imputing non-response tends to slightly reduce the total number of overnight stays (−0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2018) but has no impact on quarterly trends. This method was also implemented for HOSSA in 2020. This publication’s data for the year 2019 were re-calculated in order to be properly compared to 2021’s data.

Uranium fuel planned for high-tech US reactors a weapons risk, scientists say

A special uranium fuel planned for next-generation U.S. nuclear reactors poses security risks because it could be used without further enrichment as fissile material in nuclear weapons, scientists said in an article published on Thursday.

Paris expects 33 million tourists in 2022

French and foreign visitor numbers should approach 2019 levels. But inflation, Covid-19 and the quality of the welcome in the city may take their toll.

They're back and they mustn't be disappointed. This was the message sent on Tuesday, June 14, by representatives of Parisian tourism, satisfied with the return in force of foreigners but anxious that the "visitor experience" should not damage the city's image.

Despite the prolonged absence of Chinese tourists, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau (OTCP) estimates that 33 million visitors (French and foreign) will visit Paris in 2022, compared to 38 million in 2019 (the last reference year before the Covid-19 pandemic) and only 19 million in 2021.

The rebound since April is expected to continue this summer, according to airline reservation figures as of May 10. International arrivals are expected to be down 22% for the summer as a whole, but the continuing trend of last-minute bookings suggests better figures. Europeans are back to 2019 levels, while Americans are gradually returning (North America -16%; Latin America -19%).

The hotel industry is back

"This recovery is driven by the high-end segment and is accompanied by an increase in the length of stay," said OTCP Director Corinne Menegaux. This should contribute to an increase in average spending for the full year.

The Paris hotel industry, crippled by the Covid-19 crisis, is breathing again and posting double-digit price increases. Not all business tourists have returned, but with an average occupancy rate of 75% in May, the hotel industry is back in its role as France's powerhouse. Since the week of April 11, revenue per room, the industry benchmark, has been higher than in 2019, according to MKG Consulting (leading market research firm for the hotel industry).

The Ascension and Whitsun weekends, with the Champions League final and the French Open tennis finals, have pushed prices up to "excessive" levels, according to Frédéric Hocquard, Paris deputy tourism director, who wants to raise this issue with the business organizations.

Can inflation slow this recovery in tourism in the long term, while Paris is already suffering from its image as an expensive city? The global economic situation and the persistence of the Covid-19 pandemic are raising doubts about the figures for the fall when convention tourism will have to take over from leisure.

Concern at Paris airports

The other reason for concern is how tourists are received, since the "visitor experience" is considered by professionals as central to the appeal of a city. Two police operations have been carried out in recent weeks in front of the Eiffel Tower, to disrupt the activities of keyring sellers, three-card Monte operators and other con artists. Vendors of fake tickets for the Louvre were also arrested on Wednesday, June 8, and increased vigilance has been announced on the issue of unregistered guides.

Tourism: 2023, a record year for France

Before 2024, a year that may be exceptional, 2023 may be a record year for France in terms of tourism attractiveness! Atout France has published a trend keynote explaining that in late November, revenues of international tourism in France reached about 59 billion euros (+12% compared with 2019). The year 2023 may be a record year, with an overall total of 63 billion euros in international revenues. This trend may be due to several factors: a sharp growth of clients from North America, a confirmed pick-up for European clients, a positive impact of the Rugby World Cup and a gradual comeback from Asian markets.

The keynote was released during the second Destination France summit held on 12 January in the Chantilly palace. French president Macron presided the event, and seized the opportunity to remind “ the strategic nature of tourism industry for France ”, which welcomed millions of international travellers in 2023 .

Tourism, a strategic sector of French economy

President Macron welcomed about 200 business leader and decisionmakers from the biggest international and French groups in tourism industry during the second Destination France summit. As the government website explains, the Summit was held “ in the light of an exceptional year for French tourism and the soft power of our country ”, a year that will be marked by several highlights: the commemoration of the Normandy landing, the reopening of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Francophonie Summit planned in autumn.

The Summit was indeed the perfect opportunity to present “ the assets of France for investments in terms of tourism and the economic rearmament and attractiveness policy ”. The idea is to maintain “ France in the first place in terms of tourism destination worldwide ” and keep “ the first place in terms of attraction of foreign investments in Europe ”, while having the ambition of “ becoming the first sustainable nation in the world ”. And the government website reminds that tourism industry is a strategic sector of the industry reaching about 2 million jobs in France (across all job denomination) and represents about 7.5% of French GDP .

