Federal lawmakers tour marjory stoneman douglas high school.

Terry Spencer , Associated Press

Christina Vazquez , Reporter

PARKLAND, Fla. – Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick spent years as an FBI agent and federal prosecutor, but he was shaken Monday by a tour of the building at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 teens and staff members were gunned down nearly six years ago.

The Pennsylvania Republican and five other House members saw the blood-stained floors, the bullet-pocked walls, the shattered glass and the wilted flowers and balloons that remain from the Valentine’s Day 2018 massacre. They also spoke with loved ones who were left behind and are now advocates for stronger national gun laws and school safety programs.

“There are no words to describe the feelings that go through you walking those halls. I cannot even begin to imagine how the families feel when they’re walking through,” said Fitzpatrick, the only GOP member who took Monday’s tour.

U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman, D-New York, another member of the delegation, said the tour presents an “important lesson for all of us to learn.”

“What Congressman Moskowitz had spearheaded in Florida with red flag laws and raise-the-age laws still needs to be translated on a federal level, because we are still having the exact same problems far beyond Florida,” Goldman said. “I’m eager to see the very powerful and a time capsule that this the 1200 building is.”

Monday marked the second time House members have toured the three-story building, following a group of six Democrats and three Republicans who visited in August. The building — set to be demolished in the summer — and its contents were kept intact as evidence. The murderer, Nikolas Cruz, received a life sentence .

The congressional tours were organized by freshman Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Stoneman Douglas graduate whose district includes Parkland. He hopes visiting the building, which he called a “time capsule,” will create momentum in the House to pass measures that will prevent mass shootings and mitigate those that do happen.

“It’s important to see, unfortunately, what it looks like when a mass shooting comes to your high school, when your high school is turned into a war zone,” Moskowitz said.

But he conceded that any changes to the nation’s gun laws will likely be incremental, if they happen at all. Moskowitz said he would work to bring more lawmakers to the school if there is interest but that no other tours with House members are planned before the demolition.

Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter Jaime died in the shooting, said he is angry that Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, both Republicans, did not attend either tour, though they were invited.

“They should have been here and they’re not. This was set up as a bipartisan educational effort to show people what happened in that school almost six years ago. Why 17 people, my daughter included, and so many others in this room’s loved ones included, why they were killed in a preventable act of gun violence,” Guttenberg said. He has become an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws, including a bill that would require background checks for ammunition, not just guns.

Scott’s office sent Local 10 News a statement, noting that he was in Ecuador on Monday as part of a congressional delegation. The full statement can be read below:

“Senator Scott is out of the country on official Senate travel to meet with the high ranking Ecuadorian officials, including President Lasso and President-elect Noboa. Since the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Senator Scott has worked side-by-side with Parkland families, many of whom he has grown incredibly close with, to create change for safer schools and communities in Florida and across the country. As then-Governor of Florida, he was on the ground that day leading the response to this tragedy and attending funerals with these families in the days that followed. He worked with them to propose and sign into law landmark legislation, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, less than one month after the shooting, that also authorized the demolition of the school and construction of a new facility. It is the Parkland community and these families that fuel his fight to keep advocating for policies like his School Guardian Act, EAGLES Act and Luke and Alex School Safety Act to keep kids safe at school like making sure there is an officer in every school across America - just like he did in every Florida public school after Parkland. He will never stop fighting to keep our kids safe.” McKinley Lewis, Communications Director for U.S. Senator Rick Scott

He was governor in 2018 and spent several days in Parkland after the shooting. He also signed a bill weeks later that raised the state’s age limit for purchasing a gun from 18 to 21 and instituted its “red flag” law, which requires that people deemed to be a danger to themselves or others by police and a judge to temporarily give up their guns.

Rubio’s spokesperson did not respond to a phone call or email seeking comment.

Cruz, a former Stoneman Douglas student, stalked the building for nearly seven minutes, firing almost 140 shots with an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle. He pleaded guilty in 2021 and received his life sentence last year after a jury could not unanimously agree he deserved the death penalty.

