Best Travel Agencies

Author picture

Working with a reputable travel agent takes the stress out of travel. Use our guide to research the best travel agency for you. Travel agencies handle transfers between multiple destinations, event planning services, group travel arrangements and more. Many agencies are starting to market themselves in new ways, often by catering to niche markets.

  • Our recommendations are based on what reviewers say.
  • 4,342,287 reviews on ConsumerAffairs are verified.
  • We require contact information to ensure our reviewers are real.
  • We use intelligent software that helps us maintain the integrity of reviews.
  • Our moderators read all reviews to verify quality and helpfulness.

How to find a travel agency

Accreditation.

Travel agencies aren't required to obtain licensing or certification, though recognized organizations accredit and certify members. Travelers can confirm a travel agency's accreditation by looking for the accrediting body's logo on a travel agency's website or brochure.

  • ASTA accreditation: ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors) accreditation assures clients that the agency operates under ASTA's code of ethics and will communicate with clients about unexpected changes to travel plans.
  • IATA accreditation: IATA (International Air Transport Association) accreditation provides agencies with a Sales Agency Agreement and a TIDS number that authorizes sales of international and domestic airline tickets.
  • Unaccredited agencies: If considering an unaccredited travel agency, take into account that their lack of accreditation could mean they are inexperienced or have had service problems that caused a loss of accreditation.

Credentials

Credentials are similar to accreditation, though on an individual level. Some travel agents obtain certification through The Travel Institute, which confirms the agent's interpersonal skills and destination knowledge. These types of certifications ensure that travelers are working with an agent that has the necessary experience to anticipate travel issues and provide solutions.

  • Certified travel associate (CTA): A CTA is a professional who has a minimum of 18 months in the travel industry and has passed courses to enhance skills and service.
  • Certified travel counselor (CTC): A CTC has the skills of a CTA, advanced industry training and five years of industry experience.
  • Certified travel industry executive (CTIE): A CTIE is a travel industry professional who has management training within the travel agency.

Travel agencies charge fees for services provided to clients to account for time spent researching and booking travel arrangements. Keep in mind that a travel agent’s inside knowledge of travel-related discounts may make booking through an agency less expensive than self-booking over the internet.

  • Airline ticket procurement fee: Travel agencies charge an airline ticket procurement fee for purchasing tickets on behalf of the traveler.
  • Travel agency service fees: Other common travel agency fees include fees for booking hotels and rental cars and for time spent researching trips.
  • Itemization of costs and fees: While there is no law requiring travel agencies to provide an itemized breakdown of costs and fees, you can request this information to ensure fees are reasonable.

International travel planning

Planning a trip to another country is typically more complex than planning a domestic trip due to extra paperwork and the need to know details about the destination country. A trusted global travel agency can help manage details and paperwork on your behalf.

  • Destination-specific research or specialization: Some agents with certification from The Travel Institute are trained in region-specific bookings while others charge for time spent researching destinations.
  • Hotel and flight packages: Using a global travel agency to book international hotel and flight packages can cut costs even after agency fees are added. To check for savings, compare online price listings to prices provided by the agency.
  • Visa and passport requirements: Having visas and passports in order is vital when traveling to other countries, so confirm which documents are needed with the agency early in the trip-planning process.

Group travel planning

Planning a trip for a group can be challenging because some facilities cannot accommodate groups. Travel agencies find suitable venues and transportation for the entire group. A global travel agency can help you with international group vacations.

  • Large-group discounts: Travel agencies have access to discounts based on established relationships with hotels and airline companies to secure a great price for group bookings.
  • Transportation: A large group is not going to fit in a standard rental car. Confirm the travel agency is able to book a van or several cars to meet the group's transportation needs.
  • Itinerary details for the group: In addition to sleeping arrangements and transportation, eating out and visiting tourist attractions can be problematic for a group. Ask the travel agency to arrange the fine points of the group's trip in addition to handling the larger details.

Land and sea planning

Planning a vacation involves more than selecting a country and booking hotel and airfare. Hiring a travel agency can help make sure travelers enjoy every stop in their itinerary.

  • Add a cruise: Talk to your travel agency about adding some sea travel to any vacation. Different onboard accommodations and ports of call allow travelers to extend the reach of their trips.
  • Seamless transfers: Making the transfer from onshore accommodations to a cruise ship can eat up almost an entire day, but a travel agent takes care of the hassle by arranging travel to the port at the right time.
  • Planning excursions: Ask the travel agent to arrange desired shore excursions at the ship's ports of call that enrich other planned itinerary stops.

Types of travel agencies

Commercial travel agencies.

Commercial travel agencies cater to business travelers. These agencies specialize in tracking down deals for business travelers to help companies manage travel costs.

Online travel agencies

Travel agencies that exist only in cyberspace provide clients with the convenience of online booking and discounts that are available only to professional travel agencies. Some agencies offer both online booking and walk-in service for clients.

Niche travel agencies

Niche travel agencies provide clients with specialized knowledge of a region. This enhances the travel experience for clients by ensuring paperwork is in order and providing specific, often first-hand, knowledge of the area tourists are visiting.

