MetLife Stadium: Travel Guide for a Giants Game in New York

Things to Know When Going to a Giants Game at Met Life Stadium

The Giants own four Super Bowl victories, two coming in recent memory and all of them coming since 1986. They've been playing their football games in MetLife Stadium, which they've been sharing with the Jets since it opened back in 2010. Giants’ tickets aren't that easy to come by because of the locals love for their football team, but there's always a way to get into MetLife Stadium to see a game. Given that the stadium is relatively new, the experience is fresh and the food is some of the best in the league.

Tickets & Seating Areas

Given the history of success for the New York Giants, there aren't many tickets available directly from the team on the primary market. In down years, however, tickets become available, especially late in the season. You can buy tickets through the Giants either online with Ticketmaster , via phone, or at the MetLife Stadium box office. Normally the only tickets available on the primary market are in the 300 (aka Upper) Level, the highest one in the stadium, but sometimes the Club level or Lower Level tickets become available. Ticket prices in the 300 Level generally range from $122 to $142. The Giants don't vary their ticket pricing based on the opponent. If you’re looking for better seats than the Upper Bowl, you’ll have to hit the secondary market. Obviously, you have the well-known options like Stubhub and the NFL Ticket Exchange or a ticket aggregator (think Kayak for sports tickets) like SeatGeek and ‎TiqIQ .

The Giants have four different Club levels. Two are located on the Lower Level with the Toyota Coaches Club behind the Giants sideline and the MetLife 50 Club behind the visitor sideline. Both Club areas include unlimited food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as access to an outdoor deck right behind the teams on their sideline. The Toyota Coaches Club also offers the opportunity to see the Giants’ players head from the locker room to the field. The Chase and Lexus Clubs on the Mezzanine Level offer more comfortable seating and access to a lounge with upscale food options, but you have to pay for your own food. There aren’t really any bad seats in the house across all of the 82,556 capacity, although you’ll be forced to stand up a lot in the lower level corner and end zone seats as fans in front of you do the same to get a better look at the action on the other end of the field.

Getting There

It's very easy to get to MetLife Stadium. Most people are used to driving to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, where MetLife Stadium is located. It’s pretty easy to find off the New Jersey Turnpike or Route 3. Should you drive, don’t forget that you must have a pre-paid parking permit. (If you forget to buy a permit, you’ll have to park off-site and take a shuttle bus to the stadium.) Parking passes for the Giants are only sold on a season-long basis, so you'll need to go to Stubhub or Ticket Exchange to buy parking passes. You generally want to park as far away from the stadium as possible, since it’ll be easier to get out when the game ends. Stick to the south portions of Lots D, E, F, and J for an easy exit.

There are also two public transportation options. Your first option is to take the Coach USA “351 Meadowlands Express.” The bus leaves from 41 st street between 8 th and 9 th Avenues and not from a gate inside the Port Authority Bus Terminal. You can buy tickets inside the Port Authority Bus Terminal for a $10 round trip cost, but there is also an operator selling tickets on the street near the bus. Getting out of the stadium isn’t bad as the bus has direct access to leaving the Meadowlands Sports Complex and each bus leaves as soon as it’s full.

The second option is to take New Jersey Transit . A train service runs from Hoboken to the Meadowlands starting three and a half hours before the game starts and for one to two hours after the game ends. Those in Manhattan can either travel from Penn Station and connect in Secaucus Junction or take the PATH to Hoboken and get on the train there. The round trip cost of the train is $10.50 for an adult and $4.50 for a child or a senior. Just be prepared to wait for a while when leaving the stadium after the game as there’s usually a line to board and a train won’t leave until it’s full.

There aren’t any bars or restaurants around the Meadowlands Sports Complex, so your pre-game fun will come via the old tailgating variety. There is a full list of regulations available , but from that list are a couple key takeaways. The first is that you can’t buy parking passes for two spots next to each other and park in one while using the second for tailgating. All tailgating must happen in the area in front or behind your car. The second is that grills are permitted, but open fires, deep fryers, or any oil-based cooking devices are not. Finally, footballs are allowed, so have a toss in between cars before the game. Parking lots typically open five hours prior to the game.

Those fans who take public transportation to the game can take part in the tailgating experience, set up in the Bud Light corner outside the stadium. Fans can buy a Lobel's steak sandwich or a chicken kabob sandwich and enjoy the feeling of tailgating without all the work.

