Cuándo y cómo ver EN VIVO y ONLINE el World Padel Tour en Chile por Canal 13 y Deportes 13

El World Padel Tour llega al país con el Chile Padel Open cuya definición será transmisión exclusiva de Deportes 13.

El Club Deportivo Universidad Católica será la sede donde se desarrollará el Chile Padel Open , que llevará al país a debutar en el World Padel Tour , circuito donde compiten los más grandes exponentes del profesionalismo de este deporte a nivel mundial. El torneo se desarrollará del 13 al 19 de marzo y contará con participantes masculinos y femeninos. 

El cuadro del torneo ya fue publicado por parte de la organización, y ya se confirmó la presencia de la dupla número uno del mundo compuesta por Alejandro Galán y Juan Lebrón, los argentinos Agustín Tapia y Arturo Coello, y el chileno Javier Valdés , quien jugará con el italiano Facundo Domínguez. La competencia de mujeres promete ser igual de emocionante, pues en San Carlos de Apoquindo también estarán Alejandra Salazar y Gemma Triay, actuales número del mundo.

“Los chilenos van a vivir el torneo más importante en la historia del país y con muchos puntos sobresalientes: la igualdad de género (será la primera gira con hombres y mujeres), con tribunas para más de 5.000 personas, lo que hace que sea el torneo con mayor asistencia del World Padel Tour. Chile será sede de uno de los campeonatos outdoor más bonitos del circuito”, comentó Lisandro Borges, director de World Padel Tour en Latinoamérica.

El 2023 para el World Padel Tour será el año de su expansión ya que, además de Santiago, se incorporarán La Rioja (Argentina) y Asunción (Paraguay) a los 24 torneos que tiene el circuito. Una prueba fehaciente de que el Padel se está consolidando como una de las disciplinas deportivas con mayor explosión en el mundo.

The rise of padel and why it's so popular

With over 30 million padel players worldwide, the sport is booming and has never been more popular.

David Beckham, Serena Williams and even French President Emmanuel Macron count themselves as fans of the racquet sport.

The growth is even more remarkable considering it was only invented in 1969 by a husband and wife duo on holiday as a way to avoid boredom.

Hunter Charlton, from the Sporting Witness podcast, spoke to one of the pair, Viviana Corcuera , about the birth, growth and evolution of padel.

Where did padel start?

In 1969, while enjoying their new holiday home in the fashionable Las Brisas suburb of Mexican seaport city Acapulco, model Viviana and husband Enrique created a game that was to become a global sensation.

To pass the time, the wealthy couple began throwing a ball at a wall and Viviana quickly fell in love with the rudimentary version of the game.

She issued an ultimatum to her husband: "If you don't make a court in Acapulco, I'm going back home to Argentina. No padel court, no Viviana."

Enrique agreed and in the backdrop of the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean, a group of builders began the construction.

A court measuring 20 metres long by 10 metres wide was built out of cement, making it easy to maintain.

Enrique insisted on a crucial design element linked to an unpleasant memory he had of attending boarding school in England. Enrique said: "The school had a ball court, the balls fell outside of the court.

"I suffered so much from the cold and from going to look for balls all the time that I want a closed court."

He asked the bricklayer and the engineer to close the sides completely with wire fences.

What are the rules of padel?

Padel is a racquet sport that uses the same scoring conventions as lawn tennis but is played on courts around a third smaller.

The game is mainly played in the doubles format, with players using solid racquets with no strings. The courts are enclosed and, like in squash, players can bounce the ball off the walls.

Padel balls are smaller than those used in tennis and players serve underarm.

"It's a game of knowing how to place the ball gently. The beauty of the game was that players needed little time to start rallying, but mastering it required the right combination of technique, strategy, athleticism and dedication," Viviana explains.

Why is padel so popular and which celebrities play?

In the 1960s and '70s, Acapulco was a major holiday destination for Hollywood's glitterati and that is where padel's popularity with celebrities began.

American diplomat Henry Kissinger frequently picked up a racquet, as did many of the other high-profile visitors.

The game crossed the Atlantic in 1974 when Prince Alfonso of Spain built two padel courts in Marbella. He had developed a passion for the game after holidaying with the Corcueras.

The following year, padel arrived in Argentina, where it exploded in popularity. But there was one problem: there was no rule book.

Enrique used this to his advantage.

"Enrique wasn't getting any younger, so he changed the rules to win matches. He was the inventor, so we couldn't complain," Viviana says.

Throughout the 1980s and '90s, the sport continued to grow at pace. The introduction of transparent walls meant that spectators, commentators and cameras could view the whole courts.

The world's first international tournament - the Corcuera Cup - took place in Mexico in 1991, followed by the first World Championship in Spain the next year.

Players now include a number of Premier League footballers, with new courts in Manchester visited by Manchester United stars who have been known to record their visits on social media.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) describes padel as "the fastest-growing sport in the world", and as "an innovative form of tennis".

At the end of 2023, the LTA said there were 350 courts available in Great Britain, with the number rapidly rising, while Sport England said over 50,000 people played padel at least once in England in the year to November 2023.

Former Paris St-Germain and Newcastle forward Hatem Ben Arfa has taken his padel passion one step further than the Manchester United enthusiasts.

He reportedly ranked 997th in France earlier this year and is said to have competed in 70 tournaments during 2023.

Viviana believes padel took off so quickly because it can be enjoyed by the entire family - from grandparents to young children.

"It brings the family together. We can all play. The grandfather can play with the grandson, the father with the son," she said.

"I'm very proud to have been part of the invention of this game with my husband making the first set of rules going from a wire fence to glass. My husband died many years ago in 1999; what I would have given for him to be able to see how far the sport has come."