Membership associations

Memberships associations give travelers access to the organization's travel planning services for the cost of an annual membership rather than charging per transaction. This type of agency offers the most benefit to frequent travelers.

Who uses travel agencies?

International travelers.

International travelers can cut the stress of planning trips to other countries when a global travel agency manages the details. This includes making sure each traveler has the proper paperwork and booking suitable travel accommodations.

Business travelers

Business travelers can take advantage of savings associated with discounts available only to travel agents. Some travel agencies also handle the detailed expense report paperwork required by the accounting departments of most companies.

Group travelers

Group travelers can save time when looking for accommodations that have room for the entire group by using a travel agency. Group bookings through an agent can also save you money.

Travel bargain seekers

Travel bargain seekers can discuss their travel budget with a travel agent. This is a way to determine what discounts and money-saving packages a travel agency can arrange.

Travel agencies FAQ

Most travel agencies don’t charge customers, meaning the only price you pay is the cost of your trip. Agents are typically paid commissions by the hotels or airlines. Some travel agents may charge service fees from $100 to $500, but that money is usually applied toward the cost of your trip if you complete travel arrangements through the agency.

To know if a travel agency is legit:

  • Review the agency’s website for a physical address and phone number.
  • Check for industry certifications and associations with professional organizations like the American Society of Travel Advisors.
  • Read reviews to learn about client experiences. Ask for a list of references.
  • Make sure the agent accepts credit cards.
  • Compare pricing to make sure cost isn’t too high or too low.

No, it’s generally free to use a travel agent. A travel agency may charge a service fee or a booking fee, but it’s common for this fee to apply toward the cost of your trip.

The four main types of travel agencies are:

  • Commercial travel agencies , which cater mainly to business travelers
  • Online travel agencies that help people plan their trips entirely online
  • Niche travel agencies , which specialize in arranging trips to specific areas
  • Membership associations that provide travel services as a benefit to members

Using a travel agent is a more personalized experience than booking online — and sometimes cheaper. Travel agents are experts who can find the best deals on flights , cruises, hotels and activities. Agents are often available 24/7 in case of problems. And there’s usually no extra cost to use one.

Yes, a travel agent can save you money, especially if you’re traveling internationally to unfamiliar territory or if you’re organizing a trip for a big group. In addition to finding you the best deal, a travel agent saves you time planning and researching — often at no cost for services.

Travel agencies:

  • Find the best deals on flights, hotels, cruises and activities for individuals, families, businesses and groups
  • Give clients personalized attention and advice for trip planning
  • Offer trip insurance
  • Save you time and stress
  • Are available 24/7 in case of a problem and advocate on your behalf

No, you don’t need to tip a travel agent. A great way to show appreciation is to refer friends, family members and co-workers. Some people choose to write a thank-you note and/or give a small gift.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Travel + Leisure Readers' 15 Favorite Tour Operators of 2023

The right tour operators can make or break a trip. These specialists came out on top in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023 thanks to insider knowledge and personalized service.

top tours agency

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Courtesy of Butterfield & Robinson

While we travel to see the sights, what we really take home with us are the experiences. And finding the right tour operator — one that’s able to meld insider knowledge about a destination with the best ways to take it in — can make or break a trip. But when the right combination does come along, it can be pure magic, so it’s no wonder that the last year has seen group travel on the rise .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Staff/guides
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

With nine of the companies returning from last year’s list , one major trend that stands out is the focus on a region, like with this year’s No. 1 pick, ATJ, which focuses on luxury travel, ranging from bespoke private to small group itineraries, in Austrasia. Also destination experts are Inside Japan Tours (No. 10), who offer themed trips, from honeymoons to diving, around the island nation, and Vagabond Tours of Ireland (No. 12), which makes its debut on the list, standing out for its B Corporation status, as it guides travelers around the Emerald Isle in their choice of style, either relaxed and culture-focused or active and adventurous.

Also notable are the operators who go a step beyond, like two returning favorites: Artisans of Leisure (returning as No. 3) has been called “top notch”; one reader said that “no other tour operator comes close in terms of knowing the destinations [and] understanding what we want and executing our trip flawlessly.” Black Tomato (dropping from last year’s No. 4 to a still respectable No. 6) manages to both fulfill curiosity and allay FOMO on its adventures globally.

But more than anything, it’s loyalty that shows what a strong tour operator is made of, and readers often raved about return visits with a particular company. One, for instance, shared that after 25 journeys, Du Vine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 2) stands out among them all. “The best cycling trips I’ve been on,” they said. “Great staff, accommodations, and first class all the way.” And that’s the winning combo for a tour company — leaving travelers with that passion for exploring the world through their eyes. See the complete list of top 15 tour operators, according to T+L readers, below.

Courtesy of ATJ

Formerly known as Asia Transpacific Journeys, ATJ made the list in 2011, 2017, and 2018, and it now leapfrogs back in triumphantly, notching the No. 1 spot. Offering tours in countries like Australia, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the company specializes in custom itineraries and private group trips. But what travelers rave about is its band of extremely helpful customer service reps who are “responsive and personable.” They added, “I can call and speak with a live person immediately.” Customers tend to be loyal, but so are the agents: “I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.”