Max Schachter, whose 14-year-old son Alex died in the shooting, said it is important for government officials to see that even small changes such as making classroom doors and windows bullet-resistant could save lives. Alex died from shots Cruz fired through the window in his classroom’s door. Schachter gave up his insurance agency after his son’s death to become a full-time advocate.

“Every member of Congress we bring through this building is another step we are taking toward making schools safer,” he said.

Broward County Schools says about 300 people have toured the building since the first group in July — relatives of the victims, elected officials and their aides, and law enforcement and school safety officials.

Usually, tickets are distributed by the National Park Service at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion on 15th and E streets NW on each tour day beginning at 9 a.m. Review the announcement for specific details.

Will I still be able to see the White House without going on a tour?

Ludvig Aberg ties 72-hole scoring record for first PGA Tour win

  • Associated Press

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Ludvig Åberg added to his astonishing second half of the year when he closed with a second straight 9-under 61 on Sunday to win the RSM Classic, his first PGA Tour title to go along with a European tour victory and a winning debut in the Ryder Cup.

And to think the 24-year-old Swede was still at Texas Tech six months ago.

"Beyond my dreams," Aberg said. "It's been six months I'll never forget."

Not only did he win the final event of the PGA Tour season, but he did it in record fashion. His final birdie allowed Aberg to tie the 72-hole scoring record on the PGA Tour, matching the 253 of Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open.

His 61-61 finish set the tour record for lowest closing 36 holes, beating by 1 the mark shared by Matt Jones at Kapalua in 2022 and Patrick Rodgers at Sea Island in 2019.

"The sky's the limit," said Mackenzie Hughes , who gave Aberg a spirited battle with a 63 and couldn't keep up. "He's got the whole package. Got a good demeanor, doesn't get too up or down. I'm sure we're going to see a lot of him for the next few years."

Aberg seized control with three straight birdies, one of them when he fearlessly drove over the marsh on the 407-yard fifth hole to 30 feet, and then held off Hughes, a hard-luck victim. Hughes shot 60-63 on the weekend and finished 4 shots behind.

Even after making his only bogey of the week, on the 12th hole of the Seaside course at Sea Island, Aberg answered every challenge.

He was 2 shots ahead when Hughes hit a nifty pitch to tap-in range for birdie on the 15th. Aberg was in the middle of a deep bunker with a tight pin and splashed that out to 4 feet for a matching birdie.

He all but clinched it with a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th, and for good measure he rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the end to put his name in the record book.

Aberg gave a brief, sweeping fist pump when the last birdie putt fell, a rare display of emotion. He said he considers being in contention a privilege, and he looks the part with a sweet smile and a killer instinct.

"This is what you dream of as a kid," Aberg said. "This is the sport I love and am going to love for a long time. If you told me this a couple of months ago, I would not believe you. To be in this position, I need to pinch myself in the arm."

It was the shot on the par-4 fifth, which bends hard to the right around the marsh, that stuck with Hughes.

"He's kind of the modern-day player. I mean, No. 5 is probably the prime example of that," Hughes said. "I'm playing left of that bunker and he flies it on the green and two-putts for birdie. So, super impressive shot to not only hit it long but to hit that straight."

Aberg was assured of a PGA Tour card for 2024 as the No. 1 player from the PGA Tour University ranking after his senior year at Texas Tech.

In the 14 tournaments he has played since June -- three on the European tour -- he has won on the PGA Tour and has three other top-10s, including a playoff loss. He didn't finish worse than a tie for 10th on the European tour, winning the European Masters in Switzerland to all but seal his spot on the Ryder Cup team.

Aberg and Viktor Hovland teamed at Marco Simone for a 9-and-7 foursomes win over Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka , a Ryder Cup record for margin of victory.

