The Cult (formed in 1983) is an English post-punk and hard rock band, originally formed as a gothic, metal revivalist band with Native American influences, hailing from Bradford, Yorkshire, UK.

Prior to forming The Cult, vocalist Ian Astbury founded the gothic rock band the Southern Death Cult alongside guitarist David Burrows, bassist Barry Jepson, and drummer Haq Quereshi. In December 1982 the band issued their debut double A-sided single “Moya”/“Fatman” and were attracting audiences of up to 2,000 people by their fifth live gig. Following a slot opening for the band Bauhaus, Astbury disbanded the group after reading too many positive articles about them in music periodicals.

By 1983 Astbury had formed Death Cult with guitarist Billy Duffy, drummer Ray Mondo, and bassist Jamie Stewart and released a self-titled EP that summer. With fears of being associated as a gothic band, in 1984 Death Cult became The Cult, boasting their brand of hard rock with punk/psychedelic influences. The band’s debut full-length “Dreamtime” arrived later in 1984 peaking at No. 21 on the UK Albums Chart. The record was led by the single “Spiritwalker”, earned favourable reviews from the musical press, and introduced Astbury’s interest in Native American issues. Prior to touring in support of the release The Cult recorded five songs at Maida Vale 5 studio for Richard Skinner of BBC Radio.

The Cult’s fourth single “She Sells Sanctuary” was released in May 1985, peaking at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart. By this point Mark Brzezicki had arrived as the group’s new drummer and the band were putting the final touches on their sophomore album. 1985’s ”Love” arrived in August strongly rooting their music away from punk towards 1960’s psychedelia. The album charted well peaking at No. 4 in the UK, and sold impressively throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.S. In support of the release The Cult embarked on a worldwide tour with new drummer Les Warner, during which time the band released the subsequent album singles “Rain” and “Revolution”.

Despite initial recordings not satisfying the Cults’ members, re-recordings in New York with producer Rick Bubin produced positive albeit much heavier results. The 1987 album “Electric” was led by the No. 18 single “Love Removal Machine”, cementing the Cult’s devoted following in the UK and augmenting one in the U.S. The Cult’s fourth full-length album “Sonic Temple” was recorded with Astbury and new drummer Matt Sorum, and represented the group’s most successful release to date. Earning gold certification in the UK and platinum in the U.S., the album’s Top 10 U.S. single “Fire Woman” led to the band touring with Aerosmith, Soundgarden, and Metallica.

With Mickey Curry added on drums and Charlie Dayton on bass, the Cult released their fifth full-length “Ceremony” in 1991. Despite the sales of its predecessor, the Cult project was splintering behind the scenes, and following the release the band took a three year hiatus. The compilation “Pure Cult” arrived in 1993, as did a new rhythm section featuring former Mission bassist Craig Adams and drummer Scott Garrett. Following a disappointing self-titled album in 1994 the band once again took a hiatus with Astbury forming the Holy Barbarians” in 1995.

Astbury, alongside Matt Sorum, Duffy and Martyn LeNoble appeared as The Cult in June 1999 at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. The group later crafted the album “Beyond Good and Evil” in 2001, “Born into This” in 2004, and “Choice of Weapon” in 2012.

Live reviews

The Cult will probably always be most closely associated with the eighties; back then, they came over like The Cure’s more brazen, no-bullshit cousin, with a take on gothic rock that was always more concerned with image and sound than any real thematic preoccupation. Frontman Ian Astbury, too, gave Robert Smith a run for his money in the make-up stakes, and continues to prove a considerably more energetic presence on stage. Outwith that decade, though, they began to struggle, and have been on-again, off-again ever since 1995, when they initially split. Their first reunion, in 1999, saw them drop a well-received new record, Beyond Good and Evil; ten years later, though, Astbury had taken to being altogether more cautious about their future, declaring that no further new material would stem from the reformation. He’s gone back on that promise, though, with Choice of Weapon released two years ago to a strong commercial showing in the United States and Canada, and another largely agreeable reception from rock critics. Whilst the Bradfordians prep another new LP, due later this year, they’re touring their classic 1987 album Electric in its entirety; expect them to flesh out the set with other classics, too, like ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ and ‘Revolution’, before they go out in support of their next album in 2015.

