The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most popular and stunning regions, located only 172 miles (277 kilometers) from Rome . It can be found in the region of Campania, just south of Naples and not too far from Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius . Travelers can take a train or bus straight to Salerno or drive to the town of Amalfi along the winding road through the Ferriere Valley.

The Amalfi Coast is made up of many different towns , so having a car may be useful if you plan to explore, but there's also an easy-to-use bus system that runs frequently and services many of the towns on the tourist route. There are several options to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome if you don't want to drive yourself, such as taking the bus or train. The train ride to Amalfi from Rome is often much faster than driving.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

The absolute cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is to take the Marino Bus , which makes the journey comfortably in four hours (from €13).

The earlier you book, the less expensive your bus (and train) tickets will be for getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast—especially in summer.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

For not much more than the cost of the regional train, you can take a direct high-speed train from Roma Termini to Stazione Salerno, run by Trenitalia or Italo. The prices and schedule are roughly the same. The fastest trip is two hours for €30. You can find cheaper trains for around €14 (three to four hours).

Trains run directly between the two stations from early morning until late at night. You could also take a train to Naples and then make a connection in Salerno, which may be worth a stop for a quick lunch—especially if you've never tasted Neapolitan-style pizza before.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The roads in Amalfi are famously winding and narrow in places, especially the SS163, the Amalfi Coast road which connects the main coastal towns and offers iconic views along the way. This three-hour, 30-minute route may be difficult for a non-local driver to traverse easily—especially getting out of Rome.

However, you may want a car if you're staying in one of the Amalfi Coast's small villages. To drive from Rome, take the A24 Autostrada to the E45. When figuring out your budget, don't forget to factor in the cost of tolls, gas, and parking.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to the Amalfi Coast?

Summers on the Amalfi Coast can be extremely hot and especially crowded as visitors flock to the beaches. If you're going in summer, advance booking is a must, in particular for hotels. If you'd rather visit at a quieter time , you should plan a trip for the spring or fall, particularly in the months of May or September when the temperatures are still pretty warm and hotel rates are on the cheaper side. If you really want a car to get around the coast, you could also take the train to Sorrento , then pick up a rental car there. Note that Rome to Sorrento is a train + bus; there is no direct train. The drive between Sorrento and Salerno is undoubtedly one of the most stunning in Europe, but it does require nerves of steel. The narrow road zigzags along the coast for 50 miles (80 kilometers) as it precariously clings to cliffs high above the sea, with low or non-existent guardrails between you and the rocks ​below. The views are spectacular, but if you're driving, you'll have to be sure to keep your eye on the road instead of the scenery. 

What Is There to Do on the Amalfi Coast?

After you've made the journey from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, you need to see it properly. Try to visit all the villages and towns that make up the coastline, from Salerno to Positano , Praiano, Amalfi , and everywhere in between. In these towns, you'll find some of the best hotels and restaurants the region has to offer. You should also make time to get a nice long day at the beach or, for something different, you can go for a hike in the mountains. This is one of the best ways to get far away from the crowds, while taking in some unique views of the coastline that most tourists don't get to see. The hike down to Fiordo di Furore from Agerola is particularly picturesque, winding past ruins, churches, and finishing at a quiet inlet that even has a small beach.

From Rome To Naples To the Amalfi Coast by Train

If you’re planning to visit the Amalfi Coast, one of your options is to take a train from Rome to Naples. At the main Roman train station (Stazione di Roma Termini) you’ll find more than one train per hour that will take you to Naples in an hour and a half.

The main train companies that provide this service are Trenitalia and Italo train. Tickets range from €17 to €70 (one way), but they are cheaper if you book in advance!

Once in Naples, you can reach the Amalfi Coast and, more specifically, Sorrento by catching the local train (Circumvesuviana) paying only €3 or €4. Get this train right at the Naples Centrale station. 

From Rome To Salerno To the Amalfi Coast by Boat

At the Roma Termini train station, jump on a train to Salerno. The company providing this service is Trenitalia, and the trip lasts two hours. Prices can vary and range from €30 to €70, depending on the time of your booking.

Once in Salerno, reaching the Amalfi Coast is simple. From the Piazza Concordia in Salerno, you can find boats that will take you to Amalfi in 35 minutes at just €8 only. Usually, there is one departure every hour, but the timetable might change, so be sure to check before going there.

From Rome To Salerno To the Amalfi Coast by Bus

From Salerno, you can opt for the bus instead of the boat to reach the Amalfi Coast. Departing from Rome, you can always find a train at Roma Termini train station that will get you to Salerno, where you will catch the bus to Amalfi.

In Salerno, head to the bus stop located in Via Vinciprova. The trip to Amalfi takes just over an hour. There are several buses departing throughout the day, either from Salerno or from Amalfi, and tickets cost €10 and are valid for 24 hours. 

From Rome To the Amalfi Coast by Car

If you’re a confident driver and like the idea of a bit more freedom, you could rent a car in Rome and drive directly to the Amalfi Coast. There are several places in Rome where you can rent a car, the most convenient may be at the Roma Termini train station. Car prices can vary and they usually depend on how in advance you book.

In a little over three hours, you’ll reach the coast. If you are afraid to miss trains and want to feel free to leave at any time, this may be the best option for you. Just keep in mind that Amalfi Coast roads are pretty small, so opt for a smaller car instead of a big one!

From Rome To Pompei To the Amalfi Coast with a Tour

How to Get from Rome to Amalfi Coast – By Train, Car, Bus & Ferry

With no direct trains or other connections linking the capital of Rome to the beautiful Amalfi Coast , getting between the two popular destinations can be a little bit complicated at first glance. 

Despite the approximately 173 miles (278 km) in distance, thankfully there are still plenty of options for visitors including cars, trains, busses, ferries, or a combination of them all. That means that you can easily pick the option to suit your budget, time restraints, and comfort levels. 

Here is a quick rundown of all the best options, I will explain them all in more detail throughout the post: 

• Drive from Rome to Amalfi Coast 
• Train to Naples or Salerno + ferry to Amalfi (summer only)
• Train to Salerno + bus or transfer to Amalfi 
• Bus from Rome to Amalfi Coast

Now, let’s have a look at all your options in more detail. 

1. How to Get from Rome to Amalfi Coast by Car

While renting a car and road-tripping around Italy with an epic itinerary is generally an amazing way to travel the country, the drive along the Amalfi Coast may be the exception. 

The narrow, winding roads travel atop steep cliffs and through tiny villages where the tiny streets can be super hard to navigate. Plus, finding parking is quite difficult and expensive , so I don’t recommend this option unless you are very experienced with driving in Italy . 

If you do choose to drive, the route will take you between 3-4 hours depending on the traffic. Note that in the peak summer months (July-September), the roads become jam-packed and traffic jams can be a nightmare!

• Flexibility in travel times 
• Freedom to make stops along the way 
• Handy to have a car to help you get around the coast

Cons:  

• Expensive 
• Long driving time 
• Hard to find parking 
• Traffic 

2. How to Get from Rome to Amalfi Coast by Train

Although there are no direct connections from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, you still have plenty of options for traveling by train. All routes begin by taking a direct fast train from Rome to either Naples or Salerno, from there you can connect by regional train, bus, or ferry. 

The best way to travel is by taking a direct train to either Naples or Salerno and then hopping on board a ferry to the Amalfi Coast . 

Note that ferries don’t run all year round so take this into consideration before booking (you can read more about that below).

Train from Rome to Naples or Salerno

The first leg of your journey by train is to take a high-speed train from Rome to either Naples or Salerno . From either destination, you will have a number of transfer options that I will go over next, so which you choose generally depends on your preference for ongoing travel. 

The train to Naples leaves from Rome Termini Station and takes around 1 hour and 15 mins to complete the journey. Italo and Trenitalia both run these trains multiple times per day. 

Alternatively, the train to Salerno leaves from both Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina stations taking around 2 hours to reach its destination. You will be taking a Trenitalia train if you choose this option. 

If you book your trains in advance, tickets are pretty affordable, however for budget travelers you can also opt for the bus from Rome to Naples which takes around 2 hours and 45 mins. 