Growth trend

While waiting for 2024, which may well be an exceptional year , the previous year was just as buoyant. In detail, the account of the balance of payments in tourism industry reached a record 16.5 billion euros in late November . In total, out of the first 11 months of 2023, 58.9 billion euros in international revenue were recorded, i.e. 9% more than in 2022 and 3% compared with 2019 (the year before the health crisis). Such figures show the growth of European clients and the comeback of Asian clients :

  • for “neighbour” Europe: +37% for the Belgians, +21% for the Dutch, +20% for the British;
  • for the Asian area: +36% for Japan, +20% for China.

Regarding the international air traffic , in spite of a slight decline, North America (Canada and Mexico in particular) and destinations from Asia present a strong growth compared with 2019 and 2022. As such, bookings made in December confirm the “growth trend” mostly for Japan and Canada, but also Spain and Italy.

Key sector in terms of employment

In economic terms and in the accommodation and catering, the tourism industry records an overall +7% increase of the number of business creations compared with 2022 and +4% compared with 2019 .

With a total 38,700 jobs created over one year , the tourism industry “is again the first recruiting industry in France”, says the keynote And more precisely, in the 3rd quarter of 2023, the accommodation and catering sector recorded 1.3 million employees in the private sector , a +1.3% increase compared with 2022 and a +12% increase compared with 2019. Some 15,000 jobs were created in the 3rd quarter of 2023, while the average salary increased by 3.5% compared with 2022, i.e. an 8 billion euros total payroll .

19 of the most surprising statistics about tourism

I t’s World Tourism Day, a time – these days – for much pontificating about sustainability and the impact of travel upon the planet. Instead, we’re going to take a look at some of the more surprisingly facts about the tourism industry. It’s all perfect fodder for your next pub quiz.

Aviation accounts for just 2 per cent of global carbon emissions

But first, a word on sustainability. Alongside giving up meat, taking fewer flights is usually billed as the best way for individuals to cut their carbon footprint, and with the recent “flight shaming” trend, it can feel like we’re being collectively bullied to stay on the ground. All of which might lead one to assume that aviation accounts for a considerable chunk of global emissions. The actual figure, therefore, may be smaller than you’d imagine. In 2022 aviation, when the industry reached 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, it accounted for just 2 per cent of global carbon emissions.

By 2030, one in four tourists will be Chinese

A few years ago, the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI) predicted that overseas trips by the country’s residents would increase from 145m a year to more than 400m by 2030. In other words, it would account for around a quarter of international tourism. The pandemic put the brakes on such staggering growth, but expect things to start picking up again – fast.

Saudi Arabia wants to surpass France as a holiday destination

Speaking of 2030, that is the year when Saudi Arabia wants to start welcoming 100m annual visitors – more than the record 91.1m France, the world’s most visited country, welcomed in 2019. It’s all part of Vision 2030, the state’s grand plan to jettison its overreliance on oil. Central to that plan will be the launch of Riyadh Air, to take on the likes of Emirates, the construction of a vast new airport designed to accommodate up to 120m annual passengers, and the creation of two new coastal “cities” – Amaala and Neom – to lure sunseekers .

France’s number two tourist town?

Paris is number one – naturellement. But number two isn’t Bordeaux, Nice or Marseille. It’s Lourdes, a town of 13,000 residents that manages to attract 6m visitors every year thanks to the apparitions of a peasant girl called Bernadette. It has 279 hotels to choose from, according to Booking.com – only the French capital has more.

Only 0.07 per cent of the world’s population have been to Antarctica

You get that rough figure if you divide the number of people who visit Antarctica each year (100,000) by the number of people born each year (140m). But even fewer have been to the least visited country on Earth, Tuvalu – just 0.0026% of us (or 3,700 people a year).

More Britons visit the Canary Islands each year than Italy

Lying on a hot volcanic rock? It’s better than Rome, Florence, Venice, Tuscany, the Dolomites, the Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast rolled into one. That’s according to official figures which show that around 5m of us go to the Canaries each year, compared with the 4.1m who visit Italy.

The biggest hotel on Earth is not in Las Vegas

Twelve of the world’s 20 largest hotels, in terms of total rooms, are found in Sin City. But number one, the First World Hotel (which has a staggering 7,351 rooms), is somewhere rather more obscure. The Genting Highlands of Malaysia. It will soon lose the record, however. The US$3.5 billion Abraj Kudai in Mecca, under construction since 2015, will have 10,000 rooms.

And Macau makes more money from gambling tourists than Las Vegas

Another win for Asia. Macau has earned a reputation as the “Monte Carlo of the Orient”. Chinese games – like Fan Tan , a version of roulette – traditionally dominated its casinos, but the last 20 years have seen a move to embrace the many western-style ways of parting the punter from their money – to the extent that, in 2007, Macao overtook the Las Vegas Strip on gambling revenues.

