A trip to Denmark can be much smoother with the use of a few clever smartphone apps. Wifi is super easy to find in Copenhagen, and even in Denmark’s more rural areas there are still cafes, information centres, museums, libraries and convenience stores providing free wifi for tourists. And here’s a pro-tip if you’re in a pinch: McDonalds and Espresso House pretty much always have free wifi hotspots.

While we’re not saying that you need a smartphone in Denmark, we do think that having one can definitely make your trip a bit more organised. Planning ahead with map, translation and currency apps on your smartphone can save you a lot of time and money while you’re on the road. We’ve come up with a list of apps for iPhone/Android that are great for a trip to Denmark, whether you’re visiting Copenhagen or foraging for free food in the countryside.

Free Android and iPhone

CPH Airport is the official app for Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup). It’s really convenient if you’re arriving or departing from here, as it allows you to monitor all incoming and outgoing flights.

Add your flights to the ‘My Flights’ list to get push notifications on your phone with updates about your trip such as boarding times or delays. The app also offers a comprehensive guide to the shopping areas and services offered at the airport. Use this free app to start your Danish adventure smoothly.

Bike & Stay

Made by the Danish tourist board, this app highlights some of the best long-distance cycle routes across Denmark, including coastal routes in the east and west of the country.

Along the way, it’ll point out historical sites and points of interest – it even recommends bike-friendly campsites for you to pitch up at.

The app is free and works offline, so there’s no need to worry about roaming charges.

Copenhagen City Walks

Copenhagen City Walks is an amazing app for people who are doing Copenhagen on a budget . It provides a bunch of self-guided walks through the city, with tons of information about the sights you can see on each walk. This is perfect for people who want to walk around the city and learn about history, art and architecture without having to spend money on guided tours or public transportation.

The app works offline, so you don’t need internet to run it, and won’t pay roaming charges while you’re using it. The full version of the app costs $4.69, but it includes step-by-step navigational instructions of all the walking tours including all the attractions, as well as the fun ability to check off the sights and places that you’ve visited on your trip.

Google Maps

We’ve tried and tested a few different apps for getting around in Denmark and Google Maps is the clear winner – it provides directions that can be tailored to your preferred method of transport: driving, walking, biking or public transport. Google Maps’ navigational feature is definitely one of the best if you have service/data during your trip.

If you don’t, our recommendation is to download the ‘offline area’ map for the areas of Denmark you know you will be travelling in on a given day. Keep tabs on your own current location through your phone’s GPS receiver (independent from the internet connection) so you can avoid heading the complete wrong direction while trying to find that special smørrebrød spot you’ve been recommended.

Rejseplanen

When visiting Copenhagen , the Rejseplanen, or ‘travel planner’ app, is a totally free way to find the most efficient way of traversing public transportation around the city. This trusty app is used widely by locals and visitors in Copenhagen and is accessible in English.

Just type in your destination and the app will show all the different options for getting there. If you have location services activated on your smartphone, the app can also find the station nearest to you – an especially handy feature for those who don’t know the city very well yet.

DOT tickets

DOT (‘Din Offentlige Transport’) is the ticket app for all Copenhagen’s public transport, including buses, trains and the metro, as well as all public in the surrounding regions of Zealand, Lolland, Falster and Møn. You can use the app to buy tickets directly on your smartphone, which means skipping ticket machine lines and foreign transaction fees on your credit card.

The app can be used to buy single tickets for all the city’s zones, commuter cards, extension tickets and passes for unlimited travel (in one- to five-day versions), as well as bicycle tickets which allow you to take your bike on transport. The app is available in English.

Eating and drinking

Too Good to Go

This excellent app is good for the planet and good for your wallet too. Simply download the app, log in and you can order from any shops, restaurants or cafés that have surplus unsold food left at the end of the day. Its aim is to reduce food waste – some 47 million tonnes of perfectly edible food is thrown away each year in Europe – and find a home for unused groceries, bread, pastries and meals.

More than 3000 supermarkets, bakeries, hotels, cafés and restaurants across Denmark have signed up so far, all selling produce that would otherwise be binned at bargain prices. Sign up, and you can save the environment and save money at the same time.