Train from Salerno to Vietri sul Mare

If you wish to complete the whole journey by train, you will be a little limited on where to stay on the Amalfi Coast , but it’s not entirely impossible. 

Vietri sul Mare is the only Amalfi town with a train station . So after taking a high-speed train from Rome to Salerno, you can hop on a local train here. 

However, Vietri sul Mare is located on the eastern boundary of the region, just 4 minutes from Salerno , so you won’t actually get very far and will need to take a taxi or local bus if you want to explore the other towns.   

Bus from Naples or Salerno to Amalfi Town

If you choose to take a bus for your onward travel to the Amalfi Coast, it’s best to take the direct train to Salerno . If you are starting in Naples, you will need to take a Flixbus to Salerno for around 1 hour and 40 minutes before you can hop on the local bus. 

From Salerno, there are local buses that travel to the different villages of the Amalfi Coast daily . The SITA busses leave from the Via Vinciprova bus stop and take around 1 hour to travel to Amalfi Town, leaving every 30 – 60 mins.

While the ferry is the easiest option during summer, if you are traveling out of season , the bus is your next most flexible choice (aside from private transfers of course). However, this is not a good option if you have a lot of luggage as there is no dedicated luggage storage on the local busses , meaning you will most likely need to travel with it between your legs. 

3. How to Get to Amalfi Coast from Rome by Ferry

Ferries run between Naples and Salerno to Amalfi every day from April to October . This means that you will still need to first either take a train or drive from Rome (see above for details). 

It’s also important to note that the ferries do not run in winter, so if visiting out of season you will need to take a bus or private transfer instead. 

You can’t take a car on any of the ferries but you can take your luggage onboard. But know that you will be charged a luggage fee of around €2 per large piece .

Ferries from Salerno

There are many ferries that run daily from Salerno to the Amalfi Coast between 8:20 a.m. and 6 p.m. The trip takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour depending if you board a fast or slow boat. 

With 3 companies ( NLG, Positano Jet, and Travelmar) servicing the route, there are around 11 crossings per day meaning it is faster and easier to travel from Salerno as it has more frequent departures than Naples . 

The easiest port to take the ferry from is Piazza Concordia which is directly across from the train station, however, boats also leave from Molo Manfredi which is around a 20-minute walk if it’s more convenient for you. 

The major stops on the route are Amalfi and Positano , but some ferries also serve the smaller towns of Minori and Maiori.

Ferries from Naples 

The ferry from Naples to the Amalfi Coast takes around 1 hour 45 mins to 3 hours to make the crossing and is operated by NLG and Alilauro .

Ferries run from 8:30 am to 4 pm departing from the Molo Beverello pier which is a 10-minute walk from the train station. 

Best Way to Get from Rome to Amalfi Coast with Kids

Traveling in Italy with kids generally means finding the easiest and most efficient way to get from place to place, and getting from Rome to the Amalfi coast is no exception. 

The best way to travel to the Amalfi Coast with kids is to either take the train or drive to Salerno, then connect with a fast ferry to Amalfi. 

With just two simple connections, minimal walking (as the port is right opposite the train station), and the quickest travel time, it’s very simple, even if you’re traveling with a baby . 

Taking the train + ferry option means you can be eating the traditional Italian cuisine of the fresh Amalfi region in just 2.5 hours !

Route One: Rome to Amalfi Coast via public land transport

Italy has a great public transport system, which tourists use to their advantage in traveling around this fine country. You can take a bus, direct, intercity, or regional train from almost any major city to get to another. However, getting to Amalfi Coast from Rome will involve a fair bit of moving around, as you’ll need to transfer from bus to train.

Rome to Naples by train

Let’s say you get off at the airport in Ciampino or the more popular Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. Your ideal starting location in Rome is the Roma Termini Train Station, Italy’s largest train station and a notable stop for numerous direct and regional lines, where you can take high-speed trains to Napoli Centrale station in Naples. Two main train companies offer this type of transport: Trenitalia and Italo Trains.

They are very close in terms of price for train tickets and comfort, so you can pick one that suits your schedule best. But if you want to experience the fastest high-speed train in the country, you can book a seat on Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains. 

How much does it cost, and how long would it take to get from Rome to Naples by direct train?

Travel time between these two cities ranges from 55 minutes to an hour and thirty-six minutes. Prices for train tickets range from €14 to €71 for both regular direct and high-speed train rides. Trains usually run throughout the day and early into the night, so consider that when planning your travel. As usual, we recommend that you purchase your train tickets in advance. 

Naples to Sorrento by train

Once you arrive at Napoli Centrale, walk to the nearby Naples Garibaldi Station. Descend to the lower levels and ask for the Circumvesuviana line or Porta Nolana to Sorrento, which is your next destination. Circumvesuviana has regional trains with multiple stops, and their schedules go between 5:57 am and 9:33 pm . Ticket prices range from €5 to €8. Travel time from Naples to Sorrento takes about one hour. You can also take the Campania Express trains, which have air conditioning and are more spacious and comfortable, but tickets can cost up to €15. 

Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi by bus

Once at Sorrento, you can have your pick of preferred travel arrangements. The first and most economical step is taking a SITA bus to Positano, arguably one of the most beautiful communes along the Amalfi Coast. Positano is high up on the coast, and you can stand on the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. You can purchase tickets at a ticket booth in the Circumvesuviana station and find the stop for the SITA bus nearby at Piazza Giovanni Battista De Curtis. Just look for the bus stop signs. Also — and this is crucial — you must purchase bus tickets from the ticket booth at the train station. Tickets cannot be purchased online or on the bus itself. 

The buses often leave town full, sometimes with passengers standing along the aisles. We recommend getting seats on the right-hand side of the bus if you can manage it to enjoy the view on the way. Travel time from Sorrento to Positano takes about an hour. You can also purchase tickets that will take you directly to the town of Amalfi, and the travel time will take about 90 minutes. 

Naples to Amalfi by direct bus

There is also an option to take a bus straight from Naples to Amalfi, but the route doesn’t go through the Amalfi Coast itself. Instead, you’ll have to go around the mountains and through the very end of the coast, limiting your sights and potential stopovers. You can find more information about this trip here .

How to know if this option is for you

Taking trains and public buses from Rome to Amalfi Coast is by far one of the cheapest ways to travel. Of course, the savings come with the trade-off of being less comfortable and possibly more inconvenient. There are a lot of trains leaving from Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale, but they do run on tight schedules. Some train companies also offer different levels of service. For example, Campania Express trains from Naples to Sorrento are more suited for families with children, as they tend to be more comfortable. They offer guaranteed seating, air-conditioned cars, and baggage spaces. For that reason, they’re more expensive than other regional trains. They also have fewer stops along the way. 

There is also the issue of crowds. Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale are tourist attractions in their own right, so expect a lot of people there, especially during rush hour and peak seasons. As mentioned before, SITA buses from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast also tend to be overcrowded, especially during the mornings and summer months. 

Route Two: Rome to Amalfi Coast by car

Not everyone likes public transportation, and going to Amalfi Coast by car is a great choice for people with more resources. You can schedule the trip whenever you want and take the time to stop and see the sights along the way. It also offers more flexibility, but, as said, it comes with a price. 

Rome to Naples by train (again)

Having a lot of money to burn on your trip to the Amalfi Coast doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider saving a few euros on easy choices. Case in point: taking a direct train ride (again) from Romana Termini train station to Napoli Centrale will help you cut down on effort, time, and costs.

Once you’re in Naples, you can then explore your options for getting to the Amalfi Coast by car. Directions to Amalfi Coast

You can take the A3 Autostrada and follow the signs leading to Salerno/Reggio Calabria. Stay on the highway until you reach the town of Vietri sul Mare. This town is a tourist attraction in its own right, but it’s mostly known as the entrance to the Amalfi Coast and a strategic transportation hub. Once in town, exit the highway and make your way to the SS163, also known as the Amalfi Coastal Road or the Amalfi Drive. It’s about 50 km along winding roads offering picturesque sea views. You can take the time to explore the smaller charming communes along the way, like Cetara, Maiori, Minori, and Atrani. Then you can stop at Positano or Amalfi town itself, depending on your preference.

