Business grants are a great way to finance the growth of your nonprofit organization. Unlike small-business loans , these grants provide free access to capital that doesn’t need to be repaid.
However, finding and qualifying for a nonprofit grant can be difficult. You’ll likely face strong competition from other organizations and have to complete time-consuming applications. Plus, nonprofits are often excluded from well-known business grant programs, such as the FedEx Small Business Grant Contest.
Nevertheless, the time and effort may be worth it if you can secure free funding for your nonprofit. Start your search with these options from federal and state governments, charitable foundations and private companies.
How Much Do You Need?
What are grants for nonprofits?
A nonprofit grant is a sum of money awarded to a nonprofit organization that doesn’t need to be repaid. Grants for nonprofits are typically distributed by government agencies, corporations or foundations.
Unlike standard small-business grants , nonprofit grants are often restricted. With a restricted grant, the awarding organization defines how it wants the money to be used, such as to fund research or support a particular project.
Some organizations may also require that your nonprofit meet certain conditions (e.g., following
specific reporting procedures) before you can gain access to your funds.
Unrestricted nonprofit grants, on the other hand, allow you to use your grant money as you see fit. These grants offer ideal flexibility, but they can be more difficult to find.
Government grants for nonprofits
Nonprofits can receive grants from the government at the federal, state and local level. Here are some options to consider.
1. Grants.gov
Grants.gov is a database of federally sponsored grants operated and maintained by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. You can use this database to browse grants issued by over 25 government agencies — and you can even filter specifically for nonprofit funding opportunities.
To get one of these nonprofit grants, you must create an account with Grants.gov, and complete and submit an application. These federal grants tend to have unique qualification requirements, so you’ll want to read through all of the information and confirm you’re eligible before applying.
2. National Endowment for the Arts
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is an independent federal agency that offers arts grants for nonprofits. The organization funds nonprofit arts organizations across the country, providing approximately 2,300 grants annually.
There are a variety of NEA grant options, designed for both small and larger organizations. The Challenge America grant, for example, supports small nonprofits in their efforts to bring arts programs to underserved communities. Grants are set at $10,000 and require a match of cash or contributions.
You can review details about these arts grants on the NEA website and apply on Grants.gov.
3. Economic Development Administration
The Economic Development Administration provides grant resources and houses the Economic Development Directory to help you search for funding opportunities in your state or city.
In New York, for example, you can browse available nonprofit and small-business grants through the Economic Development District website that services your location (e.g., central New York, Hudson Valley, Capital District).
4. Grant databases
You can also use grant databases, like GrantWatch and GrantFinder , to identify federal, state and local opportunities for your nonprofit organization. These types of databases allow you to search and apply for grants all in one place. However, some options require a paid subscription to access everything its platform has to offer.

Foundation grants for nonprofits
Foundations are nonprofit organizations that provide funding to other nonprofits. These organizations can be established by corporations, individuals or families, like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
5. Carnegie Corporation
The Carnegie Corporation offers nonprofit grants in four program areas: education; democracy; international peace and security; and higher education and research in Africa. The corporation does not typically provide general support or unrestricted nonprofit grants.
You must meet the eligibility criteria based on one of the four programs and use the money to fund a qualifying project.
To apply for one of these nonprofit grants, you’ll submit a letter of inquiry using the organization’s online portal. If your letter of inquiry is approved, you’ll be invited to submit a full proposal. The process usually takes four to six weeks.
6. Ford Foundation
The Ford Foundation issues grants to nonprofit organizations that are focused on addressing issues of inequality. These offerings are based on nine program areas, including creativity and free expression; national resources and climate change; and gender, racial and ethnic justice.
You can find current projects that are accepting applications on the foundation’s website and apply based on the instructions for that specific grant.
7. Coca‑Cola Foundation
The Coca-Cola Foundation offers community grants for nonprofits to support initiatives like clean water, economic empowerment, climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
To access one of these funding opportunities, you must first complete an eligibility quiz. If you’re eligible, you can register for the foundation’s online application system. Through this system, you’ll be able to browse and apply for available grants.