The Cult is opening on this leg of the G 'n R tour. I was super stoked when I heard that. The show I saw was in the Cowboys' AT&T stadium, which is monstrous with less than stellar accoustics. The place was about half-full when The Cult started their set. You could tell Ian was not thrilled about the folks up front that were texting instead of trying to enjoy the music in front of them. He made several comments along those lines. But the band still sounded great. I would actually say it was easier to understand Ian's vocals with less amps behind him than it was to understand Axl with a wall of power behind him. As more people came in and the beer had been flowing, people were getting into the music. The last two songs She Sells Sactuary and Love Removal Machine had everybody engaged. Billy Duffy seemed to feed off that better energy, too, as he began windmilling ala Pete Townsend. They definitely did not disappoint but I think they are better suited for more intimate venue where they can connect more quickly. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

It seems rather fitting to have described British hard rock outfit The Cult as a cult phenomena following their incarnation in the early 80s. The group has now cemented its place on the circuit and despite infrequent breaks in their recording and touring schedules, as of late they are intent on performing to the devoted fanbase who continue to sell out their tours in force.

No longer described as cult, despite the band name, the venue is packed this evening with fans of the group's long discography. They are not disappointed as the quartet takes to their instruments looking energised and intent as they grapple with a first set made exclusively of the 'Electric' album. The second half is far more about showcasing the very best selections of their discography and features the new classics of 'She Sells Sanctuary' and 'Rain'. These are of course received well by the vocal crowds and simply spurs the group on to throw themselves further into the instrumentals. An encore of 'Horse Nation' and 'Sun King' is a fitting end to a rambunctious, nostalgic evening.

I am sorry to say, as a fan of the group since the 80s and watching them live several times I was very disappointed will the singer's Attitude, he seemed so much up his own Arse and arrogant. Spitting on stage. Someone has to clean up!! There was a lot of drinking and dangerous mooshing going on, several girls left there place at the front as they were fearful for there safety . I stayed at front till 2 songs from the end. I was getting badly hurt being pushed against the barrier. What I thought was a absolute disgrace was the singer told the crowd that in a crowd of Six thousand it's stupid putting yourself in danger( hinting at me) and if they don't like the rock way then they should not go to gigs!!? I pay the same as the drunk spaced out individuals who want to cause bother.why should not I expect to be safe? I'm not a fan of them now because of this attitude. music was great, cello and violin at one point with invited musicians. Such a shame the night was spoilt for me and other weaker folk.

The Cult is the reason for my becoming a dedicated musician in 1985. I finally saw them in 2003, it was a huge moment for me but I can admit being a little underwhelmed by the lack of energy on the stage. Sloppy and a bit boring. Fast forward to last night and the difference still has me singing Wild Flower, their opener. They were fantastic! As soon as they walked on-stage their confidence and sound took command and I realized that THIS was what I had been waiting for. The crowd was great, the setlist impeccable, and the chemistry of the Cult very solid. Even Billy Duffy took the mic at the end to express his appreciation for the audience, so I know that they had a blast, too. It really showed!

johnny-wall-1’s profile image

Right from the off, Astbury was stamping his war dance in a Jim Morrison style as Billy Duffy stood, legs spread as far as possible, firing out a howling solo on his iconic white Gretsch guitar. Rain's towering melody got the crowd jumping as they switched between songs from the new album and old classic’s. Tracks like Fire Woman and Li'l Devil kept up the momentum, with Astbury's voice sounding as primal and defiant as ever. It started off massive and just built from there to an amazing crescendo. Absolutely Brilliant

Saw them once at The Brixton Academy in the UK around Nov 1987. Being an American 15 year old at the time on holiday in the UK at the time, and it being my first real concert, it was an amazing experience. Great memories of them rocking out hard with Billy Duffy crushing the guitar solos. Somehow I remember the opening bands too: crazy pink revolver and Balem and the Angel. Great times. hope to make the wellmont show in NJ. Soundtrack of my youth.