I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Moscow in 1 Day (Walking tour)

Welcome to visit moscow tours.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad.  We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.

Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.

Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.

Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.

Moscow is a big and busy  megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.

Saint Petersburg is our second capital,  the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens.  In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!

If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!

Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again.  Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.

Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

17 Best Group Tours | Most Popular Tour Destinations To Visit In 2024 According To Experts

Posted: November 16, 2023 | Last updated: November 17, 2023

TravelAwaits looks into tour trends now that a test to return to the U.S. is no longer required .

We reached out to some of the top tour operators in the world, G Adventures, Tauck, Intrepid Travel, EF Go Ahead Tours, Trafalgar, and Globus, to find out whether the U.S. dropping its testing requirement has had an impact on bookings, and also to identify emerging tour trends. Here’s what they had to say.

Tour Bookings On The Rise

We asked major tour operators if they have seen an increase in bookings since people entering the U.S. no longer need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

“Absolutely. While interest, and bookings, have been steadily increasing, the CDC announcement definitely gave a boost to sales for both summer and fall travel bookings internationally. It seems that many people were still hesitant to book a trip because of the x-factor around protocols to return back to the US. We’re also seeing more countries open borders, which of course helps with bookings,” said Steve Lima, G Adventures director of marketing for the U.S. and Latin America.

“We are continuing to see strong bookings for travel this year. Since April, bookings for 2023 travel have increased 89 percent over the same period in 2019 (pre-pandemic),” according to Marina Goodwin, senior manager of PR & Brand Partnerships at EF Go Ahead Tours

“Many U.S. travelers were uncomfortable flying on an overseas adventure travel journey because a breakthrough infection would mean not just getting stranded up to 2 weeks in a foreign country at their own expense, but also missing work, arranging child or pet care, and other logistical headaches back home. With that requirement now gone — and the U.S. joining Canada, Australia, and virtually all of Europe in scrapping the test mandate — we have seen a surge in international travel and bookings.”

“The return testing requirement had been one of the single biggest barriers to travel, and a source of great anxiety. Getting rid of the requirement has lifted a huge burden from our guests, and it marks another major step forward on the path back toward normalcy,” said Jeremy Palmer, CEO of Tauck.

2023 Tour Trends

Major tour operators to tell us the top two or three destinations that are being booked for this year.

Lima says, “In terms of destinations, South America and Europe are leading at the moment, which supports the ‘big trip’ trend that we’re seeing. We’re starting to see a return to the multi-country vacation, thanks to opening borders and more relaxed protocols.”

Palmer shares, “We’re definitely seeing a significant surge in bookings to Europe for the remainder of 2023, particularly for our tours in Italy and Spain .”

Berna says Intrepid Travel’s “top three destinations are Northern Africa, Morocco and Egypt ; Southern Europe, Italy ; and Western Asia, Turkey .”

2024 Tour Trends

“Bookings for 2023 are definitely on the rise,” according to Kim Greiner with G Adventures. “While book-to-travel windows are shortening, we also have seen a jump in the 6 to 10 months out timeframe too, showing a large increase in the intent to travel in 2024.”

“Yes, definitely bookings are coming in strong for 2024,” says Berna. “People are ready to prioritize spending on travel expenditures, and this is more vital than ever for communities that were financially crippled by the cessation of international travel and where inflation is even worse. There is of course a natural limit to customers’ willingness to tolerate inflation in travel. Consumers may be looking to travel where their dollar goes the furthest and it appears that most travelers still consider vacations a high-budget priority for the near future. Demand for outdoor adventure travel has increased dramatically, people wanting to get away from city crowds and closer to nature. ”

A recent American Express Travel survey revealed that almost 50% of respondents were planning their summer 2024 trips, so now is the best time for tour and activity operators in the U.S. to start preparing.

Travel agents also say that people are spending more on holidays despite the higher cost of living. According to several holiday companies and tour operators demand for bookings was high in 2023 and it is expected to surge even more in early January 2024.

For some people, booking in advance gives them something to look forward to and work for. Also, average spending per holiday has increased by about 5% from last year. However, there are concerns that there could be delays at airports because of staff shortages after thousands of staff were laid off during the pandemic. Nonetheless, the U.S. Travel Foundation predicts that travel spending will increase in 2024 compared to 2023.

Travel is back — and in a big way!

The 12-day tour of England, Scottland, and Ireland takes a sightseeing route through London before taking a train through the English countryside up to Scotland’s medieval city of Edinburgh. Arrive in the Emerald Isle by way of the Lake District and Wales, including the Welsh village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, the longest-named place in Europe. Have a pint in Dublin before heading off to see the stunning sea views of the Cliffs of Moher.

An ever-popular destination, Italy tops the list for a few tour operators. It is one of G Adventures’ most popular destinations for 2023 and Palmer says that Italy remains Tauk’s top-selling group trips destination in Europe.