Which is the most luxurious place on Earth?

What – or where – is the most luxurious place on earth? New York? Dubai? Abu Dhabi? Obviously, the answer depends on how you are defining “luxurious”. But if the key metric is “city with the greatest number of five-star hotels”, then the identity of the most gleaming metropolis may surprise you. It used to be London, but as of earlier this month, and the release of the 2023 edition of jet-set bible the Forbes Travel Guide , the place in focus is – again – Macau. Said chic dot on the map of the Far East now boasts 22 hotels in the uppermost bracket.

Inverness is more popular than Stratford-upon-Avon

With its Shakespeare connections, surely Stratford-upon-Avon welcomes more tourists than plucky little Inverness? Not so, according to VisitBritain. London is number one, by a mile (21.7m overnight visitors in 2019, the last “normal” year), followed by Edinburgh (2.2m), Manchester (1.6m) and Birmingham (1.1m). Stratford lags way down in 17th, with 271,000 arrivals, just below Inverness (which, we assume, is used by many as a launch pad for jaunts around the Highlands).

And Reading trumps Windsor

Both are in Berkshire, but only one can boast the largest inhabited castle on the planet, Britain’s branch of Legoland, and a picturesque riverside racecourse. Yet it is Reading that makes VisitBritain’s top 20 (237,000 visitors in 2019) at the expense of Windsor.

The Maldives really needs your money

The value of tourism to the Maldivian economy is more than US$2bn – or 32.5 per cent of its GDP. Only one destination (hello again Macau) is more reliant on your money . Needless to say, the last few years have been a struggle.

Tourists outnumber locals by 7,853 to 1 in the Vatican City

The Vatican City has just 764 permanent inhabitants, measures a titchy 0.2 square miles, and receives – according to some sources – 6m visitors a year. That’s 7,853 tourists per resident or 31.58m per square mile.

Bangladesh is the world’s least touristy country

At the other end of the scale is Bangladesh. With a population of 169.8m but only 323,000 annual visitors, it welcomes just 0.002 tourists per resident per year, making it perhaps the least touristy country on Earth.

Iran has 25 World Heritage Sites

This won’t surprise anyone who has been there – it’s a fascinating place packed with history (though currently off-limits, according to the Foreign Office). But those who don’t know it well might raise an eyebrow to learn that it trumps the likes of Japan, the US and Greece when it comes to World Heritage Sites .

Bicester Village is almost as popular as Buckingham Palace

Among Chinese visitors that is. Travellers from the world’s most populous country have some other curious destinations on their wishlist . Around 150,000 visit Trier every year, for example, making it the most sought-after German destination among Chinese globetrotters. Why? It is the birthplace of Karl Marx, of course. And Montargis, a small town south of Paris, is also inexplicably popular. That’s because hundreds of young Chinese scholars studied there in the early part of the 20th century, including many future stars of China’s Communist Party.

English really is the global language

Thanks to a combination of empire, mass tourism and invasive Western culture, English really is the global language. According to David Crystal’s book English as a Global Language, at least half the population of 45 countries speak it. There are also just 13 countries where fewer than 10 per cent of the population speak English, including China, Colombia, Brazil and Russia.

16 of the world’s 30 busiest airports are American

A combination of international travel slowdown and America’s ravenous appetite for flying meant that in 2022, 16 of the world’s 30 busiest airports (in terms of total passenger numbers) were on US soil. Number one, as it has been each year since 1998 (except for 2020, when it was temporarily unseated by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport), was Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (93.7m passengers for 2022).

Albania is already welcoming more tourists than in 2019

The pandemic saw tourism slump across the planet, but some countries have recovered far quicker than others. They include Turkey, the fourth most visited country in 2022 (50.5m overseas arrivals, a shade under its 2019 figure of 51.2m), the UAE (22.7m arrivals in 2022 vs 21.6m in 2019) and, perfect for budget sunshine, Albania (6.7m arrivals in 2022 vs 6.1m in 2019).

China has recovered its position as top spender on international tourism in 2023 as Asia and the Pacific consolidates its recovery from the impacts of the pandemic. In 2022, the list of top spenders was headed by the United States. France, Spain and USA took the top spots for most-visited destinations.

Chinese expenditure on travel abroad reached USD 196.5 billion in 2023, ahead of the United States (USD 150 billion), Germany (USD 112 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 110 billion) and France (USD 49 billion). Making up the top ten spenders for 2023 are Canada, Italy, India, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea. India jumped to 8th place, from 14th in 2019, confirming the growing importance of the country as a source market, while Italy rose from 10th to 7th position.