A great show/performance, considering the venue. The River Cree Edmonton, really needs to look and evaluate their room to improve the sound and lessen the '60's/'70's issues of echo feedback, as voiced by Ian Astbury.

With that said, the group delivered a very, memorable rockin', enjoyable performance. I have been a fan from the beginning, well, since 1984 anyway. Still a great fan and deservedly so. ;-)

The entire show was cancelled 50min before the doors were supposed to be open.

The place was locked down and dead upon arrival at 6pm. Not a sole in sight. No

equipment out back..nothing. Total bust.

We were extremely skeptical from the start and it pretty much ended with a

fizzle as we expected.

No love for the NILE and it's related clubs.

Best gig I’ve been to in a while, really slick sound and loads of energy. Ian Astbury’s vocal was incredible had the audience jumping through a succession of crowd-pleasers. I didn’t catch the first act but Yonaka put in a great support-act shift but the Cult were in a different league to many bands I’ve seen this year and I’m looking forward to the next time

In April 2021, THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy spoke to Tone-Talk about the progress of the recording sessions for the band's new album. The follow-up to 2016's "Hidden City" is being helmed by producer Tom Dalgety , who has previously worked with GHOST and ROYAL BLOOD , among others.

"We've been digging away at that over the last year and a half," Billy said. "We're working with a great young English producer called Tom Dalgety . And, obviously, with the circumstances of the last year or so, it's been a little challenging. But we're making some progress.

"The philosophy in THE CULT camp, really, is about quality, not quantity," Duffy explained. "We don't just need to keep putting out records for the sake of it. Without being ridiculous, we wanna, within a certain realistic time frame, make sure that the records that we put out are as good as they can be. So sometimes that takes a bit longer. And that's kind of where we're at."

He reiterated: "We're well into the process of the new CULT album."

Speaking about THE CULT 's songwriting approach this time around, Billy said: "One of the things about THE CULT , I think, that may be worth mentioning is it's always been a collaborative creative effort between me and Ian [ Astbury , vocals]. And as you can imagine, like any kind of situation, there's pushing and pulling, and Ian wants to go a certain direction, and I might resist, or I might wanna go a certain direction. And that tension creates [ THE CULT sound]. It's not like Ian writes ' Ian songs' and Billy writes ' Billy songs,' and we record them as THE CULT . There are no ' Ian songs' or ' Billy songs' — there are Ian and Billy songs together. And over the time, there's a bit of a creative — it's not always tension; I don't mean that in a bad way. That's what makes it good. It's that blend. We sort of respect each other to the extent that I think there's a trust there, and I think that, after this many years together, and a few years apart, I think we trust each other and respect each other enough.

"I think it's healthy to have creative tension," he continued. "There's nothing worse than walking into a room where nobody's got any ideas. I'd rather have an argument about something creative than to have nothing, just the sound of crickets: 'All right. What are we gonna do now?'

"We see things very differently," Billy admitted. "In a lot of ways, we're very alike. Our birthdays are one year and two days apart. So we're both Taureans. Our birthdays are both coming up very soon. We're very alike in a lot of ways and very different in a lot of ways."

"Hidden City" was released in February 2016 via Cooking Vinyl . The follow-up to 2012's "Choice Of Weapon" was written by Astbury and Duffy and was produced by Bob Rock , who has previously worked with METALLICA and MÖTLEY CRÜE .

In May 2020, it was announced that THE CULT had inked a deal with Black Hill Records .