Italy is also one of EF Go Ahead Tours’ most-booked destinations for next year. Its 9-day tour of Venice, Florence, and Rome is a best-seller. It kicks off in Venice, where tour groups get a true taste of Italy through the city’s gondola-filled canals and picture-perfect piazzas. Highlights include Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, and a glass-blowing demonstration. In Florence, gaze up at the hand-carved doors of the Duomo and shop along the Ponte Vecchio. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it sure has been falling apart for a while. Tour many of the ruins in this ancient city, including the Colosseum.

Is there anywhere better than Greece ? EF Go Ahead Tours’ 9-day tour of Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini takes visitors from the ancient Greek capital to the azure waters of the Aegean and white-washed buildings of the Greek Isles.

Cradle of the Incan Empire, Peru tops the list of group trips 2023 bookings for G Adventures. It’s easy to see why — Peru is home to Machu Picchu, the Amazon rainforest, and Lake Titicaca, one of the highest lakes in the world. Over 50 tours of Peru are available, offering guests a chance to hike through the jungle, trek the Andes, and surf northern beaches. One of the top sellers is the week-long Inca Trail group tour, which passes through the region’s ruins, mountainscapes, and cloud forests.

6. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is another popular 2023 destination for G Adventures. It is no wonder why — this unspoiled tropical paradise is blessed with beaches and biodiversity. Choose your own Costa Rican adventure from G Adventures’ 19 tours of the country. We wouldn’t mind going on the Wellness Costa Rica tour, which features thermal hot springs, yoga, and a therapeutic mud bath.

7. The Galapagos

Check The Galapagos off your bucket list with one of the 22 tours available from G Adventures. A guided tour is a great way to see this amazing archipelago because you don’t have to worry about transportation and accommodations on this remote island chain more than 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. A small group tour to the Galapagos will show you how it inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Meet sea lions sunning on white-sand beaches, giant iguanas, 100-year-old tortoises, and a few species of booby — and that’s just on land. Wait until you strap on your snorkel!

Another popular 2023 destination for G Adventures, Morocco is home to spice markets, ornate doors, several types of tagine, and more mosques than you can count. This exotic yet affordable North African country is just a short ferry ride from Spain. From riding camels in the desert to climbing Mount Toubkal, one of G Adventures’ 17 Moroccan tours is sure to suit you.

Egypt is another popular destination in North Africa for G Adventures. Seven tours are available. Dig into the geography, culture, and archaeology of an ancient Egyptian civilization on the Highlights of Egypt tour. Gaze at the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Nile, the Sphinx, and more.

10. Thailand

Thailand can get pretty wild, so it’s a good idea to go with a tour group like G Adventures to arrange hotels, transportation, and activities. This side of Southeast Asia boasts stunning scenery, interesting history, tropical beaches, idyllic southern islands, many mountains, delicious food, and amazing people.

Explore Thailand’s ultra-modern capital, Bangkok, and iconic temples such as Angkor Wat. Sail the Mekong, savor noodles in Hoi An, and shop in Ho Chi Minh City on G Adventures’ 29-day Indochina Encompassed tour. Or, while you’re over there, see two more Southeast Asian countries on the Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand: Riversides & Railways 22-day tour.

Jordan is also in the top 10 destinations that G Adventures is seeing the most bookings for next year. Instead of staying in luxury hotels, take the Egypt, Jordan, and Israel tour overnight in a Bedouin tent in the desert of Jordan. A stop in Petra gives visitors the chance to explore the 2,300-year-old city carved into rose-colored sandstone mountains . Relax in the Dead Sea before touring the historic cities of Jerusalem and Nazareth in Israel.

Another top-seller for G Adventures, Mexico is a treasure trove of ancient sites and vibrant indigenous culture. Some of G Adventures’ 17 tours give you the chance to see other Central American countries as well, such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, and Guatemala.

13. Iceland

Home to towering mountain peaks, massive glaciers, and gorgeous fjords, Iceland is an unforgettable experience. Best of Iceland is one of G Adventures’ eight Iceland tours , offering guests a chance to see erupting geysers, visit glacier lagoons, and explore breathtaking waterfalls and black-sand beaches. Add the Aurora Borealis in the mix with the Iceland Northern Lights and Golden Circle tour, which includes soaking in steamy geothermic hot springs, hiking through Þingvellir National Park, laying eyes on the pony-sized Icelandic horse, exploring lava caves, and chasing waterfalls.

14. Switzerland

“We’ve seen consistently strong demand for Switzerland,” says Palmer. It’s no surprise, considering the European country is home to such natural beauty as the Alps and glacial lakes. Tour Geneva , Saint Moritz, Lucerne, Stresa, Lausanne, and Bern on Tauk’s Switzerland: Europe’s Crown Jewel tour. Marvel at majestic mountains on The Ultimate Alps & Dolomites tour. Or, make your way down to Switzerland from Amsterdam on the water via The Rhine and Moselle river cruise.

15. Australia

“Our guests are absolutely thrilled that Australia and New Zealand have reopened,” Palmer tells us. So are we! See the big cities, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the Outback, and more on Tauck’s Australian tours.

