Arrival and Departure at Holland America

The Holland America Fort Lauderdale terminal normally has a quick and easy embarking process. Guests will be required to show their cruise credentials and a legitimate form of identification when they arrive at the terminal. Given that check-in can take some time, especially during busy travel times, it is crucial to be at the terminal well before the ship departs.

Guests will move to the security screening area after presenting and having all required documents examined. Here, visitors must go through a metal detector and have their luggage inspected and examined. It is crucial to remember that some things, like guns and illegal substances, are absolutely forbidden aboard the ship and will be seized if they are discovered during the security check.

After going through security, travelers will go to the check-in desk to receive their stateroom assignment. The cruise card, which functions as both a key to the stateroom and a means of payment on the ship, will also be distributed to the passengers at this time.

Visitors are free to board the ship and explore all of its amenities after the check-in procedure is complete. The crew of the ship will be available to answer any queries or address any issues.

The process of disembarking is equally simple. Guests will be required to pack their belongings and put them outside of their staterooms on the last day of the voyage so that the crew may pick them up. Guests will be given a disembarkation time in the morning and instructed to leave their stateroom by that time.

Guests are allowed to roam the ship after leaving their stateroom until it’s time to disembark. When it’s time to leave the ship, passengers need to follow the directions to the terminal building, where they can go through security and customs before leaving.

Amenities and Facilities at the Holland America Terminal

A variety of facilities and services are available at the Holland America Fort Lauderdale terminal to make boarding and disembarking as easy and comfortable as possible.

The check-in desk, where passengers can register for their cruise and obtain their stateroom assignment, is one of the terminal’s primary facilities. Before boarding the ship, passengers can check their luggage in the terminal’s baggage handling section.

Along with these useful features, the terminal provides a number of relaxing seating places where visitors can unwind before or after their trip. Additionally, there are numerous options for food and drink, including a coffee shop and a snack bar.

Additionally, there are restrooms and changing areas in the terminal as well as a store where visitors may buy souvenirs and last-minute things.

Excursions At the Holland America

The extensive selection of excursions and shore activities provided is one of the highlights of a Holland America cruise. Visitors can select from a range of excursions at the Fort Lauderdale terminal, including tours of the neighborhood, water sports, and cultural events.

The Everglades National Park Tour , which leads visitors through the wetlands and woodlands of the Everglades, is a well-liked trip. Visitors will have the chance to see a variety of species, including alligators, birds, and other creatures that live in the Everglades, on this tour.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America ship

Gene Sloan

Of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Holland America is the brand most known for far-flung, globe-circling itineraries.

You'll find Holland America ships in almost every corner of the world at some point during the year, operating itineraries that are unusual in their diversity of routes and specific port calls.

Still, the line's heaviest presence by far is in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. In a typical summer, the line will deploy around half of its vessels to Europe while sending the other half to Alaska. The two regions are often the line's entire focus for summers.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

During the winter, the line will move at least half of these ships to the Caribbean, while also sending some on far-reaching voyages across the world to Asia, Australia and South America.

For the coming winter, seven of the line's 11 ships are scheduled to sail in the Caribbean, and there will be at least one ship each in Asia, Australia and South America. There also will be one ship operating an epic, around-the-world voyage — a long tradition at the line.

In all, Holland America ships sail to 98 countries, hitting all seven continents. They visit more than 470 different ports and cruise destinations. These are much larger numbers than found with such rival lines as Celebrity Cruises . The latter boasts voyages to around 300 ports in 79 countries .

Among Holland America's itineraries, you'll find everything from one-night sampler cruises between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., to 128-night around-the-world voyages that feature stops at dozens of countries. That's a much broader range than most other big lines, including Celebrity, Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line .

Whether you're looking for a quick getaway or an epic voyage, you can't go wrong with these five top Holland America cruise destinations.

Some of Holland America's most popular itineraries are in Europe, where the line has traditionally been a significant player. In a typical year, Holland America will deploy around half of its vessels to the region from spring until fall, making Europe one of its biggest focuses for more than half the year.