Get there on your own time

Depending on your options, you can go on a day trip or drive around at night, which is something that public transportation cannot match with any degree of flexibility. 

The choice to stop for scenic views

You can’t just tell bus drivers to stop so you can take a picture of the beautiful sunrise on the azure horizon. Going to the Amalfi Coast in your own car allows you to make stops whenever convenient or needed, giving you time to stretch your legs, take in the sights of the coast, and rest for a quick coffee or snack. 

Exploring places off the beaten track

In connection to the previous topic, driving to the Amalfi Coast allows you to take the roads less traveled and explore places like the Bay of Ieranto or the Furore Fjord. There are quite a few hidden gems in this part of southern Italy, all waiting to be explored.

The Amalfi Drive giveth, and the Amalfi Drive taketh away. Here are the most notable disadvantages of driving to the coast. 

Road congestion

Since you’ll be starting in Naples, you’ll experience first-hand just how much traffic an Italian city street can have. This isn’t just limited to Naples, though; coastal towns like Positano have narrow streets, busy areas, and tons of pedestrian traffic. You or your hired driver will have to navigate your what through all that on your way to the Amalfi Coast. 

The twisting and narrow SS163

The Strada Statale 163 Amalfitana is carved along the sheer cliff face of the Amalfi Coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It offers a great view but hugs the cliffs too closely in some places, resulting in narrow sections, steep inclines, blind curves, and sharp turns. Inexperienced and first-time drivers are in for a hell of a time on the SS163, so don’t even try it if you fall under those categories — especially at night.  

Unpredictable road conditions

Like any passage near a cliff or mountain, rock slides can sometimes cause blockages on Amalfi Drive. These can result in time-consuming diversions up or around the mountain roads. There are also a few places with potholes and uneven surfaces, making navigating without prior experience very challenging. 

Restrictive availability and cost of parking

You certainly wouldn’t be the only one driving from Rome and Naples to the Amalfi Coast, I can tell you that much. Since the place is a tourist hotspot, you can expect difficulty getting parking spaces in Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, and all the other smaller towns, since most of them are designed for foot traffic. Parking several blocks away from your intended destination is not unheard of, and so is paying extravagant parking fees. 

Route Three: Rome to Amalfi Coast via train and ferry

Direct trains, regional trains, buses, rental cars, or a car of your own — there are many ways to get from Rome to the Amalfi coast using land-based transportation options. But if you want to enjoy the full view of the Tyrrhenian Sea while on your way to Amalfi Coast, getting a ferry ride is one of the best ways to do so. 

Rome to Naples by train (yet again)

Well, here we are again, talking about trains and train stations. Roma Termini, Napoli Centrale, you know the drill. It’s the same process as the last two routes and a great testament to how well-connected popular places in Italy are by intercity trains. 

Direct ferry from Naples to Amalfi Coast

Straight ferry crossings from the Naples harbor to Amalfi Coast are available during peak seasons, from April to the end of October. These seasonal routes are operated by Navigazione Libera del Golfo (NLG) and Alilauro. You can find both ferry and cruise ships in Molo Beverello, Naples’ main port. 

The ride usually takes one and a half to two hours, depending on weather conditions and specific routes, and the price range is between €25 to €28.50. This is a practical option for your Rome to Amalfi Coast excursion, but they are not always available. 

Naples to Sorrento, then to Amalfi Coast

A more season-friendly option is taking a train from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento, then getting on a ferry in Marina Piccola, Sorrento’s main port and one of the most important maritime drop-offs in the region of Campania.

Signing up for a tour of the coast is by far the easiest and most stress-free option available to tourists. All your travel arrangements are made for you (whether it’s land- or sea-based, or both), everything is scheduled, most of them include meals and snacks, and all you need to worry about is showing up on time. Most tours have their own buses and transportation set up to pick you up directly from your hotel room door. We highly suggest you consider this option if it’s within your means.

Traveling from Rome to Amalfi may be difficult on your first few visits, but once you get used to the process and have familiarized yourself with the transportation options, you can make the trip without too much issue.

Unfortunately, there are no direct trains or buses from Rome to Amalfi. It may sound like a hassle, but you can circumvent most of the inconvenience if you check your schedules and plan accordingly or follow the travel routes above. There are also a lot of popular destinations along the way, giving you opportunities to stop and rest or maybe stay for a night or two. There are about 173 miles (278km) between Rome and Amalfi Coast; as you can expect, it may take a few hours to get there. 

Here are a few general guidelines for traveling to Amalfi Coast. All these things apply whether you’re taking the local train, ferry, or SITA bus. Book your tickets in advance. Always, always check if it’s possible to buy tickets before arrival. This goes for any mode of public transport in Italy and perhaps all over the world. It just makes perfect sense, and it takes out a lot of hassle in your travels. If not possible, remember that not all transportation options allow the purchase of tickets during the ride. Check your schedules. Though not usual, train, bus, and ferry schedules are subject to change depending on factors like passenger count and weather conditions. Confirm your schedules online or call your transport provider’s customer service number for more details.  Arrive early. Be there at least an hour before the ferry, train, or bus starts to take in passengers. You’ll need time to look for the right gates, go through security checks, and have a few minutes to settle. Pack light, but pack wisely . Don’t overburden yourself with too much luggage for a short trip, but do remember to bring protection like sunglasses, sunscreen, or jackets as required. You might also consider taking emergency medication for motion sickness and other travel-related issues.

Ferry From Naples to Amalfi Coast

You’ll witness magnificent views on the ferry from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. The trip from Naples to Amalfi town takes approximately one and a half hours and costs around €25.

There are up to five ferries daily, but it is important to note that ferries only travel through the Gulf of Naples from April to October.

Bus From Naples to Amalfi Coast

Traveling between Naples and the Amalfi Coast by bus is tricky since there are no direct buses between the two destinations. 

The easiest (but slowest) way to get to the Amalfi Coast by bus is by taking a bus from Naples or Rome to Sorrento . From there, you can take the ferry, a car, or the public SITA bus to your final destination on the Amalfi Coast. 

The bus ride from Naples to Sorrento lasts about an hour and forty minutes and will cost between €7 and €16 with the Flixbus company. From there the SITA local bus journey takes another 45 minutes to Positano and 1.5 hours to Amalfi. Note – these are local buses and are not equipped with large spaces for luggage.

Local Train From Naples to Amalfi

There are no direct train routes from Naples to the Amalfi Coast towns. You can travel as far as Naples or Salerno by train and then you will need to organize a transfer or catch the ferry or bus to your final destination on the Amalfi Coast.

How to Get to Amalfi Coast From Salerno

Traveling from Salerno to the Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly easier than traveling from Naples.  This is because you can hop on the public SITA bus from Salerno to your Amalfi Coast town and arrive in about seventy-five minutes. Of course, there are other forms of public transport, like the ferry and trains.

Private Driver From Salerno to Amalfi Coast

A private driver from Salerno to Amalfi will ensure the last leg of your journey is nothing short of comfortable. Drivers are usually fairly flexible in their pick-up locations but most often depart from the airport , ferry port, and Salerno’s main train station.

You can expect prices at around €200 for two people.

Ferry From Salerno to Amalfi Coast

The ferry ride from Salerno to Amalfi town lasts approximately thirty minutes, and tickets range from €10 to €20. If you don’t struggle with seasickness, the ferry ride is pleasant and scenic.

Ferries from Salerno to Positano run up to fourteen times per week depending on the season. Rides on standard ferries last between one hour to one and a half hours. The high-speed ferry takes only 35 minutes to reach Positano. Tickets for this route are about €17.

Direct Bus From Salerno to Amalfi Coast

Take the public SITA bus in Salerno and arrive at Amalfi town in just over one hour. This bus stops at several villages along the way, including Atrani and Vietri Sul Mare. SITA buses run every thirty to sixty minutes. 