Free Android  and  iPhone

One of the most useful apps for a trip to Denmark, Wolt is a handy food delivery app where you can order food to arrive at your door within thirty minutes. You can order from a wide variety of restaurants, that serve pretty much any type of cuisine from hand-made sushi and vegan burgers to poke bowels and burritos.

The app is user-friendly and has a countdown-clock option so you know exactly how long your food is going to take to arrive.

Founded in Finland, Wolt delivers from hundreds of restaurants in Copenhagen, as well as in other Danish cities including Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg and Aarhus.

Zadaa (EU only)

The Zadaa app is a great way of buying pre-loved designer clothes and accessories at bargain prices. You can find good deals on Nike, Burberry, Northface and Tommy Hilfiger clothes as well as even more upmarket brands, such as Gucci and Louis Vitton bags and belts.

There are also plenty of cheaper high-street labels such as Zara and Mango, as well as vintage bargains. The app is available in all the Scandinavian countries including Denmark, plus Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK.

Currency Converter Plus

This app is really useful for up-to-date conversion rates while you’re out and about in Denmark. Converting everything in your head can be exhausting and slow you down in stores, so this app is an easy solution when you want to know exactly how much things cost.

Just type in the word, phrase or location you desperately need to translate, and you can have it in Danish in an instant, and also hear the pronunciation – which is really useful since Danish is notoriously hard to pronounce (even the proper way to pronounce the popular tourist spot Nyhavn may surprise you).

An added plus is the recently added photo feature; simply use your phone to photograph menus, signs, or ingredient lists and the app will translate the text for you. Magic. Download Danish as an offline language so you can use the app even when you don’t have access to wifi.

Here are the most useful apps for life in Denmark, including banking, food delivery, and public transportation tickets.

Banking & Administrative Apps

MobilePay connects your bank account to your phone number, so you can pay and be paid as easily as sending a text. The app lets you send and request money to and from retailers and contacts. It’s the form of payment most commonly used at fleamarkets, and is the easiest way to buy road-side offerings like jam or potatoes when traveling through more rural areas. It also makes paying friends back for a round of drinks, or splitting a meal, much easier! Note: in order to use the MobilePay app, the app requires a Danish phone number and Danish bank account.

NemID Nøgleappp

Your NemID corresponds to your personal ID number (CPR) and uses unique number codes to give you access to your personal information across a number of services, including banking, tax, health info, and more. Because it needs a new code every time, it can get a little tiresome.

Enter: the NemID nøgleapp (key app). For the love of god, download this app if you haven’t already! It replaces your code card, switching between payments and logins to seamlessly grant access. An added bonus? It means you’ll never run out of codes .

Eboks is a digital mail platform used in Denmark for communication between government institutions and citizens. You’ll receive paychecks, letters from the hospital, and notices from the tax authority through it. By using the app, you’ll have access to these important documents wherever you go. The app is difficult to copy and paste from, so if you require a translation, desktop is best.

Betalingservice

If you’ve had to pay for services in Denmark, you’ve likely come into contact with a betalingskort . This is essentially an electronic invoice that can be paid by bank transfer. Until recently, they could only be paid via direct banking.

The Betalingservice app allows you to pay these quickly on your phone, and you can even use a credit card. It is possible to set up automatic payments. So easy! Be aware that there are some bills that are not payable via the app.

DOT Tickets

DOT, or Din Offentlige Transport, is a collaboration between the public transport operators DSB, Movia, and The Copenhagen Metro to create better and more coherent public transport on Zealand, Lolland, Falster and Møn.

The app allows you to easily buy metro, bus, intra-city and inter-city train tickets. This is super-useful if you’re on the run and realize you don’t have any cash on you, or forgot your transport card. If you’re traveling in more rural areas of Denmark, this app will be invaluable, as ticket stands aren’t always readily available. The app lets you buy a variety of tickets like a single journey, commuter card, or city pass, which stays safe on your phone. You can also pay to bring a bike along through DOT.

The best feature for those looking to explore the great Danish countryside is the ability to plot a journey by scrolling around a map with a pin showing your current location. Just tap where you want to go and DOT will find the route for you.

We’ve all been there: one glass of natural wine too many and loathe to push our bike to the nearest Metro station. Behold, Taxi EU! If you’ve arrived fresh from a country where Uber is rife, navigating the taxis in Copenhagen can be a little perplexing. This app makes it as easy to call a taxi as Carrie Bradshaw whistling one down on Broadway.