The aforementioned "Sonic Temple" album catapulted THE CULT into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified platinum in 1990. It made it to No. 10 on the Billboard charts, and several of the album's songs remain rock-radio staples to this day.

Kehlani denies allegation she is member of a 'cult' amid custody battle with ex

Portrait of Edward Segarra

Kehlani is addressing claims made by her ex Javaughn Young-White after he filed for custody of their 5-year-old daughter.

Young-White, who welcomed daughter Adeya with the R&B star in 2019, filed his custody petition in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 24, according to court documents obtained Monday by USA TODAY.

Young-White, who is also a musician, is demanding full custody of Adeya and that Kehlani undergo a psychological exam, citing the singer's mental health struggles and alleged membership in a "cult."

"I am not here to disparage (Kehlani)," Young-White said in the filing. "However, the environment that she has created for herself is not the type of environment that a child should be living and therefore, I bring myself to the mercy and wisdom of the court to save my daughter before it is too late."

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Kehlani for comment.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Kehlani is also facing backlash on social media after being spotted with controversial singer Chris Brown .

Kehlani responds to ex's 'cult' allegations

In a lengthy statement posted to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Kehlani said she "strongly den(ies) any claims that I have put my child in harm's way or left my child alone with anyone deemed dangerous or unsafe."

"I have always taken great care to ensure that my child remains protected and safe at all times," Kehlani continued. "My child and my commitment to motherhood have always been my sole driving forces in this life and will always remain so. This is who I am and what I have always been focused on."

Regarding Young-White's claim of her membership in a cult, Kehlani said she does "not align with any of the allegations made against my former religious community that have been stated in the media."

"This is a legal, private, familial matter that will be handled accordingly," Kehlani concluded. "I will now be taking space for my own personal well-being and, most importantly, for the well-being of my child."

Kehlani also shared an Instagram post from Young-White, in which her ex refuted TMZ's characterization of his custody complaint.

Kehlani is member of a 'cult' that 'controls her actions,' ex alleges

In his complaint against ex and co-parent Kehlani, Young-White claimed "everyone else has (a) bigger say-so when it comes to (the) upbringing of our daughter than I do."

Young-White alleged Kehlani has been a member of a cult in recent years and that the group "controls her actions and her behavior, including when it comes to the upbringing of our daughter."

The "Crash" singer's ex said he was prohibited from seeing Adeya for months because the cult's alleged leader, Neto, informed Kehlani he had a vision that Young-White "was a danger to our daughter and would kill her."

Young-White also claimed their daughter is left under the care of the cult's members when Kehlani is traveling on tour. He accused Neto of performing "religious ceremonies" on Adeya and another cult member, nicknamed Messiah, of bathing with the 5-year-old "while being under the influence of psychedelic drugs."

"I have been trying to express my fear, anger and concern to (Kehlani) about our daughter's living environment when she is on tour and when she is with her cult, who essentially live in her home," Young-White said. "However, instead of addressing my feelings, she resorts to disparaging me online to her millions of social media followers."

Kehlani on the road: R&B star announces Crash concert tour. How to get tickets.

Regarding her spiritual life, Kehlani has previously opened up about following the Regla de Ocha religion, also known as Santería.

"It’s a really gorgeous religion that I didn’t seek out, but it sought me," Kehlani told Bust in an August 2022 interview. "I was told upon arrival that I was headed towards a really young death in a couple of different ways — whether it be that I called it upon myself, or as a result of the environment I was in, or just things that have been chasing me my whole life. My life was saved by some really incredible elders."

Kehlani's ex seeks full custody of daughter, paternity on birth certificate

Young-White requested full custody of Adeya in his complaint due to the singer's "busy schedule, her relationship with the cult that she is involved in and the fact that she told me that she has been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder."

The guitarist also demanded a psychological evaluation of Kehlani to verify the status of her mental health.