The itineraries that Holland America offers in Europe are wide-ranging, with a diverse set of routings in both the Mediterranean as well as across Northern Europe.

In the Mediterranean, sailings include everything from seven- to 28-night voyages that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona, Spain, and Rome, Florence and Naples, Italy, on a single cruise.

Some Holland America cruises in the Mediterranean also include visits to Istanbul and Kusadasi in Turkey (the latter a gateway to the famed ruins of Ephesus), and Haifa and Ashdod in Israel (for visits to Jerusalem and other iconic destinations in the country).

In Northern Europe, Holland America will take you to such well-known Baltic cities as Stockholm, Sweden; Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; and St. Petersburg, Russia, in a single sailing (note that Holland America's calls in St. Petersburg are on hold for now due to the war in Ukraine). There also are itineraries that will bring you to Iceland, Greenland and the Norwegian fjords.

Among the longest sailings Holland America offers in Europe is a 35-night "British Isles, Spitsbergen & Iceland Fjords Explore" trip that brings a complete circumnavigation of England and Scotland, several stops along the coast of Norway, and calls in both Iceland and the Norwegian-controlled Arctic island of Spitsbergen.

In Northern Europe, Holland America ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands (a nod to the company's Dutch heritage) and Copenhagen, Denmark.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy; and Piraeus (the port for Athens).

2. Caribbean and The Bahamas

holland america cruises address

You usually won't find a single Holland America ship in the Caribbean and the Bahamas over the summer, when the line turns its focus to sailings in Europe and Alaska. However, come winter, Holland America will reposition quite a few of its vessels to the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings.

For the coming winter, for instance, Holland America currently has seven of its 11 vessels scheduled to sail in the regions — including its two newest and biggest ships, the 2,660-passenger Rotterdam and the 2,650-passenger Nieuw Statendam.

Holland America offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from a single home port in the regions — Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades .

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick, three-night cruises out of Port Everglades to its private island in the Bahamas, Half Moon Cay. The line also offers four- and five-night voyages out of Port Everglades to the Bahamas and Key West, Florida. However, Holland America is best known for longer sailings in the Caribbean. These include lots of seven-night itineraries to the Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean, but also a large number of even longer, 10- to 21-nights Caribbean voyages.

The latter trips offer the chance to see a broader mix of Caribbean islands than is typical on Caribbean sailings.

Related: The ultimate guide to Holland America's Mariner Society loyalty program

Among the most elaborate of the itineraries that Holland America offers out of Port Everglades, for instance, is a 21-day "Southern Caribbean Wayfarer/Seafarer" voyage that brings calls at the islands of St. Martin (specifically, to the Dutch side of the island known as St. Maarten), St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, Hispaniola (for a visit to the Dominican Republic), Bonaire, Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The voyage is actually a combination of two shorter, back-to-back sailings that are designed without repeating ports.

holland america cruises address

Holland America is particularly known for voyages to Alaska, where it dominates the market for cruises along with sister line Princess Cruises.

In recent years, Holland America has deployed as many as eight ships to Alaska in the summer — far more than most other lines. In the wake of a significant downsizing over the past two years , the line is cutting that number back a bit. However, it's still planning on deploying at least six vessels to Alaska in the coming summers — a huge number.

Holland America also operates its own wilderness lodges in Alaska, as well as tourist trains and buses. It uses the lodges, trains and buses to offer an extensive range of nine- to 14-night Alaska "cruisetours" that combine a cruise with land-based touring.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to September. For 2022, Holland America plans to deploy six ships to the Alaska market:

  • Eurodam : The 2,104-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; Icy Strait Point, Alaska; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Koningsdam : The 2,650-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Oosterdam. Like Eurodam, the 2,388-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Hubbard Glacier for glacier viewing.
  • Zuiderdam . Like Koningsdam, the 1,916-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Nieuw Amsterdam: The 2,106-passenger ship will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing, as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.
  • Noordam : Like Nieuw Amsterdam, the 1,924-passenger vessel will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam is that they can be combined with stays at the Holland America lodges mentioned above to create the longer "cruisetours" of Alaska that combine a one-way cruise with a land tour.

