The cruise industry is enormous, bringing in billions of dollars annually. This can be seen in the wide variety of cruise lines operating worldwide, including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and even Disney.

Unlike with other types of travel, cruise ships' luggage requirements are much more lenient.

Let’s look at cruise luggage policies, the items you can bring and how much luggage you can take on a cruise.

Are you an overpacker? Don’t worry; a lot of us are. While airlines may nickel and dime you for every pound or bag you pack, cruise lines are more relaxed. So, how many suitcases can you take on a cruise?

The policies for cruise luggage size and weight will vary depending on with whom you’re sailing.

For example, Royal Caribbean’s baggage policy is quite flexible: There is no restriction on the number of bags you can bring or the total weight allowance. However, its website recommends limiting your total quantity of luggage for comfort and convenience because you’ll have to haul it around.

The same can’t be said for Norwegian Cruise Line, which sets a limit on the weight and number of bags you can bring. On Norwegian, guests can bring two pieces of checked luggage weighing up to 48 pounds (22 kilograms) each. This limit is similar to the one often imposed by airlines for checked bags.

In short, how many bags you can take on a cruise will depend heavily on your cruise line. Some have no limits, while others restrict the number of bags and set weight limits.

Before packing, check with whichever cruise line you’re sailing to ensure you have the latest information.

Cruises are fairly liberal when it comes to items you’re allowed to bring . Almost everything you can think of — including personal-use aerosol items, hair dryers and snacks — is permitted.

There are restrictions on certain items, including weapons, perishable food and certain kinds of beverages. All bags usually go through an X-ray machine before you board to make sure there are no restricted items.

Can you bring alcohol on a cruise?

Cruise lines tend to be a bit tetchy when it comes to bringing your own alcohol on board.

Norwegian Cruise Line prohibits you from bringing any drinks on board. In contrast, Holland America allows passengers to bring wine and Champagne but charges a $20 corkage fee per bottle.

The Disney Cruise Line lets guests 21 and older bring two bottles of wine or six beers on board for no fee, with the ability to buy more at each port of call. This is a great way to avoid the upcharges of buying alcohol on the ship.

Can you bring liquids on a cruise?

Packing luggage for cruises can be freeing, especially if you’re used to flying with limited liquids.

Happily for travelers, liquids are generally allowed on cruises if they’re to be used for grooming. This includes full-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, gel, sunscreen and more.

You may also be allowed to bring some nonalcoholic beverages, though this policy will depend on your cruise line.

You have choices when it comes to checking your bags on a cruise.

Usually, you can check your large luggage during boarding, and it will be delivered to your stateroom. However, that can take a few hours, so you’ll want to keep carry-on luggage that includes items such as a swimsuit and sunscreen with you.

You’ll also want to keep any important paperwork, electronics and medication in your carry-on bag rather than sending that off to be checked.

Having your luggage sent to your room is not required. If you’d rather keep it with you, that is an option.

However, your stateroom is generally unavailable for several hours after boarding, so you’ll need to carry your luggage around on the ship — and that can be highly inconvenient.

Like with the boarding process, you can check your luggage or carry it with you during disembarkation.

On the final night of your cruise, you’ll be given luggage tags. You can then leave your bags outside your stateroom and have them delivered to the port for pickup in the morning.

If you choose this route, keep whatever you’ll need for the next morning in your carry-on because you won’t have access to your checked bags after they’re picked up.

Keeping your luggage with you when getting off the ship can be faster because you won’t need to wait to collect your bags after you disembark.

By now, we’ve answered the question of how many bags you can bring on a cruise, but the short of it is this: Individual limits are set per cruise line, so you’ll want to do your research before you start packing.

This is true of the quantity and weight of your bags and the specific types of items you can bring on board.

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to bring no more than two bags to check as well as luggage to keep on hand. Other than that, most items are allowed on board, though you should always double-check for items such as alcohol and nonalcoholic beverages.

