We thought we were just doing a food tour but it was so much more! Phyllis was fantastic in sharing the history and cultural aspects of the different neighborhoods as well as the stories of the families that owned the different restaurants. It was a fabulous deep dive into the Chicago known as the city of neighborhoods! Highly recommend this tour for locals as well!

...This tour gives you tastes of ethnic foods that are more Chicago than the tourist spots. Phyllis is knowlegeable about the neighborhood and works with food allergies or preferences so that you will have a great experience. We took our 15 y.o. grandson who loved it as much as we did.

Phyllis was our enthusiastic tour guide and led us on an incredibly informative tour along Argyle (uptown) and Andersonville. Altogether it was maybe a couple of miles (very easy walk) but so much history, culture and food (!) along the way. Thoughtful and organized; I would absolutely recommend this tour.

Such an amazing food tour!! Phyllis is very knowledgable about both food and the Uptown neighborhood...Portions were big, and I was so full by the end. I'm a vegetarian and all of the veggie options were very tasty. I will definitely be going back to these restaurants. Totally worth it!

The tour is HIGHLY recommended, both for the delicious nibbles across multiple cute locales and for the highly valuable information relayed by it's wonderful host, Phyllis. My only wish is that every neighborhood had a Phyllis to guide me around and feed my hungers for food and knowledge and discovery! Thanks Phyllis!

Having spent the past 16 years living in and around the Uptown/Andersonville area, I thought I had a handle on the diverse cuisine and culture of the neighborhood; it turns out, I didn't know the half of it...Its an absolutely wonderful way for an adventurous traveler to spend an afternoon off the beaten trail in Chicago, but equally fascinating for a local like myself!

Our experience with Phyllis and the Chicago Foodways tour could not have been better. We spent the afternoon sampling Vietnamese and Swedish delights and learning about the history of the Argyle and Andersonville neighborhoods. Can't wait to return to Chicago and take Phyllis' other tour!

Well researched, thoughtful food choices. The Saigon to Stockholm tour was an exceptional 2 1/2 hour excursion through two of the cites more obscure communities. Phyliss’s engaging story telling and exceptional food knowledge crafted a memorable experience.

Absolutely amazing food tour of really unique and historic areas of Chicago! Fantastic history and context for the equally delicious food we had. Would highly recommend this tour, especially if you're wanting a unique perspective on real Chicago life!

A really nice mix of great food, history and conversation. Jordan was a great guide. Highly recommended.

Fantastic tour of the iconic foods of Chicago! Dave was fantastic! Best deep dish pizza ever! The walking was great, even in the rain/drizzle that was passing through. The guide was great! Learned a bunch I never knew.We also did two more tours!

Dave was AMAZING during our Chinatown tour. Everything was taken care of, it was so easy, and he was so knowledge about both the food, customs, and history of the neighborhood. A great mix of experiences in one tour.

Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. She even told us about other places to see and eat in Chicago. I would recommend this tour for tourists and local residents as well. We’d do it again.

My boyfriend and I went on this tour together while I visited him in Chicago for the first time and enjoyed the food, history, and getting to walk around all over. Be sure to wear tennis shoes and be hungry because you will be full when your finished.

Had a great tour. The guide was great and the food was delicious. We really enjoyed the spots, the information and the group size. Britany was fabulous. She was super attentive and fun person to spend a few hours with here.

I went on both the Wicker Park and River North tours, and as a local Chicagoan, both tours introduced me to new foods/history/culture of Chicago, and also reminded me of why I love this city. Highly recommended for both locals and tourists! Better yet, locals bring your tourist friends and have a great afternoon experiencing Chicago in a tasty and fun way!

This was a great tour! The food was delicious and diverse. Our guide, Sarah, was very informative and friendly. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to explore a neighborhood of Chicago (Wicker Park) you’ve probably never been to before.

This was a great way to explore a new city! Mike was a fantastic tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the area. The sidewalk food tour combined two of my favorite activities: walking and eating. So fun.

We took the River North tour with Jake. This was such a great way to see the city and sample a variety of food. I liked that the sit down restaurants alternated with the stand and eat places with a walk in between. I loved the pizzap and I always appreciate an opportunity to sample Rick Bayless' food!

River North tour was a good time. A great way to have a sampling of the area, it's history and food. Tour guide was informative and interactive. Give it a try.

What a fun way to explore the city. We loved the history and the taste of Wicker Park. Chicagoans take advantage of a tourist POV and discover local spots that give Chicago its rich diversity.

Food in Chicago – Why is it Special?

Chicago foodie neighbourhood breakdown, the best food tours in chicago, final thoughts.

What makes the food in Chicago so distinctive and special is its richness that can’t be found elsewhere. From deep-dish pizzas, to mouthwatering hot dogs and barbecues, it fills the streets with a pleasant smell that only makes you want to dive right in.

Chicago - Food

The food in Chicago is a blend of many cultures that have been associated with the city throughout history. You can find a piece of almost every part of the world. Korean, Vietnamese, Persian, Swedish, Mexican, French, you name it! The choices are in abundance at every corner.

It is this amalgamation of cultures, spices and aroma that makes the food in the Windy City EPIC.

When you’re in the Windy City , there are a few neighbourhoods that are crucial to making the Chicago food scene what it is today. Before we dive right in to the ultimate Chicago foodie tours list, let’s uncover some of the best food neighbourhoods to set your sights, and smells, on.

West Town (which consists of Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and Bucktown) is a destination-worthy dining experience if you’re up for a true foodie adventure. Imagine starting your day with fresh pastries at French bakeries, making your way through world-famous tacos, a strip of coffee shops, and ending your night with Filipino smoked meats (drool).

Apart from its food backyard, this neighbourhood is a melting pot of all things artsy. Unique museums, art galleries, and old-school vintage shops can be found at every turn. The Wicker Park area is known for cool global dining, live music bars, and boutiques. While in the Ukrainian Village, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art hosts various cultural events. Ah, isn’t this the life?

Ukranian Village Chicago

Near North side is an area that not only boasts a scenic riverfront and skyscrapers, but is also home to many eateries and restaurants – a foodie paradise if you must! This part of town is ideal if you’re out for a romantic dinner, or a casual night out with friends.

And, when you’re craving for after-dinner sweets, ‘doughnut’ worry (you had to see this coming right?) You can always stop by the local doughnut eateries and pack on those glorious glazed doughnuts. If we were you, we wouldn’t listen to anyone who dares say ‘the healthiest part of a doughnut is in the middle’ . Blasphemy – there is no place for that kind of negativity here.

Of course, you wouldn’t want to miss out on Chinatown . Get ready to be wowed when you enter a special place called Richland Center Food Court. With great reviews all around, buckle up and be transported to a different and unique part of Chicago that will keep your taste buds wanting more.

Now that we’ve given you a build-up of the culinary culture in Chicago, let’s get right into all the action!