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks. Holland America is also unique among cruise lines in offering cruisetours that include a land tour into the Yukon Territory of Canada.

4. Panama Canal

Have you always wanted to experience a transit through the Panama Canal? Among major cruise lines, Holland America has one of the biggest array of sailings through the waterway.

In a typical year, the line will operate more than two dozen voyages to the canal, some of which are round-trip sailings from Florida's Port Everglades while others are one-way trips between Fort Lauderdale and San Diego, California.

In the case of the former sailings, Holland America ships only transit part-way through the canal after entering it through the Gatun Locks on its Caribbean side. Such trips typically include a transit into the canal through the locks, cruising in the canal to Gatun Lake and a transit out of the canal through the locks before a stop at nearby Colon, Panama.

Among the shore excursions available from the port of Colon is a bus tour to see the locks in action from observation areas on land.

Other port calls during such Panama Canal cruises typically include the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curacao; Cartagena, Colombia; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica.

In the case of the one-way voyages between Florida and California, Holland America's ships will make the full journey through the canal's three sets of locks from the Caribbean to the Pacific or vice versa.

Other port calls during such cruises typically include Puerto Vallarta and Hautulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica; and Cartagena, Colombia.

5. The World

holland america cruises address

In addition to focused voyages in a wide range of cruise destinations from Europe to Alaska, Holland America has long been known for epic around-the-world voyages that include stops at dozens of destinations in four, five or even six continents.

These trips typically take place on the line's smaller vessels and can last four months or longer, allowing Americans to travel across the globe without ever getting on an airplane.

Normally, Holland America's around-the-world voyages begin and end at Florida's Port Everglades.

The line plans one such trip for 2023 — a 128-day voyage from Port Everglades starting on Jan. 3, 2023, that includes stops in North America, Australia, Africa and Europe.

Taking place on the 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam, the trip includes a transit of the Panama Canal, multiple stops in French Polynesia including Bora Bora and Moorea; visits to multiple destinations in New Zealand; and calls at Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Gambia and Senegal.

In addition to its around-the-world cruises, Holland America is also known for full circumnavigations of South America that begin and end in Port Everglades.

For 2023, the line plans one such journey — a 74-day cruise on the 1,432-passenger Volendam that starts on Jan. 3, 2023.

Bottom line

Holland America offers an incredibly wide range of itineraries in cruise destinations around the world, from South America to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Holland America itineraries in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. The line is also well-known for voyages through the Panama Canal and for its epic around-the-world cruises. Its annual around-the-world sailings, in particular, are something that sets it apart from other big lines.

1. Holland America Cruises from Trieste

Italy cruises depart from Trieste, a famous seaport for Italy cruises just two hours away by scenic train from Venice. You can train to Venice for the day, too, if you want to spend the day exploring this city's blush facades, wide plazas, and Austrian influence. Located in the untamed beauty of the Karstic plateau and lashed by the Bora wind, Trieste is disorienting - geographically surrounded by Slovenia and far northeast in Italy. Many nicknames have been given to it, including " Vienna by the Sea, " "City of Coffee," and " Gem of the Adriatic, " as a result of its collision with Italian, Austrian-German, Croatian and Greek cultures. At the largest seaside square in Europe, sit and sip coffee before your cruise from Trieste and watch waterfalls tumble down rocky cliffs. The following activities are available on Italy cruises in Trieste.

Best Time to Visit: Between March to August

2. Holland America Cruises from Hong Kong

Your next cruise adventure would be a blast in Hong Kong, a city divided in two. An island and a peninsula separated by a harbor make up this densely populated city off the coast of the South China Sea. There are skyscrapers all over Hong Kong Island. This city has posh restaurants, posh shopping centers, and a very urban and chic population. In terms of history, Hong Kong is both Eastern and Western. Hong Kong became a British territory after the First Opium War in 1839 and 1842. China did not regain sovereignty over the city until 1997. There are still many English-speaking residents, afternoon tea times, and street names reflecting British influence. This unique fusion of East and West can be experienced on a cruise to Hong Kong.