"Without the court’s intervention, our daughter will continue to be exposed to the possibility of being sexually abused, particularly by the leader of (Kehlani’s) cult and other cult members," Young-White said, referring to Neto’s alleged history of sexual abuse. "Furthermore, without the court’s intervention, our daughter will continue to be in the custody of drug-abusing cult members instead of being with me, her father."

In addition to parental custody, Young-White requested the court to establish paternity and his surname to be added to Adeya's name. Young-White claimed his name was left off Adeya's birth certificate due to the child's home birth.

In terms of compensation, Young-White petitioned the court to require Kehlani to pay him child support.

Kehlani draws backlash for reportedly hanging out with Chris Brown

Kehlani is facing criticism online after the Grammy-nominated singer was pictured with Chris Brown, who remains a controversial figure due to his legal troubles .

Brown shared a selfie of himself and Kehlani on his Instagram Stories Sunday, according to screenshots from Page Six and Vibe magazine . Brown captioned the photo, "Twin," with a red heart emoji.

"Kehlani being buddy buddy with Chris Brown after he made fun of her suicide attempt was not on my 2024 bingo card," @m0ri4h2 wrote on X.

Brown criticized Kehlani on social media in 2016 after the singer was reportedly hospitalized for a suicide attempt .

"Me after defending Kehlani to my last breath only for them to be posted up with Chris Brown a few days later," another X user wrote.

Chris Brown sued for $50M: Singer accused of backstage assault of concertgoers in Texas

"Kehlani went out of their way to remove Tory Lanez off a song after the incident with Megan, but now they all cozied up to Cocaine Fisticuffs Brown?" @itslexdawriter wrote on X.

"Kehlani hanging out with Chris Brown genuinely feels like the biggest (expletive) slap to the face," X user @theesooya wrote.

What is mpox? WHO declares global emergency amid outbreak in Africa

What is monkeypox and what are the symptoms.

Massachusetts reported a case of monkeypox in a man who recently traveled to Canada on May 18, 2022. FOX Medical Team correspondent Dr. Mike Cirigliano discusses the rare virus.

The World Health Organization declared the spread of mpox in Africa a global health emergency on Wednesday.

The health agency warned that the virus might ultimately spill across borders.

What is mpox?

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, was first identified by scientists in 1958 when there were outbreaks of a "pox-like" disease in monkeys. Until recently, most human cases were seen in people in central and West Africa who had close contact with infected animals.

In 2022, the virus was confirmed to spread via sex for the first time and triggered outbreaks in more than 70 countries across the world that had not previously reported mpox.

Mpox belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox but causes milder symptoms like fever, chills and body aches. People with more serious cases can develop lesions on the face, hands, chest and genitals.

How many deaths have been reported?

WHO said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in Africa this year due to mpox, which exceeds last year’s figures.

Are there cases in the US?

So far, more than 96% of all cases and deaths are in a single country in Africa – Congo.

Scientists are concerned by the spread of a new version of the virus that might be more easily transmitted among people.

What's different about the current outbreak in Africa compared to the 2022 epidemic?

During the global outbreak of mpox in 2022, gay and bisexual men made up the vast majority of cases and the virus was mostly spread through close contact, including sex.

Although some similar patterns have been seen in Africa, children under 15 now account for more than 70% of the mpox cases and 85% of deaths in Congo.

Ahead of its emergency meeting, Tedros said officials were dealing with several mpox outbreaks in various countries with "different modes of transmission and different levels of risk."

"Stopping these outbreaks will require a tailored and comprehensive response," he said.

Greg Ramm, Save the Children's Congo director, said the organization was particularly worried about the spread of mpox in the crowded camps for refugees in the east, noting there were 345,000 children "crammed into tents in unsanitary conditions." He said the country's health system was already "collapsing" under the strain of malnutrition, measles and cholera.