The app can be used to pre-book a taxi; great for early flights or busy festive periods. You can request a bike rack or even let your driver know you’ll be bringing an animal. You can also pay through the app or after the ride using cash, MobilePay, or your card.

Donkey Republic

If you find yourself with a flat bike tire, or are just in need of a bike for any reason, then Donkey Republic is a great app to have ready on your phone. The bike-share app lets you pick up bikes all around the city, and return them without having to find a docking station. The bikes themselves are great; bright orange so they’re easy to spot, lighter than the city bikes, all kitted out with lights and baskets, and each with their own unique name. Donkey Republic can be found in a few European cities, so it’s useful for traveling abroad too.

Rejseplanen

Getting from point A to point B has never been easier. Rejseplanen (trip planner) shows you the fastest routes to get where you’re going. The app includes metro, bus, and train. It also includes walking time and an additional map in- app, so it literally gets you from door to door. The app can be set to English.

If you’re planning to drive while in Denmark, the Easy Park app is for you. It allows you to pay for parking through the app and also shows you how much time you have on your ticket. The alarm will sound when you’re out of time and you can just re-purchase, making sure you never get a parking ticket again.

For buying tickets for international trains (e.g. to Sweden), as well as traffic information and anything you need to know about the Danish transport system, this app is a must-have.

A joint effort by the NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Company) and Norwegian Meteorological Institute, this weather app is easy to use and, most important of all, accurate. See what the next week will look like, what’s going on in cities near you, and precipitation graphs. The “sky” tab not only tells you the current weather, but beautifully illustrates it too.

Rainspotter

Rainspotter is a must-have app for anyone living in a city with transient weather. With its interactive radar map and handy rain graph, you can see exactly when and where the rain will hit. Plus, with notifications alerting you to incoming showers, you’ll never be caught off guard. No more wishing that you’d left 20 minutes earlier or later; this app is your trusty companion for staying ahead of the rain game!

Language Apps

Danish lessons are (currently) free if you live in Denmark with a CPR number and are over the age of 18. They’re an incredible resource and really help with making Denmark a home – you’ll often learn as much about Danish culture as you will the language.

If you want something to help you practice, however, or keep your Danish fresh during a break, Duolingo is a brilliant app. It’s free to use (though you can pay for an ad-free version), user-friendly, and helps expand your vocabulary. Be warned, once you start using it, it WILL send you endless guilt-inducing notifications such as, “Don’t you have five minutes to learn? We miss you!” if you stop using it regularly.

In the great debate of Babbel vs. Duolingo, which side do you come down on? Unlike Duolingo, Babbel is not free, so is it worth it? Babbel’s claim is that it not only helps with learning vocabulary and grammar of a new language, but also enables the student to engage in conversation of their new language. Reviews are fairly split; some people have found Babbel to be incredibly useful, while others think it’s no better than Duolingo and therefore not worth the subscription. If you want to give it a try, download the app and go through the first ten basic language lessons in the language of your choice; these first lessons are free! Enjoy it? Then you can subscribe. Not a fan? Well, now at least you know.

Google Translate

When you first move to Denmark, the Google Translate app will get a lot of airtime. While it’s great to have on desktop, it’s also useful to have on your phone for when you need to decipher an email or text quickly. The app version is easy to use and quite accurate (at least you’ll get the gist!).

News & Entertainment Apps

The newspaper of note in Denmark, Politiken is considered fairly center-left in its reporting and is acclaimed for everything from its news to its culture and food sections. This newspaper is only available in Danish and the app has a paywall.

DR News and DR Radio

DR is the Danish national station; think of them as the BBC of Denmark. They have both a television and radio app; both cover news, cultural programs, and more. DR Radio includes the station’s podcasts. Everything is in Danish.

TV2 is also a Danish-government owned entity, but unlike DR they do not receive government funding. Instead, they are funded through commercials. The TV2 Play app includes Danish shows, international shows (even reality television), and sports. This is a paid app.

Shopping Apps

Need some rain boots for your toddle, maternity clothes, or bikes for the kids? Reshopper is a secondhand marketplace for families, so the focus is on things for kids, from babies onwards. There’s also plenty of furniture and home goods. The app is in Danish, but you can message sellers in English if you see something you like.

