Do I Need a Lanyard to Cruise?

Cruise Lanyards are a convenience, but they are not mandatory for cruise passengers. Keep in mind that you’ll be using your cruise card several times a day.

You’ll need to present your cruise card ID every time at the bar, at specialty restaurants, at the coffee shop, at the onboard gift shops, at the casino, to play bingo and to get on and off the cruise ship.

Having a lanyard is a safe and convenient way to make sure that you don’t misplace your cruise ship card. Trust me, it happens to the best of us…

Do Cruise Lines Give Out Free Lanyards?

Most cruise lines don’t give out free lanyards. However, there are some exceptions.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruises gives out lanyards to past passengers or Castaway Club members. First timers will need to bring their own.

Princess Cruise Lanyards ( for Medallions)

Princess Cruises give out a basic free lanyard with the Princess Medallion (replaces the cruise card). You can also purchase accessories for your Ocean Medallion before or during your cruise.

Carnival Cruise Lanyards

Many cruisers report that Carnival used to give out free lanyards in the cruise ship casino (as part of the Players Club). However, it seems like this has stopped in recent times.

Carnival does sell lanyards onboard, from sporty styles to blingy styles.

What to Look for in a Cruise Lanyard?

When purchasing a cruise lanyard, you’ll want to make sure that it has a plastic sleeve with a sealed waterproof pouch to hold your cruise card. This is because you may want to keep a few dollars in it while out in a port for an excursion. You can also add your license or government ID and remain hands free.

You cruise lanyard pouch should be able to fit a standard cruise card (they are all the same size). The size of a cruise key card is very similar to a credit card and measures 3 3/8 in length by 2 1/4 in width.

You’ll want a sturdy attachment and you may want to have a detachable clip for versatility.

Where Can I Purchase a Cruise Lanyard?

There are a wide variety of cruise lanyards sold on Amazon and other online retailers. You can also purchase lanyards for your cruise on the cruise ship, although availability may be limited.

I carry an alternative

Just returned from an Alaska cruise and hubby and I used the retractable card holder (from Walmart). So convenient. Tight attachment kept it secured to a belt loop or shirt edge.

I like using my lanyard, but tuck it under my shirt while in port so that every vendor doesn’t know I am a cruiser and up the price for me immediately.

Do you know…..does the lanyard have to be see-through on both sides? I am seeing some cute lanyards that have a fabric covering on one side with a clear window on the other. Will they be able to scan this way, or will I need to constantly take it out of the lanyard to utilize it? Thanks!

It doesn’t need to be clear. You may still need to take it out of the holder to scan 🙂

We started cruising in 2004, we have completed 19 cruises and have 3 more coming within the year....thought I would show what we have been doing with our old cruise cards.....we select a favourite picture of the cruise and type in cruise info to end up with a picture like the ones below,just a thought for those who may be wondering what to do with them

I usually put ours in a scrapbook layout. We too, started cruising together in 2004, and have taken 25 cruises (Including 3 river cruises), with 5 more booked between now and March 2018. Such an addictive hobby.:D

I keep mine (and my wife's)

in plastic sleeves stored in a 3-ring binder.

I collect other folks' cards as well

and now have a collection that wows everyone who look thru it!

I have one album dedicated to Carnival cards

including a range of crew-cards you'd not normally see.

On my first cruise passengers were allowed to keep the menu's as they changed every cruise .I kept the menu's and other cruise souveniers and have them in scrapbooks.

Why we like this card for airline benefits: As part of its overall rewards rate, the United Business Card offers 2x miles per $1 spent on purchases with the airline, making it a top choice for United business travelers.

It’s a decent rewards rate, but we think much of the value of this airline credit card lies in its United benefits, especially the free checked bag. Considering a prepaid checked bag costs $35 per one-way domestic flight, you could save $70 roundtrip. Add in a companion and that’s another $70 saved, or $140 total.

If you take at least one solo roundtrip flight per year, the free checked bag benefit alone could almost entirely offset the annual fee. If you’re traveling with someone else, the annual cost would be more than offset.

U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa Business Card : Best for elevated earning

Welcome offer: Earn $500 in cash back after you spend $4,500 on purchases in the first five months

APR: 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months (then 19.24% to 28.24% variable APR)

Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Card : Best for customized earning

For the 3% earning rate, you can choose from six different rewards categories each calendar month. Whether the categories are useful to you largely depends on your business. Still, there are everyday options to choose from, including gas stations and EV charging, office supply stores, and travel.

Keep in mind that the default category is gas stations and EV charging stations. In addition, there’s a $50,000 cap on combined 3% choice category and 2% dining purchases.

Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card

The main drawback of this card is the $50,000 spending cap, but that’s not an issue if you tend to spend less than that.

Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card

For small business owners who are Marriott loyalists, the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex Card is worthy of consideration. It has a $125 annual fee (see rates and fees ), but this can be easily offset each year with the one Free Night Award you receive after card renewal.

You also receive 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year for simply being a cardholder. That could help you achieve a higher elite status each year while also contributing to hitting lifetime Marriott Bonvoy elite status.

Capital One Venture X Business

The Capital One Venture X Business makes sense if you want top travel benefits with an annual fee ($395) that’s lower than many other premium travel cards. With its $300 annual travel credit for bookings through Capital One Travel, you’re already well on your way to recouping the annual cost each year.

The Venture X Business also offers complimentary Priority Pass membership and free access to Capital One Lounges. Even better, you can bring two guests at no additional cost.