The victory at Sea Island moves him to No. 32 in the world. He earned a spot at the Masters, along with a spot at Kapalua in The Sentry to start the year. He also would appear to be a shoo-in for PGA Tour rookie of the year. The other top candidate, Eric Cole , played in the final group with Aberg and shot 67 to tie for third with Tyler Duncan (65).

"When he was playing as well as he was, it's going to be hard to catch him," Cole said.

Aberg finished at 29-under 253, breaking by 7 shots the tournament record since it moved to two courses, the par-72 Plantation and the par-70 Seaside.

Ryan Moore picked up a substantial consolation prize. He birdied the 17th and closed with a 65 to tie for eighth, easily enough for him to finish in the top 125 in the FedEx Cup and keep his full card for 2024. He said the nerves were "close to what I felt trying to win a golf tournament coming down the stretch."

Taylor Swift fan dies before 'The Eras Tour' concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ana Clara Benevides Machado was helped by paramedics before dying in a hospital.

A 23-year-old Taylor Swift fan died at her Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, according to the show's organizers in Brazil.

The show's organizers, Time4Fun, confirmed the death of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, in a post on social media.

Benevides Machado felt unwell and was attended to by firefighters and paramedics at the concert. She was taken to the medical station at the Nilton Santos Stadium for first aid. The medical team then transferred her to the Salgado Filho Hospital where she died, after an hour of emergency care, Time4Fun said in a statement in Portuguese.

Swift announced on social media that Saturday's show would be postponed "due to the extreme temperatures in Rio." Expressing that "the safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and will always come first."

Temperatures reached a high of 105 degrees on Friday, with a heat index of 123 degrees, according to Radar Meteorológico do Sumaré. Brazil has been experiencing a heat wave unusual for the spring, according to the National Meteorological Institute.

In a handwritten note shared on her social media Friday evening, Swift said she had a "shattered heart."

"I can't believe I'm writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this. There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young," Swift said.

"I'm not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil," Swift added.

The show's organizers, Time4Fun, said on Instagram that Ana Clara Benevides Machado was attended by paramedics after feeling unwell. She was taken to the stadium's first aid center, then to a hospital, where she died an hour later, according to a statement.

In a social media post online , Time4Fun said that due to recent events, they would allow concertgoers to bring in personal water bottles and food, cautioning people to pay attention to their bodies for signs of exhaustion.

Organizers also said free water distribution points will be set up and there will be eight medical posts at the remaining shows.

Swift's "The Eras Tour" had scheduled shows in Brazil on Nov. 17, 18 and 19, at the Nilton Santos Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, and then will head to Allianz Parque, São Paulo, for shows scheduled on Nov. 24, 25 and 26.

‘Big as the What?’: Drake Recruits J. Cole for 2024 It’s All a Blur Tour

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Drake and J. Cole are keeping their collaborative hot streak going into the new year. Beginning in January, the two rappers will split the bill on the 2024 It’s All a Blur – Big as the What? tour. Drake is currently scheduled for 32 shows together, including several two-night stands in many cities, with J. Cole performing at most of them.

The tour will begin on Jan. 18 with back-to-back nights at Denver’s Ball Arena. Drake and J. Cole will make additional stops in San Antonio, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Tampa, Nashville, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland, Buffalo, Lexington, and more. J. Cole will not perform at the final four shows of the tour, scheduled in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Alabama.

The newly announced dates mark an extension of the 50-date It’s All a Blur tour Drake completed this summer with 21 Savage. During the Montreal stop in July, J. Cole joined Drake on stage in place of 21 Savage. And before the run of shows kicked off earlier this year, Drake served as a special guest at the 2023 iteration of J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival in April.

Jordan Spieth fills Rory McIlroy’s spot on PGA Tour board

what id tour

Jordan Spieth will join the PGA Tour’s influential policy board, filling the vacancy created when Rory McIlroy abruptly resigned his position last week.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan sent a letter to players Monday morning sharing the news. Spieth was chosen for the opening by the other five players on the board: Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson.