8. Walmart Foundation
The Walmart Foundation provides nonprofit grants quarterly through local Walmart and Sam’s Club facilities. These grants range in amounts from $250 to $5,000 and are awarded to local nonprofit organizations to fund projects in their communities.
You can apply for a grant in eight funding areas, including community and economic development; diversity and inclusion; education; and public safety, among others. To get started, you’ll answer an eligibility questionnaire and if you qualify, you’ll be directed to create an account on CyberGrants FrontDoor.
Once you’ve been verified on the CyberGrants platform, you can submit your grant application. The Walmart Foundation allows you to submit a maximum of 25 applications during each yearly grant cycle.
9. Bank of America Charitable Foundation
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation provides grants to nonprofits that are focused on addressing issues related to economic mobility, such as workforce development, education and community development.
Every year, the foundation issues requests for specific grant proposals. In 2023, for example, nonprofit organizations could submit proposals for two categories:
Economic mobility focused on the needs of individuals and families (including jobs and health).
Economic mobility focused on the needs of the community (including affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization and small-business resiliency).
To apply, nonprofits must complete an eligibility quiz before receiving access to the online application portal. Grant categories for 2024 have not yet been announced.
10. Home Depot Foundation Veteran Housing Grants Program
The Home Depot Foundation administers a grant program specifically designed for nonprofits that work to create supportive housing for veterans. Eligible projects include new construction or rehabilitation of multifamily, permanent and supportive veteran housing facilities.
These veteran-focused grants are typically awarded in amounts ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. Although the Home Depot Foundation provides grants to nonprofits across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, it focuses on large cities (populations with over 300,000 people), including Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston and Detroit, among others.
Applications can be submitted online and are accepted year-round. Final determinations are made three times a year. The foundation has not yet released dates of 2024 determinations.
Corporate grants for nonprofits
Many corporations and large companies, like Google and Amazon, issue grants for nonprofits. These programs may offer general financial support, fund individual projects or provide free access to nonprofit tools and services.
11. Amazon Web Services (AWS) Imagine Grant
Amazon offers two annual technology grants for nonprofits through its AWS Amazon Imagine Grant program .
The first grant — the Go Further, Faster Award — is given to innovative nonprofit projects that leverage the cloud. These projects will use the application of advanced cloud services, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning or high-performance computing to create scalable solutions for a specific industry or field.
Winners will receive an unrestricted grant of up to $150,000; up to $100,000 in AWS promotional credit; project implementation guidance from AWS technical specialists; and access to AWS training and support.
The second grant — the Momentum to Modernize Award — offers funding to help nonprofit organizations enhance their operations through technology. Eligible projects might include migrating servers to the cloud or modernizing new and existing applications.
Awardees will receive an unrestricted grant of up to $50,000; up to $20,000 in AWS promotional credit; project implementation guidance from AWS technical specialists; and access to AWS training and support.
To qualify, you must be a nonprofit organization with 501(c) status or equivalent. Applications are accepted once per year through the AWS website.
12. State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Company Grants

Education grants. Funds awarded to programs in higher education, K-12 academic performance and financial literacy, and pathways for college and career success.
Currently, State Farm grant applications are invitation-only once per year. However, if you think your nonprofit has a qualifying project for one of these grants, you can submit a funding request through a form on the State Farm website.
13. Google Ad Grants
Google Ad Grants provide eligible nonprofits with up to $10,000 per month in search ads shown on Google.com. These ads can be used to support marketing efforts, attract donors and recruit volunteers.
To qualify, your nonprofit must be a registered charitable organization with a high-quality website. You can apply for one of these grants through Google for Nonprofits.

