Nottingham - an introduction

The obvious associations with Robin Hood aside, vibrant, trendy Nottingham presents one of the most fantastic shopping scenes in the UK and is bursting at the designer seams with quality bars and eateries. The city is compact and foot friendly, although the sleek tram system will show you the delights if you fancy a more effortless option.

In addition to the art of shopping, Nottingham has six galleries of cultural interest. The Galleries of Justice in Lace Market are well recommended, a former courthouse and place of capital punishment boasting the largest collection of Police memorabilia in the UK and showcasing evidence from the Great Train Robbery trial. Nottingham Castle, once home to the legendary Sheriff of Nottingham, is another must on a coach trip to the city. The 17th century Ducal Palace has a museum and gallery that cover over 2,000 years of regional history, and is usually on itineraries as an included excursion. Meanwhile, contemporary art can be found at the Angel Row Gallery, while there is bound to be something on at the Royal Centre having hosted big names like the Bolshoi Ballet.

A break to Nottingham wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Robin Hood Visitor Centre. Walk through Sherwood Forest, the amazingly beautiful 450-acre realm where Robin Hood was alleged to have resided and view the Major Oak (the tree in which Robin is alleged to have hidden) at Edwinstowe.

Accommodation for Nottingham breaks by coach is typically in the city or somewhere in the local area like Derby. Breaks include return coach travel, transfers into the city if staying in the outside area, breakfast and in some cases dinner, and one or two excursions.

Heart Of England

There's a lot to see and do on a coach trip to Nottingham. Here is our run down of the top few:

Sherwood Forest No trip to Nottingham would be complete without a trip to Sherwood Forest which has been  made famous by tails of Robin Hood. Each year in August, the Robin Hood Festival is held in celebration of the life of the world's most famous outlaw.

Wollaton Hall and Park Built between 1580 and 1588, Wollaton Hall is now a prominent Grade I listed building. Located three miles west of Nottingham City Centre, this magnificent house is situated in 500 acres of spectacular gardens and parkland. The Hall was used as Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman Film 'The Dark Knight Rises' and if you fancy being a bit daring on Sundays you can Segway around the grounds!

Galleries of Justice This fascinating attraction delves into England's Crime and Punishment history. Through use of actors, audio guides, guide sheets, lighting, costumes and sounds the attraction's sole aim is to entertain and educate. Join a tour where the Sheriff of Nottingham places Robin Hood on trial. This attraction isn't for the faint-hearted!

Green's Mill Located in a restored 19 th  century windmill, Green's Mill is a small Science Centre celebrating the life and scientific flare of mathematician and physicist George Green. Inside the centre you can discover the remarkable achievements by George Green and his experiments with light, electricity and magnetism amongst other things.

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Nottingham, please take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

Health and Travel Insurance  Travel insurance is recommended by all our tour operators and for some operators it is a condition of booking. When choosing a travel insurance please ensure it fully covers all your personal requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses, and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. As a British citizen you will obviously be entitled to free emergency health care on the NHS.

If you are visiting England from outside the United Kingdom and fall ill or are involved in an accident and are from an EU country or Switzerland, you can use a valid EHIC issued by your home country to access healthcare. Please note this is not an alternative to travel insurance.  Comprehensive travel insurance is advised for nationalities planning on visiting the UK.

For the latest information and travel advice regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19), please click  here

If you need to contact the emergency services whilst in the UK simply dial 999 or 112 to ask for an ambulance.

Crime  The United Kingdom is a safe place to visit, however, as with all countries please exercise common sense. Petty crime can occur so take your usual precautions such as not leaving luggage unattended, beware of pickpockets in tourist areas and leave valuables in the hotel safe.

Local Laws and Customs  Queuing is a British Institution - jump a queue at your own risk!

If you are visiting from outside of the United Kingdom, it is wise to check customs requirements before you travel. If you are planning to bring alcohol, tobacco or souvenirs into the country, you need to be familiar with the UK's custom laws. If you go over your allowances, you may have to pay tax or duty. It is worth checking the  HM Revenues and Customs website  before you travel.

UK Entry Requirements  When travelling between the UK, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man you may need to show a Border Force officer a document confirming your identity. In most cases an official form of identification such as a driver's license or an armed forces identity card will be ok. However, some airlines will insist you show a passport so please check before you travel.

If you’re from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein you can enter the UK with one of the following identity documents: a passport, an Irish passport card or a national identity card issued by an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, if you’re eligible to use one. The identity document should be valid for the whole of your stay.