Australia offers diverse landscapes and vibrant cities, making it a top destination for group tours. Sydney’s iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, along with the stunning Great Barrier Reef, attract tourists seeking natural wonders.

Melbourne’s cultural scene and the rugged beauty of the Outback also draw groups. The amazing Gold Coast is a favorite for its beaches and theme parks. With unique wildlife, ancient Aboriginal sites, and the scenic Great Ocean Road, Australia offers unforgettable group travel experiences.

16. New Zealand

New Zealand’s staggering scenery includes glaciers, fjords, vineyards, gardens, and beaches. Tauck’s New Zealand tours “offer an in-depth exploration of the North and South Islands, including a taste of the Maori culture, local wines, and the natural wonders found throughout Milford Sound.”

17. United States

“America is now Intrepid Travel’s single biggest destination,” says Berna. “We launched an additional 15 new itineraries across the U.S. focused on backcountry and hiking adventures that provide both a minimal footprint and immersive nature-based experiences few others get to see.”

The launch of these new active trips will take the company’s U.S. tour range from 65 to 80 trips, its largest offering group tour in the world within one country while providing its customers with more sustainable and remote trekking experiences.

Are Group Tours Cheaper?

Yes, as one would expect, group tours tend to be cheaper than private tours for those on a tight budget. Travelers can benefit from the savings associated with sharing resources, but this also depends on the number of people in your party. On the other hand, you should also consider that tours save you a lot of time you would spend doing research, organizing everything, and booking your trip and activities.

How To Choose the Best Tour Company?

The best tour company you can get these days is the one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community. Group tours were once synonymous with inauthentic travel experiences. The idea of big buses and cheesy attractions is an old and outdated perception. These days tour groups feature more genuine experiences and more local guides. Also, consider the group size. The ideal number should be between eight and sixteen people.

What Are the Disadvantages of Group Tours?

There are a few downsides to traveling in a group. Time-saving, tried and tested itineraries that group tour operators offer may not necessarily tick all the boxes for you. The group travel dates and timespan may also not be a good fit. Or you might want to spend more time in one location and skip one stop completely. The charm of solo traveling is that you are the master of your own destiny and in complete control of when and where you travel.

The tour guide was not available by phone (during the tour). Upon arrival in LA, I had not received any information at the reception; it was generally very chaotic. The tour guide made bad jokes at the expense of others, which I did not like at all, and at the end of the tour distributed envelopes with the names of him and the bus driver to each participant (for the tip). Further, he clearly communicated at the beginning that tipping was expected and how much, which I found unpleasant. I did not feel that this was optional. The bus driver was very nice. The nature was great. The tour guide lacked social skills now and then.
The locations and itinerary were all fine. However, we were very disappointed due to the fact that the Splendors of the West tour we did was and is still currently advertised as 21 to 59. My wife and I are mid 40, s and don't have kids, so we specifically picked this one because of the advertised age range. We much prefer to not travel with kids and were hoping for a bit of a social experience with other guest our age. However, there was kids on our tour and also many in their late 70tys and above... So just rember if picking this tour with the age range in mind, they just let anyone on,

Fantastic group leader . Very knowledgeable of the history and geological sites visited. Kept the group on schedule. .
An epic, whirlwind adventure! What an amazing trip! Our guide was Dylan and he was terrific. He was smart, informative, and funny. He customized our week based on our group - making sure we all had a say and got to experience these magical places in our own ways as much as reasonably possible. He even saved someone’s life from another van by doing the Heimlich Maneuver! We did the camping option. We had envisioned relaxing evenings by the campfire but that only happened a couple of times. Usually we were scrambling to set up camp in the dark and then get packed and ready to roll out with the sunrise so we could pack in as much adventure as possible. So many incredible moments along the journey - our van fam was wonderful, pizza at sunset on the Grand Canyon’s south rim, a night hike in Aches with shooting stars and the Milky Way, s’mores on our last night with the whole group, and Dylan’s playlists for every occasion… we came home exhausted and happy, with multiple bucket list items checked off. Highly recommend!

Tour Radar made the booking process easy. Great variety of tours available. I would use this service again.
A great tour! One day in each park was just enough to give us a sense of the grandeur of each of them. People taking the tour with us were great, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We were given options so that those who wanted to do things on their own could do so, while those that remained with the group stayed with the guide and learned about the history, geology, etc. This was the first time I took a vacation with a tour group, and I was very glad that I did because I learned more than I would have if I had explored the parks on my own.