Dr. Boghuma Titanji, an infectious diseases expert at Emory University, said it was unclear why children were so disproportionately hit by mpox in Congo. She said it might be because kids are more susceptible to the virus or that social factors, like overcrowding and exposure to parents who caught the disease, might explain it.

At D23, even Disney’s biggest fans feel the pinch of high park prices

A massive poster advertising Disney's fan convention, D23, is displayed on the side of the Anaheim Convention Center.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Clad in a two-tiered ruffled dress, Minnie Mouse ears and a folding fan, all made of recycled Disney parks merch bags, Patt Haro reminisced about the days, decades ago, when Disneyland’s annual pass was just $99.

Haro, 65, and her similarly decked-out husband, Richard, 66, have been annual pass holders for more than 40 years. The Fontana couple used to buy passes for loved ones as Christmas presents.

“Prices have definitely gone up,” said Haro, who also works as a travel planner specializing in Disney trips.

But that hasn’t stopped the couple’s tradition of visiting Disneyland every Sunday in coordinated, handmade outfits, similar to their get-up at the D23 Disney convention in Anaheim this weekend. For their most recent annual passes, known as a “Magic Key,” they paid about $1,600 — which Richard Haro estimates works out to $20 a day.

Why Disney is doubling down on theme parks with a $60-billion plan

Disney’s nearly $2-billion expansion plan for Disneyland highlights the importance of the company’s theme parks for its bottom line.

April 24, 2024

“It’s really worth it to us,” he said.

What keeps them coming back?

“The magic,” Patt Haro said, smiling.

Two fans wear handmade costumes made of recycled Disney parks bags.

At Disney’s biennial fan event at the Anaheim Convention Center, even the biggest fans acknowledged the higher prices for theme park admission and grumbled about the move to paid line-skipping perks. But D23 attendees, a self-selecting group of superfans, were far from willing to cut out trips.

That is good news for the Burbank media and entertainment company, which last week reported relatively soft financial results in its experiences division , which includes the theme parks, cruise line and merchandise. The division reported a 2% increase in revenue for the fiscal third quarter, compared with a year ago, but a 3% decrease in operating income.

The segment dominated previous earnings reports and brought in about 70% of Disney’s operating income during the most recent fiscal year. For a while, the segment was a bright spot for the company as streaming lost billions of dollars while cannibalizing its cable networks and theatrical movie releases.

But company executives and analysts say pent-up demand for travel since the COVID-19 pandemic is starting to subside. Moreover, the company told financial analysts to expect “flattish” revenue for the experiences division for the next fiscal quarter and for several quarters after that. The company cited signs of softening demand among U.S. consumers, a sign that economic stress might finally be weighing on people’s travel plans.

That’s led to questions about whether Disney has priced out lower- or middle-income visitors and how the park will handle consumers increasingly squeezed by inflation. These days, a family of three could expect to pay at least $700 just to get in the turnstile with Park Hopper tickets at the Disney theme parks in Anaheim.

“It is not news that a Disney trip is expensive, but the magnitude and speed of price increases over roughly the past five years was jarring to many respondents, and we do not believe similar increases over roughly the next five years are feasible,” wrote Ric Prentiss, managing director at Raymond James, in a note to clients about results from a survey of 20 Disney superfans, travel agents and local business owners.

For the record:

11:00 a.m. Aug. 13, 2024 A previous version of this story said Disneyland ticket prices start at $106. They start at $104.

A Disney spokesperson said in a statement that the company offers a range of prices starting from $104 at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and $109 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., which “gives guests the opportunity to visit during periods when they can get even greater value.” The spokesperson also noted that a typical trip to a Disney theme park can last 10 to 16 hours, and that guest experience ratings are trending higher.

“Over 70 years, Disney parks have navigated through many economic cycles like this before,” the spokesperson said. “We firmly believe in a bright future for our business, and we’re committed to investment and expansion around the world.”