Best Time to Visit: Late September to Late December

3. Holland America Cruises from Quebec City

Quebec City, the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec, offers its visitors history, culture, outdoor activities, delicious food, and beautiful scenery. French and British armies built a stone wall surrounding the Old Town, which contains many of Quebec's sites of interest. You can enjoy the Old World's charm and the natural world's beauty while sailing to Quebec City.

Best Time to Visit: Between April to June or during the Winter season

On Holland America cruises – which depart from U.S. cities like  Boston ,  Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and  San Diego  and can last anywhere from one to 128 days – you can pass the time with enrichment programs like digital photography, cooking demonstrations and mixology workshops, or work up a sweat in spin or Pilates classes before unwinding at the spa.

Though they vary by itinerary, Holland America Line's shore excursions are primarily adult-oriented, with activities ranging from animal encounters to bike tours and even helmet diving. Meanwhile, Holland America Line's dining style allows flexibility when it comes to mealtimes. You can mingle with fellow passengers over a five-course dinner in the main Dining Room, sample fresh seafood in the Pinnacle Grill or take advantage of 24-hour room service.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.

Holland America Line’s 2025-2026 South America and Antarctica Cruises Feature Iconic Sites and UNESCO Experiences

Cruises range from 14 to 22 days and stretch from the Panama Canal down to Antarctica

Seattle, Wash., Nov. 13, 2023 — Bookings are now open for Holland America Line’s 2025-2026 South America and Antarctica season. Featuring a series of longer cruises up to 22 days, guests can experience the region’s captivating blend of diverse cultures, breathtaking natural landscapes and rich historical heritage — including 16 UNESCO World Heritage sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

From November 2025 through March 2026, Oosterdam cruises between San Antonio (Santiago), Chile, and either Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The itineraries offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for travelers, showcasing the iconic sites of South America like Iguazu Falls, Machu Picchu and Torres del Paine National Park, along with Antarctica’s memorable scenery and wildlife.

“South America is a vibrant region that offers contrasting experiences within one cruise, sailing from the tropics to glaciers and busy cities to some of the most remote places in the world,” said Dan Rough, vice president, revenue management, Holland America Line. “Our mid-sized ships make it possible to craft itineraries that feature an exciting collection of South American ports; and our menus, enrichment and entertainment on board ensure guests come away feeling deeply connected to the places they visited.”

Highlights of the South America and Antarctica Season aboard Oosterdam:

  • Guests enjoy an overnight visit at Buenos Aires at the beginning or end of each cruise, giving extra time to take in a tango show and experience the nightlife of one of South America’s most vibrant cities.
  • Ports include Puerto Montt, Puerto Chacabuco and Punta Arenas, Chile; Ushuaia, Argentina; Stanley, Falkland Islands; and Montevideo, Uruguay,
  • Scenic cruising includes the Chilean Fjords, Strait of Magellan, Beagle and Cockburn Channels, Glacier Alley and rounding Cape Horn.
  • Departures: Dec. 4, 2025, and Feb. 22 and March 8, 2026.
  • Two nights at Callao (Lima), Peru, allow extra time for guests to take an overland tour to Machu Picchu.
  • An overland tour to the Galapagos Islands is available.
  • Calls in Grand Cayman, Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, with an overnight at Fuerte Amador, Panama.
  • A journey between Atlantic and Pacific oceans with a transit through the lakes and locks of the famed Panama Canal.
  • Departures: Nov. 17, 2025, and March 22, 2026.
  • An overnight visit at Buenos Aires at the beginning or end of the cruise.
  • Calls in Uruguay, Argentina, Falkland Islands and Chile.
  • Four memorable days exploring the vistas of Antarctica, guided by a naturalist who comes on board to point out penguin colonies and whale pods.
  • Scenic cruising in the Chilean fjords, Drake Passage, Beagle Channel and Glacier Alley.
  • Departures: Dec. 18, 2025 (holiday cruise), and Jan. 9 and 31, 2026.