Drive From Rome to Amalfi Coast

Driving to the Amalfi Coast from Rome is not recommended for tourists as the route along the coast can be hard to navigate. Two beloved destinations in Italy, in this post, I’ll be listing the 4 best ways to visit. 

Both are ideal places for your Italy bucket list . Use this travel guide to help plan your trip to Italy . 

Quick Rome geography  

Feel free to skip this part if you’re familiar with Italy’s geography. If not, carry on reading. 

Rome is the capital of Italy and is located in Lazio, a region in central Italy. Further south is the Amalfi Coast. The picturesque coastline stretches around 50km (31mi) and is filled with pretty towns like Sorrento and plenty of scenic views. 

Though Rome is technically in central Italy, it, and the Amalfi Coast, are considered as part of southern Italy.  

How far is the Amalfi Coast from Rome?

The distance between the Amalfi Coast from Rome is around 279km (173mi).

4 best ways to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast 

Rome to the amalfi coast by car .

There’s nothing more enjoyable than taking a road trip in Italy . The journey from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is long but the scenery more than makes up for it. 

If renting a car , it approximately takes around 3hrs and 40mins to drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. This isn’t factoring in any service station breaks, traffic or roadworks along the way.  

Once you’ve made it out of Rome, the main highway that leads south towards Naples is the A1.   After Naples, you need to take the exit that leads to highway E45 for the Amalfi Coast. Continue until you see the exit for the SP2b local road. After a series of winding curves and a drive through some hilly terrain you’ll eventually reach your destination. 

Speaking from personal experience, reaching the Amalfi Coast by car is the best way to explore the area. Driving around the Amalfi Coast does present challenges but ultimately, it’s more convenient and gives you more flexibility. 

Places to visit from Rome to the Amalfi Coast 

Unless you plan to head straight to the Amalfi Coast, you may want to detour on your Italy road trip .

There are several places of interest to visit from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, some known and others less so.  

The following places are located near to or around the A1 highway. It should make it easier to get back on course for your Rome to Amalfi Coast trip.  

Head to the ancient town of Tivoli just outside Rome. Visit Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), Villa d’Este and enjoy the scenic views of the hills and Lazio countryside. This combined entry ticket gets you into both villas. 

Montecassino

A medieval monastery 520m (1706ft) on a hilltop in Cassino, Lazio, the location was an important battleground during World War II. 

Sant’Angelo in Formis

Home to an ancient Benedictine monastery, the building site dates to the 8th century. A remarkable blend of Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles, it’s a beautiful find in the town of Capua. 

The city, about 40km (25mi) north of Naples, is best known for being home to the Royal Palace of Caserta ( Reggia di Caserta ). A UNESCO World Heritage Site , it’s often compared to the Palace of Versailles  due to its Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. 

The home of Neapolitan-style pizza, incredible churches and a championship football team, consider spending a day or 2 in Naples. 

The former Ancient Roman city buried under ash and volcanic debris, which today are well-preserved ruins, is unmissable. Visiting Pompeii from Rome is another straightforward journey. Save time when you visit Pompeii by booking your tickets in advance .

Rome to the Amalfi Coast by train 

Trains in Italy , for the most part, are a reliable and scenic way to travel across the country.  

Personally, I find train travel in Italy to be quite affordable. Of course, every situation is different, and my travel circumstance will be different to yours.  

More complicated 

While there is a Rome to Amalfi Coast train, it’s not as straightforward as visiting by car. The closest (main) train station is Salerno and from here you still need to take a bus to reach the coast.  

The length and duration of your journey all depends on where you’ll be staying on the Amalfi Coast. 

Train routes from Rome to the Amalfi Coast 

There are several routes you can take to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by train. For this purpose, we’ll put the town of Amalfi as the destination.  

Route 1: 

Roma Termini-Napoli Centrale-Vietri Sul Mare-Amalfi-bus-Amalfi 

This route involves taking 2 trains and a bus. The approximate journey time is 3hrs 23mins.  

From Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, the Frecciarossa train (fast service) takes you there the fastest. The journey time is around 1hr 10mins.  

Once you reach Napoli Centrale, it’s a short walk to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi (9 minutes). Here you take the regional train service to Vietri Sul Mare-Amalfi for approximately 1 hour. 

Upon arriving, it’s another short walk, this time to the bus stop. Look for the 5120 Sitabus that serves Salerno-Maiori-Amalfi. Sitabus tickets start from €2.60* ($2.86/£2.20) from Salerno to Amalfi. Around 1hr and 13mins later, you’ll arrive at Amalfi. 

Route 2: 

Roma Termini-Salerno-bus-ferry 

This route from Rome to the Amalfi Coast involves taking a train, a bus and a ferry.  

Take the Frecciarossa train service from Roma Termini to Salerno. The journey time is around 1hr 49mins. At Salerno, walk to Garibaldi Barrella bus station and take bus number 5 or 6 to Pertini Scuola Barra.  

From here, it’s around a 6-minute walk to the ferry port. The ferry carrier, Travelmar , will take you from Salerno to Amalfi in 35 minutes. A one-way ticket per person costs €10 ($11/£8.56). 

How much do train tickets cost in Italy? 

Like air travel, prices of train tickets in Italy depend on the day you travel.  

Prices will also differ depending on whether you choose the fast Frecciarossa service or the regional service.  

Cheaper tickets that involve a station change tend to be much cheaper. It adds extra time to your journey but it’s a good option if you’re traveling on a budget. 

Cost of train tickets from Rome to Naples 

To give you an idea of train ticket prices, the below are the same direct Rome to Naples service.  

• A one-way ticket (departing on Saturday at 13:00): starts from €79* ($87/£68) 
• A one-way ticket (departing on Monday at the same time): starts from €56* ($62/£48) 

In comparison, the lowest ticket price I saw for a regional train service from Rome to Naples started from €13.10* ($14.40/£11.20).  

Check the Trenitalia website for the most up-to-date train times and prices and book ahead to save time.  

Rome to the Amalfi Coast by coach 

A simple and economical way to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is by coach. There are several options available, several of which I’ve listed below. 

Option 1 

Rome Tiburtina bus station to Amalfi Piazza Flavio 

The cheapest coach option I found was with the company Marozzi. The journey time for this trip is approximately 5 hours and a coach ticket starts from €25* ($27.50/£21). 

Marozzi also has a direct coach service that goes from Rome Tiburtina to Positano bus station. The journey time is around 4hrs 30mins and tickets cost the same as above. 

Option 2 

Rome Tiburtina bus station to Salerno Piazza Concordia 

A second option is with Itabus. The journey time for this trip is approximately 3hrs and 45mins and tickets cost €37* ($41/£32).  

However, while the journey time is shorter, this route only brings you to Salerno. You’ll still need to take a bus or ferry to reach the Amalfi Coast.  

The low-cost company, Flixbus, also offers the same route but at much lower prices. I found prices starting from €3.90* ($4.29/£3.30) to €9.99* ($10.99/£8.56). 

Option 3 

Rome Tiburtina to Cava de’ Terrini (Salerno) 

Operator Leonettibus has a coach service that takes you from Rome Tiburtina bus station to Cava de’ Terrini in Salerno. Prices start from €16.90 ($19/£14.50) for a one-way ticket with a journey time of around 2hrs 50mins.  

Like option 2, Cava de’ Terrini bus station is also a distance from Amalfi at 11.8km (7.3mi).  Leonettibus offers other coach destinations in Salerno when visiting from Rome. They are: 

• Cavaliero (14.8km (9.2mi)) from Amalfi) 
• Scafati (13.4km (8.3mi) from Amalfi) and  
• Nocera Inferiore (12.3km (7.6mi) from Amalfi) 

Option 4 

Rome Anagnina to Nocera Inferiore  

Another company, Express Bus, operates a coach service from Rome Anagnina to Nocera Inferiore bus stop. Please note that Rome Anagnina is around 37 minutes by car or 23 minutes by metro from Roma Termini station. 

Like Leonettibus, the bus stop in Salerno is still a distance from Amalfi. Prices start from €18 ($20/£15) for a one-way ticket with a journey time of around 2hrs 35mins. 