Similar to Craigslist in the US or Gumtree in the UK, DBA (Den Blå Avis – the Blue Paper) is a classifieds platform for pretty much any and everything. If you’re into vintage furniture, for example, keep an eye on DBA for some of your wishlist items and you may just find them at incredible prices!

Health Apps

This is Denmark’s contact tracing app for COVID-19. If you’ve been exposed to, or tested positive for, COVID-19, this app can help you get the message out to those who you may have been in contact with. Apps like this are essential to stopping the spread of the virus.

This app is the portal for all your health information in Denmark. Since the system is centralized based on your personal ID number, you’ll get everything from test results to notes about appointments. Both the app and the desktop version of this platform are…not the easiest to navigate. But it’s well worth having, particularly for receiving test results.

Hate going to the dentist but know you need to take care of your teeth? Adent is a great solution in-between visits. You can track any symptoms, have digital consultations, and organize dental information for your whole family. Adent app that takes something for which most people procrastinate and makes it easy!

If you want to experience Copenhagen as the locals do (in an authentic fashion), download this app.  Spotted By Locals was created by local residents. You gain access to a map with points of interests in more than 66 European cities.  Download the app on your Android or iOS device and select Copenhagen from the list. There is no need for an internet connection.

7 Apps to Install for Easy Public Transportation in Denmark

You have arrived to Denmark and may already have been to your first class as an exchange student.

But now you are ready to explore Denmark and you might want to visit some of the awesome places in this beautiful country, but how will you get around on a student budget?

We will give you an insight on how to get around Denmark on a student budget!

Here we go!

1. Rejseplanen :

This app is vital to install as we have mentioned before!

You can enter your destination and your current location and the app will give you information on what buses and trains to take, when they departure and how much it will cost to reach your destination.

The app shows you the route in detail and you can see the pricing whether you use Rejsekort or purchase a single-ticket.

At some routes you can actually purchase the ticket directly from the app, which makes it super easy!

This app is useful for larger train routes in Denmark administrated by DSB.

It is easy to buy a ticket directly from the app and you can get the ticket and pay directly on your phone. DSB is running the larger and major routes connecting the bigger cities and areas across Denmark. However train ticket is rather expensive and we would recommend busses that is usually much cheaper.

If you need to take the train for whatever reason, you can for instance look for Orange billetter, which usually offers cheaper tickets during off-peak hours. Furthermore, students between 16-25 can get 25% off all tickets.

Be ware that this will require you to have a phone with an online connection and a charged battery during the entire journey.

3. Midttrafik

This app is only relevant for you, if you are located in the central part of Jutland. In here you can buy tickets for buses and trains administrated by Midttrafik directly on the app, and works similar to DSB.

Again, it can be pricy and alternatives such as GoMore or buses might be worth to check if you are on a budget.

4. Flixbus :

You probably already know about Flixbus, however these are worth to mention as they offer some of cheapest tickets to get around in Denmark by bus, especially for the longer distances.

For instance, you can take a bus from Aarhus - Copenhagen for 99 DKK , while a train DSB train ticket will start at 399 DKK. for the same trip.

You can buy the ticket directly in-app, so definitely an easy and cheap way of traveling!

Bonus: you can buy bus tickets to Germany and rest of Europe at a low price as well .

5. Kombardo expressen

‍ This app is similar to Flixbus, but are different in that they have routes that combine a bus and a ferry ride.

We can especially recommend it for trips from Aarhus – Copenhagen, as a ride on the ferry makes the travel a lot more comfortable.

Tickets are also from 99 DKK , so definitely a worth try! Tickets can be bought directly through the app as well, and you can take some luggage with you for free.

If you really love to socialize with Danish people (or be out of your comfort zone), then GoMore is absolutely for you !

GoMore is a platform where private people can post their car trips (like a car pool) and you can join the ride for a small fee.

This way of travel is awesome as it makes people to socialize much more and gives you a unique chance to talk with native Danish people.

You can pay directly in-app, so definitely an easy and cheap way of travel. Prices varies a lot as the price is set by the chauffeur.

7. Taxi apps

‍ Unfortunately, Uber is not available in Denmark because of legislation protecting cab drivers regulation.