Michael Kennedy, sommelier and president/founder of Vin Fraîche Wine Group , shares, " Fondugues Pradugues , just south of Saint-Tropez, is absolutely awe-inspiring and a little off the beaten path. Sandwiched between foothills and the sea, it's a stunning, quiet, and perfectly Provençal vineyard."

Beyond its gorgeousness, Kennedy loves that the site is farmed biodynamically and produces some of the best rosés from the area, which is renowned for the pink drink.

"There's a reason the entire region is a UNESCO World Heritage site; aside from its history as the first demarcated wine region in the world, the patchwork topography is ornate and radical," explains Jillian Dara , a Boston-based wine and travel journalist.

She adds, "Vineyards are puzzle-like as traditionally horizontal rows curve into vertical lines adjacent to zig-zagged trellises. Plus, olive trees punctuate the land for a three-dimensional effect to the naked eye; cameras can't capture the true beauty here. This is especially noticeable at Quinta de Roêda , which is planted with the grapes used for Croft Port."

Bodega Ysios's vineyard is known for its incredible rioja wine and regenerative viticulture, but its lush landscape and avant-garde architecture is certainly worth mentioning too. With a wave-like building that looks almost pixelated at first glance, you might just do a double-take the first time you see it. The modern structure is especially breathtaking surrounded by the century-old vineyard and towering mountains.

Brush Creek Ranch Wine Director Sydney Werry looks closer to home for her pick. “I think there are so many incredible and beautiful winemaking areas in the world, but one really stands out to me: Napa Valley . As a California native, it is hard not to select a place in my home state!”

Her pick for the most beautiful vineyard is Dalla Valle Vineyards , a stunning Golden State spot with views for miles and miles. “I love the rolling green hills, the perfectly measured rows of vines, and the blue sky and sun,” the award-winning sommelier expands.

This South African gem is an excellent example of the beauty of the Capetown Winelands, a world-renowned wine region growing in popularity. According to Maija DeRijk-Uys, managing director of specialty travel agency Go2Africa , “With Cape Dutch charm mixed with some modern twists and South African flair, this working farm that uses regenerative farming practices and boasts magical views, dishes up the most spectacular soil to fork fare and some of the oldest and iconic wines.”

She adds, “ Boschendal is a must-visit (and stay if you can!) for any guests, young and old, who enjoy a multitude of activities, beautiful landscapes, art, and culinary delights, all served with a splash—or bottle—of wine.”

Werry also finds the Mosel, Germany, wine region especially compelling. She says, "It has a beautiful, quaint town with a river winding through and tasty treats all over it. But the thing that sticks out the most is the incredible vineyards. They are some of the steepest in the entire world at 65 degrees incline and are so striking they take your breath away!"

Werry enjoys seeing the creativity of the producers in this area, too. She shares, "A personal favorite is J.J. Pruem ."

Kennedy can’t get enough of this South American winery. He explains, “Known as one of the most important architectural wineries of the world, Viña Vik also boasts incredible vineyards that surround the stunning site. Once again, beyond the obvious beauty of the place and the winery, the wines themselves are absolutely stunning.”

Winemaker Cristian Vallejo crafts some of the best wines in South America. Bonus: This winery also has an incredible hotel on site, so you can make the most of your time there.

Dara recently returned from her first trip to Alsace, a spot in northeastern France that borders Germany and Switzerland. She was genuinely astonished at how gorgeous the entire region was.

“If I had to pick just one from this region, it would be Grand Cru Rangen with its 80- to 90-degree vertical slopes overlooking the medieval fairytale town of Thann. The soils are unique for the Alsace region (volcanic), making the roots dig deep for survival; thus, the wines showcase distinct terroir like complex pinot gris and bone dry riesling,” she adds.

Pro tip: Anyone can hike up the Rangen for a better appreciation of the extreme terrain and for postcard-worthy views of the old town's Gothic church and clustered commune of 16th-century homes.

Abbie Synan , travel writer and advanced-level Fora Travel Advisor , loves the Azores as an unexpected Portuguese destination. She shares, “While wine drinkers may flock to the Duoro Valley for a glass of vino or port, don't be fooled into thinking this is the only area in Portugal for good wines. Pico, an Azorean island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a contender in the Portuguese vine scene.”

Synan loves the verdelho white wines that are a specialty of this area. “What is even more exceptional is how the grapes are grown. Not your traditional straight rows upon rows of vines, these vineyards have small squares of land patchworked together by rows of black lava rock walls, stones that would have previously been strewn around the farmlands.”

She explains that the lava soil is nutrient-rich but proves difficult for agriculture, so many farming practices are done by hand, just like they would have been hundreds of years ago. Synan thinks the Azores Wine Company is one of the most beautiful vineyards on the planet for its unique setting, gorgeous views of the Pico Volcano, and sleek, modern accommodations on the boutique property.

Château La Coste in France is the pick of luxury travel journalist Lindsay Cohn . She adds, “If you love wine and modern art, be sure to make a reservation at Château La Coste, a jaw-dropping estate about 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence. Contemporary sculptures are set across 200 hectares of rolling vineyards and fragrant trees.”

She adds, “Besides learning about organic farming and production methods, touring the Jean Nouvel-designed cellar, and sipping vino in a stunning setting, visitors can do guided art and architecture walks on-site.”

Kennedy has one final pick, with the added caveat that he may be biased towards their site in Tuscany , calling it “the most stunning place.” He adds, “It's part of an estate that borders the Castello di Casole, which dates back to the 900s—and has sweeping quintessential Tuscan views of the whole region.”

He also notes that the old vine parcel produces the loveliest Tuscan wines. “Have you caught the theme? Beautiful vineyards tend to produce stunning wine," the sommelier laughs.