For reference, I used trainline.com and checkmybus.it to check the services and prices.  

Rome to the Amalfi Coast by tour  

The final best option for getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is by joining a tour. They’re a great option if you don’t plan to drive or prefer to have a local guide show you around.  

There are plenty of great tours that will suit different timeframes and budgets. I’ve listed some of my favorites below. 

• From Rome: Amalfi Coast group day trip : a packed day trip that includes transportation and visits to Pompeii, Amalfi and Positano.

There is no direct train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. You must take a train from Rome to Naples Central or to Salerno. From here, you have the option of taking a bus or a ferry to reach the Amalfi Coast.

Is a day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast worth it?

The journey from Rome to Amalfi is long and a day trip may not be enough time. But, if you only have a short time in Italy, it is worth considering.

We did this almost both xays. First we drove from the airport to Sorrento, visited Pompeii and went back up to our basé in Lazio, east of Rome and travelled by train to Rome. Didn’t know about all the other options available. Love train travel but the coach sounds doable, too!

It’s funny – I was thinking about going to Napels today. It’s been so long since I have visited and the surroundings are just so beautiful. I need to squeeze in a long weekend as soon as possible. I’d also love to go back to Pompei and finally visit Sorrento. By the way, you don’t have to convince me to take the train in Italy – I’m a back fan of trenitalia 😉

We have never driven the route from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. Once we had an amazing driver who took us an unusual route but most time we went by train. One day we will have to try the train route to Salerno. But I love all the spots there are to visit along the route if we choose to drive.

The Amalfi Coast lies in stunning juxtaposition to Rome's bustling tourist attractions . Its cliffside homes, beautiful beaches , and breathtaking views make this a divine place to enjoy a day trip . Luckily, there are plenty of ways to travel the 273 kilometers from Rome to Positano , the region's main town, as well as to the 12 other captivating villages .

The most direct route to the Amalfi Coast is by car , but this involves narrow, winding roads that at times hug the cliffside. Yes, the iconic vistas give a glimpse into why this is one of the best places to visit in Italy , but it can be nerve-wracking to take your eyes off the road to appreciate them.

Other options include taking a bus, train, ferry, or a combination of the three. Regardless of which method you choose, our list of the best ways to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast will help ensure a seamless trip.

The cheapest way to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is by bus , but it's a bit of a roundabout way of traveling. Tourists can take a bus from Rome Tiburtina to Salerno and hire a car service to transport them the hour-and-20-minute drive into the most popular town, Positano.

Or travelers can hop on a local bus or a ferry from Salerno, which can take roughly an hour and 15 minutes. In general, ferries run between April and October.

The town of Amalfi can also be reached via a 48-minute drive from Salerno or a 30-minute ferry ride. The SITA bus travels from Salerno to Amalfi, with stops in other Amalfi Coast towns , like Atrani, Minori, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare, and Maiori. There's also a SITA bus that runs between Amalfi, Ravello, and Scala. And another that runs from Amalfi to Sorrento with a stop in Positano.

Another option is to take a bus from Rome Tiburtina to Scafati , which lies nine miles north of (or an hour's drive from) Positano. It's not technically on the Amalfi Coast, but it can get you close.

The Leonettibus buses are comfortable and tickets cost about $18. FlixBus also offers a comfortable ride to Salerno for as low as $4, depending on when you book.

Insider's tip: Book a bus ticket well in advance before they sell out, especially since the new license plate restrictions. Also, sit on the right side of the bus for the best views.

The direct train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast can take as little as one hour and 49 minutes up to almost four hours. Trains travel from Roma Termini station to Vietri Sul Mare-Amalfi , a small town on the eastern edge of the Amalfi Coast, about 14 minutes west of Salerno.

From here, tourists can hop on a Sita Bus to the Amalfi Coast towns of Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, and Amalfi. Tickets can be purchased at tabaccherias, cafés, or newspaper stands.

In summer, the TRENITALIA trains depart about every 26 minutes from 6:26 am to 7 pm and cost anywhere from $16 to $43.

Trains also run multiple times a day from Roma Termini direct to Salerno in about an hour and 35 minutes. The SITA bus will take you the rest of the way. It travels from Salerno to Amalfi, with stops in other Amalfi Coast towns, like Atrani, Minori, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare, and Maiori. There's also a SITA bus that runs between Amalfi, Ravello, and Scala. And another that runs from Amalfi to Sorrento with a stop in Positano.

Another way of reaching the Amalfi Coast by train is more involved. Travelers can take a train from Roma Termini to the Naples Stazione Centrale station . This journey will take about an hour and 10 minutes direct, and there are multiple trains that travel this route daily.

Then, tourists must hop on a Circumvesuviana Train to Sorrento , which should take about an hour and 10 minutes. Be warned, there's no air-conditioning on these trains, and they don't take seat reservations.

A faster route involves taking a Campania Express train instead of the Circumvesuviana . It stops at fewer stations, knocking the travel time between Naples and Sorrento to about 45 minutes. This is a more costly option, but the cars are air-conditioned, and passengers can reserve their seats.

From there, board a Sita bus to Positano , which will take about 35 minutes, or Amalfi, which is an hour and a half away. Tickets can be purchased at tabaccherias, cafés, or newspaper stands.

Taking a tour is one of the easiest and most informative ways to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. Taking the 12-hour Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Day Tour From Rome , for instance, is one of the best things to do for history buffs.

A private, air-conditioned vehicle collects tourists from their Roman hotel, then drives them for two and a half hours to one of Pompeii's most famous attractions , the Archeological Park. After touring the impressive sites for two and a half hours, guests are transported to a trattoria for lunch. Only your private group will be booked on the journey.

Note: Food and entry tickets to the Archeological Park are an additional cost.

The next stop is the Amalfi Coast, one of Italy's top points of interest . Here, visitors can enjoy the view as their English-speaking driver tackles the winding roads, and there will be a couple of stops for photo taking.

The final stop is determined by the tourists—either Positano (a large Amalfi Coast town) or Sorrento (which isn't technically part of this UNESCO Heritage Site region).

Visitors will have time to explore the town of their choosing, shop in the cute boutiques, climb the area's gazillion stairs, and marvel at the incredible architecture. When it's time to leave, travelers will board their vehicle for the drive back to their accommodations in Rome.

As mentioned earlier, there's a train that runs multiple times a day from Roma Termini direct to Salerno in about an hour and 35 minutes. From Salerno, tourists can head to one of two ports to board a ferry.

The Molo Concordia pier is the easiest as it lies directly across from the train station. The Molo Manfredi lies a few kilometers away, which means you'll have to hop in a cab or walk with your luggage.

Another option, as mentioned above, is to take a train from Roma Termini to Naples Stazione Centrale and onward to Sorrento. Sorrento's public ferry port is Marina Piccola. There is a bus that will take you to the ferry, or you can walk it (with a lot of stairs to descend) in 10 to 15 minutes.

Positano Jet offers ferries from both Salerno and Sorrento to Positano between April and mid-October. The ferry from Salerno to Positano takes about one hour and costs around $16. The ferry from Sorrento to Positano takes about 40 minutes and costs around $17.

NLG operates a ferry between Sorrento and Positano during high season (May 1 to October 31 st ) three times daily. They charge about $19. They also run between Salerno and Positano once daily for about $16.

Travelmar offers ferries from both ports in Salerno (check your ticket to be sure you're leaving from the right spot) from early April through late September. They run multiple times a day into Positano and Amalfi, as well as Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, and Minori.

Alilauro runs boats once daily between April and early November. They leave at about 5 pm and run from Sorrento to Positano. Tickets cost about $20. They also offer a boat from Sorrento to Amalfi for about $19.

A word of warning: Positano's port lies at the bottom of a steep hill. To get to the town center, travelers will have to carry their luggage up a multitude of stairs.

Skip the stress and leave the scary driving to a professional. Taking a private transfer from Rome to Positano is one of the easiest and most direct ways to reach the Amalfi Coast . In about three and a half hours, a private, air-conditioned vehicle will transport you from a location of your choosing in Rome and deliver you to a destination in Positano.