But if you need a ride, there are several options.

If you ever need a ride in the Copenhagen area Taxa 4x35 currently have a good app that works very similar to Uber.

Additionally, Moove is also recommendable app for Taxi rides. In both apps, you can choose a journey with a fixed price. In general driving with taxa is quite expensive , so it is not that student friendly as other places in Europe.

How to get around Denmark with public transport

Public transport in Denmark is easy, fast and convenient. As a small country with hundreds of islands, there are myriad interconnecting transport routes by land, sea and air. Here's all you need to know about how to find your way around Denmark. 

How to get to Copenhagen from the airport?

The quickest route from the airport to Copenhagen is via regional train or Metro . It takes under 15 minutes to reach the city centre and you can buy the tickets you need at the airport: you need a 3-zone ticket that costs approximately DKK 36.

The train runs directly to Copenhagen Central Station (Hovedbanegård) in the centre of the city and is ideal if you are staying there or want to take a train onwards to other Danish cities. If you want to reach Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Osterbrø or other areas of Copenhagen, the metro is the best option.

You can also take bus 5A from the airport to reach the city centre in approximately 35 minutes, and there is a taxi rank outside Arrivals. Typically, taxis cost DKK 250-350 and take 20-30 minutes to reach the city centre.

By the way, did you know that Copenhagen Airport has been CO2 neutral since 2019?

Copenhagen's transport options

Public transport in Copenhagen  is inexpensive and easy to use . You can pay per journey in cash at a machine in a metro or train station or in person on a bus. Copenhagen is divided into zones, and fares depend on how many zones you are travelling through. 

The Copenhagen Card gives you unlimited public transport in the capital region of Denmark, plus free entry to over 80 museums and attractions. It is available for a 24, 48, 72 and 120-hour period, costing €54-133 for adults, with a version for children 10-15 years old costing less. Parents note: one adult can take two under 10s to museums and attractions for free and two under 12s on public transport for free.

You can also buy a City Pass , a digital travel ticket for unlimited public transport over a 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120-hour period, costing from DKK 80  for 24 hours for unlimited travel in Copenhagen zones 1-4, including the airport. There is a version for adults and another for children over 12. Buy online and remember to keep your phone charged.

Harbour bus

The harbour bus runs in both directions from Teglholm in the south to Refshaleøen in the north. These boats are operated by the same carrier as normal buses, and all ticket types are valid. It is a great way to see the city from the water and an efficient way to get from Nyhavn to Reffen in the summer. Since 2020, all harbour buses have run on green electricity.

Bike and electric scooter

It’s super easy to rent a bike from a local bike shop, pick up a Donkey rental bike on the street, or rent an electric scooter via an app. For more about bike rental and the city’s cycling rules , see this  bike guide . You can take a bike on the metro, but not during commuter hours (Mondays to Fridays, 7:00-9:00 and 15:30-17:30), and also on a regional train. For both, you must buy a ticket for yourself and your bike!

Getting around Denmark by public transport

The journey is the destination when you’re travelling around Denmark – if you want to travel car-free, you can choose from a reliable train, bus, ferry and boat network.

Train travel in Denmark

It's easy to travel by train beyond Copenhagen to the rest of Denmark. A train from Copenhagen to Aarhus will take three hours, to Aalborg four hours and to Odense an hour and a half. DSB is the official Danish national rail operator, and you can see train routes, find times and book train tickets on the  DSB website or by calling +45 70 13 14 15. Booking in advance, up to two months before travel, is advised – check the section ‘ DSB Orange’ for the best value off peak tickets on the train operator’s website. An adult can take two children under 12 on a train for free.

Trains also run from Denmark to Sweden from the main central station in Copenhagen, with Swedish rail company SJ . It takes under 40 minutes to reach Malmö and there are regular overnight trains as well as multiple daily options for the 5.5-hour direct trip to Stockholm. Book online at sj.se or buy a ticket in a station.

European citizens can buy a single country  InterRail Denmark Pass  offering unlimited train journeys up to 8 days a month; Denmark is also included in the InterRail Global Pass that allows access to train routes in 33 European countries, making a multi-stop Scandinavian trip easy. The Eurail Denmark Pass offers similar options for non-European citizens.