If you’re from outside the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you must have a valid passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay. You may also need a visa, depending on which country you’re from. Please check  here  if a visa is required before you travel.

Not only is it one of England's top 3 retail centres, but Nottingham's Old Market Square is the largest in the country at 5.5 acres!

Nottingham Castle was originally built in the 11th century by the Normans, and it has a long and varied history. It has served as a royal palace, a military stronghold, and a prison, and it has played a significant role in the history of the city and the country. The castle is located on a high cliff overlooking the city of Nottingham, and it has commanding views of the surrounding area. It is built of sandstone and has several notable features, including a moat, a gatehouse, and several towers. Nottingham Castle is known for its association with the legend of Robin Hood, who is said to have lived in the surrounding forest and robbed from the rich to give to the poor. The castle is often depicted as the home of the Sheriff of Nottingham, who was the enemy of Robin Hood in the legend. The castle has undergone a few renovations and restorations over the years, and it has a mix of architectural styles. The castle's interiors have been restored to reflect different periods in its history, and they include a number of exhibits and displays about the castle's past. The City of Caves

The City of Caves is an underground network of caves located in Nottingham and offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the hidden history of the city. The City of Caves is a collection of man-made caves, excavated out of sandstone, which date back to the medieval period. The caves were used for a variety of purposes throughout history, including as a tannery, a public house, and as a bomb shelter during World War II. The caves also served as a home for Nottingham's poorest citizens, known as "cave dwellers", in the 19th century. Visitors to the City of Caves can explore the different levels of the caves and discover the different uses that the caves have had throughout history. The City of Caves is also home to a number of interactive exhibits, including a replica medieval tannery, where visitors can see how leather was made in the past. Wollaton Hall

Wollaton Hall is a breath-taking Tudor-style mansion located in the city of Nottingham, England. The building is a Grade I listed and a major tourist attraction in the city. The hall was designed by the architect Robert Smythson, who was known for his work on other notable houses of the period. The history of the hall is rich, serving as a family home, a hospital during World War II, and now it is a museum with beautiful galleries, displaying the Natural History and Industrial heritage of the region. One of the most striking features of Wollaton Hall is its architecture. The grand exterior of the building is made of local Ancaster Stone and features intricate carvings, chimneys, and towers. Inside, the hall boasts a Great Hall, Library, Dining Room, and other state rooms that are lavishly decorated with carvings, plasterwork, and tapestries.

The abbey was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1536 as part of the Suppression of the Lesser Monasteries, and the monastic buildings were dismantled. The site was later purchased by Sir John Byron, who converted the remaining buildings into a country house.

Newstead Abbey is a large and impressive building, with a mix of architectural styles ranging from Norman to Gothic. The main architectural style is Gothic. It is surrounded by formal gardens and parkland, and it has a few notable features, including a cloister, a chapel, and a library. 5 ideas for coach trips from nottingham with national express.

Please note the following blog post has been written as part of a paid collaboration with National Express. All opinions are my own.

With the increase in domestic travel in the UK, people are looking to travel closer to home now more than ever. But travelling in the UK doesn’t just involve having to drive or spend money on petrol or expensive train fares.

As travel reopens in the UK, I was recently invited to explore the UK with National Express to discover how easy it is to travel by coach in the UK. Coach travel is a great, affordable way to get around the country, visit family, explore new cities and save money.

So if you’re hoping to plan a budget UK day trip or getaway, coach day trips are a great way to do that.

National Express runs coach services all over the UK and if you’re based in the East Midlands, here are a few ideas for coach trips from Nottingham with National Express.

Benefits of travelling by coach in the UK with National Express

national express coach travel.jpeg

  • Easy for those unable to drive or who don’t have a car
  • You’re guaranteed a seat
  • No booking fees if you sign up and book when you create an account
  • Two suitcases up to 20kg and a piece of hand luggage are included in your ticket
  • Booster seats for children and wheelchair lifts available on most services
  • Great for those who don’t want to worry about having a designated driver on a trip
  • Avoids expensive city car parking fees
  • Ticket prices are very affordable (and much cheaper than UK train fares!)
  • Lots of flexible routes and times to suit you
  • Quick and easy, you can just sit back and enjoy a book, music, movie etc without worrying about the drive
  • Travel by coach is the most environmentally friendly form of transport and produces up to 5x less CO2 per passenger than the average car journey
  • The average fleet age is 3 years old and all coaches are fitted with leather seats, air conditioning, toilets and plug sockets so you can travel comfortably

I found my while trip with National Express incredibly straightforward both booking online and on the coach itself. It was so reassuring to not only see the additional measures they had put in place to ensure safety and hygiene but also comforting to know that I had my ticket ready, I didn't have to worry about finding parking at my destination and my luggage was included in the ticket price.