At the Game

Remember that NFL rules prohibit you from bringing large bags into any stadium. There is a bag check facility between Lots E and G if you forget and need some place to dump your bag if you took public transportation. Umbrellas aren’t allowed in MetLife Stadium either. Small clear, plastic bags are allowed, however, and you can even take food and water into the game. They’ll remove the cap to your bottles that are 20 oz. or smaller.

MetLife Stadium was built with the stadium concession food craze in mind and there are plenty of ways to fill you up at a Giants’ game. A full list of concession options and locations can be found here. The best things going are the Sloppy Joes at the Food Network stand near sections 118 and 338 and the Buffalo Mac ‘n Cheese isn’t bad either. Those in New York City know the name Lobel’s for its meat and their steak sandwich sold near sections 121 and 338 is up there with the Sloppy Joe.

The "Home Food Advantage" food court area between sections 137 and 140 at MetLife Central is a nice touch, offering a wide variety of food carts serving up Asian, Mexican, Italian and other fares. Some of the items are also available at other areas around the stadium. Nonna Fusco's Meatballs sandwich is the most popular item in this area, inspired by the grandmother of MetLife Stadium chef Eric Borgia. Steamed buns filled with pork and chicken, served with Sriracha aioli and pickled slaw isn’t a bad option either. Some people also enjoy the grilled cheese, made with a nice chunk of cheese between two pieces of Texas toast. Bacon on a stick is as great as it sounds with both items being sold at the Classic Stand at MetLife Central.

Where to Stay

Hotel rooms in New York are as expensive as any city in the world, so don't expect to catch a break on pricing. They jump up a bit in the fall during football season, especially the closer you get to the holidays. There are numerous brand name hotels in and around Times Square, but you may be best served not staying in such a highly trafficked location. You're not that bad off as long as you're within a subway ride that takes you near Penn Station.‎ Kayak (a travel pricing aggregator) can help you find the best hotel for your needs. Travelocity offers last minute deals if you're scrambling a few days before you attend the game. Alternatively, you can look into renting an apartment via AirBNB . People in Manhattan always so apartment availability should be reasonable at any time of the year.

The Giants played their first game at MetLife Stadium in September of 2010, ending in a 31-18 victory over the Carolina Panthers.  The capacity of MetLife Stadium is 82,500, and will rank 3rd in size in the NFL.  The new stadium construction costs are estimated at $1.6 billion. In 2013 the stadium played host to WrestleMania XIX and in 2014 the venue was the home for Super Bowl XLVIII.  In just a few short years this state of the art facility has captured the excitement of some of the most popular events in the country.

The Fanvan Party Bus's maiden voyage was back in 2009 for the last few games at the original stadium.  The bus was purchased from a decommissioned fleet of municipal buses from a township in Delaware and it was going to be used as a transport vehicle for just a few friends to get to and from the stadium.  We ripped it apart and put it back together from top to bottom, added 6 TV's, a stereo system, a massive power inverter system and turned into the tailgate machine that it has evolved into today.

We started bringing it to each and every giants game and watched as everyone around us, including ourselves would setup and breakdown a tailgate each and every week.  it was then i realized there was a need for a service to provide the "tailgate" experience to our local fans, and somewhere around 2010 the fanvan party bus was born., back in 2012 a friend who was a die hard ny jets fan asked if we would bring the bus to a jets game and we did.  we saw that the need for a "tailgate" experience also existed for jets fans, thus, our fanvan party bus jets tailgates began., we would be approached weekly from fans from around the world asking us if we were "opposing team friendly".  another concept was born, and we became a "friendly space" for opposing teams to come and enjoy our ny/nj hospitality.  we try to cater our specialty menu items to our opposing fan base.  opposing team fans are very welcomed at our tailgates., i couldn't keep up with the wide variety and variations of music, if i was playing country, someone wanted rap, if i was playing rap, they wanted rock, etc.  thus our dj concept evolved.  each and every week you are entertained by one of our kick a$$ dj's, chopper bob, dj tara, dj chef, dj mc rican or dj eclipse., people would ask me every week if we had anything "healthy".  do you have gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, etc.  alas, another concept was born.  we have a wide variety of vegetarian & vegan items that are specially prepared with  your health in mind on our menu each and every week., let us not forget about our shirtless worm who braves the weather and brings smiles to faces from around the world.., we are here at metlife stadium 16+ weeks a year, in the rain, sleet, hail, snow and frozen tundra supporting our ny giants and ny jets football teams, and providing you, the football fan, with a very unique experience that can be only be found at the g-spot.  (new g-spot location l-18), we are innovators, not imitators., we are your fanvan party bus.  we bring the party.