Are you going on a cruise and wondering about the cruise luggage restrictions, guidelines and baggage rules? Cruises are very different than going on a plane, and what you can and cannot bring when boarding a cruise is different too.

In this post, I go over the cruise luggage limits, guidelines for baggage weight and size, and go through some frequently asked questions that cruise passengers may have.

Cruise Line Luggage Policies, Baggage Size & Weight Limits

How Much Luggage Can I Bring on a Cruise?

Cruise lines aren’t very strict about how much luggage you can bring, however they do have some suggestions and guidelines. A good rule of thumb is to pack 1-2 pieces of luggage per person, with a maximum weight of 50 lbs or 22.5 kg.

A carry-on bag for embarkation day is recommended. Remember to your carry-on bag or backpack with your cruise essentials for the day, medications, valuables and travel documents.

Something to note is that it can be tempting to overpack for a cruise, especially if you enjoy dressing up for dinners and formal nights . However, many cruise ships have a self serve laundrette or laundry services at an additional charge that you can use, if needed.

If you’re trying to pack light for your cruise , you can rewear and repurpose some clothing as well, and no one will notice!

Some cruise lines have specific luggage limits posted on their website:

• Norwegian Cruise Line

The luggage allowance for Norwegian Cruise Line is two pieces of checked luggage with a 50-pound maximum each, per passenger. Luggage should be clearly labelled with your name, address and contact number.

NCL suggests bringing a small carry-on bag or backpack when boarding, as can take a few hours after embarkation for your luggage to be delivered to your stateroom. This bag should also be used for the last night of your cruise, when luggage is collected before disembarkation .

• Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line suggests the following:

• 3-5 day cruises: maximum one bag per passenger
• 6 days and longer: maximum 2 suitcases per passenger

According to the Carnival website , “each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 50 pounds, and when lying flat, bags must not exceed 16 inches high by 24 inches wide (the length of the bag is not a factor). For security screening purposes, all luggage should be unlocked. Oversized luggage and locked luggage may cause delivery delays.”

Large coolers are not permitted onboard Carnival cruise ships. However, you can bring small quantities of soda in small, personal-sized cooler bags, no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises does not impose luggage or weight limit. However they do point out that “many domestic airline carriers now impose excess baggage fees for one or more bags and bags weighing over 50 lbs.” and advise cruise passengers to check with your carrier regarding weight restrictions.

• Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean advises that each passenger “is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take. Each guest has the option to carry their luggage on board or check-in luggage prior to boarding. Luggage may include suitcases, trunks, valises, satchels, bags, hangers containing clothing, toiletries and similar items.”

MSC Cruises

If you’re cruising with MSC, the cruise line posts the following luggage allowance per person:

• two suitcases per person (maximum size 90x75x43 cm and 23 kg in weight per piece of luggage)
• two pieces of hand luggage per person (maximum size 56x45x25 cm in size and 23 kg in weight per bag).

No matter which cruise line you are sailing with, it’s a good idea to keep the number of bags you bring with to 1-2 suitcases a person, 1 piece of carry on luggage (a backpack or tote bag is fine), and a personal bag (ie. purse). Always check the airline restrictions.

Prohibited Items on a Cruise

There are some items that guests are not permitted to bring onto a cruise ship. While each cruise line has their own list of prohibited items, there are some things that you are not allowed to bring on any cruise ship.

These include anything that is dangerous, can start a fire, or that may be illegal in some countries and ports of call.

Prohibited items on cruise ships include:

• weapons and sharp objects (including knives)
• irons and clothes steamers
• candles (or items with open flames)
• surge protected power bars
• drugs (including cannibus products)
• Liquor (most cruise lines)

Please note that most cruise lines do not allow you to bring liquor onboard, however a bottle of wine per person is often permitted on a cruise .

Hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons are allowed. You may also bring a non-surge protected power bar .

Cruise Luggage Tags

Once you complete your online check in for your cruise, you’ll be able to print your luggage tags. You can print as many as you need and follow instructions to fold and staple the tags to your suitcases.