14. The Unless Project
The Unless Project is a nonprofit accelerator program designed to assist organizations with limited resources and help them become as successful as possible. The program is run by A Little Better Co, or ALBC, a marketing and public relations firm.
Each year, ALBC chooses four nonprofit organizations, one that falls into each of its four focus areas:
Environmental sustainability.
Human health and wellness.
Social progress and advocacy.
Artistic activism.
These four nonprofits go through a six-month intensive program worth up to $150,000 in services and resources. Each company receives a small cash grant of $2,500, but the majority of value from this program comes from the guidance in strategy, branding, marketing and analysis, among other services from ALBC.
If you think your nonprofit may be a good fit, you can take an eligibility quiz on the ALBC website and then start the application process.
15. Aldi Cares Community Grants
The Aldi Cares Community Grants program offers free funding to nonprofits who focus on addressing diversity, equity and inclusion, food insecurity and children’s health and wellness. These grants are available in amounts ranging from $250 to $5,000.
Aldi accepts grant applications every year between February 1 and December 15. Nonprofits can apply at any time during that period, but can only receive funding once per year. If you’re denied, however, you can reapply for a grant after six months.
Before applying, you must register and receive verification from YourCause, a nonprofit software platform. Once you’re verified, you can submit your application online under the Aldi division closest to your location.
How to find grants for nonprofits
Finding nonprofit grants can be time-consuming — and applications are often competitive. However, if you devote the necessary time and effort, you may be able to secure free funds for your organization.
Use these tips to get started.
Review your mission
You can start by reviewing your nonprofit’s mission and what the organization hopes to achieve. Understanding your mission and goals will help you target the right grantmakers and create a compelling grant proposal.
Refine your search with keywords
Although there are many grants available for nonprofits, not all of them will apply to your organization. You can streamline your research process by searching with the right keywords.
Focus your grant search using keywords that relate to your mission, goals and specific project.
For example, if you’re looking to fund a clean water project, you might include words like “environment,” “sustainability” or “sanitation” in your search.
Narrow down based on location
Location can also help you find suitable grants for your nonprofit. Many community groups offer nonprofit grants specifically to organizations within their state, city or local area.
Your state or local government may issue nonprofit grants as well. It can be helpful to add your location to your online search keywords or go directly to local government sites to see what opportunities may be listed.
Look for organizations with similar values
A foundation or company that has similar values to your nonprofit may offer grants that are well suited to your funding needs.
For example, if your nonprofit focuses on supporting youth in sports, you might look for other organizations that do the same. If one of these companies offers a grant program, you may be more likely to qualify.
Consider hiring a grant writer
Professional grant writers can provide expertise to help you through the search and application process. These writers maintain relationships with foundations and other companies in their area, which allows them to recommend grant options that are suitable for your nonprofit.
Grant writers draft and refine grant proposals, keep track of eligibility requirements and manage deadlines. Using a grant writer will also free up time for your staff and volunteers to work on other projects.

Centene Charitable Foundation Grants
Centene Charitable Foundation
Successful corporate citizenship happens when companies invest in the local organizations that know their communities best. The Centene Foundation works with our local partners on initiatives that focus on inclusion, the whole person and community development.
Centene’s purpose is transforming the health of the community, one person at a time. The Centene Foundation is an essential part of how we pursue this purpose. We achieve measurable impact for the communities we serve through partnerships and philanthropy efforts that invest in initiatives with holistic approaches to dismantling barriers to health.
Areas of Focus
Reflecting Centene’s commitment to the needs of those who rely on government-sponsored health care and to addressing social determinants of health and health equity, preference will be given to initiatives in three distinct areas of focus.
- Healthcare Access
- Social Services
Costco Wholesale Charitable Contributions
Costco wholesale.
Charitable Contributions
Costco Wholesale’s primary charitable efforts specifically focus on programs supporting children, education, and health and human services in the communities where we do business. Throughout the year we receive a large number of requests from nonprofit organizations striving to make a positive impact, and we are thankful to be able to provide support to a variety of organizations and causes. While we would like to respond favorably to all requests, understandably, the needs are far greater than our allocated resources and we are unable to accommodate them all.
Warehouse Donations:
Warehouse donations are handled at the warehouse level - please consult your local warehouse for up-to-date information regarding their donations contacts and review process.
Grant Applications
If the request is under consideration, you may be contacted by staff for any additional information needed. Applications are reviewed within 4-6 weeks, and decisions are made based on several factors, including: type of program; identified community need not otherwise available; indication that evidenced based data will establish measurable results of intended outcomes; community collaboration; broad base of financial support; project budget and operating expenses.
Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Grants
Draper richards kaplan foundation.
The Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation seeks to dramatically improve the lives of people and the world around us through innovative strategies, systems changing approaches, and disrupting technologies. Our goal is to find social entrepreneurs with dynamic ideas and nurture them at the early stages with maximum leverage and total commitment.
Prospects for our portfolio of social enterprises come from a vast field of compelling ideas and dedicated leaders. We concentrate our selection on the capabilities of the founder/leader, the scalability of the model, and the potential impact of the organization on the world.
We have an open application process and accept applications year round. Borrowed from our venture capital legacy we find exceptional entrepreneurs, provide them with 3 years of unrestricted capital (totaling $300,000) and provide rigorous on-going support by joining their board of directors for the 3 years and partnering with the leader to help them to build capacity in their organization and scale their impact.
What We Fund
DRK’s hope is to support outsized impact through entrepreneurs and enterprises that create a transformational paradigm shift to meaningfully address a pressing societal problem affecting people’s lives.
- Organizations addressing a critical social or environmental issue as the focus of their work.
- Founders who intend to expand their impact significantly over time.
- Organizations operating in Africa, Europe, India, Latin America, and the United States.
- Independent nonprofit and impact first, mission-driven for-profit entities, including US 501(c)3 and its non-US equivalents, C corporations, B corporations, and hybrid organizations.
- Fiscally sponsored organizations in select cases where there is a plan to spin out (in our experience, independence creates stronger enabling conditions for growth).
- Your program, product or service is already in the market or in the field.
- You have early indication that your model is having its intended impact.
- Your organization is 3-5 years old (this is not a rule, but a guidepost).
- We believe that full-time leadership from the organization’s founder(s) is critical to an early stage organization’s growth.
- We recognize that going full-time requires resources that you may still be putting together, and if that is the case we are happy to start a conversation with you in the meantime.
- We value diversity of people proximate to the problem at hand and a commitment to foster justice, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices.
Issues include:
- Arts & Culture
- Civic Engagement
- Economic Empowerment
- Energy & Environment
- Environment & Climate Change
- Food & Agriculture
- Social Justice
- Systemic Poverty