Spieth, 30, will finish McIlroy’s term, which expires at the end of 2024. That means he’s poised to play a major role in helping sort out the tour’s direction. The organization is in the midst of negotiations with several potential investors , including Fenway Sports Group, which could help financially safeguard the tour’s long-term future. It also is still in discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund over a proposed partnership that was initially announced in June.

Spieth, a three-time major champion, previously served on the policy board from 2019 to 2021, after spending two years on the tour’s player advisory council.

McIlroy emerged as a leading voice for players in recent years and was among the most vocal critics of LIV Golf, the Saudi-funded rival circuit. He resigned from the board Nov. 14, one day after the policy board discussed the tour’s future and investor options at its quarterly meeting in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

With no Saudi deal in place, PGA Tour considers new investors

“I just think I’ve got a lot going on in my life between my golf game, my family and my growing investment portfolio, my involvement in TGL [a new golf league], and I just felt like something had to give,” McIlroy told reporters at the DP World Tour Championship last week in Dubai. “I just didn’t feel like I could commit the time and the energy into doing that.

“I don’t mind being busy,” he continued, “but I just like being busy doing my own stuff. Something had to give, and there’s guys that are on that board that are spending a lot more time and a lot more energy on it than I am. It’s in good hands, and I felt like it was the right time to step off.”

The 12-person policy board is composed of six players and six independent directors.

At its meeting last week, the board “agreed to continue the negotiation process in order to select the final minority investor(s) in a timely manner,” Monahan told players in a memo. The tour is expected to take on investors to partner in the launch of PGA Tour Enterprises, a new for-profit entity that would oversee the commercial-related business of the PGA Tour and potentially LIV Golf. Monahan told players the tour is still in discussions with the PIF about its role in PGA Tour Enterprises, saying that “progress has been deliberate.”

The tour and the Saudis have until the end of the year to reach a deal under terms of their initial framework agreement, but that deadline could be pushed back.

Ludvig Åberg’s runaway win at The RSM Classic foreshadows the future

Ludvig Åberg’s runaway win at The RSM Classic foreshadows the future

Change Text Size

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia. – There is an incredible simplicity to Ludvig Åberg’s game. If asked to render the ideal golf swing, artificial intelligence would generate something similar to Åberg’s action. His move is so textbook that it lacks idiosyncrasy. In an era where players will twist, turn and push in any direction to squeeze out an extra mile per hour of clubhead speed, Åberg’s swing is devoid of strain. His metronomic tempo never wavers, and his club never strays from the ideal plane.

A golf swing is like a fingerprint. Each player has a unique characteristic that makes him or her recognizable from hundreds of yards away. What sets Åberg apart is the absence of any such identifying trait.

He also plays quickly, decisively and without emotion. His comportment mirrors his swing, possessing an elegant intensity. It is not a forced stoicism. He is placid as he plays.

“I always felt he looked like Adam Scott, kind of a tall, dark and handsome guy that swings it pretty effortlessly,” said Greg Sands, his college coach at Texas Tech. “He has the ability to take over a golf course.”

All of these gifts, both tangible and intangible, are the reason Åberg was one of the most-hyped prospects to exit the collegiate game in years. He quickly proved all the attention was for good reason, and it came to the climax in the PGA TOUR’s season finale for 2023.

Åberg won The RSM Classic on Sunday in record-setting fashion, shooting 29-under 253 (67-64-61-61) to win by four shots over Mackenzie Hughes. Åberg tied the lowest 72-hole total in TOUR history, matching the winning score of Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii, and set the record for lowest score over a tournament’s final two rounds. His final 54 holes also set a TOUR record for lowest score over three consecutive rounds.

Ludvig Åberg captures first PGA TOUR win at The RSM Classic

“It’s been so much fun,” Åberg said. “I still pinch myself in the morning when I wake up to … realize that this is what I do for a job.”