Transfers to other Amalfi Coast towns can also be arranged, and the time spent in the car will vary based on traffic and weather conditions. The best part? You and your private group can enjoy the spectacular views without having to worry about navigating the twisty roads. Tip: Sit on the right side of the car for the best vistas.

While renting a car may seem like the easiest way to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, this may not be the case if traveling in high season . In June of 2022, the local government instituted an " alternate numberplate system " to reduce traffic and the number of vehicles entering this beatific region, which makes it more complicated for tourists to use a rental car.

During high season, non-local cars with odd-numbered license plates can only enter the region on odd dates, and cars with even-numbered plates can enter on even dates. These rules apply from 10 am to 6 pm from April 24 th to May 2, Holy Week near Easter, in August, and on weekends from mid-June to October.

That means those who plan to stay in the region can't book a resort for an odd number of dates, and they'll have to choose their rental car based on the license plate that lines up with their travel dates.

For those who choose to drive, the route is magnificent—it is slightly terrifying in parts, but the views are glorious, and you'll soon understand why this is dubbed one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe .

The drive will take about three and a half hours to get from Rome to the Amalfi's most popular town, Positano; more if you choose to stop and see the sights of Naples , Pompeii, or the gorgeous gardens of Ravello along the way.

Drivers will follow the AI Autostrada before joining the E45 and finally, the most scenic and famous portion of the journey, the narrow, winding, cliff-hugging SS145. These routes involve tolls, so have cash or a debit/credit card on hand.

Also, be prepared for a bit of a white-knuckle experience, even if you're a seasoned driver. These roads are incredibly narrow, involve sharp turns, and are overrun with other cars and buses in peak season, which means you could sit for hours in traffic and may have to maneuver backward to let larger vehicles turn.

Insider's tip: Avoid driving to the Amalfi Coast during sunset, so you won't be blinded during the journey.

Amalfi Coast Overview

The Amalfi Coast is arguably one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It’s in a small corner of Southern Italy between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno in the Province of Salerno. The region is a 1.5-hour drive to the south from Naples, the closest big city.

The actual coast is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) long and follows a winding two-lane road with the sea on one side and mountains on the other. As you can imagine, with only a winding two-lane road, there are not many options for getting around, but we will explore them all below.

The Amalfi Coast consists of over 10 towns that vary in size. However, chances are you will be staying in one of the five I’ve listed below due to their popularity. These are the main towns with a small description.

• Sorrento : While many do not include this on the coast, I would say that this is the beginning town and is a general departure point for the coast.
• Positano : From Positano, it is officially the Amalfi Coast. This is the first town you will encounter after Sorrento.
• Praiano : The little cousin of Positano, Praiano is also much quieter.
• Amalfi : Yes, there is actually a town called Amalfi as well. It’s known for its church.
• Ravello : The furthest town and the only one not on the water, Ravello is perched above the cliffs overlooking the coast.
• Capri : This is probably the most beautiful island on the planet in my opinion. Since it is an island, the only way to get there is, of course, by ferry or private boat.

Getting To the Amalfi Coast

Below I have outlined the three main ways to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome. Each option has its pros and cons and, in the end, it will come down to your budget.

Private Driver

Your modern-day Roman Charioteer will pick you up at your hotel in Rome and drop you off at your hotel on the Amalfi Coast. This is an ideal option for most since you don’t need to think about anything. If you like easy, this is the option for you.

We offer a Rome to Amalfi Coast private transfer with a stop at Pompeii . The drive is 3.5 hours from Rome to Sorrento. If you’re going to Positano or Praiano, then add another hour to that.

The train ride between Rome and Naples is one hour. High-speed trains run every hour between Rome and Naples Central station (Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale).

When you arrive at the main Naples train station (Napoli Centrale), you take a small local train called the Circumvesuviana, which you’ll disembark directly in Sorrento. This train takes about 45 minutes.

At this point, if you’re only going to Sorrento, then your trip is done. There are no trains after Sorrento, so if you need to go to towns further along the coast, then a taxi will be your best bet. A taxi will cost around €40 to get you from Sorrento to Positano. If you’re going further down the coast, then add around €10-€15 per city. The total trip to Sorrento by train will take around 2.5 hours.

Take a Tour

Just got back 2 days ago from a 25 day trip to Italy that included 3 days in Positano and Capri. Hands down the best way to get to P is take the high speed train from Rome Termini to Salerno, walk two blocks and hop on the 1 hr ferry to Positano and take in all of Amalfi Coast in one go. Taxis are very expensive and don’t recommend them unless needed. Be prepared to walk!!!

Perfect Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast: Itinerary

If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast from Rome in a day, follow this itinerary to enjoy it fully.

Take the ‘Italo’ high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in the morning.

After, catch a train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno . Salerno is at the end of the Amalfi Coast, and you’ll return to Naples, visiting a few places on the Amalfi Coast.

Then, walk or take a taxi from the train station in Salerno to the port of Salerno . The boat leaves from the port called ‘ Molo Concordia ‘.

First, take a boat from Salerno to Amalfi . Take some time (approx. 2 hours) to explore Amalfi. Visit its beautiful cathedral, walk around, and eat delicious gelato.

After, take a boat from Amalfi to Positano . Explore Positano, go to the beach, go shopping, and enjoy the stunning views of the town.

Then, take a boat from Positano to Sorrento . From Sorrento, take the Campania Express to Napoli Centrale (the main train station in Naples). In the evening, take a train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini .

Day Trip From Rome To Pompei And Amalfi Coast

If you want to visit Pompei and the Amalfi Coast on a day trip from Rome, this itinerary will look like this.

Take the ‘Italo’ high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in the morning. Then, change to a train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei .

Take some time in Pompei (2-3 hours) to explore the site.

After, continue by a train from Pompei to Sorrento . Then, take a boat from Sorrento to Positano . Explore Positano , eat delicious gelato, go shopping, and enjoy the stunning views.

After, take a boat from Positano back to Sorrento . Then take the Campania Express from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale .

In the evening, take a train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini .

How to get from rome to amalfi coast.

You can get to Amalfi Coast from Rome by train, bus, car, and a ferry or boat .

The fastest and easiest way to get to Amalfi Coast on a day trip is by train and boat .

Alternatively, you can rent a car in Rome and drive, but I don’t recommend it. The roads at the Amalfi Coast are tiny, and you might often find yourself stuck in a traffic jam.

Below, I’m presenting all the alternatives for getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.

Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast By Train

The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast from Rome is to take the Italo train in the morning from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale .

After, change to a train to Sorrento or Salerno . Sorrento is at the beginning of the Amalfi Coast, and Salerno is at the end of the coast. From these places, you can only take boats to the towns on the Amalfi Coast.

So then take a boat from Sorrento or Salerno to the Amalfi Coast , either Positano or Amalfi.

Note that there is no direct train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast . You can only reach the Amalfi Coast by bus, car, or boat.

Amalfi Coast Tour From Rome By High-Speed Train

You can take the ‘Italo’ high-speed train from Rome to Naples , which only takes 1 hour . Note that there are no trains to the Amalfi Coast.

You can only get to Sorrento and Salerno (the Amalfi Coast’s start and end) by local trains . The only high-speed train that operates from Rome closest to the Amalfi Coast is to Naples.

Day Trip To Amalfi Coast From Rome By Bus

You can get from Rome to Sorrento or Salerno by bus , but it isn’t impossible on a day trip .

The bus journey from Rome to these cities takes between 4 and 5 hours , which gives you little time to explore the Amalfi Coast and return to Rome on the same day.

If you decide to spend a couple of nights on the Amalfi Coast and want to take a bus to get there, I recommend Flixbus .

You can take Flixbus from Rome to Sorrento . Then, take a boat from Sorrento to one of the Amalfi Coast towns (Positano or Amalfi).

So check the ferry departures and plan your trip accordingly. You can book tickets online or on the spot . But I recommend buying them online if you’re on a day trip because big crowds often wait for the ferry and in front of the ticket machine.