All the staff were so helpful and the drivers explained the temperature testing before boarding as well as helping myself and other passengers with luggage.

Plus I love the added bonus that I can get work done on the coach journey and then watch a movie on the way home when I'm too tired to work!

Steps that National Express is taking to ensure high cleanliness and hygiene standards

Of course using public transportation is a concern for some people at the moment but National Express have put extra measures in place to ensure passenger safety and to meet government guidelines.

I felt completely safe and comfortable during the entire journey and was really happy with the additional measures put in place.

Face coverings are required on all journeys

Temperature screening prior to boarding

Hand sanitiser is available for all passengers to use

Enhanced cleaning procedures with antiviral cleaning solutions

Additional filters fitted which block 99% of airborne particulates and improve air quality

Drivers wearing protective equipment

You can read more about their safety measures here.

Nottingham attacks: Watch as judge gives triple killer hospital order

This video can not be played

This was the moment a judge sentenced a man for killing three people in separate attacks in Nottingham.

Valdo Calocane - who killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates on 13 June - will be detained at a high-security hospital after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Mr Justice Turner told Calocane he remained a danger, and added: "Your sickening crimes both shocked the nation and wrecked the lives of your surviving victims and the families of them all."

Killer of 3 in English city of Nottingham sentenced to high-security hospital, likely for life

LONDON (AP) — A 32-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia who fatally stabbed two college students and a man in the central English city of Nottingham was told Thursday that he would “most probably” spend the rest of his life in a high-security medical facility.

The sentencing of Valdo Calocane followed three days of hearings at which relatives of the victims and three other people he tried to run heard how he had been on the radar of authorities for years and was wanted by police at the time of the attack.

Family members slammed the verdict, local mental health services and the whole legal process, arguing that Calocane should have been tried for murder, rather than for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility as a result of his mental illness.

Doctors had argued that Calocane felt he was being controlled by external influences and that his family were in danger if he didn’t obey the voices in his head. As a result, prosecutors concluded “after very careful analysis of the evidence” that he could forward a defense for manslaughter.

In his sentencing, Justice Mark Turner said Calocane had “deliberately and mercilessly” stabbed students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in the early hours of June 13 last year.

Satisfied that Calocane was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, the judge said the killer would “very probably” spend the rest of his life detained in high-security Ashworth Hospital in Liverpool, where he has been since November, rather than prison.

“Your sickening crimes both shocked the nation and wrecked the lives of your surviving victims and the families of them all,” he added.

Calocane repeatedly stabbed Webber and O’Malley-Kumar as they walked home around dawn after celebrating the end of exams at the University of Nottingham, where they had both excelled, particularly on the sports field.

Soon after, Calocane encountered school caretaker Ian Coates, who was months away from retirement. Caolcane stabbed Coates and stole his van. He then ran down three people in the streets before he was stopped by police. Calocane, who had formerly been a student at the university, admitted to three counts of attempted murder relating to the pedestrians he deliberately targeted.

At the time of his rampage, Calocane was wanted by police for failing to appear in court for assaulting an officer nine months earlier, on one of several occasions when police had taken him to a mental hospital.

At the doorsteps of the courthouse surrounded by friends of the victims, Barnaby’s mother, Emma Webber, said “there’s a very good chance our beautiful boy would be alive today” police had done their jobs ”properly.”

She singled out Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin of the Nottinghamshire police for having had “blood on your hands” for failing to detain Calocane after the arrest warrant was issued.

She also criticized prosecutors, arguing that the families had been railroaded last November into accepting their decision to not try Calocane for murder.

“At no point during the previous five-and-a-half-months were we given any indication that this could conclude in anything other than murder,” she said. “We trusted in our system, foolishly as it turns out.”

She said the bereaved did not dispute the fact that Calocane had been “mentally unwell” for years but that the “pre-mediated planning, the collection of lethal weapons, hiding in the shadows and brutality of the attacks are that of an individual who knew exactly what he was doing. He knew entirely that it was wrong but he did it anyway.”

The son of Ian Coates, James Coates, also slammed the verdict as well as how Calocane was able to enter a plea of manslaughter.

“This man has made a mockery of the system and he has got away with murder,” he said outside the courthouse.

Sylvia Hui in London also contributed to this article.