Hearst Foundations' Mission
The Hearst Foundations identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States have the opportunity to build healthy, productive and inspiring lives.
Hearst Foundations' Goals
The Foundations seek to achieve their mission by funding approaches that result in:
- Improved health and quality of life
- Access to high quality educational options to promote increased academic achievement
- Arts and sciences serving as a cornerstone of society
- Sustainable employment and productive career paths for adults
- Stabilizing and supporting families
Funding Priorities
The Hearst Foundations support well-established nonprofit organizations that address significant issues within their major areas of interests – culture, education, health and social service – and that primarily serve large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. In each area of funding, the Foundations seek to identify those organizations achieving truly differentiated results relative to other organizations making similar efforts for similar populations. The Foundations also look for evidence of sustainability beyond their support.
The Hearst Foundations fund cultural institutions that offer meaningful programs in the arts and sciences, prioritizing those which enable engagement by young people and create a lasting and measurable impact. The Foundations also fund select programs nurturing and developing artistic talent.
Types of Support: Program, capital and, on a limited basis, general and endowment support
The Hearst Foundations fund educational institutions demonstrating uncommon success in preparing students to thrive in a global society. The Foundations’ focus is largely on higher education, but they also fund innovative models of early childhood and K-12 education, as well as professional development.
Types of Support: Program, scholarship, capital and, on a limited basis, general and endowment support
The Hearst Foundations assist leading regional hospitals, medical centers and specialized medical institutions providing access to high-quality healthcare for low-income populations. In response to the shortage of healthcare professionals necessary to meet the country’s evolving needs, the Foundations also fund programs designed to enhance skills and increase the number of practitioners and educators across roles in healthcare. Because the Foundations seek to use their funds to create a broad and enduring impact on the nation’s health, support for medical research and the development of young investigators is also considered.
Types of Support: Program, capital and, on a limited basis, endowment support
- Social Service
The Hearst Foundations fund direct-service organizations that tackle the roots of chronic poverty by applying effective solutions to the most challenging social and economic problems. The Foundations prioritize supporting programs that have proven successful in facilitating economic independence and in strengthening families. Preference is also given to programs with the potential to scale productive practices in order to reach more people in need.
Types of Support: Program, capital and general support

The Foundation considers applications for grants in the following areas:
- Health care
- Civic and cultural
- Environmental
The categories above are not intended to limit the interest of the Foundation from considering other worthwhile projects. In general, the Foundation guidelines are broad to give us flexibility in providing grants.
The majority of our grants are made in the U.S. However, like Dr. Scholl, we recognize the need for a global outlook. Non-U.S. grants are given to organizations where directors have knowledge of the grantee.

About the Foundation
The Olive Tree Foundation, Inc., is an independent philanthropy established in the United States in 1997.
Our mission: The Olive Tree Foundation strives to support U.S.-based nonprofits that provide food, shelter, medical care and education for those in need; make arts and culture more accessible and equitable; invest in community and youth and adult development; and protect the environment.
Grantmaking Focus
Organizations eligible to apply for grants from The Olive Tree Foundation focus on:
Basic necessities
- We support nonprofits that provide food for the hungry, shelter the indigent and infirm and provide medical (physical and emotional) care to those in need.
Youth education and development
- OTF support nonprofits that develop the academic skills of youth. Key objectives should include character-building; fostering ethics, teamwork, self-esteem and self-confidence; broadening horizons and aspirations; strengthening unique abilities and talents; developing community awareness and involvement; improving academic, communication and interpersonal skills.
Adult education and development
- We support nonprofits that promote literacy and workforce development through various programs that empower adults to become self-sufficient and self-sustaining.
Community development
- We support nonprofits involved in the protection of civil rights and the creation of environmental infrastructures that enhance quality of life in the communities they serve.