So make sure to have a ticket for a specific ferry and plan your itinerary to get the most out of the coast in a day.

All the information you need to reach the Amalfi Coast from Rome

Book a private transfer to the Amalfi Coast Getting to Italy's Amalfi Coast from Rome via public transportation is a long and complicated trip that requires changing the type of public transport at least twice. We do not suggest Rome to Amalfi Coast day trips because you would spend so much time just getting to and from the coast that you wouldn't have much of the day left to take in the sights. Even with a faster and more comfortable private transfer, a Rome to Positano day trip isn't recommended.

If you are flying in to Rome, consider that it will take you at least four hours from the time your plane lands to your arrival on the Amalfi Coast. This takes into account all the different stages of the trip and assumes you are able to make your connections.

The fastest way to travel from Rome to Naples or Salerno is the high-speed train . If you are traveling with a group or large family, a private transfer may actually be cheaper and it is definitely faster and more comfortable.

If your flight arrives in Rome in the afternoon, consider spending your first night in Rome or Naples rather than trying to make it to the Amalfi Coast.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast from the Rome Fiumicino Airport

Taking the train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast requires first taking the train from the Rome Fiumicino Airport to the Termini train station in Rome's city center, and then catching a second train to Naples. The best way to reach the main Roma Termini train station from the Fiumicino Airport is the Leonardo Express, the airport shuttle train that connects the airport with the Termini station .

At the Roma Termini train station, you can take the Italian high-speed train ( Italo or Trenitalia Frecciarossa ) to Naples. Purchase train tickets online, from the ticket window, or with the automatic ticket machines inside the station. If you purchase your train ticket online in advance, you can sometimes find discounted prices . Keep in mind that many discount tickets are non-refundable if purchased ahead of time, so it may be worth it to spend a bit more but opt for a ticket that allows you to change your travel time in case your flight comes in late.

If you are on a tight travel budget and are getting around alone or in a couple, you can consider cheaper trains that take longer and have fewer amenities . The Intercity train runs from Roma Termini to the main Napoli Centrale train station in about two hours and tickets cost about €20. There is also the option of a regional train (treno regionale) that only costs about €10 but takes four hours to reach Naples and stops at all the stations along the line.

You can also take a bus from the Rome Fiumicino airport that goes directly to the central Piazza Garibaldi in Naples , stopping near the train station.

Once you arrive in Naples, you need to take a third train to Sorrento , where you connect to the local Amalfi Coast bus lines. Once you've reached the main Stazione Centrale di Napoli-Piazza Garibaldi, follow signs to the Circumvesuviana . This local train departs from the lower level of the station and runs between Naples and Sorrento in about an hour.

Just outside the Sorrento train station, catch the local Sita bus that will take you along the Amalfi Coast, with stops in Positano, Amalfi, and towns on the Sorrentine Peninsula like Sant'Agata-Nerano. If you need to go further than Amalfi, you'll need to change to a different bus in Amalfi. The bus takes the famously winding coastal road, so make sure to take precautions against motion sickness. For the best view along the way, sit on the right side of the bus where you'll have a better vantage point.

Getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast via Salerno

High-speed trains from Rome also run to Salerno . From here, you can catch one of the many ferries that run to Amalfi and Positano. The Molo Concordia pier where ferries depart is located just opposite the train station, so is easy to get to. The other ferry pier, Molo Manfredi , is located a few kilometers away, so you'll need to catch a taxi. Travelmar is the ferry company with the most routes between Salerno and the Amalfi Coast.

The Sita bus terminal is located in Via Vinciprova , about an eight-minute walk from the Salerno train station. Here you can catch buses to the coastal towns of Amalfi, Atrani, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, and Vietri sul Mare. To get to Ravello, Praiano, or Conca de' Marini by bus, you need to change in Amalfi.

If you are staying in Positano, consider the exact location of your hotel before deciding to take the ferry. From the ferry pier located on Spiaggia Grande , you may have to climb a number of steep flights of stairs to reach a hotel located in the upper part of town, which is only accessible on foot. This is important to know if you're traveling in summer with a number of bags. Otherwise, there are porters located at the pier who can transport your bags at an extra charge.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome Ciampino Airport

Once you've landed at Rome's Ciampino Airport, take a bus to the main train station of Roma Termini and from there follow the instructions above.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome Tiburtina Train Station

An alternative option is catching a direct bus to the Amalfi Coast from the Rome Tiburtina train station (located along the blue line of the subway). Buses operated by Autolinee Marozzi run from there to Amalfi and Sorrento.

The service is active only in the summer period.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast from Rome by public transportation can be stressful . To avoid delays and crowds either at the beginning or end of your holiday in Campania, we suggest booking a private transfer (car with driver) directly from the airport or train station in Rome to your hotel on the Amalfi Coast. This is also an excellent solution if you are trying to reach the Amalfi Coast from Florence or Venice.

If you are traveling with a group of at least four passengers, it may even be cheaper to book a private transfer than the sum of the cost of train, bus, or ferry tickets to get to the coast... without taking into account the time you save and hassle you avoid!

Another benefit to booking a private car transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is that you can request a stop along the way at Pompeii or Herculaneum to visit the archaeological ruins . Both of these famous sites are located at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius along the route between Rome and Positano, so a private transfer with a stop to explore on your own or with a guide is a great way to make the most of your time.

What If I Rent a Car from Rome?

It can be stressful to drive in southern Italy, especially along the winding road that runs between the Amalfi Coast towns that is often clogged with heavy traffic.

The first stretch you'll take on with your rental car is along the A3 highway to Naples , where you'll exit at Castellammare di Stabia. From here, you'll take a series of curvy, narrow roads thick with other cars and tour buses. In addition, there is little parking on the Amalfi Coast and day rates are expensive.

The most popular transportation hubs of the coast are Naples, Sorrento, and Salerno. Among transportation options for getting from Rome to Amalfi are bus, train, private transfer, and then coaches or ferries. It is definitely an amazing option for a day trip from Rome.

If you are flying into Rome, remember that the journey from Rome to the Amalfi coast will take at least four hours from your landing time

What you need to know before planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast

By Train – Easiest Way

Undoubtedly, going to the Amalfi Coast by high-speed train is among most convenient options. Besides Naples, there are many small towns to discover nearby your final destination.

Rome-Naples-Amalfi

If you are traveling from the Rome Fiumicino Airport , you have to take the Leonardo Express shuttle train to the Termini railway station. Then, you need a train which goes to Naples (Napoli). Talking about Rome Ciampino airport : take a bus or taxi to Termini station and then a train to Naples.

Different types of trains run between Rome and Naples:

• Eurostar Freccia Rossa (TAV) : is the most convenient and fastest option, but also the most expensive. In less than two hours you will arrive to Naples’ Piazza Garibaldi station. Also, the train departs every hour and usually it is quite punctual. The ticket price is about 50 euro one-way
• Intercity:  the ride takes about two hours to reach Naples by this train with the ticket cost starting from 18 euro
• Interegional:  these trains stop at every station, so the journey from Rome to Naples takes about four hours. The ticket price is cheap – about 10 euro, so this option is perfect for budget tourists

Two main companies provide train tickets to Naples from Rome:

Italo Trenitalia

You can easily purchase train tickets online or at any station. Note: prices for tickets are much lower if you buy them in advance. In addition, both companies often provide customers with special offers and discounts . However, such kind of tickets is not refundable.

Once you arrive at the Naples “Stazione Centrale” station, you have to follow the sign leading to the Circumvesuviana,  the regional railway line located under the main railway station. Then, take the train to Sorrento. The journey from Naples to Sorrento will take about an hour. Outside the Sorrento railway station will be the stop for the autobus Sita buses headed to Positano-Amalfi or to Sant’Agata-Nerano. Depending on the town you would like to see first.