To keep Disney parks competitive with rivals, including Universal’s soon-to-open Epic Universe park in Orlando, the company plans to invest $60 billion over 10 years into its experiences division, including a development of at least $1.9 billion at Disneyland Resort .

On Saturday night, company executives unveiled plans for a new “Avatar”-themed section and a new “Coco” boat ride in Disney California Adventure, as well as a villains-themed land in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, “Encanto”- and “Indiana Jones”-themed attractions in Orlando’s Animal Kingdom and a “Monsters, Inc.” land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Many questions remained, including when those attractions would open and where, exactly, in the parks they’d be located, but Josh D’Amaro, chair of the company’s experiences division and a potential successor to current Chief Executive Bob Iger , said all were in some stage of development.

“Disney’s plans are drawn,” he said onstage at Saturday night’s presentation at the Honda Center arena. “This means the dirt is moving.”

The more concrete plan of action was welcomed by fans, who groused at the last D23 convention in 2022 that Disney’s parks presentation was heavy on potential but light on actual details. Some fans said they wanted to see new attractions that would freshen things up. The last thing they want is to feel as if they’re paying more for the same old thing.

Wes Strickland, 27, said the parks have been “pretty stagnant” since the pandemic, which has been “kind of frustrating.”

Disney is “not adding enough in the parks to justify price increases, said Strickland, an Anaheim resident who worked at Disneyland for three years and is an annual pass holder. He also noted the paid line-skipping service, an option that was formerly free, as a concern.

Yet he still goes every other week. The park is too full of memories for him, as it reminds him of visiting as a child and of his first date with his now-fiancee.

“It’s a magical place for us, even though it’s too expensive,” said Strickland, who was wearing a purple button-down festooned with the creepy eyes from the wallpaper in the Haunted Mansion ride. “It’s top bar for theme parks.”

Two friends wear giant replicas of Disney FastPass on their chests at D23 fan convention.

Wearing torso-sized replicas of the now-discontinued Disney FastPasses over their chests, longtime friends Ryan Wenzel and Allie Ring have resigned themselves to higher prices.

“I feel like inflation is everywhere,” said Wenzel, 31, from Chicago, wearing a giant replica of a FastPass for the Haunted Mansion ride. “I’ve always gotten the value out of the parks that I expect.”

“Everything has gotten more expensive,” added Ring, 31, who wore a Jungle Cruise FastPass.

The two, who have been best friends since high school and visit Disney parks multiple times a year, said they understood that Disney had to enact some changes in the parks. But the company seemed open to guest feedback, they said, citing adjustments to its paid line-skipping feature.

Others, though, voiced some frustration with recent visits to Disney theme parks, noting a particular feeling of being aggressively marketed to with merchandise.

“Buy ‘Coco’ stuff. Buy Avengers stuff. Buy ‘Avatar’ stuff,” said Marie Santos, 37, of San Francisco. Santos suggested a simple remedy for the company’s challenges: “Make new attractions.”

But the parks still hold a particular draw for Disney superfans, particularly at D23.

At a cosplay photo meet-up on Saturday, a cluster of people dressed up as the iconic Spaceship Earth ride at Epcot, an ax-wielding bride from the Haunted Mansion and unnamed animatronic characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. One woman in a nightgown lugged around her own green shutters, cosplaying as a character in the ride who shouts to a man named Carlos.

That nostalgia keeps devotees coming back.

Darryl Paltao, 33, said that as the price of his annual pass price has gone up, he’s had to crunch the numbers to make sure he gets to Disneyland at least six times a year to get his money’s worth. He bemoaned some of the changes over the years to the parks, such as the advent of the pandemic-era reservation system that ended his spontaneous visits to Disneyland after, say, a dinner at Downtown Disney.

But he keeps coming back because it reminds him of family trips, when his grandfather would push him down Main Street in a stroller.

“It always brings back memories,” said Paltao, a Foster City resident.

He said he’d deal with the consequences to his wallet later.