Many cruisers prefer to purchase reusable luggage tag holders , which can be securely attached to each piece of luggage.

Can you carry your own luggage on a cruise.

You can carry on your luggage onto a cruise ship, however you’ll only want to do so if you are packing relatively light.

The size of your carry on luggage must be able to fit through x-ray screening machines, as there are security checks as your enter the cruise terminal before boarding your cruise ship. The size of the x-ray  screening machines are similar to the ones you’ll find at airports.

Depending on the time you board your cruise ship on embarkation day, you may not be able to go to your cabin to drop off your luggage right away. Having a small carry-on bag and/or personal bag will be manageable, but having many pieces of luggage would be difficult.

Are There Baggage Fees on a Cruise?

Thankfully there are no baggage fees or additional charges on cruises at this time. Most cruise lines have suggestions for how much luggage to bring for a cruise, however we have never seen these allowances being monitored or enforced.

That being said, you do want to be careful when flying to and from your cruise port. Most airline carriers have strict luggage allowances and will change for excess baggage and weight or luggage.

Tip: Pack an electronic luggage scale for your cruise , to ensure your luggage is not overweight.

How Much Should I Tip Porters at the Cruise Terminal?

Tipping luggage porters at the cruise terminal is not mandatory. However it is customary to give a small tip per bag.

The amount will vary based on your discretion, however many cruise passengers say they tip between $1-5 per bag. It’s a good idea to have some small bills ready as you approach the cruise terminal luggage drop-off zone.

Something to note is that luggage porters work for the cruise port terminal, and not the cruise line.

What Should I Pack in my Carry-on Bag?

It’s important to pack a few essentials in a small carry-on bag for your embarkation day, as it can take several hours to get your luggage delivered to your cabin.

Some items you may want to pack in your hand luggage include:

• swimsuit and cover up for the pool deck
• personal items and/or make up to freshen up
• medications
• any valuables and electronic items

Thank you for posting this. I was rather curious because there are four of us in a balcony room and someone is going to have to sleep up there. I have seen adult-sized people on them in some videos posted online, but always wondered what they were designed for! Now we know!!

At least they won't be able to use the weight limit to decide who sleeps up there! lol

NCL often goofs up their signage. There are some photos of goofy signs on the Breakaway that apparently were not proof-read. 100's of millions for a ship and they don't spend a few bucks to make sure the signs are accurate. Cheapens the image.

We Americans often underestimate our weight, so when someone thinks he's 300, he's really 320.

Is it comfortable? I will be on one of those on my upcoming cruise.

15 Must-Know Things About Norwegian’s Go-Kart Track at Sea

When Norwegian Cruise Lines debuted the first racetrack at sea with go-karts, it made big news. Even now a few years later, the speedways continue to be one of the more popular attractions on a cruise ship. They are also a perfect example of the kind of strides that today’s ships are making in entertainment while at sea.

If you’re about to sail on a Norwegian ship with one of the tracks, then you’re likely interested in some more details about the go-kart and what you can expect. We recently tried the racetrack at sea for ourselves and here is everything you need to know…

Go-kart Tracks Are Available on the Bliss and Joy

Will your ship have the racetrack? As of now, only two ships have the tracks at sea: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy. These are NCL’s largest and newest ships. Given the popularity of the track, we could envision future ships being built with the track or older ships being refurbished to add the speedway. For now, however, only those lucky cruisers on these newer ships get to enjoy the experience.

The Laps Take About 30 Seconds

As you’d expect on a racetrack on a ship, the course isn’t that long. It only takes about 30 seconds to make a lap. That said, the layout is well-designed. In a compact space the track packs a lot in, including a ton of corners, twists and turns. It’s also a double-decker track, with a hill climb right at the start and a downhill section at the end to bring you back to the start/finish line.

One-Seaters and Two-Seaters Are Available

Want to drive with a smaller child? Or maybe you just want to share the experience with someone? You don’t have to drive alone. While most riders decide to drive a single cart, you can ride with two people in a double go-kart.