Coach Travel in Denmark

You can also travel by coach using Denmark’s extensive network of long-distance coach routes. Bus connections are operated by providers including  Eurolines Germany  and  FlixBus  with routes between Danish towns and cities as well as multiple cities in Europe.

Ferries in Denmark

As you'd expect from a country made up of so many islands, boats and ferries provide an essential service. It's also a refreshing way to travel.

Several major tour operators run ferry and cruise services to Denmark from other major European destinations, including Scandlines ,  Color Line ,  Fjord Line  and  Stena Line . DFDS operates a two-night cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo with overnight travel to Oslo, a day (6.5 hours) in the city and overnight travel back, among other routes.

Flying in Denmark

There are several daily flights from Copenhagen to cities around Denmark. For example,  SAS  have direct flights to  Aarhus ,  Aalborg  and  Billund , while  Norwegian  fly directly to Aalborg, Billund and  Karup .

Airlines such as  DAT  and Alsie Express  provide domestic and international flight services to smaller airports such as Bornholm, Odense, Esbjerg and Sønderborg.

There is also a seaplane connection between Aarhus and Copenhagen with Nordic Seaplanes , taking 45 minutes.

Dsb: national railway.

There are different types of trains, ranging from large inter-city expresses (lyntog) to smaller local trains (regionaltog). As a traveler, you can use InterRail/Eurail passes on all DSB trains and receive reduced rates on most private ones.

Trains in Copenhagen, or S-tog trains , cater to commuters. They run between 05:00 in the morning and 00:30 at night, with different frequencies depending on the line:

• Line F: 4-5 minutes
• Line A, B, C, E: 10 minutes
• Line H, Bx: 20 minutes

On Fridays and Saturdays, S-tog trains run once every hour from 01:00 to 05:00.

Metro and Light Rail

When you visit the Copenhagen area, you can also benefit from the Metro .

T ravel is about as easy as it's ever been. You can hop on a plane, go anywhere, find accommodations once you're there, and even hail a taxi with just a few clicks or taps. Prices can be quite reasonable as long as you're keeping your expectations in check. It's not unusual for folks to take a weekend trip somewhere for no reason other than to just get out of the house. Luckily, there are plenty of good travel apps for Android to help with planning.

A smartphone has plenty of utility in a space like this. You keep it on you all the time, even on airplanes, so it's not a bad place to store your itinerary. People are relying on their smartphones a lot more for travel compared to even just a few years ago. Apps for things like hotels and transportation booking have improved by a large amount over the last five years or so. Additionally, new tools have made their way to the market. 

In some cases, you may not even need an app. For instance, Google Travel is an aggregate website that includes flights, hotels, rentals, and discovery features for when you arrive in your destination city. Apps tend to be a little more reliable, though, so let's take a look at some good ones.

Airbnb is a popular travel app that lets you rent out establishments that are usually owned by real people. There are a few benefits to this approach. For starters, it's a vastly different experience than the same old hotel stay that we all know and tolerate. There are also a variety of properties available for rent in most regions, including cabins, beachfront properties, and other interesting accommodations. It's a nice way to spice up your trip without changing your itinerary too much. It's not a leap in logic to assume that a beach trip would be more fun in a beach house rather than a standard hotel.

However, there are some downsides to Airbnb. It's generally more expensive than a traditional hotel stay, especially if you go for something more exotic. For instance, we found a wonderful cabin in Ohio that costs over $700 per day to rent. That's a $2,100 weekend before taking any other expenses into consideration. Additionally, you can find the occasional horror story about owners and tenants causing drama. A little vigilance and some patience can help avoid such complications. 

There aren't many apps like Airbnb, although some are trying. They include Vrbo, Booking.com, Hipcamp, and a few others, but none are as established as Airbnb. The app is free to use, but rentals obviously cost money.

Citymapper is a unique app for travelers. It sources its map information from Google Maps, so you're not using something entirely different from what you'd normally use. Where Citymapper excels is in its depth of choice. Let's say you want to go from West Side Market to the Agora Theater in Cleveland, Ohio. Citymapper not only gives you directions but also gives you options for your transportation. You can walk, take the bus, rent a scooter, or hail a cab. There is built-in support for Uber, Lyft, and several other transportation companies for cab service and scooter rentals. There are even bus schedules to help plan your day around local transportation. 