G Adventures

G Adventures

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Amadeo

Great guides, scenery, driver and comfort level. Just enough to whet our appetite for another Tour Radar tour in the future.
A journey to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Sedona, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon promises an unforgettable experience, a chance to immerse oneself in the grandeur of nature. Unfortunately, my recent 3-day tour to these magnificent locations fell far short of expectations, marred by organizational failures and an unsettling group dynamic. The onset of the tour set a disappointing precedent, with the tour bus arriving an hour and a half late under the pretense of not offering hotel pickups, despite evidently doing so for select participants. This disorganization not only caused frustration but also truncated our itinerary on the very first day, forcing us to rush through activities that should have been savored. Compounding the rocky start, the tour was dominated by a large Italian group accompanied by their own interpreter. Rather than fostering a cohesive group experience, this arrangement led to disparate treatment and created a divisive "us versus them" atmosphere. The sense of unity and camaraderie one expects in group travel was conspicuously absent, replaced by a segregating barrier that only grew as the trip progressed. The behavior of the Italian interpreter was particularly jarring. Their willingness to reprimand and yell at other guests was not only unprofessional but completely unacceptable. When confronted with such rudeness, I stood my ground, refusing to be subjected to such treatment. No traveler should be on the receiving end of such hostility. The pressure to tip was relentless and extended beyond the tour guides to include staff at every stop we visited. While tipping for good service is a standard practice, the coercive manner in which it was solicited made the experience uncomfortable. Instead of feeling like valued guests, we were treated more like sources of income, herded from one location to the next without the personal touch that transforms a trip into a memorable journey. The marvels of Sedona, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon are undeniably breathtaking, but the beauty of these sights was overshadowed by the tour's shortcomings. Instead of leaving with cherished memories, I departed with a sense of relief that the experience was over. In summary, this 3-day tour could have been a wonderful opportunity to explore some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the United States. Regrettably, due to poor management, unequal treatment of participants, and an overall lack of respect for guests, I cannot recommend this tour. Travelers seeking to visit these destinations should look to other providers who value their clients and provide the high-quality experience that such incredible sights deserve. Never again will I book with this company, and I caution others to consider alternative options.

Judd was excellent, and very knowledgable, he was very prepared and i would recommend Intrepid to my friends and family
Our trip was great! Judd from Intrepid travel made the entire trip so easy and was so patient and quick to adapt to all of our requests. We had no issues the entire week. Accomondations were usually a LaQuinta and every day we had something cool planned to see.

Trafalgar

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Contiki

Citypass was late coming through until I chased it and hotel had an issue with the single supplement so tried to charge me again for a room trying to make me refund with Contiki. Spoiled the start of my trip so had to chase Contiki when I just had arrived. Think I could've done the entire trip cheaper to be honest. Not sure what value Contiki added.

This was a fast but nice tour and Dave was a good guide. Only in LA i thought we should have had more time but it was perfect for a Solo Travler
I enjoyed this trip . The coach is good.Hyannis first day break fast was good.coverage is good.Hyannis golf resort stay is superb.providence city halt in hotel graduates is excellent.Fall colours coverage is very good.coach guidance is okay.overall the trip is very good.

Cosmos

It was a real pleasure from start to finish! Everything was so well organized! Brenda was a great guide
Most aspects of the tour was enjoyable but feel that some improvements could be made. For instance when dropped off for dinner we were only allowed two hours which was not long enough to find a restaurant, sometimes queue for a table and get back to the bus and therefore seeing little of the town we were visiting. Another instance after a long day of travelling we stopped at a Wallmart to buy food for both evening meal and breakfast as out tour operator could not guarantee the hotel restaurant would be open for business for an evening meal, this was at the Sunday river resort. There were no microwaves in our rooms but we did have fridges, which greatly limited our choice of what to buy. We along with other guests felt like this was not ideal for two meals together and felt abandoned and isolated. Whilst on the coach it was apparent that the seats at the front had more leg room but at the rear half of the bus the leg room was very restricted, some very tight, and not very suitable for sitting for long periods. The overhead bag storage was very limited as some seats had none and others had limited space. This was not helped by some guests having large hand luggage wth them as i understood hand luggage size was restricted. i do understand some guests do have to carry medical supplies. Overall we had a lovely trip and we both enjoyed the experiemnce.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

top tours agency

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

top tours agency

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

top tours agency

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

top tours agency

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

top tours agency

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

top tours agency

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

top tours agency

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The 25 Best Creative Agency Websites to Inspire Yours

Madison Zoey Vettorino

Published: November 13, 2023

Being a content marketer, you see  a lot  of creative agency websites. And that's why I can tell you exactly what the best creative agencies must have to be successful. Better yet, I've rounded up examples of unique creative agency websites that excel in providing value for visitors. Get your notebook ready to take notes: You're about to get a major helping of inspiration from these outstanding creative agency websites.

25 Inspiration-Worthy Creative Agency Websites

My 25 favorite creative agency websites all have one thing in common: They don't forgo aesthetic appeal for functionality. Remember: No matter how much you want your creative agency site to stand out, the primary goal is to ensure it's  user-friendly . Keep that in mind as you peruse these websites.

Let's dive right in.

1.  Our Own Brand

creative agency websites: our own brand homepage

What I like:  I love the animations that bring this website to life. However, if you prefer a static site, you can exit the display and find a more traditional presentation of the company's key information.

2.  Spring/Summer

creative agency websites: spring/summer homepage example

What I like:  When you scroll down to the bottom of the website, the copy invites you to 'Say Hi' and reach out to the agency. I love that verbiage — it's so warm and inviting.  Copy matters !

3.  Noomo Agency

creative agency websites: noomo agency website homepage

What I like:  As you scroll, words such as 'immersive' and 'interactive' pop up — and the website shows you that the agency is in real-time, thanks to parallax scrolling that makes you feel like you're completely immersed in the world of Noomo Agency.