He's quickly fulfilled the potential he showed as an amateur. He and Jon Rahm are the only players to win multiple Ben Hogan Awards. They both won the award for the top player in collegiate and amateur golf twice. Rahm is the only European to spend more time atop the World Amateur Golf Rankings, which debuted in 2007. Åberg was the No. 1 player in PGA TOUR University’s Class of 2023 , becoming the first player to earn direct access to the PGA TOUR through that program.

“I think the whole concept of winning a tournament, I just fell in love with it,” Åberg said Sunday. “I just absolutely love it. There's something very weird and special about it. You know, you just want to do it again and again and again.”

His decision to stay in school for an additional season, and resist the temptation to turn pro, is an example of the patience and maturity that has served Åberg well as a pro, said Peter Hanson, the former Ryder Cup player and six-time winner on the DP World Tour who serves as his coach and mentor.

"I think it is easy when you are young to rush things," Hanson said. "You see the pro career being so tempting. He has been very patient. He wanted to be well prepared when he came out. I think he has proved that."

He's now firmly ensconced in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking and also cracked the top 60 in the FedExCup in just 11 TOUR starts as a pro. He has qualified for the season-opening The Sentry and the Masters, which will be his first major championship. He also qualified for two additional Signature Events, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, by finishing in the top 60 of the FedExCup at the conclusion of the FedExCup Fall.

Ludvig Åberg's closing birdie to secure the win is the Shot of the Day

He's made it look simple, and that is by design. Åberg is built in the modern mold but with an old soul. Like Scott, he is selective with his words and not known for showing emotion. He doesn’t have an X (formerly known as Twitter) account and there are just 64 posts on his Instagram. Sands grew accustomed to Åberg taking a few hours to respond to texts about non-urgent matters. Åberg records his introspections in a journal, writing his thoughts in both Swedish and English in college so that Sands could understand them.

“He has a good idea of how he wants things. He wants to keep things simple. When things are simple around him, he seems to be in a good spirit and plays well,” said Hanson.

Åberg’s ability off the tee makes things easier, as well. His muscular, 6-foot-3 frame helps him combine distance and accuracy in an unmatched manner. He is second on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and sixth in Driving Distance (317.1 yards). He also hits 65% of his fairways, an incredible amount for someone who hits the ball as far as he does. He ranks 27th in Driving Accuracy this season.

This week, Åberg led the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, was second in Driving Distance (309.5 yards), fifth in Greens in Regulation and sixth in Driving Accuracy. He missed just 10 fairways and 10 greens this week. He made just one bogey.

“He just looks robotic, and I mean that in a good way,” said TOUR veteran Stewart Cink, a vice captain for the U.S. at this year’s Ryder Cup. “He’s obviously got a really strong sense of self-belief and fortitude to go with that. That’s what’s missing sometimes from the ones who don’t turn out to be great.”

Ludvig Åberg’s interview after winning The RSM Classic

There is a Starbucks a couple miles from Sea Island Golf Club that serves as an informal social hub for the TOUR’s traveling circus during The RSM Classic.

The coffee joint’s proximity to the course, early-morning hours and the quaint vibe of the small coastal town that hosts the TOUR’s season finale all make it an easy place for players, caddies and coaches to frequent. One day earlier this week, two PGA TOUR winners were seated at a table, pondering their futures in the game after failing to retain their fully-exempt status.

While considering what awaited their careers, they started discussing the player who looks like he’ll be a large impediment to any players who want to make a living by collecting trophies.

“There is not a world where we could beat Ludvig Åberg on a consistent basis,” one player said. The other admitted that he didn’t know much about Åberg when the Swede turned pro this summer. He learned quickly, saying that after his first six holes with Åberg he thought he was looking at the “next (expletive) Tiger Woods.”

There was slight hyperbole in the statement. Comparisons to Woods are always dangerous. But Åberg has established himself as a rare talent.

“I don’t try to copy anyone. I don’t try to emulate anyone,” Åberg said. “I just try to play myself and trust that it’s good enough.”