Lawrence Foundation Grant
The lawrence foundation.
The Lawrence Foundation is a private family foundation focused on making grants to support environmental, human services and other causes.
The Lawrence Foundation was established in mid-2000. We make both program and operating grants and do not have any geographical restrictions on our grants. Nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or other similar organizations are eligible for grants from The Lawrence Foundation.
Grant Amount and Types
Grants typically range between $5,000 - $10,000. In some limited cases we may make larger grants, but that is typically after we have gotten to know your organization over a period of time. We also generally don’t make multi-year grants, although we may fund the same organization on a year by year basis over a period of years.
General operating or program/project grant requests within our areas of interests are accepted. In general, regardless of whether a grant request is for general operating or program/project expenses, all of our grants will be issued as unrestricted grants.
Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation Grant
Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation
The Foundation will consider requests to support museums, cultural and performing arts programs; schools and hospitals; educational, skills-training and other programs for youth, seniors, and persons with disabilities; environmental and wildlife protection activities; and other community-based organizations and programs.

Nonprofit organization travel expense grants are funds provided without a fee or expectation of repayment from the provider. Sometimes the provider is actually a nonprofit organization, but travel expense grants can be offered by for-profit companies as a kind of donation. Travel expense grants normally cover the cost, or a part of the cost, of transportation, lodging and food.
Reasons for Grants
Nonprofit organization travel expense grants are often given for continuing education opportunities. These opportunities are usually available at conferences or special niche events. While finding nonprofit organization travel expense grants is a relatively easy process, the grants tend to be very competitive. There are often a limited number of travel expense grants available, compared to the number of people searching for them. Knowing where to find nonprofit organization travel expense grants is the first step. Understanding how and when to apply for them is another.
Finding Travel Funding
The first place to check for nonprofit travel expense funding is with the host entity. Usually an organization sponsoring an event will provide a limited number of travel grants that cover only part of the expense. For example, the host organization might waive the entrance fee, or provide hotel accommodations for some participants. In academia, it is not uncommon for students to apply to their university for a travel grant. In the private sector, corporate sponsors often can be found to cover part of the travel expenses. Although grants might be available, it is rare for any one nonprofit organization employee to get the full cost paid by a single source.
Contingent Funding Opportunities
Some nonprofit travel grants are based on something called matching funds. Matching-fund grants are based upon the amount of money the traveler's organization is willing to invest in the trip. For example, a 50 percent matching-fund grant means the granting organization will put up 50 cents for every dollar the grantee organization puts up. While the percentage can vary by grant, the concept remains the same. Some matching-fund grants will allow the applicant to use grants from other organizations as part of the matching funds. This also varies from grant to grant.
Finding Participating Donors
In addition to applying for established nonprofit travel expense grants, organizations can establish a travel fund. Continuing education and travel are often part of a budget's general fund, but sponsors sometimes may be found who will fund, or partially fund, a particular continuing education opportunity. Cultivating this kid of donation will require an explicit demonstration of how the travel opportunity will further a nonprofit organization's mission.

Phoenix awards more than $300,000 in grants to 55 applicants for park events
Posted: November 20, 2023 | Last updated: November 20, 2023
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board on Thursday approved 55 applications, totalling nearly $327,000 for its new Park Activation Neighborhood Grant Program.
Context: The program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and provides funding for nonprofit and neighborhood groups to hold events at local parks.
- Applicants were eligible for grants of $1,000-$10,000 for events including movies, concerts, food truck festivals, youth sports, farmers markets, safety and community celebrations.
- The parks largely serve residents of low-income census tracts with high percentages of households who live below the poverty line.
- The events must be free, or at least have free components.
Zoom in: The city received 161 applications with over $1.3 million in requests from Aug. 21 through Oct. 6.
- The program had only $332,000 available for applicants, so an internal committee evaluated them to ensure the greatest number of grants were awarded citywide in a fair and balanced way, parks director Cynthia Aguilar wrote to the board.
- Some are one-time events, while others are recurring, parks spokesperson Adam Waltz told Axios Phoenix.
Between the lines: Winning applicants included:
- A spring festival at El Oso Park hosted by the Estrella Super Moms Block Watch
- A farmers market at Esteban Park hosted by Roots For Life in the Community
- A twice-a-year youth sports event at Edison Park hosted by Rising Families Inc.
- The Arizona Informant Foundation's 2024 Valley of the Sun Juneteenth celebration at Eastlake Park.
What's next: The city will begin issuing checks in January for the earliest events.