4.  Norry

creative agency websites: Norry homepage

What I like:  Norry features a navigation menu at the bottom of the site, so when you scroll down, you can easily find what you are looking for.

5.  19th & Park

creative agency websites: 19th and Park

What I like:  19th & Park is true to its branding, making it visually compelling. For example, even in the site section where the agency mentions well-known brands it works with, it uses its  signature font  instead of its logo. I love the consistency.

6.  In Progress Agency

creative agency websites: in progress agency website homepage

What I like:  This agency keeps the copy short and sweet — and because of that, it's never overwhelming.

7.  EditStudio

creative agency websites: editstudio homepage

What I like:  EditStudio's  footer  presents contact information so you can easily get in touch. Plus, the footer is simple and straightforward, which contrasts sharply with the busy, engaging website.

8.  Inspira Marketing Group

creative agency websites: inspira marketing group homepage

The agency also showcases brands it works with, and underneath, offers visitors the opportunity to check out case studies to learn more. Finally, the footer stands out, thanks to how it provides a straightforward horizontal navigation menu and quick social media links. You'll also find addresses for the agency's locations. Inspira's website provides everything visitors may need. Lastly, Inspira's website  prioritizes inclusivity , as you can see  accessibility adjustments  available in the bottom right-hand corner.

What I like:  Am I biased because I worked at Inspira Marketing Group before my role at HubSpot? Maybe. But I know strong creative agency websites when I see them, and Inspira's fits the bill. I also love how this website features the blog at the bottom of the homepage so it's visible and site visitors don't have to dig around to find it.

9.  Beyond 8

creative agency websites: beyond 8

What I like:  Despite the theatrical entrance, Beyond 8 keeps it simple and straightforward on the actual website.

10.  Offer

creative agency websites: offer homepage

What I like:  This agency site reveals that, in some cases,  whitespace  is a good thing.

11.  Method

creative agency websites: method homepage

What I like:  As you roll the mouse over the different types of work the agency does, more information about the offering pops up.

12.  Designers Agency

creative agency websites: designers agency homepage

What I like:  The footer keeps it simple by just including buttons for the agency's different social media pages.

13.  AdKey Agency

creative agency websites: adkey agency

What I like:  AdKey's website keeps it simple with an elegant neutral color palette. There are just a couple of pops of colors throughout.

14.  FVM

creative agency websites: FVM homepage

What I like:  FVM's branding is very cohesive — the agency has a boxy logo, and that boxiness is reflected throughout the website in its buttons.

15.  Spot

creative agency websites: spot

What I like:  The footer features the animation from the top of the page, which adds a sense of continuity to the site.

16.  Consciously

creative agency websites: consciously homepage

What I like:  One really clever part of Consciously's site is the portion where they mention what the company does, such as content, strategy, branding, and growth. From there, you can figure out if Consciously offers what you're looking for, which saves site visitors time.

17.  Social Driver

creative agency websites: social driver

What I like:  The 'Contact Us' button is bright pink and is included in several different places on the website, so you're never far from a tool that will help you reach out.

18.  Oak Theory

creative agency websites: oak theory

What I like:  The agency's footer stands out for many reasons. For starters, it's colorful and aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, it offers a menu so visitors can easily click to wherever on the site they need to go. Lastly, it offers social media buttons so you can connect with Oak Theory on social.

19.  Ragsdale Design Group

creative agency websites: ragsdale design group

What I like:  When you click the  hamburger  button in the top right corner, the menu becomes full-screen, and you can peruse the different pages. The agency also includes its accolades at the bottom of the menu.

20.  Tinted

creative agency websites: tinted homepage

What I like:  When you scroll to the bottom of the website, you are invited to input your email so Tinted can stay in touch.

21.  Citizen Group

creative agency websites: citizen group

What I like:  Talk about a pop of color! Citizen Group wows with a bright orange background.

22.  Brandifi

creative agency websites: brandifi

What I like:  This agency's website isn't too busy, which is its strength. Instead, it gives you the necessary information and allows you to opt-in to receive email communications to learn more.

23.  Sensis

creative agency websites: sensis

What I like:  There are purposeful pops of color throughout this website that are true to Sensis' branding and add a sense of playfulness.

24.  Hero Collective

creative agency websites: hero collective

What I like:  This website keeps it simple with just a few colors. Sometimes less is more.

25.  Six Cinquième

creative agency websites: Six Cinquième

What I like:  This agency clearly displays its social media icons at the bottom of the website, so you can find its social presence easily when you scroll down.

Make Creative Agency Websites that Shine

Now that you've seen plenty of creative agency websites, you likely have a better idea of what you'd want to emulate on your site or what wouldn't work for you. Remember: Don't be afraid to take risks on your site — you are making it for a creative agency, after all. However, don't substitute creativity for functionality. Both are equally essential.

Richard Osman, author of The Thursday Murder Club series, visits Australia to promote his new book

A middle-aged white man with a beard holds his fingers to his thick-rimmed glasses.