France consolidated its position as the world’s most visited destination in 2023 with 100 million international tourist arrivals. Spain was second with 85 million, followed by the United States (66 million), Italy (57 million) and Türkiye, which closed the top five with 55 million international tourists.

Completing the top ten most visited destinations in 2023 are Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece and Austria. Compared to before the pandemic, Italy, Türkiye, Mexico, Germany and Austria all rose one position, while the United Kingdom rose from 10th to 7th and Greece from 13th to 9th.

On the side on international tourism receipts, the ranking is led by the United States, earning USD 176 billion in 2023, followed by Spain (USD 92 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 74 billion), France (USD 69 billion) and Italy (USD 56 billion).

Following the above, destinations earning the most from international tourism in 2023 include the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Macao (China), India and Mexico which complete the top 15 list of tourism earners.

Upward movements in the ranking among the top earners include the UK jumping to the 3rd position from 5th pre-pandemic, the United Arab Emirates from 13th to 6th, Türkiye from 12th to 7th, Canada from 15th to 9th, Saudi Arabia from 27th to 12th, and Mexico from 17th to 15th.

Croatia (from 32nd to 25th), Morocco (from 41st to 31st) and the Dominican Republic (43rd to 34th) also moved up in the Top 50 ranking by receipts in 2023, as did Qatar (from 51st to 37th) and Colombia (50th to 44th).

Looking ahead to a full recovery globally in 2024

As per the latest World Tourism Barometer , in 2023 international tourist arrivals recovered 89% of 2019 levels and 97% in Q1 2024. UN Tourism’s projection for 2024 points to a full recovery of international tourism with arrivals growing 2% above 2019 levels, backed by strong demand, enhanced air connectivity and the continued recovery of China and other major Asian markets.

Total export revenues from international tourism, including both receipts and passenger transport, reached an estimated USD 1.7 trillion in 2023, about 96% of pre-pandemic levels in real terms. Tourism direct GDP recovered pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching an estimated USD 3.3 trillion, equivalent to 3% of global GDP.

Government of Canada announces funding to preserve the legacy of Second World War Veterans

From: Veterans Affairs Canada

News release

New funding will support the work of the Juno Beach Centre, Canada’s sole Second World War museum

3 June 2024 – Normandy, FRANCE – Veterans Affairs Canada

Millions of Canadians have valiantly served their country with the maple leaf on their shoulder, establishing and protecting the Canada we see today. The Government of Canada will continue to honour and recognize the sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans and their families.

Today, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence highlighted the $3.8 million investment made through Budget 2024 to recognize the legacy of all Canadians who served during the Second World War, including those who fought during D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

The Juno Beach Centre is Canada’s only Second World War museum and education centre in Europe. Thousands of Canadians, young and old, visit the Centre every year to pay tribute to and reflect on the achievements and sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and democracy.

On June 4, alongside Second World War Veterans and their families, the Canadian delegation will participate in the inauguration of the Juno Beach Centre’s Faces of Canada Today exhibit, the newest addition to the Centre.

This visit is part of the Canadian delegation’s commemorative activities marking the 80 th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

The Government of Canada is proud to continue to support the work of the Juno Beach Centre Association by contributing to the long-term preservation of this iconic Canadian landmark. Through this work we will keep the achievements and sacrifices of those who served Canada alive for generations.

“For Canadians, this is a site that carries enormous meaning — both as a memorial to those who served, and for its significance in our long and proud military history. Our government shares this sentiment. Here, looking out at the dunes where so many Canadians fought, we pay tribute to them, and to the more than 45,000 Canadians who died during the Second World War. Today’s investment will help preserve the legacy of these brave Canadians for years to come.” The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence
“Veterans Affairs Canada has been a key partner of the Juno Beach Centre (JBC) for over two decades. This additional funding will help us move forward with a stronger base that we can count on. The JBC is excited to deploy this increase in funding to continue and enhance its work to commemorate the story of Canadians who put their lives on hold – or sacrificed them entirely – to fight for a better world.” Don Cooper, President, Juno Beach Centre Association

Quick facts

The Juno Beach Centre is Canada’s only Second World War museum and educational centre in Europe.

To date, the Government of Canada has invested over $18.4 million in the Juno Beach Centre since it opened its doors in 2003.

In 2022, the Government of Canada contributed three million Euros, approximately four million Canadian dollars, to support the purchase of land adjacent to the Juno Beach Centre .

A 79-year lease has been negotiated to ensure the long-term protection of Juno Beach.