Yes, it is possible to recreate a lot of this in Google Maps. However, Citymapper is built specifically for this function, so the layout of the app makes a little more sense for folks who don't often use these types of services. The only real downside of Citymapper is the lack of support for many U.S. cities. For example, in Ohio the app supports Cleveland but not Cincinnati or Columbus. That's a bit of an oversight, although there is always Google Maps to fall back on if you're somewhere without official Citymapper support. 

Citymapper is free to use with advertising. You can remove the advertising with a $1.49 per month subscription.

Google Maps

Google Maps is an excellent choice for obvious reasons. It features near-ubiquitous support for most places you'd want to go, a laundry list of features for all sorts of activities, and even competes favorably with Yelp for user reviews. It's a go-to, all-in-one solution that nullifies a lot of its competitors. You can even download maps for offline use if you expect to be out of range of an Internet connection. Otherwise, most people know how Google Maps works. You can get navigation to just about anywhere. There is also support for walking, public transportation, and more.

What makes Google Maps special are a lot of the smaller, less-used features . For example, you can share your location with a friend or family member. They can use Google Maps to find your location and get to you if needed. You can also adjust your routes to save gas and search for the cheapest gas near you. The gas station prices aren't always exactly current, but it gives you a good idea. It'll even show you the speed limit when used with Android Auto. Not every feature is supported everywhere, so your mileage may vary. 

Google Maps has a lot of competition in this space, such as Apple Maps. Some alternatives, like Maps.me and OsmAnd, use OpenStreetMap as a source, which can occasionally be more reliable than Google Maps and may also include some extra hiking trails or paths that Maps doesn't. Otherwise, Google Maps stands alone at the top.

Google Translate

Google Translate is another excellent app for travelers. After all, not everybody has the time or capability to learn a new foreign language for each trip they take. Google Translate is good at a number of things. You can easily type in whatever you want into the app and translate it to your language of choice. That's the main function, and it's perfectly usable in day-to-day applications. Other features, however, may see more use in practice, such as the ability of the app to take a picture of a menu or sign and translate it for you. 

Perhaps the most useful feature is the conversation mode. You simply choose the languages you want and speak into the app. The app uses speech-to-text to translate what you said so the other party can read it. They can then do the same in reverse. This lets you have full conversations with people who don't speak your language. You can also use the app offline provided that you downloaded the languages you need first. 

The great part about it is that it just works without much of a learning curve, so most people should be able to figure this out relatively quickly. Google Translate doesn't have a lot of competition. Microsoft Translator and DeepL Translate are making strides, but they aren't quite there yet. 

Kayak is one of many apps to book travel accommodations. It lets you search for flights, hotels, and rental cars for your trip, all within essentially the same experience. For flights, you input your start and end destinations and dates, which leads the app to pull up available flights. There is then a process that sorts them by the cheapest so you can find the best deals. Looking for hotels and rental cards is the same. You input your destination and dates, and the app tries to find you the best deals. 

There are some extras that make life a little easier. Kayak's app layout is functional and quite easy to read. Many competitors do this as well, but Kayak just has a good feel. Additionally, you can surf for alternative ideas like ridesharing for car rentals or vacation homes instead of hotel accommodations. There are plenty of filters to nail down exactly what you want. Booking accommodations through the app is a fairly simple process and not much different from most other apps.

Kayak has a ton of competitors in this space, including Priceline, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, and at least a couple dozen others. Choosing one is a lot like choosing a grocery store -- different services have different sales at different times. You should use the one that saves you the most money at the time you plan your trip. 

Polarsteps is a travel tracker app, although it is more recreational than it is functional. The app lets you plan your trip and then log the trip as you take it. You can store things like photos, notes, and other memories along your journey. The app shows you all of those memories on a neat world map. It's an overall nice way to visualize your trip after you're done taking it. In addition, you can share your trip with family and friends so they can keep track of you as you progress while commenting on your photos and memories. 

The app works quite well in practice. Photos and other content upload quickly, and the social elements are done well. The only real downside of the app is that it is for recreational purposes only. You can't manage an itinerary, book hotels, or do any actual planning with Polarsteps. This is only for capturing memories.