Collectors’ Voyages Combine Back-to-Back Cruises

The “Panama Canal and Inca Discovery” itineraries can be combined with the “South America Passage” cruises to form a 31-day exploration between Fort Lauderdale and Buenos Aires. Merging back-to-back sailings into one Collectors’ Voyage allows guests to create an extended cruise vacation that visits different areas of South America.

An Abundance of UNESCO Sites in South America

Holland America Line 2025–2026 South America cruises visit 16 UNESCO World Heritage sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. This esteemed collection represents the best of human heritage and the natural world: Archaeological Site of Old Panama and Historical District of Panama, the city of Cusco, Machu Picchu, Nazca Lines, Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaiso, Torres del Paine National Park, Alberto de Agostini National Park, Cape Horn, Los Glaciares National Park, Galapagos Islands, Chan Chan Archaeological Zone, Argentina’s Valdes Peninsula, Lima’s Historical Centre, Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento, Iguazu Falls and Iguazu National Park.

Authentic Experiences On Board and Ashore

On South America and Antarctic cruises, Holland America Line brings local flavors on board. Guests enjoy fresh, locally sourced specialties such as Chilean salmon, stuffed empanadas, and world-renowned wines including Malbec, Carménère, Torrontés and more. On immersive shore excursions, guests can visit an indigenous Emberá tribe, meet a real Chilean huaso (cowboy), learn to craft a traditional Panama hat or enjoy an intimate dinner at an Argentine “closed-door restaurant.”

Have It All Early Booking Bonus

For a limited time, when guests book 2025-2026 South America and Antarctica cruises with the Have It All premium package, the standard package amenities of shore excursions (two for 10-20 days; three for 21 days or longer), specialty dining (two for 10-20 days; three for 21 days or longer), a Signature Beverage Package and Surf Wi-Fi are included — plus the added perk of free prepaid Crew Appreciation, along with free upgrades to the Elite Beverage Package and Premium Wi-Fi.

Cruise-only fares for a 14-day South America Passage begin at $1,699 per person double occupancy. Taxes, fees and port expenses are additional.

This Cruise Line Just Announced New 3-week Trips to South America and Antarctica — for as Low as $163 a Day

Holland America's 2025–26 season has stops at Iguazu Falls, Machu Picchu, and Torres del Paine National Park.

There's been a lot of buzz about Antarctica in recent years, and if you're itching to make the trip, Holland America just opened bookings for its southern itineraries during the 2025–2026 season.

The cruise line's 1,964-passenger ship Oosterdam will sail between Santiago, Chile, and Fort Lauderdale or Buenos Aires on a variety of 14-, 17-, and 22-day itineraries between November 2025 and March 2026. Highlights include traversing the Panama Canal; overland trips to Iguazu Fall, Machu Picchu, and the Galápagos; and visits to the Falkland Islands, Torres del Paine National Park, and, of course, Antarctica.

All together, the itineraries provide access to 16 UNESCO World Heritage sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

"South America is a vibrant region that offers contrasting experiences within one cruise, sailing from the tropics to glaciers and busy cities to some of the most remote places in the world," Dan Rough, Holland America Line's vice president of revenue management, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . "Our mid-sized ships make it possible to craft itineraries that feature an exciting collection of South American ports; and our menus, enrichment, and entertainment on board ensure guests come away feeling deeply connected to the places they visited."

If you plan on booking the Antarctica itinerary, take note: you won't actually get off the ship there, as there are too many passengers onboard land excursions. (Ships must have fewer than 500 passengers to qualify for off-ship activities.)

Instead, you'll do scenic sailing along the coastline for four days, weather permitting, likely seeing many icebergs and whales along the way. The trade-off does come at a cost — or rather a lack of one. Sail-by cruises to Antarctica are much less expensive than expedition cruises with landings.

Fares for the 14-day South America Passage itinerary begin at $1,699 per person based on double occupancy. Book today at hollandamerica.com .