The Carts Are Electric with Gas Engine Sounds

With cruise ships trying to more “green” you might be wondering about fuel for the go-karts. They are actually electric and don’t emit exhaust as they zoom around the track. To help add to the ambiance, there are engine noises emitted by the cars to make them sounds like they are real race cars. It’s a little funny at first but really does make it feel like you are going faster.

Rides Cost $15 Per Person (Unlimited Passes Are Available)

If there is one bad thing about the racetrack on Norwegian, it’s that the activity isn’t free. In fact, it can be a bit pricey. While prices can change at anytime, as we go to press you’ll pay $15 per person for your turn on the track. Want to go three times during your trip? That’s $45. There are unlimited passes available that allow you to go the entire length of your trip. We’ve seen prices quoted around $200 for a week-long cruise.

Be Dressed for Racing

Due to safety concerns, you need to be dress appropriately to race the cars. That means closed-toe shoes. As well, you don’t want to wear anything loose or baggy that might catch on the wheels, such as a scarf or an open jacket. Also be sure to leave your bags in the room or with someone watching your race. There are no lockers available to store your bags while you drive.

There Are Height Requirements

If you want to drive alone, then you need to be at least 55 inches tall (4′ 7″). The good news is that there aren’t age requirements. As long as you are tall enough, you can drive. Note that some websites showing the minimum height of 48 inches, but on the ship it was in fact listed as 55 inches to drive alone. Smaller riders can go with larger drivers to also enjoy the track.

Reservations Are Highly Recommended

The racetrack is by far one of the most popular parts of the ship. While your cruise may be different, we’d highly suggest making some reservations for your spot the instant you get on the ship. You can reserve a spot via your stateroom television. You could also try to reserve during days in port when many people are off the ship (if the track is open during this time).

You May Not Go Fast… But It Feels Fast

We’ll be honest, you don’t go that fast in absolute terms in the carts. We’ve seen reports of up to 30-40 mph, but having raced on the ship firsthand, that’s not the case. We’d estimate you go more 10-15 mph. While that may not sound fast, given how low to the ground you drive and the number of curves, it really feels much faster. There are definite times when you have to let off the gas to make a corner cleanly. Bottom line, you won’t be disappointed with the speed.

Rides Last About 10 Minutes

The rides go by pretty quick. If you’re waiting in line, that’s a good thing. If you’re racing, you want it to last forever. We’d estimate that a turn takes about 10 minutes long. For $15, that’s not very long, but it is still a fun time. To be honest, racing any longer than that and the minimum wait would be unbearable.

A Helmet and Helmet Sock Are Provided For You

When you ride, you must wear a helmet. A helmet with a visor is provided to you, as is a helmet sock. The sock fits over your head like a thin ski mask. They are only worn once and then washed for the next person. This helps to keep things cleaner instead of people’s bare heads touching the actual helmet.

The Power Is Controlled by the Staff

You might be hoping you get a face car when you race. The speed of the cars is actually dependent on the staff. In fact, when you first start on the track you’ll be disappointed with the speed out of the gates and climbing the hill. It’s not until all the cars are on the track that the power is turned up and you can really start to drive quickly. As well, if there are any incidents on the track or when it’s time to pit at the end of the race, your speed will be cut.

The “Turbo” Button Doesn’t Do Anything

On the car’s steering wheel there is a beautiful button that says it’s a turbo boost. Don’t get your hopes up. We were told by the staff that it actually doesn’t do anything. We also tested it personally and there was no extra boost provided by it.

Getting Stuck Behind People Is an Issue

If there is one complaint about the racetrack on Norwegian, it’s that you can get stuck behind slow drivers. Given the turns and the width of the track, finding a spot to pass can be tough. If someone is going slow around the track, you could be going at a turtle’s pace behind them until things open up for passing.