Polarsteps also gives you the option of ordering a travel book with memories of your travels. You can also revisit old trips through the app if you decide to keep it for multiple trips. Polarsteps is free to use. You only have to spend money on the travel book if you want it. 

There are many apps that do variations of this same thing. FindPenguins is an up-and-coming app in this space that does a lot of the same stuff as Polarsteps. 

TripIt is an all-in-one travel planner. It starts by having you create a trip in the app. From there, you add in your itinerary, travel plans, and other information. Everything is manual, so you don't have to worry about syncing anything. You can enter everything from flight numbers to hotel reservation confirmation numbers. There is also an alerts system for reminders about those flights and hotel reservations. It's a nice overall package that takes most types of travel into consideration. The app has a clean look, and it shouldn't take long to get the gist of how everything works.

There are a variety of other features as well. You can store travel documents like passports, Visas, and driver's licenses. There are whole sections for alternate modes of transportation such as cruise ships, trains, and public transportation. The navigation feature integrates directly with Google Maps for easy storage of your road trip directions. Those who opt for the optional $48.99 per year subscription also get access to a point tracker for your loyalty programs as well as an Inner Circle feature to invite other people to plan trips with you.

Like other travel apps, this one has a lot of competition. RoadTrippers, Passporter, and TripCase are a few decent examples. TripIt does the job better and with less hassle than most of its competitors, so it's a great place to start. 

Uber is a must for travelers. It's ubiquitous in the U.S. at least, and almost everybody knows how to use it. It's a ridesharing service that operates similarly to a taxi service -- you hire a driver to take you from point A to point B. There's a rating system for both passengers and drivers to keep everyone honest. 

Otherwise, it's a fairly straightforward endeavor. The app is easy to use, and you can schedule rides for the future if needed as well. At this point, Uber has been around long enough that most people have used it at least once. There aren't many surprises here. 

Uber has consolidated a lot of its functions within its main app. That means you can order food and have it delivered to your location without using the Uber Eats app. There are also options for pharmacy, alcohol, retail, and grocery delivery. You can even have a driver deliver a package from your location to its destination if you need it there quickly and don't mind paying extra for it. Rounding out the features is a car rental service partnership with Hertz that allows you to rent a car if you prefer. 

Uber has competition all around the world. Lyft is its biggest competitor and it's good as a ridesharing service. Other countries may have services specific to that location. You'll want to do some research if you're traveling abroad. 

Vio is a hotel deal comparison app. Earlier, we talked about Kayak and how it had tons of competitors in this space. Vio, and apps like it, aggregate prices from many of those places so you can price shop across services in a single spot. The app shows you the best deal it was able to find, even if that deal wasn't directly from Vio, by sourcing prices from over 100 travel sites. The app also boasts millions of hotel options around the world. Pair that with a solid UI that doesn't feel overly cluttered, and you have an app that ends up feeling easy to use. 

All you have to do is input your destination city to start browsing. Once you find a hotel you like, you can view more details within the app. From there, there are two things that can happen. You can continue booking the hotel from the app if the deal is directly from Vio. Otherwise, the app throws you to the other service to complete the process. For example, if you find a good deal using Booking.com, the app will send you to that website so you can claim it. 

There are a variety of services that do something similar. Trivago is another popular option for comparing hotel prices, and you can use either one as they both work about the same and compare the same data. 

Wanderlog is a travel planner app. It offers an all-in-one solution to essentially the entire experience. You can plan the trip by inputting your various reservations, itineraries, and other plans. The app keeps track of everything for easy recall later. In addition, Wanderlog has a ton of little extras that can help make things easier. 

For instance, you can compare hotel and flight prices. There is also a collaboration feature that is available for free. You can add people to your trip so they can see all of the information as well. It might seem a bit cluttered at first but it gets easier the more you use it. 

In general, Wanderlog is easy to use. There are a lot of distracting elements as the app sends you deals and coupons for various travel-related services. Some of those are genuinely useful, so it's not the biggest deal. The app requires an internet connection to use if you're on the free version. You can get offline support along with Google Maps support, fewer restrictions, and even more deals for an optional $39.99 per month. The subscription isn't necessary unless you intend on using the app very heavily.

What makes this app unique is that it's a mix between an aggregator service like Vio and a travel planner like TripIt. You can find this same experience across two or three apps if you want to.