You can buy tickets to Sorrento at the ticket office located next to the platform or at the newspaper/tobacco shops in the train station. Trains leave every 30 minutes on average

Rome-Salerno-Amalfi

The Freccia Rossa TAV trains also go to Salerno. So, you can go directly there and after, take the bus to Amalfi or one of the ferries to Amalfi and Positano. Below is the option with ItaloTreno :

• Note:  directly opposite to the train station in Salerno you will find the Molo Concordia pier. There is also the Molo Manfredi pier, located a few kilometers from the station and you will need to take a taxi to reach it

You can reach Positano from Rome by travelling from the Rome Tiburtina train station (on the Metropolitana subway blue line) by FlixBus.com . This option is the cheapest one, since one-way ticket price starts from 7 euro per person.

• For Amalfi the single route bus departs daily at 7 am and arrives at noon
• For Sorrento there are two routes, one of them departs at 7 am and another one at 3 pm

Private Driver

Using a service of the private driver is the most convenient option to discover towns of the Amalfi Coast . However, sometimes it is difficult to drive the road and there are problems with car park finding since there are always many tourists, especially in summer months. Despite the fact that it is the most expensive option, you will be able to enjoy each city with the maximum comfort and without spending time on different buses and trains. The one-way transfer price is 660 euros.  Naples is the best city where to start your journey to the Amalfi coast.

There are no direct ferries from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. However, you can take a ferry to Sorrento and the to travel to Positano and Amalfi.

If you plan to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by car, the distance is 274,6 km. The ride will take around 3.5 hours. The option is convenient, but you have to consider toll roads and difficulties with parking since you are going to visit one of the most tourist Italian spots. However, considering this option, you will save time on waiting for trains and buses.

• To drive from Rome, take the A1 Autostrada (toll road) to Naples and then the A3 Autostrada
• Follow the direction toward Sorrento and then take the SS 163 (Via Nastro Azzuro) to the Amalfi Coast

Despite the fact that Rome and Naples located near each other, it is still possible to travel among these cities by plane. However, do not expect it to save you time over the train . You have to consider transport time and cost to and from two airports. So, it can take between 3 to 4 hours to travel between Rome and Naples by plane. Most popular airlines for this option are Alitalia and Vueling . Prices for round-trip start from 100 euros.

What to See on the Amalfi Coast?

• Sorrento – a town on the Northern part of the coast with notable buildings, lemon parks, observation decks, and shops. It is also known for its production of Limoncello.

Rome and the Amalfi Coast are two of the most popular destinations in Italy, often visited together due to the relatively short distance between the two.

Indeed, getting to the Amalfi coast from Rome is easy enough; however, it is not quite as straightforward as catching a train down and, often, planning transport to this part of Italy from Rome feels overwhelming.

Visitors looking at going to the Amalfi Coast are always surprised to discover how long it actually takes to get there from Rome and how different transport options are deepening on where on the Amalfi coast you are going to be.

How far is Amalfi Coast from Rome

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coast a little over 250Km / 155 miles south of Rome.

The coast develops along the Southern part of a promontory that starts from Salerno (260 km south of Rome) and stretched into the Mediterranean.

The coast itself is about 40 km long so the exact distance between Rome and Amalfi Coats depends on where on the coast you are going to be and the exact route you take.

The three best ways to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast

There are 3 ways to get to Amalfi Coast from Rome:

2. by a combination of train and car

3. by a combination of train and ferry.

Which one of these ways is best for you depends on where on the Amalfi Coast you need to go and the season.

Need to know : Ferries are a wonderful way to reach the Amalfi Coast and the best way to explore it while there. however, they only run regularly in the good season. At present, the season starts at the beginning of April and ends at the end of October. As this is affected by sea conditions, always check ferry schedules and availability for your exact dates before committing to this means of transport!

How to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast by car

One of the easiest ways to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast is by car, either your own or one with a private driver.

The overall distance between Rome and towns on the Amalfi Coast is between 250 / 20 km and you can expect the trip to take between 3 and 4 hours in normal traffic conditions.

The drive between Rome and Amalfi Coast is freeway/motorway up to Naples and Salerno and then on local roads: since the Coast is high and winding, expect local roads to be narrow, scenic and full of curves.

Having your own car comes with advantages, including the ability to plan your own schedule. however, in this area it also comes with disadvantages you need to consider when deciding on your transport type:

In the busy season, the Amalfi Coast road is incredibly trafficked , often with bumper to bumper cars along its length. This makes explirting by car frustrating and time-consuming.

On top of this, in the busy season there are some limitations to road access: last year, they implemented a system based o number plates so that even numbers / odd numbers had access on different days.

This was done to help the traffic congestion but can, of course, create issues if you have the ‘wrong’ plate or are not aware of the system.

Top Tip: If going by your own car, ask your host for rules and access on the exact dates of your visit as this changes often and can only be confirmed safely by a local.

The local roads are bendy and narrow : caution is necessary at all times and especially after dark.

Local roads are often a problem for people with motion sickness .

Parking is an issue in the busy season: make sure you have accommodation with free parking.

Many of these problems can be sorted by hiring a driver, however, even do consider the following:

A car transfer from Rome to Amalfi Coast is an expensive option. The distance to be covered is big, petrol is very expensive and you often have to cover the fact that the driver will have to then return to Rome. This easily pushes the cost into the hundreds of euro: it can be worth it, but only consider it if budget is not an issue.

Good to know : if you are considering hiring a driver, it can be worth getting someone who can stop in Pompeii on your way down to Amalfi. The cost is often only marginally higher and can save you the cost of a separate trip to Pompeii. Have a look at Welcome Pickups * or companies that have an official NCC license (this is the license required by law to offer drivers’ services in Italy. NCC means ‘Noleggio Con Conducente’, meaning: Rental with driver.

A more budget-friendly option is to get closer to Amalfi Coast by train and then get a local driver to your town of choice.

How to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast by train and car (recommended)

Another great way to get to Amalfi Coast from Rome is by catching a fast train to Sorrento and then a local cr transfer to your destination of choice.

This option is great as it is comfortable, green, often significantly cheaper than a car transfer from Rome and often easier on the stomach if you suffer from motion sickness.

The closest train station to the Amalfi Coast is Salerno, and you can get there by high-speed train from Rome in about 2 hours direct.

Depending on where oj the Amalfi coast you are staying, it is also possible to arrive in Naples and get a driver from there.

Naples is further from the coast but depending on where your accommodation is, it can make sense to get quite from both cities and compare.

A combination of train + car is the best way to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast:

• In winter, when ferries do not run
• After hours, after the ferries have stopped running
• If you are staying in Ravello, Praiano or other localities not served by a ferry

How to get to Amalfi Coast from Rome by train and ferry (recommended April to October)

My favorite way to reach the Amalfi Coast from Rome is by combining train to Salerno and ferry to my final destination.

The Amalfi Coast is stunning from the water and you cannot beat the impression of that magical view as you get a first get a glimpse of it from the water!

Also, the ferries are cheap and reliable so you can get to your destination in a budget-friendly way!

Ferries connect Salerno to several locations on the Amalfi coast: the ferry port is close to Salerno/train station and you can walk between the station and some of the piers in a matter of minutes.

As ferry lines vary depending on your destination, make sure you take note of the exact departure pier and schedule before getting to Salerno.

How to get from Rome airport to Amalfi Coast

The closest airport to Amalfi Coast is Naples. however, it is also possible to reach the Amalfi coast from Rome’s Fiumicino airport.

There are three ways to get to the Amalfi Coast from Fiumicino:

Car – see above for pros and cons. The distance, in this case, is about 300km/ 186 miles

Train – there is no direct train between Rome’s airport and the Amalfi Coast.

The best option, in this case, is taking the Leonardo Express train shuttle into Rome and then the train to Salerno from there. Then you can follow the directions above to get to your destination.

The other option is to get the once-a-day- train to Naples and then make your way to the Amalfi Coast by car.

The best way to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast with kids

The best way to reach the Amalfi coast from Rome with kids in town is by a combination of train + car or train +ferry depending on season and exact destination.

This is the best way to avoid long boring hours in a car and can help with motion sickness. Trains and ferries have special prices for kids, meaning this also a great option for people visiting the Amalfi Coast with kids on a budget.