Racing Is a Lot of Fun… You Should Do It at Least Once

It’s understandable if you don’t want to spend the extra money to take a ride on the carts. For instance, a family of four would spend $60 for about 10 minutes of entertainment. That’s a steep price to pay. Still, after having done the carts ourselves, we suggest that everyone take at least one turn. During our cruise it turned out to be one of the highlights of the entire trip and something we’ll remember for a long time.

Can guests bring their own D.O.T.-approved helmets instead of those publicly-worn?

I doubt that’s ever come up. There’s no real reason to bring your own helmet that we can think of.

What is the Weight limit for this event

Don’t know of any weight limit, but you must be 55″ to drive alone.

Can you pre-pay for the unlimited week pass or do you have to do that on the ship? I heard there was a limit as to how many unlimited passes they sell??

Do you have to reserve the go-kart spot or can u just get in a line? also is there a limit to how many time you can reserve the spot?

You should reserve a time if you can. If it’s full up, or you just forget, just head there and hopefully they can work you in. Sometimes people reserve and then don’t show up.

Is there a weight limit on the go-carts?

Not that we know of. We saw height minimums, but no age or weight restrictions.

Cruise passenger falls overboard while ship sails through fjord: officials

A cruise passenger went overboard while the ship was sailing through a fjord in Norway early Thursday, Norwegian officials said. 

A rescue operation was carried out near the country’s Sognefjorden, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, around 3:30 a.m. local time after a man went overboard from MSC Cruises’ MSC Euribia ship, HRS Southern Norway rescue service said in a statement posted to social media. 

The agency said a helicopter took the passenger to a hospital and no one else was missing in the incident. 

HRS Southern Norway didn’t give an update on the passenger’s condition.

The incident happened near Flam, a village in southwest Norway during a seven-night cruise that left from Germany, according to Cruise Hive, a cruising news site.

The outlet reported that the ship had planned to dock all day Thursday in Flam.

The ship reportedly stopped a little more than 50 miles west-northwest of Flam after the man went overboard, and turned around.

No other details about how the man fell off the ship have been revealed. 

The outlet said the ship has mainly stayed on schedule despite the incident, and is expected to arrive back in Kiel, Germany, on Saturday. 

Fox News Digital has reached out to MSC Cruises and the Norwegian Central Rescue Service.

Another MSC Euribia passenger went overboard in March after the 23-year-old messaged his wife that he felt seasick after the ship had left Southamption, England. 

"A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on 16 March as the ship was sailing to Hamburg," MCS Cruises told FOX Business at the time. "This was reported to the authorities. The police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information."

General aqua park, water slide, and dry slide safety rules:.

• No lifeguard on duty.
• No running, jumping, or diving are permitted in the water slide or aqua park areas.
• No beverages, food or glass are permitted.
• Children in nappies or who are not toilet trained are not allowed on water slides or in the aqua park.
• Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Is norwegian cruise line the cheapest cruise line stock.

When it comes to cruise line stocks it seems as if Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH) is the Rodney Dangerfield of the shipyard. It can't seem to get any respect. The shares are trading just 9% higher over the past year, compared to larger rivals Carnival Corp.  and Royal Caribbean Cruises  rising 31% and 75%, respectively, in that time.

The disparity gets even wider between the leader and bleeder if we take a longer view. Royal Caribbean shares are up 56% over the past three years. Norwegian has been nearly cut in half.

There's still a lot to like in the laggard. Norwegian Cruise Line has its flaws, but it's also trading a lot cheaper than its competitors. If you believe that the rising tide in popularity for the cruising business will lift all fleets, it's time to consider the bargain that Norwegian offers for investors given the lofty valuations found elsewhere.

Coasting in the sun's direction

All three of the major cruise line operators suffered tremendous hardship when the COVID-19 outbreak shuttered operations four years ago. They have all recovered. All three cruise line stocks checked in with record bookings and customer deposits in their latest quarters, so the near-term outlook for the industry has never been more lucrative.