On paper, a crime fiction series set in a retirement village doesn't scream global bestseller.

However, since Richard Osman published the first instalment of the Thursday Murder Club in 2020, the series has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, including 500,000 copies in Australia.

Osman, a popular quiz show host in the UK, is in Australia for the first time to promote the series' fourth instalment, The Last Devil to Die (2023).

It's hard to overstate the success of the Thursday Murder Club, which also includes The Man Who Died Twice (2021) and The Bullet that Missed (2022).

Steven Spielberg snapped up the movie rights early on and will start filming the screen adaptation in March 2024. Osman also recently signed a four-book deal with Penguin for $19 million, which includes two Thursday Murder Club titles and two instalments of a new crime series.

While many have argued that Osman's books are part of a renaissance of 'cosy crime', it's not a tag Osman welcomes.

"Cosy crime doesn't seem to quite cover it."

Bad things happen in his novels, he says.

"[My books] make people laugh, and I think critics find that quite difficult."

Write what you read

Osman, a long-time fan of crime fiction who cites Patricia Highsmith as his favourite author, always wanted to be a writer.

"I've always read crime fiction, which is why I write it. I think you have to write what you read," he says.

"I wrote Thursday Murder Club because I was looking for a particular type of book, and I couldn't quite find it."

A close-up of a middle-aged white man with brown hair, a beard and dark-rimmed glasses holding his hands in front of his face

The inspiration for Coopers Chase — the home of the Thursday Murder Club — came from a real-life retirement village Osman once visited in the English countryside.

However, he says the four central characters of The Thursday Murder Club represent "the four quarters" of his brain.

There's Elizabeth, an ex-spy; Joyce, a former nurse; Ibrahim, a psychiatrist; and Ron, who worked as a trade unionist.

The unlikely friends form a formidable crime-fighting gang — and one that is helping to change the conversation around ageing.

"The one thing they've all got in common is they've got older and become invisible, but they have incredible skill sets, and they never take no for an answer," Osman says.

Anything but harmless

The Thursday Murder Club pushes back against the idea that people over 70 have nothing of value to contribute.

"We worship at the altar of youth," Osman says.

Pop culture often depicts senior citizens as harmless and peripheral to the action — but in the Thursday Murder Club, they are anything but.

The quartet's worldliness turns out to be a great asset and rich fodder for a crime fiction novel.

"When you're 75, there are lots of downsides," Osman acknowledged in a 2020 interview with ABC RN's The Book Show .

"You're around grief a lot, and loss and physical incapability, but you have such life experience, and you've dealt with every type of person. You've seen it all before."

As the Thursday Murder Club's success attests, Osman's audience relishes reading about a world where the antics of retirees are centre stage — evidence, he says, that readers were ready for a different depiction of old age.

"I think that I was really pushing an open door. As soon as these characters came along, who were older and felt like heroes … everyone went, 'Oh, finally, and about time'," he says.

"I think everyone was completely ready for it."

Tackling a taboo topic

A book cover with a cream background and a purple border, with text showing author and title, and a drawing of a fox

In The Last Devil to Die, Osman takes on the troubling issue of dementia as the forgetfulness of Elizabeth's erudite husband Stephen descends into something more serious, severing his connection with the present.

Even though Osman says most families have experienced dementia, including his own, the debilitating condition is often considered a taboo topic — something the author wanted to address.

"We don't talk about it too much — it's so frightening," he says. "I wanted to give a character real dignity and respect and try to talk about it openly and honestly."

Stephen's experience of dementia was inspired by Osman's conversations with his grandfather before his death from a dementia-related illness.

"I wanted to try and get inside a character's head in tribute to my grandfather," he says.

Although his grandfather's decline was accompanied by great sadness, Osman says there was a lot of love and laughter, too.

"Love was the thing that endured … He felt loved, and he knew he loved you, and I wanted to get that across."

The Thursday Murder Club meets the Da Vinci Code

Osman will spend 2025 working on the first book of a new series centred on a detective agency run by a woman and her father-in-law.

"The daughter-in-law has a real jet set life — she's a close protection officer to billionaires, so she spends her life in Dubai and Macau and all over the world. And the father-in-law lives in a sleepy village and has no interest in ever going abroad," Osman says.

Like the father-in-law, Osman is happiest at home — "I'm not really a globetrotter," he says — and saw the dramatic potential in sending a homebody on "a Da Vinci Code-esque worldwide murder hunt".

He's also excited by the narrative possibilities presented by setting a novel in a detective agency.

"With a detective agency, someone can literally knock on the door of your office and give you your plot. They can say, 'Can you please solve this please?' In the first Thursday Murder Club, I'm not able to do that," Osman says.

But despite his plans to pen a new series, Osman has no intention to retire his much-loved crime-fighting quartet.

"I love those characters," he says.

"They've given me an awful lot, and I'm so deeply fond of them, and I love spending time with them, so I'll keep going for a very, very long time, I promise everybody that."

The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman is published by Penguin Random House.

Richard Osman is appearing in conversation with Sydney Writers' Festival Artistic Director Ann Mossop at Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