Passengers are back, and they're willing to pay more for their water adventures than they were before the pandemic. This is great news for all operators, but investors seem to be only chasing the two largest players. The irony here is that Carnival and Royal Caribbean aren't necessarily expensive stocks. Norwegian is just that much cheaper. Let's check out the P/E ratios based on what analysts see the three players earning this year and in 2025.

The valuations for the entire industry are pretty compelling. All three of the leading seafarers are trading at forward earnings multiples of 16 or less, dropping to the pre-teens or less if you look out to next year. Norwegian is just fetching a much lower ratio. The valuation gets even more tempting if you look out to 2026.

Norwegian hosted its 2024 Investor Day two weeks ago. It was a strong presentation. The cruise line operator boosted the guidance it had issued just three weeks earlier in a poorly received quarterly report. It cleaned up nicely for its investor presentation, and it also turned heads by initiating guidance for 2026. The company hopes to score an adjusted profit of $2.45 a share in two years. Pull up a stock quote today, and you are buying the cruise line for just 7 times what it's hoping to earn in 2026.

It's not always a pleasure cruise

Cruise line operators had to take on gobs of new debt and issue new shares in 2020 and 2021 when they were unable to fully operate their ships. One can argue that the multiples are low because the enterprise values are much higher than the debt-saddled market cap. It's a fair knock. Norwegian's market cap of $7.4 billion is a tiny raft compared to its $21.2 billion enterprise value. The 2026 P/E ratio of 7 expands to 20 if you switch out the market cap numerator with Norwegian's enterprise value.

It does get better. Now that the cruise line operators are profitable on a trailing basis with large sums of free cash flow expected in the future, Norwegian and its larger peers should be able to pay down their chunky debt loads back to historic levels. It wouldn't be a surprise if Norwegian's balance sheet is a lot cleaner in a couple of years.

It's easy to dismiss the distant bronze medalist. Carnival is the top dog, cashing in on the scalability that comes with being the industry leader as the mass market player. Royal Caribbean has historically been the operator with the best margins and growth prospects, explaining why it has outperformed both Carnival and Norwegian in the past.

Investors still shouldn't sleep on Norwegian Cruise Line. Its outlook continues to strengthen with every passing quarter. Analysts continue to inch their profit targets higher, and that should remain the case based on the buoyant state of booked reservations for the balance of this year and into 2025. Buying the basket of industry stocks is a smart way to play the recovery of the cruise line operators, but don't dismiss Norwegian as the forgotten port bargain.

Bunk bead weight limit and size of couch bed

We have 4 adults sleeping on one room. 2 older teens and 2 adults. Is there a weight limit on the bunk and what size bed does the couch pull out to?

Which ship & category(s) of stateroom with the pullout bed ?

Dropdown or pullman bunk bed - adults have been sleeping on them, I don't recall reading or checking about a specific weight limit (they are single size just like the 2 "main" beds that combined to form a Queen bed ... I believe they should be fine for 200 lbs easily, probably closer to 250 lbs.

We are staying on the Escape Mini Suite, category M6.

Okay, that will be fine then if that was the weight limit. I was concerned as they are adult size and not a little kid sleeping put there.

Escape mini-suite are similar to Getaway & Breakaway with a convertible sofa/daybed, setup as a single bed - foam mattress is same as the ones used for the 2 main beds, at a lowered height for seating purposes during the day. It has 2 large sliding drawer underneath - one of which is usually used to store the comforter, sheets, pillows for the bed.

The dropdown bed (recessed/stored above in the ceiling) also use the same size mattress, etc. Both of these are adult sized. Room steward should be able to find & provide extra foam topper if desired.

Being one of the newest, the bedside lamps have an USB port, good for charging devices - not fast charging but good enough for newer iPads & iPhones, etc.

We have used the bunk beds for our adult kids numerous tines. Most recently in May. One weighs close to 200 the other 160. I'm thinking 250 would be the limit.

The weight limit is printed on the side of the bunk. I would call NCL and ask to be sure. But if my memory serves me correctly, I believe the weight limit is more than 200 lbs. But not much more.
